night. it weighs on my mind constantly. this killing, it has to stop. >> the shooting in michigan comes amid more pleas for peace and unity in dallas texas. tonight a candlelight vigil will be held for the five officers killed last week and now we're getting some new information about the attack officials say it actually could have been much worse. >> this as we're hearing for the first time from one of the victims wounded in the chaos. abc has more from dallas texas. >> reporter: rick and monica dallas police detectives balancing this intense investigation while honoring their fallen brothers and sisters on the force hosting memorials throughout the day and a candlelight vigil for later this evening. at the dallas police department, a moment of silence for the fallen. dozens of police academy cadets who will one day put their lives on the line paying their respects. the investigation continues into the deadly mass shooting and so do the threats to law

enforcement. >> we're all on edge we are. we're all on edge and we're being very careful. >> reporter: dallas police chief david brown says the sniper who took the lives of five police officers at a black lives matter protest was planning a much bigger attack. but he moved up his plans because of last week's police killings of two black men. brown says the stockpile of bomb making materials found in his home is concerning. >> this person obviously had some delusions. this person also was very committed to killing officers. >> reporter: investigators say the army vet took self-defense courses and did tactical drills at home before thursday night's shooting. after johnson's two hour standoff taunting officers police sent a robot with a bomb to kill him. for the first time his parents speaking out in an interview with the blaze. >> i don't know what to say to make anything better. i didn't see it can coming. >> reporter: dr. brian williams was one of the doctors who worked to save the lives of police officers that

night. >> done to these officers and i grieve with the families. >> reporter: the feeling here in dallas is that people are hopeful as they come together while grieving. the first funerals for those fallen officers happens on wednesday. in dallas, adrienne banker channel6 "action news." >> thank you adrienne. as the investigation in dallas continues to unfold emotions are still running high all around the country. that includes right here in philadelphia where demonstrations about police relations and racial injustice continued for a sixth straight day. chopper6 hd live right now over north philadelphia where a black lives matter protest is about to get under way again. demonstrators say they're going to march down cecil b. moore avenue from broad street to 33rd. this morning another group called showing up for racial justice protested through center city during the rush hour. this demonstration blocked several intersections. again philadelphia police emphasize their duty to keep protestors safe saying impromptu demonstrations though make the job more

difficult. >> between the shootings in dallas, louisiana and minnesota, anger over recent shootings has electrified the race for president. both major candidates hillary clinton and donald trump are recognizing the shootings as tragedies but each is taking their own approach in calling for a solution. we'll have much more on the race for the white house coming up on "action news" tonight at 5:30. meanwhile philadelphia's just two weeks away from taking center stage in the political sphere. you won't have to be a vip to get a taste of the action. political fest will make up nonpartisan exhibits and displays around the city designed to engage convention goers and residents alike. >> we are encouraging everyone to start here headed to the white house exhibit, followed by our main stage theater where we're going to be having live interviews political speeches and our games, political trivia and political

"action news" reporter katherine scott with more. >> reporter: this amtrak train pulled into bryn mawr this morning one of the pieces of equipment septa has on loan. today is the first day of the new interim schedule which comes after septa announced plans to lease equipment from amtrak, new jersey transit and maryland area regional commuter train service. >> i would hope that that

would help cut down on the overcrowding and maybe make it so they're not so delayed. >> just hoping that it comes on time. >> reporter: the lease of the vehicles along the paoli thorndale and trenton lines including here in ardmore. septa lost a third of its regional rail fleet after serious cracks were found in the suspension system. that translated into 13,000 fewer seats. officials say 18 additional cars and three locate motives hit the tracks today to ease overcrowding and delays. the leased equipment means 1700 more seats than last week but that's still -- that still leaves a significant seat shortage. we hope this week is better than last. >> last week not too good. >> i don't know that it's going to be significant. i think it will help, of course. more trains, less crowded. it was very crowded. >> reporter: over in glenside today's new schedule meant additional service between glenside and center city. commuters say leaving early helps as does staying flexible because there's no overnight shift.

