"action news", delaware valley's leading news program, with meteorologist melissa had gee, jeff skversky, czar bloomquist and walter perez sunday night i'm brian taff, the big story on a "action news" tonight is another deadly encounter with police as the target. this time it had happened in baton rouge, louisiana, six officers were shot there today, three of them are dead. late this afternoon investigators confirmed the identity of the gunman, as 29 year-old gavin long of missouri.

he too is dead tonight. and president obama once again speaking out demanding an end to the violence. abc's ray romandi has latest. >> reporter: brian, massive investigation unfolding involving dozen of state federal and local law enforcement agencies. one suspect is dead and this latest violence begins law enforcement officials comes days after alton sterling in baton rouge and deadly police ambush in dallas, texas. the roadblocked off, sirens blaring, and sound like gunshot crackling in the distance. the city of baton rouge, bracing for more violence. >> shots fired, officer down. we have a city officer down shots fired. >> reporter: police officers responding to calls of shots fires judge before 9:00 a.m. when they arrived bullets are aimed right at them. >> i'm here. >> officer down. >> reporter: the president wasting no time in condemning this attack on police.

channel six "action news". hillary clinton issued a statement about the shooting in the last hour. it reads in part, today's devastating a salt on police officers in baton rouge is an assault on all of us. there is no justification for violence, for hate, for attacks on men and women who put their lives the line every day, in service to our families and our communities. and donald trump had this reaction on social media this morning: quote, we grief for the officers killed in baton rouge today, how many more law enforcement officers and people have to die because of a lack of leadership in our country. we demand law and other. moments later on twitter wrote this, we are trying to fight isis and now our own people are killing our police. our country is divided and out of cop troll. the world is watching. and indeed the world is watching, and we will be focused on cleveland, ohio come tomorrow. the national republican convention kicks off there with security concerns, in front of the mind. live in cleveland tonight. sarah with one group's effort to set a positive tone for that convention. we will begin with jim, inside quicken loans arena. jim to day's event set a somber tone for what was to be a celebration week. >> you are exactly right, brian. the as you can imagine shootingness baton rouge this morning have the attention of every law enforcement officer in this city tonight n fact all of the recent acts have of violence both domestic and foreign have effectively turned cleveland, proportionately at least into the most heavily policed city in the america and maybe the world. the question is, will it be enough? no doubt the baton rouge shooting this morning has raised the tension level for cleveland police. for months the focus of the the law enforcement here has been on the prospects of organized protests. >> black lives matter. >> reporter: anti trumpers trying to disrupt this convention and trump supporters exhibiting some of the rough edges that they have had rallies.

and after that the fact that ohio is an open carry state, which means that the protesters can bring, and show their guns, which makes it that much more harder for police to spot and react to potential trouble. the shooting kind. but when you talk to police and other law enforcement the worry isn't just about violent protest even in this open carry environment, the worry is also, about terrorism. cleveland is proud of its restaurant scene town town, just blocks from the quicken loans arena the site of the convention but as we have seen in paris, restaurants, make vulnerable soft targets. >> certainly it has crossed our mind but i've got to tell you the amount of security that we have seen, the amount of police presence has been phenomenal. >> reporter: this is east fourth street restaurant row, and it will be packed with pedestrians and convention goers this week. and yes, both police and civilians are aware that what happened in nice, france must not aloud to happen here.

that is why they have barriers all over the secure section of the city. barriers to stop trucks in their tracks. in fact, every vehicle that comes anywhere near this part of the town undergoes annex stream going over, by the secret service. jack demarchio is former deputy director of home land security. i asked him how law enforcement is making sure that a terrorist cannot get through. >> within of the things they are doing certainly is social media monitoring. so, secret service, the bureau, they are both have scores of officers, and analyst, looking at various social media sites, looking for any issue that somebody there may want to become operational. >> reporter: as we have scenery petely and tragically, no strategy is full proof, not enclose. we saw that in dallas, and yet again, today in baton rouge. and the clergy had has always played a critical role in this city in keeping racial tension

from careening out of control and that includes the shooting death of tamir rice by a white police officer back in 2014. the clergy again this afternoon stepped up. "action news" reporter sarah bloomquist is live at cleveland state university, a couple of miles from here, and sarah a, i know you want to talk about the peace demonstration is today but also about the event you are attending right the now. >> well, jim, that is right free concert underway here tonight at cleveland state university, it is called peace of promise, root are the headliner, philadelphia's own. roots head liner tonight, mary, mary, social activist are taking the stadium dianne guerrero are taking the stage. they are calling on republicans to address social issues including income equality and hiv and aid. we have attended that huge peace rally, this city trying to set a positive tone ahead of the start of the convention. hundreds came from across

