the sound of a police officer's gun firing into the chest of a black man in baton rouge, louisiana. while the exact circumstances of the incident have yet to be established, it has sparked passions across the country, including philadelphia, where the police made a dozen arrests tonight. it is wednesday night, and the big story on "action news" tonight is outrage over the shooting of 37-year-old alton sterling. and the justice department has quickly taken charge of the investigation. it happened early yesterday in a parking lot outside of a convenience store. a person in a car took this cell phone video. two white police officers tackled sterling and pinned him to the ground. we do not know what prompted police to take this action. sterling has, for years, sold homemade c.d.'s from a table set up in the parking lot. the owner of the store said sterling himself seemed confused why the police wanted to arrest

him. the owner took this video and jerked the camera away when one of the officers opened fire. >> both videos show one of the officers taking something out of sterling's pocket. and police say a witness -- police and a witness say that it was a gun. today the authorities held a news conference where we held from the mother of sterling's son who was also there and inconsolable. >> the individuals involved in his murder took away a man with children who depended upon their daddy on a daily basis. >> governor edwards said today that he has very serious concerns that the video is disturbing to say the least. and it was he who asked the justice department to take over the investigation. the shooting has parked protests in various cities, including

philadelphia. "action news" reporter walter perez is live outside of the 9th police district in spring garden. walter, what happened here? >> jim, the protest finally broke up about a half-hour ago, after the 12 people who were arrested were finally released. a protest started around rush hour, snarling the traffic in center city. >> we can't find the money for after-school programs. >> it began with a few dozen people at 12th and market around 6:00 tonight. the number of protesters grew as they moved through center city, blocking off traffic along the way. the group of approximately 200 finally stopped only the vine street ramp at callowhill where several sat down. we spoke with protesters who say that anyone who does not understand what they are doing does not understand theish -- the issue. >> how important is a black man's life. >> a black man was murdered and

it is important. and black and brown bodies matter and we have to show it, even if some of you are inconvenienced. >> we believe that some of you don't know what is going on around you and that's were you are sitting on your couches. doing nothing is part of the problem. >> and the police had to clear the roadway before making 12 arrests. >> passive resistance as you can see, but no one was injured and they will be taken to the ninth district and they will be cited and released later on tonight. >> all the while, picketers held up the anti-police signs screaming at the police officers. and we asked if they take it personally. >> people have the right to say what they want. that's what makes the country great. right to free speech. our job is to not to impede it or be offended by it. >> and it was response to the

shooting death of alton sterling from louisiana. those arrested here will have summary charges of blocking traffic. and they add that tonight's protest is usually a prele prelewd -- prelude of things to come during the dnc convention. and a heat warm until 6:00 p.m. friday, with good reason. the sunset on philadelphia tonight after temperatures hit 95 with a heat index of 97. officials are refinding you to keep hydrated if you are either working or exercisings outside. this is ourers if -- this is our first truly intense heat wave of the summer. >> today the hottest day of the year so far. the high 95 degrees. the air temperature, but the heat index up to 98. this is our ninth day this year of temperatures in the 90s. that's about average. this is likely the start of our

second heat wave of the year. remember the first one in may. three days of 90 degrees. and the humidity wasn't a factor. so this is going to be a lot tougher on our bodies. the highest heat index again felt like 98 in philadelphia. but sea isle city where dewpoints are higher felt like 100. allentown felt like 94. and wilmington felt like 95. and tomorrow, the humidity is going to be up even a little bit higher. so the heat indices can be a tad hotter. that excessive heat warning does continue through 6:00 friday evening along the i-95 metro area. and there really isn't much relief. most of the viewing area has a heat index around 100 tomorrow. a little cooler right along the shore and across the poconos. but even there we're talking about heat indices mid 90s and close to 100. and in addition to heat and humidity also tracking storms and details in the accuweather forecast. jim? >> thank you, cecily.

philadelphia police investigating two violent incidents tonight. they were called out just 18, 19 minutes ago. 20 minutes ago. a girl shot in the leg and she has been taken to st. christopher's hospital. meanwhile, a male showed up at aria frankford wound with a gunshot to the chest. and he is in surgery and the police are trying to determine if the two incidents were related. two people, both in the

hospital, both with bullet wounds at this hour. meanwhile, millions of people viewed this viral video of an attempted kidnapping posted on the 6abc "action news" facebook page today. security cameras captured a young mother entering a southern california store with two small children. seconds later, you see a man snatching a 4-year-old girl. the mother immediately runs after them. the girl fell, escaping the would-be abductors group. the suspect identified as terry random facing charges including kidnapping. the death of a navy seal trainee in may has now been ruled a homicide. 21-year-old james lovelace was dressed in full gear as he struggled to tread water. video allegedly shows an instructor pushing lovelace

thunderstorms tomorrow. a better chance of evening thunderstorms on friday, ahead of a backdoor cold front. that system will kind of limp through on friday bringing us a chance for thunderstorms. and the humidity won't be quite as intense. and on sunday, here comes the change. the heat wave will be over. 86 degrees and keeping the temperatures in the mid 80s through wednesday. wednesday could see a few pop-up thunderstorms with a high of 88. and, of course, david murphy with an update on the timing of the storms on "action news" beginning at 4:30 tomorrow. stay cool. >> cecily, thank you. coming up on "action news," the phillies look to sweep the braves when we continue in a moment.
