pledging to commit to tolerance and understanding to committee themselves to a new day. it is friday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is the city after the day after for the city of dallas and that includes new information about what happened last night. [gunfire] >> the shooting attack erupted the ends of a peaceful protest, a protest against the police involved shootings in louisiana and minnesota. this was the terrible toll. 12 police officers were shot, five of them died. two civilians were shot. they have nonlife-threatening injuries. at a police identified this man, micah johnson aged 25 as one of the snipers. police used a robot to detonate a deadly device in his vicinity to kill johnson. police chief david brown talked about micah johnson today. >> the suspect said he was

upset about black lives matter. he said he was upset about the recent police shootings. the suspect said he was upset at white people. the suspect stated he wanted to kill white people especially white officers. >> police searched johnson's home in texas today where they found bomb making materials and journals on combat tactics. chief brown said snipers in the plural were responsible for last night's attack and at one point he said three suspects were in custody today. but officials are now being vague about other suspects. the nation's top law enforcement officer attorney general loretta lynch is appealing for calm. >> now, after the events of this week, americans across our country are feeling a sense of helplessness of uncertainty and of fear. and these feelings are understandable and they are justified. but the answer must not be violence.

the answer is never violence. >> of course the events in dallas are having a major impact on philadelphia both its police and its citizens. "action news" reporter jeanette reyes is live at city hall but we begin with john rawlins who is at the 18th police strict in west philadelphia. john, what are police in this city saying about the attack on their brothers and sisters in dallas? >> reporter: well, everyone you talk to, of course, began with condolences today. from there the conversation moved to the issue of a sniper targeting police and how that could impact operations here in philadelphia in the coming weeks. richard ross the police commissioner said there would be changes but he did not go into details. >> the irony of police officers protecting demonstrators and them getting ambushed is a bit much. >> reporter: in the wake of dallas and with the expectation of many marches in philadelphia from now through the dnc the commissioner says there will be changes. >> we respect people's right to protest but obviously in

addition to what we would normally do to protect them, we've got to take additional measures to even protect our officers as well. >> reporter: one short term change officers will ride two to a car a move urged by the fop. >> i know that the city will have their back. i know that the commissioner has their best interests in mindism this week's police shootings in louisiana and minnesota and last night's ambush of dallas officers renewing debate about the history of distrust between police and some minority communities which brings us to this police sponsored block party. an annual event it's fun, an effort for little ones to bounce or to try a police siren but there is a serious intent here to let kids meet officers in a stress free zone. >> we are probably their first time coming in contact with the police and it's a pleasant experience. so, from that then we try to build further with the young people. >> reporter: state rep joanna mcclinton applauds this outreach but says the next step needs to be continuing meetings between the parents of these kids

other adults and police to find common ground that can lead to trust that is not there now. >> everybody is forgetting that everyone on each side is a human being also. all of our lives are very fragile and all of our lives matter. >> reporter: well, indeed both the state rep and the captain emphasized the importance of outreach dialogue understanding and mutual respect between the police and the communities they serve and protect. live in west philadelphia, john rawlins channel6 "action news." jim. >> john, thank you. let's go live to "action news" reporter jeanette reyes at city hall. jeanette, more demonstration tonight on the streets of philadelphia. what's the situation? what's the message? >> reporter: well, from dillworth park it's going to look very different in just a matter of minutes we hear. in fact, as we speak we are waiting for them. take a live look here behind me, you can see police officers through the traffic here gathering anticipating their arrival. all of this happening less than 24 hours after the tragedy in dallas and they say that is something that can not

be ignored. today a march down the streets of philadelphia after a violent week that left a bitterly divided country in mourning. >> we're not condoning that. that's not the -- that's not the way. >> reporter: dontrelle mcduffie says although he partners with black lives he's an individual hoping to spark change. today's more mehing was prompted by the shooting of philando castile in minnesota and alton sterling. >> we're talking about equal justice. i don't care who is black or who is white. what we care about as a people is that we're not treated unfairly because of our black skin. >> reporter: but the deadly shootings of five police officers in dallas last night is now inevitably very much a part of the conversation. >> this is not for that, for us to kill anybody or fight anybody. it's time for us to align and get it together. >> reporter: still, the movement is increasingly the source of intense controversy

and scrutiny particularly its name. >> all lives do matter but i think the attention has been focused so much on those other lives until these police shootings that we haven't been focusing enough on the fact that black lives also matter. >> reporter: mcduffie says he says it will continue to be marked with backlash that a march alone can't change. >> we cannot change people. we cannot change their perspectives. change starts internally. >> reporter: jim, you mentioned there will be several demonstrations and that's exactly the case. in fact at the top of the hour just minutes ago another demonstration started in north philadelphia. they will be making their way through the streets of philadelphia and there will be another one tomorrow evening as well, all of these organizations asking for similar things, justice for african-americans. reporting live at city hall jeanette reyes channel6 "action news." jim. >> jeanette, thank you. and we urge you to stay with "action news" and 6abc.com for the very latest developments from dallas and

