correspondent pierre thomas has all the details for us in washington. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, robin. another fatal police shooting, a traffic stop turned deadly caught on tape. igniting anger and concern about police use of force. a new video emerging this morning of another police shooting last night in minnesota. >> we're waiting for -- >> keep your hands up. >> i will, sir. >> viewed more than 1 million times before being taken down on facebook. the video shows a traffic stop turned deadly. 32-year-old philando castile along with his girlfriend and her child pulled over last night the beginning of the incident not on tape but castile was shot, his arm bloodied. the woman in shock but continuing to livestream the situation on facebook. and the video she says that castile had a license to carry a firearm. she says she warned the officer that he would be reaching to his pocket to get his i.d. the officer appears agitated. >> told him to get his hand up. >> you told him to get his i.d.,

his driver's license. >> reporter: she says the officer fired reportedly four times. castile transported to the hospital later died from his injuries. outraged family members and residents heading to the local hospital to protest. as hundreds gather at the governor's mansion overnight demanding answers. this as protests in baton rouge continue overnight as a second video is released showing another angle of the deadly shooting of 37-year-old alton sterling. >> get on the ground. >> reporter: this new video showing one officer pinning sterling to the ground while another officer kneels on his arm outside a baton rouge convenience store. >> you [ bleep ] move, i swear to got. >> reporter: you can see one officer drawing his gun and moments later shots fired. an officer then removes something from sterling's pocket. sterling dying at the scene. >> oh my god. >> reporter: sterling's family wants answers. >> i want justice for al. that's what i want.

it is a case of musical chairs. >> okay, matt dowd, thanks very much. george now to the tragic death of a young navy s.e.a.l. ruled a homicide. 21-year-old james lovelace died during a training exercise in a pool. the death now raising questions about whether some training is too extreme. abc's martha raddatz has more and joins us from washington. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the san diego medical examiner now saying that the actions and inactions of the instructors and other individuals involved were excessive and directly contributed to the death of the young trainee. this morning, stunning new details in the drowning death of navy s.e.a.l. trainee james derek lovelace. the 21-year-old died in his first week of elite navy s.e.a.l. training. it is the most rigorous training in the u.s. military. but this time according to the san diego medical examiner, the training went too far.

it is now being labeled a homicide. according to the medical examiner report, surveillance video from the combat swimming exercise shows lovelace struggling in the water. witnesses say his face was purple. his lips blue. the report says an instructor in the water approaches him and against regulations dunks lovelace, not once but at least twice, at one point someone else in the water pulls lovelace up. away from the instructor who eventually pulls him out still breathing but moments later he's unresponsive. >> if you kill somebody in training, you're doing the enemy's job for them. >> reporter: according to the navy s.e.a.l. foundation, between 2013 and 2015, eight s.e.a.l.s lost their lives in training. that's more than the number of s.e.a.l.s who died from combat or service-related wounds during that same period. and despite labeling this a

woman suit? yeah, that's coming up in our big board. we'll discuss that. >> that is coming up. but we begin with sexual harassment allegations against one of the most powerful men in television news. gretchen carlson filed a lawsuit against roger ailes claiming she was fired because she refused his advances. abc's ryan smith is at fox news headquarters with the latest, good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, george. for 11 years gretchen carlson was a stalwart at fox news known for speaking her mind now she's speaking out against her former boss claiming he subjected her to severe and pervasive sexual harassment and sabotaged her career. >> i'm gretchen carlson. >> this morning, award winning journalist gretchen carlson taking on fox news chairman and ceo roger ailes filing a sexual harassment lawsuit claiming her refusal of his unwanted sexual advances cost her her job. >> thanks so much for being part of the real story. >> reporter: in the suit carlson claims the media mogul subjected her to severe and pervasive

sexual harassment at fox news. alleging ailes injected sexual and/or sexist comments into their conversations. even asking her to turn around so he could view her posterior. carlson alleges when she met with ailes to discuss how she was being treated, ailes told her, you and i should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago. and then you'd be and better and i'd be good and better. carlson only naming ailes as a defendant but in her complaint the married mother of two also claiming her former "fox & friends" co-anchor steve doocy. >> got a fox news alert. >> treated her in a sexist and condescending manner and when ailes learned of her complaints about doocy's behavior ailes responded by calling carlson a man hater and taken off the popular morning show in 2013 and given her own afternoon show but on her final ""fox & friends"" appearance she only had positive things to say about roger ailes.

