tonight, on the eve of the republican convention, the breaking news. the officers shot and killed in baton rouge. several officers targeted, at least three killed. >> shots fired, officer down. >> the gunman shot and killed by police. the fbi now warning law enforcement across this country of potential threats. it comes a little more than a week after the deadly ambush in dallas. and president obama tonight saying there is no excuse for violence against law enforcement. that these attacks are the work of cowards. we're on the scene in baton rouge. and all of this as the republican convention is about to begin here in cleveland. police on high alert here, barricades in place, thousands of officers on duty as american voters now study the words of the two presidential candidates, donald trump and hillary clinton.

who is best fit in an uncertain time? a nation on edge. a special edition of "world news tonight" begins now. good evening from cleveland, where the republican convention will begin tomorrow. but this evening, this country finds itself once again mourning the loss of police officers shot and killed. first dallas, now baton rouge. three officers killed today. after five were killed in dallas. this time, there was a 911 call reporting someone with a gun. six officers shot before the gunman was taken down and killed. tonight, authorities in louisiana making it clear, they do not believe there are other gunmen are on the loose. but they are investigating whether or not anyone else knew about this.

and president obama saying, make no mistake, justice will be done. here's eva pilgrim. leading us off from louisiana tonight. >> reporter: tonight, baton rouge reeling after a man opened fire at a gas station. >> a lady came up and said there was a subject walking with a coat and an assault rifle out here behind the store. >> reporter: just after 8:30 this morning, reports of a man dressed in all black with a rifle just a mile from state police headquarters. brady vancel was on his way to work. >> when i looked over to the right there was a man running in my direction away from the body with an assault rifle in his hand. as soon as we got eye contact at one another, he stopped in his tracks and turned around and started sprinting the other way. >> reporter: police cars speeding to the scene, s.w.a.t. teams moving in. >> shots fired! officer down! shots fired! officer down! i've got a city officer down! shots fired -- i don't know where the subject's shooting from! >> reporter: the horror, captured on camera from this

car, outside the convenience store. bullets flying as the suspect draws police into a gun battle. police scanner traffic, capturing the chaos as officers are shot. >> i've got two down back here, two down! >> deputy down, deputy down! >> reporter: then, officers locate and kill the suspected gunman. >> we've got eyes on him. he's behind that transformer, appears to be on the phone. >> at this point it appears the scene is secure. we're going to have a robot come and check him out. >> reporter: at first, law enforcement not sure if the gunman acted alone, urging residents to stay indoors, choppers swirling overhead. >> there was a shooting. we believe there are multiple suspects. one suspect is deceased, multiple officers were shot. we do have some that have been killed. that's what i know for sure right now. >> reporter: when it's all over, three officers killed, three more injured, one of those in critical condition. late today, authorities reassuring residents. >> we do not believe or do we have any other shooter held up in any other area in the baton rouge area. >> reporter: tonight officials

in baton rouge asking for prayers. >> until we come together as a nation, as a people, to heal as a people -- if we don't do that and this madness continues, we will surely perish as a people. >> and eva is with us live tonight. initially, they were concerned there could be more than one shooter, but they do believe he was a lone gunman? >> reporter: that's right. police say they shot and killed the lone gunman on the scene, and say it is no longer an active shooter situation. david? >> eva, thank you. and of course, the question, who was this lone gunman, what do we know about his motive? we have just learned his identity tonight. here's brian ross. >> reporter: federal law enforcement officials identified the shooter as 29-year-old gavin eugene long, an african-american from kansas city.

>> officers engaged the subject, and he ultimately died at the scene. >> reporter: police say it appeared to be a well-planned ambush. >> he had a mask on. one subject. all black. carrying a.r. >> reporter: one shooter tracked and killed at this convenience store. >> right there. stop, stop. to your left. to your left. right there. >> we got eyes on him. he's behind that transformer. appears to be on the phone. >> reporter: in the wake of the police shooting of alton sterling in baton rouge, and then the deadly attack on police in dallas by a man who wanted to "kill everything blue that moves," law enforcement in baton rouge had been put on alert last week by the fbi and homeland security for a possible attack. >> these threats are very viable and they're very real. >> reporter: this fbi bulletin from its new orleans office, obtained by abc news, showed images from social media and warned, "multiple groups are calling for or planning riots and/or violence against law enforcement in baton rouge, louisiana, and shreveport, louisiana." >> i've been involved in law enforcement for over 30 years.

