cooperating for us. showers are in the forecast, at least in some areas. we have team coverage on this fourth of july, no matter the weather "action news" reporter trish hartman is in ocean city, ali gorman is along the ben franklin parkway but we will begin with meteorologist cecily tynan with more on that threader of rain. >> alicia and rick we have rain in our forecast this evening. mother nature putting a bit of a damper on our fourth of july night. double scan live showing this band of showers working up from maryland and northern virginia. it is weakening as it does but a much wider view on double scan showing that there's low pressure up across the midwest and this whole system will be sliding over us overnight tonight and that's actually sparking severe weather across west virginia. so, breaking it down, this evening for the fireworks, lots of clouds and there will be some showers around, temperatures in the 70's, at 8 o'clock 75, by 10 o'clock 71, that steady heavy rain will be arriving in the wee hours of the morning.

many hours after the fireworks but we're looking at the potential for some very heavy rain. so a flash flood watch has been posted for entire viewing area until midnight,, from midnight i should say until 10 o'clock in the morning for the threat of some localized flooding on roads and creeks. i'll talk more about that. once the rain moves out i'm tracking a heat wave on the way with the hottest weather so far this year. all the details on that in the full accuweather forecast. rick. >> all right cecily. we'll check back in later. let's he had to the jersey shore and "action news" reporter trish hartman who is live in ocean city tonight where overcast skies didn't keep folks from having fun on this holiday today. trish. >> reporter: that's right, rick. the beach and the boardwalk have been packed today. we saw some sun earlier. now it's been drizzling on and off for the past half hour but these folks don't mind. this group of cousins from sicklerville enjoying ice cream and water ice. wave lie to the folk at home. say happy fourth of july. everyone we talked to was

thrilled to be celebrating down the shore. >> when you first get in it's really cold and then when you get -- you get used to it it actually gets warmer. >> reporter: as far as the eye could see people were enjoying those refreshing waves in ocean city. even with clouds in the forecast, the beach was packed with happy vacationers. >> every single day we dig a hole and we get as deep as we can and then we put our feet in it and bury ourselves. >> reporter: this group from maryland staked out their area with red, white and plow, one of many ways beachgoers honored those who have made sacrifices for our freedom. >> i just love our heroes and i love everything they've done for us. >> it's a nice day. i mean, this is a day god made for today. we have to enjoy it. it's the fourth of july. the freedom we have and that's all that counts. >> we're just celebrating u.s.a. we're very patriotic here to celebrate us. >> reporter: up on the boardwalk the gibbs family from havertown was gobbling up ice cream happy to be in their favorite beach town. >> a family friendly area.

it's said to be a failed beam in the suspension system. now, because so many trains are off the rails, septa is urging rail riders to look for work week alternatives. >> because of the crowded conditions losing 13,000 seats is quite substantial. we want to get the message out there to be flexible with your glime please take note if you are watching this and you take septa. septa says it plans to have a modified saturday special with service every half hour during rush hour. >> from our delaware news room tonight police in newark are investigating two terrifying cases of attempted abduction. the first happened yesterday at colonial gardens. a 28-year-old woman unloading her car was grabbed from behind by a man. he put a rag soaked with a chemical on her mouth according to police. she was able to fight him off and get away. in the second attack a 61-year-old woman was getting out of her vehicle at main towers when she, too, was accosted from behind. the suspect tried to push her

back into the vehicle but she fought him off as well. we'll have much more on these attacks live from newark coming up in our next half hour. a tractor-trailer struck and killed a ped who was walking along i-295 early this morning. it happened around 4:00 a.m. near route 38 in mount laurel. no word yet on the identity of the victim or whether any charges will be filed against the driver of that truck. >> it is time now to take a look at how the roadways are shaping up tonight. maybe people running away from the beach. >> we'll see. matt pelman isn't running anywhere, he's standing right there for us and he's live in the "action news" traffic center. happy fourth to you. >> same to you guys. i'll be running in just about 45 minutes or so. traffic running away from the beach running pretty smoothly. i don't think a lot of people are anxious to leave the beach. in dennisville this is 47 northbound side of petersburg head up to the split. as you can come away from wildwood traffic has been moving pretty well. we're just starting to see a slow down on the northbound side of the garden state

parkway approaching the a.c. expressway there in the ongoing construction zones, speeds in the teens now. volume is starting to build but up until this point it really hasn't been too bad. getting sick of the grotto's pizza, i can't imagine that but if you need to come back from the delaware beaches it's great. northbound side of highway one speeds in the 60's. with people staying down the shore longer we'll see heavier traffic later tonight and tomorrow morning which is problematic because we already had plenty of fish to friday with tomorrow morning's commute and the septa regional rail car shortage that's going to give us delays and a lot of overcrowding. this afternoon on septa patco and njt were on holiday schedules. in most cases that means a sunday schedule. coming back from the poconos earlier crash on the southbound northeast extension is gone, so you're moving fine now with speeds in the mid 60's. but we'll check it again, rick and alicia, in the next half hour. >> the travel rush is on and