>> thanks for roger ailes for believing in me. >> she claims that move along with a salary cut and ailes' refusal to renew her contract last month were all in retaliation for her complaints of harassment and discrimination and because she rejected his sexual advances. the 76-year-old ailes, one of the most powerful men in cable news. >> we discovered secret niche in broadcasting half the american people. >> reporter: tells abc news carlson's allegations are false. this is a retaliatory suit for the network's decision not to renew her contract, which was due to the fact that her disappointingly low ratings were dragging down the afternoon lineup. ailes has faced allegation of sexism in the past. this 2014 unauthorized biography claims he wanted his female anchors to show off hair legs. fox news fought back at the author saying he was never given direct access to ailes and the

book was never fact-checked with hem. on wednesday the former miss america tweeting out this blog she wrote last year recounting her experience with sexual harassment as a young reporter. something she's addressed on air. >> i knew over time that the newsroom would start abuzz like oh here comes a former miss america. she must be a bimbo. >> reporter: carlson saying the lawsuit was a difficult step to take but adding, i had to stand up for myself and speak out for all women. carlson is seeking unspecified damages. ailes and fox news claims that the lawsuit is defamatory and offensive and promising to defend it vigorously and the parent company twentieth century fox saying while they have full confidence in ailes and doocy they take the allegations seriously and are conducting an internal review of the matter. >> let's talk about it with dan abrams and sunny hostin. dan, she's claiming sexual harassment in the workplace but the lawsuit against ailes personally not against fox news.

>> typically you would file a lawsuit against the entity that depockets it. it makes it feels like it's personal. she's not suing fox in this context and so the question is going to become, what corroborating evidence does she have to avoid making this he said/she said are there audiotapes. are there e-mails? are there other witnesses, are there contemporaneous notes she took immediately after some of these comments were made? these are the sorts of questions you have to ask in any kind of lawsuit. >> then the other -- >> add to that. i think when you look at this you're right, dan, people typically sue the parent company because they're going for the money. i think the fact that she made this personal and clear her grievance is only with roger ailes and not with fox news or its parent company gives her more credibility because it's personal and sexual harassment generally is so the fact that she's done it this way, i think, shows she's very brave and i think she gives fox news and its parent company a pass, so to speak. >> but also seems to suggest she's not alone here suggesting

that others at fox news were promoted because they didn't rebuff. >> saying she is alone in the sense that she rebuffed it, right? she's making a very, very salacious allegation here which is that other women at fox news effectively got promoted because they did not rebuff roger ailes' sexual advances and so one of the big questions is going to be, what other people are going to come forward in the context of this case? they'll try to drag in all the fox news people on both sides of this. >> i think what's also important in this sexual harassment case, testimony of other victims becomes relevant and is relevant and is admissible. her lawyer indicated that ten other women since the filing of the lawsuit have come forward. so you're right in a he said -- >> who they haven't vetted. >> but the bottom line he said/she said case kind of difficult to prove. >> but let me say on the other side of that, fox news has a

unfortunately it seems to have more of a toy where people like to put up youtube video to see look what my car can do and sometimes there are problems. >> and, the new bombshell article in "fortune" magazine which tesla's ceo elon musk responded to and said there was a huge stock sell-off after the first accident. what do you know about this? >> well, you're right, michael. this is very interesting because when the accident happened on may 8th and there was a death no one said anything. so he -- we don't know if he disclosed but it doesn't seem like he disclosed to the potential investors who raised $1.46 billion for tesla so i would guess that elon musk would try to protect himself and say, oh, yeah, they already knew. we don't know that and i have a feeling the s.e.c. might want to get involved because there's already a probe over that and other accidents that happened post that. >> people watching that.

>> opened up a can of worms. >> even if it's autopile, i'm going to keep my hands on the wheel. >> be a little weird to go without my hands on the wheel. lauren, thank you. now to the battle over immunization. the new law in california requiring up public schoolkids to be vaccinated but now some parents are fighting back and filing a lawsuit and joining us now is dr. richard besser and, doc, what's going on? >> so we do have a battle brewing, all states require vaccination for children entering kindergarten to protect them and other kids in the classroom but there are some outs. if a child has a medical condition that makes vaccination dangerous, they don't have to get vaccinated and then in most states if you have a religious reason, you can get out from a religious exemption and almost 20 states have a personal belief exemption. if you don't believe in vaccines you don't need to get your child vaccinated. california passed a new law that says only children who have a medical condition have an out from vaccination, everyone else has to get vaccinated so there is a group of parents suing

saying this interferes with their personal beliefs and interferes with their legal right to get their children an education supported by the state. >> rich, you're a daddy sitting by two daddies right here and you know how passionate some parents are about this subject matter and when they hear something like this, is this kind of paint them in a corner in it may. we'll have to see what the judge says but in california things were getting bad and had outbreaks of measles. in some schools one in four children were not getting vaccinated and that's an outbreak waiting to happen so we'll have to see what the judge comes down. i'll be surprised if they throw out the vaccine law. for those parents who have a strong belief, their only option may be homeschooling. >> this is a conversation that is far from over. >> or you have to move. >> one or the other like that. okay, rich, thanks so much. and a shake-up in the marvel universe. tony stark is stepping out of the iron man suit. in had is place a new character,

we are back with that bombshell lawsuit raising big questions about sexual harassment in the workplace. former fox news host gretchen carlson getting a lot of reaction after those charges against her former boss roger ailes. abc's rebecca jarvis has more. >> reporter: she's a former miss america turned hawaii powered fox news anchor. >> welcome back. >> reporter: gretchen carlson who just weeks after her contract wasn't renewed now suing her former boss, roger ailes, for sexual harassment. >> and time now for my take. >> reporter: on her website carlson asking her fans to

