good thursday morning as we enter the final day of the republican convention. many still seem focused on last night and what ted cruz had to say or maybe more so what he didn't say. >> or what the crowd had to say. >> that too. >> which was a lot of boosome. the crowd booing him last night after he refused to endorse donald trump. some delegates so angry they started to approach his wife heidi who was in the audience and she had to be escorted out of the arena for her own safety. >> trump responded by entering the arena before cruz was done speaking. still the whole thing overshadowed the keynote address by a vice presidential nominee mike pence. abc's stephanie ramos has the latest from cleveland. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: diane and kendis, good morning. there were some wild nights at the convention here on night three. wild moments, i should say. mike pence's big night as the vp nominee but ted cruz stole most of the show by not endorsing trump.

a huge moment for indiana governor mike pence as he accepts the vp nomination taking center stage on night three of the republican national convention. as the party gets to know the other half of the presidential ticket. >> i accept your nomination to run and serve as vice president of the united states of america. >> reporter: but before his grand entrance two of donald trump's former rivals also addressed the convention crowd, marco rubio taped a message. >> after a long and spirited primary, the time for fighting each other is over. >> reporter: and trump's toughest challenger for the nomination, ted cruz, took the stage. >> i want to congratulate donald trump on winning the nomination last night. >> reporter: his speech leading to high drama. the crowd in an uproar for what cruz didn't do. booed loudly for not endorsing him as trump tiptoed in to hear

his son speak. >> never have i been more proud to be a trump. >> reporter: the crowd still angry with cruz, there were confrontations with him behind the scenes and his wife heidi was escorted out. trump tweeted soon after, wow, ted cruz got booed off the stage. didn't honor the pledge. i saw his speech two hours early but let him speak anyway. no big deal. the most important night of the convention is tonight. donald trump's daughter ivanka will formally introduce her father as he formally accepts the party's nomination. kendis, diane. >> stephanie, we certainly know the kind of reception cruz got inside the arena but apparently he got a different reaction after he left? >> reporter: absolutely, diane. ted cruz got a very warm welcome at the hotel. the texas delegation was there and they just burst into applause once they saw him, cheered him on saying ted, we love you. we're behind you all the way but then cruz was asked why he

didn't endorse trump and here's what he said. i laid out a very simple standard for a president who will defend liberty and be faithful to the constitution. i hope very much that is who the next president will be. and that was it. >> and that was it. i'm sure there will be more to come as a result of last night's speech. stephanie ramos live for us in cleveland, thank you. so, we've had 36 hours of denials from the trump camp and now they're finally admitting that melania trump's speech included lines from michelle obama's 2008 speech. >> a speech writer thanked trump for his response. adrienne bankert is here with the details on that. good morning, adrienne. >> reporter: good morning. yes, donald trump saying his wife is a strong woman but it's an in-house staff writer taking the heat for melania trump's speech. portions of which are exact duplicates of what michelle obama said on the convention stage in 2008. in an apology letter meredith mciver said she and melania

worked together on the speech discussing many people who inspired her including michelle obama. she admitted melania read her some of the portions from mrs. obama's 2008 speech which mciver wrote down and included in the final draft without checking to see that they were the same. she wrote this was my mistake and i feel terrible for the chaos i've caused the trumps and mrs. obama. mciver tried to resign but donald trump is keeping her on the team telling our george stephanopoulos all is forgiven. >> she's been with me a long time. she is a very good person. she came to see me because she hated to see the conflict and she made a mistake and, you know, people make mistakes. we all make mistakes. i thought it was terrific the way she came forward and said, look, it was a mistake i made and thought it was unfair to melania. >> reporter: since that speech melania has not been seen in cleveland. last night at the convention, trump beaming with his children seated beside him. the campaign says that melania

