half hour to delays caused by the fact that septa has taken 120 train cars off line. lets get the latest on that part of the story. john rawlins is live. today better or worse than yesterday? >> reporter: well, i think it's hard to say at this point. it's hard to say it certainly hasn't been a good day. i don't know how much impact this fire has overall on the train system but if you look behind me at the status board, we see 6 to 60 minute delays. the thorndale a 70 minute delay last i checked. and there were problems this morning and problems this afternoon. cornwell heights on the trenton line, septa had to ask amtrak to come to help them. an amtrak train stopped there and picked up 260 riders and got

them into center city. like i said, it's a tough commute. another p.m. rush with low expectations. >> yesterday going home the train was about 30 minutes late and people were rushing to get on there. it was a stampede. >> yesterday was pretty hectic. it was an ugly day. >> some opting for an earlier train to avoid delays and standing room only conditions. >> absolutely yes. >> why are you leaving early? >> i don't want to get jammed up on the train. >> one-third of septa's rail fleet pulled from service because of safety defects xg some people spilled out on to the area where the cars connect called the vestibule and that is a safety issue. >> we saw tweets with people riding in the vestibules, we will not move a train if there

are passengers in the vestibule. >> this video shows the septa worker moving people before the train can leave. >> all of this shall pass? >> yes, we'll all get home by the end of the day i guarantee it. >> lets hope no truer words were ever spoken, it's a difficult compute tonight. are you looking at the status boards at suburban station and for the h trains out of track one and two, seven of them will rate. anywhere from 6 minutes to 60 minutes and that seems to be the situation. condition tell you at this point how much impact that fire is having on the system overall but creating delays for the trains on the thorndale-paoli line. it's been a rough commute here today.

the day so far this year in the city. allentown 93 degrees. trenton 93, and wilmington 91 and sea isle city, you had a hot high of 91. the highest heat index across the region 97 in philadelphia and sea isle city 100, 96 in reading and 94 in surf city. so the excessive heat warning stays up along the i-95 metro area until 6:00 p.m. on friday, it remains hazy, hot and humid for a good portion of our region. expected heat indexes over the next couple of days, you see the core of hot hair from trenton to wilmington into millville and portions of a.c. and off to the north and west as well. the rest of our region will find heat index numbers from 95 to 100 degrees, heat tips are on the way. you will want to seek out the air conditioning if you spend a lot of time outdoors and breaks in the shade as well.

ask the city council what happened to atlantic city. archbishop chaput says that same sex couples or divorced couples that did not have marriages annulled should abstain from sex if they want to accept communion. chaput goes on to say that remarried cohabitating and same sex couples may not serve on parish councils or disability pension communion. the guidelines come in response to pope francis's doctrine the joy of love. it opens the door for people to receive commune but left to the discretion of local bishops and priests. police are searching for the gunman that opened fire on a large crowd in hunting park in philadelphia. the bullet struck 13-year-old

griffin. he is in stable condition. police say that prior to the shooting some in the group exchanged words with a woman in the car that almost hit him. and she came back a short time later with a gunman. >> military veterans in south jersey have a new place to go for medical care. new jersey lieutenant governor was there to cut the ribbon and the va clinic, located at 3 thousand lincoln drive in marlton. it replaces the clinic that was housed at joint base dix mcguire lakehurst. coming up thieves swipe an american flag from a south yearsy home on the 4th of july. and these were no ordinary stars and stripes, the personal connection that has the family desperate to get the flag back.

draped over patrick's casket and on 4th of july everything changed. someone stole the flag. >> it's the last article that we have. >> police say it happened in the early morning hours, someone took off with the flag. and schafer is a military veteran and they fly the flag in their yard because they don't have a pole big enough to support it. he was crushed when he found out that the 10 foot flag was taken. >> i said jesus christmas. the rope was hanging and i walked to the end and i thought this can't be true, police don't have leads but are searching surveillance cameras and report two other smaller flags in the neighborhood were stolen the same day. this loss hurts but will never erase the memory of their hero, patrick corcoran that died