>> going to be a long haul. we've dealt with this before with strikes but it's always been a week, maybe two weeks, you know, at the most but this is going to be a couple months. >> reporter: septa says using this leased equipment helps shorten wait times compared to last week. still, there is no overnight fix to this. you are urged to use alternate means of transportation if possible. in ardmore, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." >> one firefighter was sent to the hospital battling an overnight blaze in wynnefield. flames broke out in the 5300 block of west berk street about 1:00 a.m. at a. it took 20 minutes for crews to get it under control. one firefighter was taken to penn presbyterian in stable condition. the extent of his injuries still unclear right now and the cause of that fire is under investigation. >> all right, turning to the accuweather forecast, it was the perfect summer afternoon for the delaware valley. looking live outside right now sky6 hd showing you a very pretty picture from cape may. enjoy the weather while you can, though, especially at the shore. accuweather says hot and humid conditions will return by the

end of the week. we'll be back in the soup. meteorologist cecily tynan is live outside with the details. what if we don't like soup, cecily. >> no choice. get outside and enjoy the weather now then if you don't like that soupy weather because that is heading our way but today very comfortable. 85 degrees in philadelphia right now. 86 in washington, d.c. new york city only 79 degrees and part of the reason why it feels so good is that dewpoints are generally in the 50's. that's a dry air mass. satellite6 along with action radar showing loads of sunshine. we are seeing some fair weather cumulus clouds popping up but once the sun sets, they'll be clearing out and tonight will be a very comfortable night. showing the next 12 hours, temperatures will be dropping down into the 60's overnight. dewpoints will be rising about 60 degrees so it will get a little bit more humid in the overnight hours but generally it's going to be feeling pretty nice. it's not going to last.

humidity will be creeping up as we look ahead. late in the week i'm tracking the return of 90's with a heat index around 100. along with that some afternoon thunderstorms. i'll have details on the timing of those coming up in the full accuweather forecast. monica. >> thank you cecily. from our new jersey news room a new poll shows support is lessening for a plan to expand casinos beyond atlantic city. fairly dickerson university polled registered voters. 57 percent of respondents say they expose casino expansion in the garden state. 35 percent support it. at the beginning of the year it was much closer, 50 percent opposed 42 percent in favor. that proposal will be on the november ballot. >> all right, time now for a check of our "action news" traffic report monday night. >> let's go to matt pelman live in the "action news" traffic center. >> lots of people are back to work today after the holiday week like you monica, welcome back to you. that means added people on those septa regional rails which were already packed last week so even though we have 1700 more seats today as katherine was saying in those new schedules we are still

seeing delays this afternoon. at this point the worst of which is about 35 minutes but again, across-the-board on those rail lines this afternoon expect the trains to be behind. and we've been running behind here on 422 westbound side coming out of king of prussia. a crash westbound by 23 just cleared but it's still a little bit extra heavy. crash is also gone from maple shade along 38 by the pj when he will hasn't's but we still have the one in cherry hill on 70 eastbound at springdale road so instead of 70 and those single digit speeds i would use church road or 38 as alternates. watch out for one in berlin by our lady of mount carmel along the white horse pike and in vineland there's a crash along main road 555 at sheridan avenue. we'll check it again rick and monica, in the next half hour. >> okay. >> sounds good. >> thanks matt. >> thank you. much more ahead on "action news" at 5:00. 500 more american troops are headed overseas in the fight against isis. the crucial battle they'll be helping iraqi forces get ready for. >> in health check tonight you'll meet the doctor whose brush with death has now motivated him to help others

defense secretary ash carter. most troops will be stationed at a air bass recaptured by iraqi forces from isis over the weekend. the plan is to help iraqi troops retake the key city of mosul. >> we continue to look for ways to further accelerate as we have already in many ways the campaign to deliver isil a lasting defeat in iraq and syria. we're looking for opportunities to to more. we're prepared to do more. >> isis captured mosul back in 2014 and has used it as a headquarters ever since. >> incoming british prime minister theresa may says she honored and humbled. she addressed supporters after david cameron announced he'll resign on wednesday. his decision comes after he failed to convince the country to remain in the european union. may who has been britain's home secretary for six years will become the country's second female prime minister.

