making news in america this morning, the nominee, donald trump, makes it official accepting the gop presidential nomination. the billionaire businessman laying out his core message. >> nobody knows the system better than me, which is why i alone can fix it. >> his plan for america in one of the longest convention speeches ever, but the night not without controversy. we're live in cleveland. breaking overnight a brush fire spreads to a poe tell creating a massive blaze. guests inside were forced to evacuate for their safety. we have new video just in. and the heat dome dominating the country on the move scorching temperatures for most of the nation where triple-digit heat is expected this weekend.

extra long 1:15 speech bringing a trump supporter to tears. >> i havican party doesn't embre his lifestyle but we do. we love him. >> reporter: then came a familiar theme throughout the convention, trump intensifying attacks against his democratic rival. hillary clinton. >> this is the legacy of hillary clint clinton, death, destruction, terrorism and weakness. >> reporter: now, kendis and diane, if you listen closely, you can hear some of the equipment and some of the teardown that's happening right now on the convention floor. as soon as everyone cleared out crews came in for the cleanup clearing out all of the chairs, lifting the red carpet, sweeping up all of those popped balloons that you'll remember that there were 125,000 balloons just hanging on to the ceiling, those balloons came falling down with

convention that also featured a historic moment. there was a silicon valley billionaire who was expressing gay pride. >> and as stephanie mentioned trump's daughter highlighted women's issue taking some by surprise. abc's adrienne bankert is here with reaction to ivanka trump's speech. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. people have called ivanka trump donald trump's secret weapon. he even joked that she would be a wonderful vice president. his devoted daughter delivering a rousing speech with an appeal to women, young voters and the many who haven't necessarily felt a part of either party. >> like many of my fellow millennials i do not consider myself categorically republican or democrat, more than party affiliation, i vote based on what i believe is right for my family and for my country. >> reporter: and ivanka trump not only touted her father's leadership and business abilities but he is a proponent for equal pay for equal vote and reaction on twitter mostly

complimentary. she picked up fans across the aisle chiming in she was speaking more to democrats than republicans at some points however one tweet is not so nice. the estate of the late beatle star george harrison calling out the campaign for having her walk out to the song "here comes the sun" saying it was offensive. the rock group queen was upset about the use of its anthem and started complaining earlier this summer for trump's campaign using the song "we are the champions." kendis and diane. >> all right. a lot of fans get upset about these things but there's not a ton they can do. >> not a lot but they did use the rolling stone, as well. >> defiant again. abc's adrienne bankert, adrienne, thank you. >> speaking of defiance, ted cruz standing his ground after getting booed off the convention stage wednesday night. >> so many republicans were outraged cruz refused to endorse donald trump, instead telling the crowd to vote their conscience. cruz met with the texas delegation yesterday and adamantly defended his decision not to honor the pledge to

support the gop nominee. >> that pledge was not a blanket commitment that if you go and slander and attack heidi that i'm going to nonetheless come like a ser vial puppy dog and say thank you very much for ma lining my wife and maligning my father. >> cruz called his decision a matter of principle and also made it clear it was intensely personal. >> so as stephanie mentioned democratic national convention kicks off monday in philadelphia and hillary clinton expected to announce her running mate today in the battleground state of florida. senator tim kaine and secretary tom vilsack among the top contenders. southern california, a brush fire spread to a motel filled with guests. it happened at the super 8 motel forcing people to evacuate. this dramatic video shows some of those guests running to their cars and shouting to alert others, as well. at least two buildings and several cars were burned. so far no injuries reported.

>> we are also following the dangerous heat wave that's impacting some 100 million americans. the hot, sticky conditions triggered violent storms in minnesota and wisconsin that created a major mess there. falling trees are blamed for killing two people at a boy scout camp. now, forecasters say this could be the most significant heat wave to hit america in four years. and it's not over yet. far from it. meteorologist rob marciano tracking it. >> we have heat warnings up from coast to coast once again. it's going to feel like 110 in places like st. louis, 105 in dallas and by saturday that hot dome smothering the east coast, mid-90s in new york and boston and 100 or more in d.c. and philly. >> all right, quite -- people have to try to stay cool in all that heat. rob marciano there. well, still ahead an american community with thc found in their water. >> breaking overnight a college basketball player collapses after a team workout. the investigation now into his death under way.

a fireball across the nighttime sky in western states got a lot of attention overnight. this video was taken in las vegas but there were also sightings in southern california as well as neighboring arizona. we've posted more of the video on our website. atmfans.com. a chicago police officer is recovering this morning after being shot. the officer and his partner approached a man in a city park who was acting erratically. that man pulled a gun out of his backpack and started firing. he was killed in the exchange of gunfire with police. the police superintendent said

it was another example of too many guns and too many people willing to use them. the injured officer, though, will be physically okay. one of the fallen baton rouge police officers will be laid to rest today. matthew gerald was only on the job four months before he was gunned down. he served in the marines and army and will be buried in a veterans cemetery not far from baton rouge. there will be a full transparent investigation of the shooting of an unarmed black man. the officer did not have the same vantage point as this video which shows charles kinsey and an autistic patient he was caring for on the ground. the police union claims the ivor who opened fire thought kinsey was in danger and that he meant to hit the patient. residents in a small colorado town have been told not to drink water from their taps. that's because some tests there in hugo, colorado, have found the water is contaminated with thc. the psycho active chemical in