was in new york and she's expected in cleveland tonight. kendis and diane. >> all right, adrienne bankert, thank you. and sources say ohio governor john kasich turned down an offer to be donald trump's running mate. >> donald trump jr. asked a senior kasich adviser if the governor would like to be the most powerful vice president in history taking charge of domestic and foreign policy. according to "the new york times" when asked what trumpson would be in charge of his son responded, making america great again. well, count on abc news for complete coverage of the final day in cleveland. we'll have a live report, a special one, across all time zones tonight at 10:00 p.m. eastern time. a heat dome is creating extraordinary heat for the central u.s., even for late july. there are heat advisories up until at least friday with humidity today it will feel like more than 110 degrees across the northern plains, possibly 116 in

minneapolis and then it heads east. abc's rob marciano is tracking it for us. >> the heat moves to the east. high temperatures in the mid-90s in new york and near or over 100 in d.c. it's going to be a long stretch of uncomfortable, unhealthy and for some unsafe levels of heat. >> and the scorching conditions are keeping firefighters busy especially in the west. what fire officials are calling a suspicious blaze broke out into eastern utah spreading through a neighborhood and destroying at least ten mobile homes. and in northern california, this wildfire erupted along the median of a busy highway briefly shutting down traffic there. still ahead a computer outage grounds flights and causes a ripple effect. southwest airlines now has a warning for travelers this morning. plus, caught on camera. an unarmed therapist trying to help a patient with autism suddenly shot by police. this morning he's talking from his hospital bed. and the moment so many are buzzing about on social media. the kiss attempted by donald trump.

this is the scene at l.a.x. or was the scene at l.a.x. airplanes lined up at the gates after a computer outage grounded flights. so you see thousands of flights those for southwest were either delayed or canceled leading to a travel nightmare for passengers. the airline's website was down meaning travelers couldn't even check in, buy tickets or check their flight status. late last night the airline tweeted it was still manually checking passengers in and warned today's travelers to check flight status online and arrive at the airport early as long lines are possible again. in southern california officials are hoping to soon re-open five miles of popular

rich donors high above the convention floor every night is what the republicans call club 45. fine wine, whiskey and hot hors d'oeuvres for the big money people being asked to spend millions of dollars to help make donald trump the 45th president. it's a place where reporters are not welcome. >> it is a closed private event. can you please turn off the cameras. >> reporter: of all the big republican donors to come to cleveland, none is being more highly courted than the man getting out of this black car, sheldon adelson, a billionaire casino owner from las vegas whose private security guards tried to block our cameras on a public street outside his downtown hotel. >> you need to go across the street. >> reporter: brian ross, abc news, cleveland. >> next up, some scrutiny this morning for police in north miami, florida, following the shooting of an unarmed black man. it shows charles kinsey with his hands in the air, the person sitting next to him is an autistic man who kinsey cares for. kinsey was trying to get that

man back to a facility after he wandered off. officers then approached with guns drawn, they can be seen nearby and kinsey can be heard saying neither he nor his patient have a gun. but the officer fires three shots striking kinsey in the leg. >> i'm really worried about him than myself because i got my hands up. they're not going to shoot me. wow, was i wrong. >> the officer who fired the shots has not been identified and has been put on administrative leave. kinsey's family says they want to see that officer punished. the police are looking into the incident with the help of the state attorney's office and police were responding to reports of a man threatening to shoot himself. a murder suspect would escaped from a courthouse last friday was recaptured. dayonte resiles was captured at a hotel in west palm beach county. he eluded unarmed deputies slipping out of his jumpsuit, handcuffs and shackles and dashing out of the courthouse door. you see there.

five people have been charged with helping in his escape. in chicago two men there imprisoned for 23 years, they're now free this morning after murder charges against them were dropped. an investigation revealed police misconduct led to their convictions. neither man ever confessed and there was no eyewitness testimony or even evidence linking them to the crime. they had long claimed they were set up by chicago police detective who is being investigated for several other wrongful convictions. you can call this one a sudsy situation at the intersection of two interstates in denver. a semi truck rolled over on a ramp as the trailer split open kind of like a beer can, the thing is a little ironic, it was hauling beer. a lot of which ended up on the interstate below. >> oh, my. >> a toronto end loader was eventually brought in to clean up the debris. truck driver was not injured. >> if they needed some cleanup help -- >> you would volunteer. >> yep. some big news from nascar. four time-champ jeff gordon coming out of retirement to race