security is high. after last week's terror attacks at airport in istanbul airports enhanced security measures all across the united states and with 11 million seats booked, they just can't be too careful. here's abc's stephanie ramos with the latest from the roads and the skies on this fourth of july. >> fourth of july celebrations in our nation's capitol will be some of the biggest but d.c. is not the only city seeing many travelers and ramped up security. on this fourth of july, of the 43 million americans traveling over this holiday weekend, 36 million of them will drive. >> prices are low and i figured i'd give it a shot and a travel. >> so low the average of $2.27 per gallant been this cheap since 2005. now if you plan on being on the roads later today get ready for traffic. according to the folks at traffic navigation app waze the roads will be busiest at 10 o'clock tonight as people head home from those fireworks

not bad. its fourth of july fun was in full swing in narberth as well. families kicked off the holiday this morning at the narberth playground. there were lots of things for kids everything from cotton candy to a bounce house. there was a pie eating contest today as well. sign me up. >> and the roar of motorcycles kicked off collingdale's independence day parade. several clubs took part in that parade including bikers against child abuse and the pennsylvania coalition of motorcycles. the bikers were followed by a local scout troop as well as spring bands. after the parade the community was invited to celebrate the holiday at collingdale park. fireworks will take place there tonight at 9 o'clock. >> ♪ >> in south jersey marching bands and more entertained the crowds in berlin. the parade route kicked off at the berlin township firehouse and made its way through town. people in the crowd were, of course, sporting their red,

john carpenter worked tirelessly to make this memorial come true for the past few years. a body found in the river. ah italian media said he had a large wound on his head and his shirt was also covered in blood. solomon had just completed his first year at the university of wisconsin in madison. police in rome have now opened up a murder investigation. >> investigators are new york city say it will take several days to find out what can chemicals were used in a homemade fire work that detonated in central park yesterday. a teenager stepped on the explosion leaving him severely injured and forcing doctors to have to amputate his foot. investigators say it was not a case of terrorism. they believe it was a makeshift attempt to replicate a snapper fire work which makes noise when thrown to the ground. whoever made it apparently thought it didn't work and tossed it in a remote part of the park. that's where the teenager was when he accidentally set it off.

>> countdown is on for the juneau spacecraft to reach its destination, jupiter. solar powered spacecraft traveling for five years and is scheduled to start engine burn before midnight and hopefully taking pictures shortly thereafter. with the exception of the sun jupiter is bigger than everything in the solar system put together. juneau will orbit 37 times over the next 27 months. its mission will end in 20's 18 when the spacecraft will deliberately crash into the planet. >> in health check a new study shows a dangerous drinking behavior is more common than thought on college campuses. it's called drunk orexia students skip meals or exercise intensely before meals. the idea being to cut down on calories consumed to increase the buzz. study shows eight in 10 students have engaged in this

a steadier band of light showers moving in moving through maryland heading into lancaster county, oxford chester county and new castle county and this whole band is moving northeast at about 20 miles per hour. so, this is going to be putting a damper on our fourth of july evening and then there's heavy rain that will be moving in through the overnight hours. right now temperatures doesn't feel like the fourth of july. 76 degrees in philadelphia. allentown 78. wilmington 75. cape may only 71. normal high for this time of the year is 87 degrees. so, with the clouds, it's quite a bit cooler and it is slightly humid. 61 is the dewpoint right now. but it's a lot more humid down over dover. the dewpoint is 70's degrees and it's the warm front that's moving through so as it lifts to the north the dewpoints will really be soaring tomorrow really through the rest of the weekend with a heat wave on the way. satellite6 along with action radar showing here's the band of the showers that will be moving through this evening and then there's low pressure

this, i would take an umbrella because there will be some showers around this evening, lots of clouds as well. also wear a sweatshirt, a little bit on the cool side at 8 o'clock, 75. by 10 o'clock 71. then after midnight is when the real heavy rain moves in so the national weather service has posted a flash flood watch for our entire viewing area beginning at midnight until 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. i'll talk more about the specifics on how much rain to expect, when and where and after that, we've got the hottest weather of the year heading in. all the details on that in the full accuweather forecast. >> okay, thanks cecily. >> and now the details to the stories we're following for you tonight. the victims tell newark authorities a suspect came out of nowhere, it's a story we've been following for you, two cases within the same area and two women fighting for their lives. these attacks happened within hours of each other, all along the same stretch of east main street. again in newark last night into this morning. luckily both women got away. but police are hot on the