i have never seen an environment this dangerous and this polarized as it relates to police in this country. >> and brian ross is with us here tonight. looking at both cases in dallas and baton rouge, it would appear both gunmen had military backgrounds. >> that's right. this is a former marine, discharged in 2010. today was his 29th birthday, david. >> thank you, brian. tonight, this convention center surrounded by fences, nearby roads are closed. thousands of officers are here, prepared for any threat. pierre thomas, on what's being done with just hours to go until the republican convention. >> reporter: against the backdrop of today's horror in baton rouge, cleveland is deploying an army and building a fortress to protect the republican convention.

it's not lost on law enforcement officers that they have a target on their backs. just ten days ago, the ambush in dallas. protesters running as snipers take aim at officers. five officers losing their lives. >> police officers that did not return home from work. >> reporter: it was just three days ago that president obama sat down for a national town hall meeting on policing and race. >> we have to have police that are respected, and we have to recognize the fear their families go through every time they walk out that door. >> reporter: tonight, law enforcement sources tell abc news they're facing perhaps the most volatile and complicated security picture in recent memory. those dump trucks are there to stop cars, trucks, or anything else from getting access to crowds. there are thousands of police officers in this city, including many on bikes, be flexible to to get anywhere quickly.

and there are cameras throughout the city to give complete situational awareness. all of this taking place in ohio, an open carry state. where citizens are allowed to carry guns in public spaces without a permit. >> there's a bushmaster predator. >> reporter: but even this second amendment advocate warned that people should not bring guns when the convention starts. >> i don't encourage anyone to come down here tomorrow carrying if you have no need to. >> pierre, we know there was some confusion in dallas after the police shootings, because of the open carry law there. a push by some now to try to change it, at least temporarily, in ohio. >> it's not going to happen. the governor says he can't suspend the constitution on short notice. >> pierre, thank you. and we should note, for the 17th time in office, president obama addressing a domestic mass shooting, calling anyone that targets law enforcement a coward.

>> we need to be loud and clear, nothing justifies violence against law enforcement. >> i want to bring in jonathan karl, who is here in the convention hall. hard to believe, we were just with the president in the national town hall, and tonight, he's just addressed the nation yet again. >> reporter: over and over, he's had to address the nation. following mass shootings. but there's something different. both in terms of what is happening, and in the president's words. the fear is we're looking at potentially a new trend. the intentional targeting and hunting of police officers. that's why you heard real anger from the president. talking about cowards who speak for no one. >> and my next question, a lot of eyes on donald trump and the tone tomorrow night, really on both presidential candidates, listening to their every word with the nation on edge. >> reporter: no question, these issues will be front and center as they take the stage.

the republicans here in cleveland, and next week, democrats in philadelphia. but david, these are the two most divisive candidates we've seen in in memory, at exactly the time that voters say they want to be unified. in our poll, out just today, 83% say they expect the next president to put a major focus on improving race relations. they want unity, not division. >> jon, thank you. both donald trump and hillary clinton have responded to the shootings in baton rouge. as voters now study their every word. how well they would respond if elected president. tom llamas tonight on what, if anything, changes now with the convention in cleveland beginning tomorrow. >> reporter: tonight from donald trump, this message -- "we grieve for the officers killed in baton rouge today, we're trying to fight isis, and our own people are killing police. and, "we are trying to fight isis, and now our own people are

killing our police. our country is divided and out of control. the world is watching." >> reporter: this week the world will be watching trump. >> it's to be a wonderful day. >> reporter: kicking off his convention after the rocky rollout of his running mate. >> if you look at one of the big reasons that i chose mike, and one of the reasons is party unity, i have to be honest. >> reporter: trump speaking for nearly 30 minutes, mostly on other topics. >> back to mike pence -- >> reporter: but pence, ever the loyal soldier. >> you're amazing. >> reporter: still, pence and trump have big differences. for one, pence has called negative campaigning wrong. >> lyin' ted. little marco. >> reporter: on "60 minutes," pence was asked about trump's tone. >> what do you think about your running mate's campaign and the tone and the negativity of it? >> i think this is a good man who's been talking about the issues the american people care about. >> but what about the negative side? he apologized for being a negative -- >> we're different people. i understand that. i'll give you an example. hillary clinton is a liar. i call her "crooked hillary." she's crooked hillary. he won't -- i -- i don't -- i didn't ask him to do it, but i don't think he should do it because it's different for him.