>> it was a good start to the week for the stock market. the s & p 500 closed at a record high today. the index beat the market set around this time last year. the dow jones and nasdaq are still struggling to meet the numbers investors saw last summer but today the dow climbed 80 points, the nasdaq gaining 31 points on the day. the the s & p 500 gaining seven and change. starbucks is boosting the pay of all employees and store managers at u.s. company run stores by 5 percent or more. the raises will come in star starting october. the ceo says the amount will be determined by geographic and market factors. starbucks is starting go should be healthcare coverage. it will allow them to pick and degrees in a number of options. >> one local doctor is urging lawmakers to pass a bill that could help thousands of people

with rare diseases find effective treatment. >> ali gorman is at the big board with details. >> he's a doctor research an patient battling a rare disease himself. rare disease means it affects a very small percentage of the population but altogether about 30 million americans have one of these 7,000 rare diseases and only about 5 percent have an approved treatment. this bill aims to change that. today dr. david fegenbaum spends his days inside looking for cures for rare diseases. in the past he paid football at georgetown university and was perfectly healthy until he turned 25. at the time he was in medical school. >> started having abdominal pain and night sweats. my lymph nodes were enlarging. over the course of just two to three weeks i went from being totally healthy to being on my death bed. >> he spent weeks in intensive care and was diagnosed with

>> time for accuweather at the "action news" big board. >> meteorologist cecily tynan here with the forecast for the week ahead. looks like it's going to be heating up. >> today was so nice though i think even rick williams went for a run, right. >> no way. >> i ran to the post office -- to the mailbox. >> to the post office. >> not to the post office, the mailbox. then i ran inside. >> that's good. >> even rick had to get outside today. not so sure i believe that. sky6 taking a look at the center city skyline. we've got blue skies and sunshine. some of those fair weather cumulus clouds popping up. no rain today but parts of our region really could use the rain, especially areas north and northeast of philadelphia. atlantic city doing pretty well. since may first, rainfall running 7-inches above normal. wilmington rainfall more than 3-inches above normal. philadelphia slightly above. trenton, though, close to 2-inches below normal and allentown, lehigh valley very dry, close to 3-inches below normal and the drought monitor which is issued every thursday shows that areas really north

and northeast of philadelphia under dry conditions. could use the rain and it looks like we could have some heavy downpours later in the week as we get very humid and very unsettled. right now, though, it feels pretty nice out there. philadelphia 85 degrees. allentown 84. wilmington also 84. trenton 82. you get that sea breeze atlantic city airport 81. beach haven 78 degrees and dewpoints pretty comfortable. dewpoints generally in the mid to upper 50's. that's a dry air mass. except for right along the ocean, right along the bay you get those winds offer the ocean, that ocean influence dewpoints are a little bit higher in the mid 60's. now satellite6 along with action radar showing loads of sunshine, a few fair weather cumulus popping up. we have high pressure right over us and this high pressure will nudge to the east by tomorrow bringing us warm are more humid air but tonight very nice. mainly clear skies, overnight lows dropping down into the 60's. dewpoints around 60 degrees so just slightly humid. 68 in philadelphia, allentown

62, cape may 67 and trenton 65 degrees and the day planner showing tomorrow it will be warmer, it will be a little bit more humid than today at 8 o'clock 72, by 2 o'clock, 85. by 5 o'clock, reaching that high of 88 and then by 8 o'clock, 80 degrees. so, the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow is not going to be as comfortable as today, 88 degrees. on wednesday gets even more muggy, 89 with a possibility of some thunderstorms especially north and west of the city. thursday, though, is when we get into that steamy air mass. 92 degrees, feeling like 100. we do it again on friday. chance of some late day thunderstorms. saturday officially making this the third heat wave of the year with three days in the 90's but then some changes are on the way. i'll talk about that coming up in the full accuweather 7-day forecast. get set to sweat, guys. >> all right. >> once again. thank you cecily. >> summer, july in philadelphia of course. we'll have much more when we come right back. stick around.