cleveland in a show of unity and peace. they marched across the hope memorial bridge a span of links the east and western side of the city. they called the gathering circle the city with love, in light of the event across the world and concerns about protests here, they wanted to set a positive tone ahead of the rnc. matt brought his family including his six year-old son. >> love, and peace, spreading, and we need it right now. so it is pretty important. it is important for him to know that. >> clevelanders are not hot headed. we love our city, we love our neighbors, and despite some differences and stuff, we have respect for each other. >> reporter: police officers on bicycles received applause as they crossed the bridge. then large crowds stood hand a hand in silence cross mile long span, some in prayer, some brought to tears. >> we stand for love, we stand

we've got developing news from the city's rhawnhurst section tonight where bodies of two women were found with their hands bound, inside have of a motel room. "action news" reporter christie ileto live tonight at the scene. christie, what can you tell us about this. >> reporter: well, brian, homicide detectives just wrapped up the scene and while it seems like it is business as usual back here at the motel, the gruesome discovery prompted an immediate

investigation. detectives were combing through room 225 here at the motel for most of the afternoon. police say lifeless bodies of two women were discovered, the pair reportedly had white plastic bags over their head and their hand bound behind their back. right now it is unclear how or why they were killed. their bodies will be taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy. now some motel guests i spoke with who didn't wanting to on camera said they are not surprised this happened here at the motel. i also spoke with motel management and they said they did not have a comment this afternoon. so far no arrests have been made. reporting live from northeast philadelphia, christie ileto for channel six "action news" good that story we will continue to follow tonight, christie, thank you. philadelphia police are investigate the death of the woman found naked and covered in blood in kensington late last night. this is just before 1:11:30 police got a call of the person screaming on the 2400 block of jasper street, when they arrived, they found a woman on the sidewalk there, and medics pronounced her dead

a short time later. they say she had been viciously beaten and police have not released the woman's identity just yet and no arrests have been made here. one person was hurt this afternoon in burlington county, in the crash of an ultra light plane this happened at 1:00 in the pemberton airport. investigators say plane crashed trapping the pilot inside, that pilot did suffer serious injuries, no word at this hour on what caused that ultra light fios is not cable. we're wired differently.

more than 2,000 cyclist put their pedals to the pavement this morning, for charity. it took part in the 29th annual tour of the shore cyclist took off from the irish pub at 20th and walnut in center city and biked 65 miles ending in atlantic city. seven year-old skylar hunter the youngest cyclist to ever ride in the event. ride benefits irish pub children's foundation which raises money for local charities benefiting children as well as families of the fallen police officers and fire fighters. always a great event. >> yes, hot to be doing that today. >> certainly hot. >> but by comparison, comfortable. >> yeah, it really wasn't too bad. that is really, interesting to go say when we have temperatures in the 90's for so long, brian. >> yes. >> this is day four. it gets hotter on monday.

south and east of the 95 corridor as we have a comfortable air mass north and west of philadelphia at the this hour. still pretty soupy to the south. here's satellite six with action radar, it is dry, quiet across the region. what we are tracking for tomorrow is a cold front still off to the west, coming through the great lakes. this will move in from the west/east direction as we go truth the day on monday, win with that comes threat of the showers and storms. the call from accu weather though over next 12 hours partly cloudy, warm and sticky still, dropping down to 65 in the suburbs. 75 degrees in philadelphia for the overnight low. storm prediction center has placed us in a slight risk for finding some severe weather, for monday afternoon, into monday evening, and it is really for points north and west from the poconos down to lancaster and chester, montgomery, northern bucks counties as well. damaging wind is a big concern. possibility of hail. because it is so warm, because it is so hot really, so humid, there is likelihood of some torrential downpours across the region as well. future tracker six showing at 6:00 in the morning with the

tonight, on the eve of the republican convention, the breaking news. the officers shot and killed in baton rouge. several officers targeted, at least three killed. >> shots fired, officer down. >> the gunman shot and killed by police. the fbi now warning law enforcement across this country of potential threats. it comes a little more than a week after the deadly ambush in dallas. and president obama tonight saying there is no excuse for violence against law enforcement. that these attacks are the work of cowards. we're on the scene in baton rouge. and all of this as the republican convention is about to begin here in cleveland. police on high alert here, barricades in place, thousands of officers on duty as american voters now study the words of the two presidential candidates, donald trump and hillary clinton.