>> camden county police have a suspected arsonist behind bars tonight. police arrested 44-year-old charles ricks jr. for a series of suspicious fires set last weekend. seven firefighters were hurt fighting those blazes. ricks lab charged with 14 counts of aggravated arson. he is behind bars on $200,000 bail. police in ocean county say they fired on 29-year-old timothy sauers after he pointed a gun at officers late last night.

the incident happened at 11:32 near the corner of cedar and lanes drives in toms river. sauers ran off after the shooting and jumped into toms river, that according to police. tactical teams found him an hour later. sauers was injured by police gunfire. he is expected to survive. septa officials have called in help from other transportation agencies to ease their overcrowding troubles. just about a week ago septa took more than 100 trains out of service because of a potentially fatal defect. they hope to get the loaner cars up and running by monday. septa's general manager said of the 120 silver liner five cars pulled off the tracks 115 have cracks in their suspension system. atlantic city's former showboat casino reopened today as a hotel only. 850 rooms are now available to book. there are only -- or also 38 ocean front balcony suites.

hotel guests can enjoy a beach bar, a coffee house and a restaurant. tw200 people were rehired to work at the newly reopened showboat. reward being offered for the safe return of a flag stolen from a north wildwood home on the fourth of july. the corcoran family's american flag was laid across the casket of their brother patrick who was killed in vietnam in 1969. today vietnam veteran and radio host joe griffeys announced the reward for the return of the flag. he is not publically disclosing the amount of that reward. in addition, police say if the flag is returned before their investigation ends, no charges will be filed. mercer county officials announced their next round of grants to add more playground equipment to local parks. since it began in 2006, the mercer at play program has put six and a half million dollars towards upgrades and resources. some of the improvements include bocce courts, new

priorities usa action is responsible >> more heat, more humidity. how long does this last. >> not much longer actually. tomorrow temperatures may stay in the upper 80's but it's going to be really humid, really steamy and sunday is going to be a heck of a lot better. much nicer. storm tracker6 live double scan slowing that we do have some scattered thunderstorms around right now. not all that widespread but where they're hitting they're hitting hard and we have a flash flood warning posted near new hope for parts of bucks mercer hunterdon county. this is where up to 2-inches of rain has fallen. could get another 2-inches and double scan live showing this cell that we're tracking, 27 lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes but really the big problem with this is the very heavy rain. you can see that band of red that's moving out of bucks county, it's clipping montgomery county, northeast philadelphia as we zoom in it's just rolled through langhorne. it's heading towards new falls

road. it's beginning to weaken a little bit. trevose feasterville, though is getting this and where we're seeing the red, we can flip this over and show you the rainfall rates. we're looking at the rain falling at the rate of about three to 5-inches per hour. so, this is torrential rain. you can see just south of langhorne, 3-inches per hour, about 4-inches per hour near trevose and this whole system is sliding to the southeast. only at about 10 miles per hour. so, it's moving through very slowly. the humidity is just so high it can pull out a lot of moisture in the air and this is officially a heat wave. this is the third day of temperatures in the 90's making this heat wave number two. wednesday 95. yesterday and today 94 degrees. but the heat index in philadelphia child up to 99. right now it's still pretty steamy out there. feels like 94 in philadelphia, feels like 94 in millville, 91 in allentown. cape may point feels like 84 degrees.

a little bit better there. satellite6 along with action radar showing this system that will put an end to this humidity is a cold front. it's working through the great lakes. you can see it right there. but ahead of it we get those winds out of the southwest so tomorrow temperatures may not crack 90 but the humidity will be very high. so, it's going to be a steam bath and it is going to be unsettled. future tracker showing around 8 o'clock still a few spotty thunderstorms and downpours around. most of the activity gone by 11:00 and then ahead of that cold front it refires tomorrow afternoon around 1 o'clock showing scattered showers and thunderstorms mainly around philadelphia areas north and west and sliding across south jersey into the evening hours. 7 o'clock the union game begins. the storms should be exiting. hopefully everything is gone in time for the billy joel concert. a lot of people asking me that. and then on sunday, finally the humidity is out of here. this cold front is like a broom sweeping the humidity out to sea. it will be seasonably warm, 86 degrees. it will be breezy and again low humidity.

sunday definitely the better of the two days this weekend. so if you are down the shore tomorrow, there will be some showers and thunderstorms especially in the afternoon. not all day but keep your eye to the sky. get off that beach as soon as hear that rumble of thunder. 79 degrees the high and sunday it will be beautiful, plenty of sunshine with a warm breeze. you get a land breeze, not a sea breeze with a high of 84. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, steamy tomorrow with some thunderstorms especially midday into the afternoon. a high of 89 degrees. sunday gorgeous. partly sunny breezy, less humid, 86. we do it again on monday and then things begin to get toasty on tuesday. 89 degrees and guess what? looks like heat wave number three begins the middle of next week. 92 degrees on wednesday. thursday and friday temperatures up into the mid 90's with a possibility of some thunderstorms. and i will have an update on the timing of the storms coming up tonight on "action news" at 11:00. >> thank you cecily. how to hippos celebrate