#standwithgretchen. a 'stache tag that took off on certainly media. thousands weighing in with words like inexcusable and women deserve to live without harassment. carlson's allegations not unfamiliar to women. studies showing that one in four women in the u.s. face workplace harassment. one poll showing 70% of cases go unreported. ailes denies carlson's claims calling them wholly without merit. and, rebecca, here with us along with tory johnson, "gma's" workplace contributor and we have a lot to talk about. rebecca, there's obviously a difference between playful banter among co-workers and sexual harassment. what's the distinction? the law is specific about this, amy. it specifically defines sexual harassment in the workplace as unwelcome sexual advances or conduct that interferes with job performance and creates an intimidating hostile or offensive work environment. the difficulty here is proving those things when these cases actually go to court. >> all right. tory, if you recognize this

behavior, here's the million dollar question what do you do about it? >> so every situation is different and you really have to analyze the environment you're in, the people that you're dealing with, but there are three specific things that you can do. first is call it out immediately. we live in a culture where people feel entitled to say and do almost anything. you just look at social media and see the way people talk without regard to whether it's appropriate or even legal. and so sometimes people cross that line. so if it is inappropriate to you, you call somebody on it immediately. >> so you say that's offensive? that's offensive. this bothers me. i'm uncomfortable and you do it as clearly and confidently as possible. you also want to document the specifics. any time you're going to make some kind of claim that is as serious and as loaded as sexual harassment you better be prepared for your credibility to be questioned and for people to come after you so when you have a realtime record. you don't leave it up to memory to chance but rather you keep a journal in a safe place not on

your work computer. not on your desk at work where you can document specific dates, times, comments, what somebody was wearing, what witnesses were around. in he sort of specifics like that are going to become the evidence you'll need when somebody questions this seriousness of this, then finally report it and this is different depending on where you work, who you work with and who you are alleging this -- >> when it's the boss it's more difficult. >> it's very, very difficult so maybe go to a trusted colleague. rebecca and i were talking about that. sometimes it's a trusted colleague that you can go to for help and reassurance about how to nip this. sometimes it's a boss, it's hr, if you don't feel like you're getting any kind of satisfaction at work you can file a claim with the eeoc, the equal employment opportunity commission and have 180 days to do that. you don't need a lawyer to do it. you can do it yourself and also seeking legal advice is another option. >> rebecca, in your piece we heard just a fraction of what some women and men say they

vesnina. when she's done venus williams takes the court so could we see an all williams final? patrick, i'll ask first about serena. she is on fire out there. playing an unseeded player. who is actually gotten a couple games off serena. >> she's gotten a couple games but only two in the opening set. serena came out today absolutely on fire, lara. that's the way she's been playing the last couple of matches here. she's gunning for number 22. trying to tie steffi graf. hasn't been able to do it. win a major since last year at wimbledon. as i said from the beginning, i'm loving her chances this year. >> all right, so that's looking great. let's talk about venus who is also on fire and you know what, this is her first time making a semi in seven years. how has she been able to do it. >> i'm telling you this is one of the all-time stories to me in women's tennis because venus williams has gone through so much in the last five, six years with her sjogren's syndrome having to handle that, having to deal with that. obviously she's getting a bit older. she's 36 so this is to me one of the most remarkable stories in women's tennis, i love the

competitiveness she's showing. these aplaying with more consistency and has a very tough act -- >> angelique kerber, though, considered one of the favors here. do you think she can do it. >> i think she can, lara, but i think it's going to be tough because kerber beat serena, you remember, in the australian open final this year. she's very feisty. she hits the ball very flat and early and she is an excellent counterpuncher. i would put kerber as the slight favorite but if venus can come big, big serves and big returns no doubt we could have an all williams sisters final. >> i'm rooting for that so big and i'm wondering if we see an all williams will we get full serena or do you think it's tough for her to play the way she can against big sis. >> i think it's tough for both of them and played in so many big matches. as they've both gotten older they handle it better. certainly the last few years it's serena that's been the huge story and she's been the big favorite and she looks up to her older sister so much. she says she set the path for me

to do it. so i think it'll be a good match if they do play, remember, they played at the u.s. open last year. it went three sets. but you just -- it's hard for me to imagine anybody beating serena the way she looks. >> by the way you guys, i don't know if you know then after they each play their semifinal today the williams sisters are playing together tonight in doubles. that is a long day. >> i'm telling you, they are so amazing that they continue to -- trust me when they go out to play doubles they're not looking to practice and get some swings in, they're going to win. i think they should play mixed doubles too and i think that the only person they should play with would be michael strahan. >> i love that. >> that's the guy. >> you know who works almost as hard as the williams sisters is your brother who not only is commentating for espn, bbc but also coaching raonic who is playing federer. is he able to wear all the hats. >> somehow he manages to do it. the man is a genius, he's awesome. great to be in the booth with