trail in this case. "action news" reporter jeanette reyes live in newark where the attacks happened with more details. jeanette. >> reporter: alicia, newark police say this man seemed to have carefully land out both of these attempted abductions but they are holding out hope this afternoon that another set of eyes was watching all of this happen and that that will lead to a much needed break in this case. the news of not one but two attempted abductions spread quickly along east main street. kyle stubs lives just feet away from where the first incident happened. >> i feel very frightening just for anybody to go through an experience like that. >> reporter: newark police say around 11:30 last night a 26-year-old woman was walking to and from her car bringing things into her apartment at colonial gardens. on the last of those trips, someone grabbed her from behind and quickly tried to cover her mouth. that's when the overwhelming smell of the chemical soaked rag hit her. >> i'm pretty shocked that

something like that would happen. that actually makes me scared. that could really happen to anybody. >> reporter: the university of delaware student fought back. the suspect gave up and ran off. but it wouldn't be long before he returned just four hours later around 3:30 this morning, a 61-year-old woman says she was also attacked from behind. she says a man tried to should have her into a car and like the last victim, the woman successfully fought him off but another chilling similarity. that strong odor. >> we know it's a chemical base on the smell. not certain exactly what type of chemical but both victims described a smell. >> reporter: virginia miles says she and others have felt uneasy about coming out late at night. she always felt she wasn't alone. >> there's been a couple times used to come out and walk the dog she said there was somebody out there walking around here. i don't know where they're coming from. >> reporter: miles insists though not as strong as she used to be, a little awareness goes a long way. >> since i got my eyes looking for somebody, you know, if

there is somebody roaming around here at night, i know that. i don't know who it is. >> reporter: and we saw police come by earlier today canvassing the area and collecting any possible evidence 33 may have missed the first time around but they do have a very vague description of the suspect. if you have any information that could help in this ongoing investigation, however minor you think it might be newark police want to hear from you. reporting live in newark, jeanette reyes, channel6 "action news. >> thanks jeanette. from our new jersey news room tonight a man was rescued from the roof of a burning home in camden this afternoon. this was the scene along the 1100 block of mount ephraim avenue. still not clear how the man wound up on the roof of the vacant property but firefighters were able to quickly knock out the flames. the man was taken to cooper university hospital for treatment. the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. >> ♪ >> a situation is continuing to develop in camden. an arson task force is being assembled to investigate 13

suspicious fires set over the weekend. most of the fires were set in vacant homes located within a one-mile radius. some broke out while crews were on the scene of another fire. all of them happened during the daytime, so investigators are hoping that someone saw something suspicious. business owner earnest hall says he thought this new security system caught the suspect. >> you know, we get here, we would be able to run the tape, look and see everything and they would be able to see everything that's going on here. that's why i had it put on the outside and inside but nothing was turned on. >> seven firefighters suffered minor injuries while fighting those fires. no one else was hurt. if you have information, you can call the tip line. it's post the right now on 6abc.com. >> septa regional rail riders are being warped to find alternate routes to and from work until further notice. one third of the trains in the fleet are being pulled from service. starting tomorrow septa regional will operate on a modified saturday schedule. trains will be added to the

police everywhere are out in full force. with fireworks lighting up the skies and millions celebrating on the ground -- >> be vigilant out there, be safe out there. look out for each other. >> reporter: it is all hands-on deck for police across the country with the nation on alert and new york on edge. the nypd still investigating the source of the blast in central park, the 18-year-old victim visiting from virginia still in the hospital with his foot now amputated. >> we're all sad, i mean, this wonderful, wonderfully active young man, somebody did it. i don't know who. >> reporter: evidence recovered from the scene have authorities leaning towards this being the work of an amateur who tried but failed to detonate what appears to be homemade explosives. >> there is some forensic evidence that indicates that it was not meant to go off by somebody stepping on it.

hi, how are you. >> how is that for a surprise guest at the fourth of july parade in hockessin delaware. vice president joe biden walked a portion of the route shaking hands and taking pictures. organizers say this is their final year putting this parade together and warn that unless someone comes forward to take over the reigns, the parade might not happen next year. maybe biden's unannounced visit will encourage someone new to get involved in that longstanding tradition. >> folks happy to see him there. meanwhile matt pelman is back in the "action news" traffic center with an update on the commute which is actually in full swing despite the holiday, matt. >> that's absolutely right. i'm encouraging people not to get involved in this, it's the schuylkill expressway westbound just west of passyunk avenue and 26th street where they all come together. it's a motorcycle accident rick and alicia, that's taking out the left side of the roadway. fire trucks and ambulance as well are on the scene. they just got the bike actually pushed off to the side here but traffic is kind of slowly snaking through.