"action news" at 5:00 continues. as we're watching the latest developments out of southwestern michigan. a gunman shot and can killed two people inside of a courthouse there on the third floor of the courthouse in saint joseph michigan southwest of gran rapids.

authorities say the gunman walked in shot two bailiffs and shot another deputy. that deputy is being treated at the hospital. during some sort of struggle the gunman was shot and killed. his name has not been released. we're also hearing several other people were injured during the incident. officials are not commenting on those injuries right now. and it's still not clear what prompted the shooting or how the man was able to get a gun inside that courthouse. work that americans feel that their safety is protected. >> reporter: but trump's potential vp pick chris christie placed blame on the protestor and the leadership. >> reporter: rudy giuliani on cbs suggesting the bigger problem is black on black crime. >> if i were a black father and i was concerned about the safety of my child, i would say be very respectful of the police. i'd also say be very careful of those kids in the neighborhood and don't get involved with them because, son, there's a 99 percent chance they're going to kill you not the police. >> reporter: hillary clinton on cnn saying white americans need to step up. >> i'm going to be talking to white people. i think we're the ones who have to start listening to the legitimate cries that are coming from our african-american fellow

citizens. >> reporter: and on that note, clinton has found agreement with some republican leaders including speaker of the house paul ryan as well as a potential vice presidential running mate for donald trump, that being of course newt gingrich. reporting live from washington, lana zak, channel6 "action news." back to you, monica and rick. >> lana, thank you for that report. as lana mentioned new jersey governor chris christie stumped for donald trump in virginia today. governor christie is considered to be on the short list for the vice presidential slot. indiana governor mike pence is also considered to be a top choice for vp. he'll join donald trump on the campaign trail tomorrow. and trump is not getting the pat on the back he was hoping for from his alma mater. the wharton school of business at the university of pennsylvania. more than 2,000 students signed a document called you do not represent us an open letter to donald trump. in part, it said this "we proud students alumni and faculty of wharton are

lanes in bensalem here. the crash happened about 2:00 p.m. it's still not clear what led up to the crash or if anyone was seriously injured. the investigation and cleanup led to a backup several miles long. we have an update about a story our delaware news room has been following since saturday. new castle county police are looking for the person who murdered this man malcolm evans. he was found shot to death in his car in rutledge. at first police thought they were just responding to a car accident but then they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. he later died of his injuries. delaware detectives also arrested two people suspected of breaking into the first baptist church of milford back in april. police say christopher willie and christopher carter broke into the church and stole money from the safe. both are facing a list of charges. >> new jersey officials continue to urge the state legislature and govern chris christie to make a move on the transportation trust fund. they gathered in trenton today to talk about the many problems caused by the current show down. if a decision can't be made

>> a united airlines flight aborted its takeoff from bush intercontinental airport today and blew two of its tires while trying to slow down. airport officials say the plane was leaded down the runway when the pilot reported seeing flames shooting from one engine. the crew slammed on the brakes to stop the plane. passengers were taken out and evacuated but fortunately nobody was hurt. now to a consumer alert. continental mills recalling its krusteaz blueberry pancake mix. this recall affects products manufactured between april and

and a civilian were both injured. we're waiting for some details about the gunman and what sparked the deadly violence in saint joseph, michigan today. president barack obama will go to dallas tomorrow to meet with the families of the fallen police officers and he will join former president george w. bush at a memorial service. this is the way it looked at dallas police headquarters today as police academy cadets held a moment of silence at a growing memorial there. and word came that funerals will be held this week for three of the five police officers gunned down last thursday night. police chief david brown provided some detailed information today that we didn't know before. he said that micah johnson died inside el centro college, not a parking garage as previously reported. he said a total of 11 police officers fired weapons at johnson and two used the explosive device that
