the city of philadelphia is now the epicenter of american politics, the first events kicked off today for the democratic national convention now that the rnc has wrapped up in cleveland. we begin our team coverage with brian taff who is live inside the wells fargo center where the delegates will nominate hillary clinton next week. brian. >> reporter: hey, good afternoon guys from the wells fargo center as you just said the epicenter of the political world over the next week and the headquarters of our coverage of the democratic national convention. this is our broadcast booth high above the convention floor with a direct view onto the stage from which hillary clinton will accept the nomination for president next week. and on with the eyes of the world will be focused every single day. here's a live look at the arena from our convention cam. it's devoid of delegates at the moment but this place absolutely swarming with workers looking to dot every eye cross every t before the main event gets under way on monday when the stakes are this big, there is no detail

too small to be considered. "action news" reporter john rawlins also here with me today. he's live not far from where i'm seated with more on the big reveal that happened in this building this morning. hi, john. >> reporter: hi, brian. i'm tell you it's fascinating. i was here a month ago june 22nd the dnc had just taken over the building they had taken out 4,000 seats down to the concrete floors. i didn't think they could get anything done in the time period they had but you can look behind me, it is amazing. what you have now is a big time set for a big time convention. >> ♪ >> reporter: the great reveal this morning, the dnc podium and video wall complete with three sided rotating panels in the lower left of your screen called per rye act. >> reporter: ids. >> it's got perry actoids which spin and allows to us change the look of the stage from moment to moment speaker to speaker. >> reporter: the big stage is ready but there was still

plenty to do today. >> greetings from the delegates from delaware the first state. >> reporter: there were sound checks and camera checks and last minute wiring. the dnc says 500 workers have installed 400 miles of cables a group photo of some of those doing the work. who are you guys. what did you do? >> worked the dncu you've been here for the last many weeks. >> four weeks. >> reporter: stage hand arthur kenny has been busy. he was here 16 years ago for the rnc. >> i'm meeting all the different politicians. i was on stage actually where the elevator was and where the politicians came up and all. >> reporter: at the rnc. >> yes. >> reporter: where will you be this time. >> i don't know exactly where i'll be this year. hopefully on stage again u thousands of thousands of balloons. at the suite level channel6 staffers with the set for coverage and yes they said it will be ready. >> it will be ready.

>> reporter: well, he was right, ed was right they are ready. they got done with plenty of time. according to the dnc all of this that you see here the building up the arena and then the tearing down will take something like 19 days to tear down, estimated cost 35 to $50 million. live on the action cam, john rawlins channel6 "action news." back to you brian upstairs. >> john, it's a thing of beauty. they've done a nice job here so far. thank you john. let's switch live to vernon odom live outside the constitution center keeping an eye on the other big reveal expected today possibly any moment. hillary clinton's vice presidential pick and vern as you might guess speculation is very much swirling. >> reporter: it is brian, that's indeed been the question all day. will secretary clinton reveal her choice and just moments that has been the word seeping out of the washington circles all day but there's been little or nothing in terms of exactly who she he will tap. the odds makers believe

virginia senator tim kaine the former governor of that state will be hillary clinton's running mate. some call him a safe pick meaning he will do no harm to her chances of beating donald trump in the fall. another possibility was former governor tom vilsack. >> she believes that she doesn't need to offer any further concessions and she's making a safe choice, somebody who will do no harm. >> reporter: cory booker of new jersey is mentioned as another possibility. as the anticipation builds by the hour now some thoughts from some random rank and file democrats. >> i think it should be a man because i don't think this country he is ready for two women on any ticket. and i think it could possibly be kaine from virginia because he speaks mannish and i spanish.

organizers today. trump declared it one of the most love filled conventions in history but he wasn't feeling the love for ted cruz who declined to endorse trump during the convention. trump says that's okay. he he doesn't want cruz's support anyway. >> come and endorse over the next little while. 'cause he has no choice but i don't want his endorsement. what difference does it make? i don't want his endorsement. just ted, stay home, relax, enjoy yourself. >> trump's comments today follow his 75 minute long convention speech last night. you can read more about that right now at 6abc.com. >> all right. time now for a check of the accuweather forecast and what's been another scorching day. >> an excessive heat warning goes into effect this weekend. we'll head over to meteorologist adam joseph who is live at the big board with the details. it's going to be a hot one. >> it is brutal. it is blistering out there right now. 96 degrees is the air temperature in the lehigh valley, 93 philadelphia,

reading, 90 in wilmington, 90 at the atlantic city airport. it's just right along the immediate shore where temperatures are catching off of a wind out of the southeast so it's 81 in beach haven and 83 in cape may. you factor in the humidity yesterday i talked about how it would be oppressive and the heat would be excessive today. it is. 101 right now is what it feels like in the lehigh valley. dangerous heat there. 99 in philadelphia, 96 in reading, 95 in wilmington and it feels like 98 degrees in dover. this excessive heat is going to continue right into the upcoming weekend through monday with that warning in effect for wilmington, philadelphia, trenton. on either side of that i-95 corridor a watch ooh effect. really not much in the difference here between this watch and warning. everyone is going to feel this extreme heat with those heat indices in the upper 90's to low to mid 100's. so, as we take a look at the next five days here, these are air temperatures, 98 saturday, 95 sunday. a record high 99 on monday and

still 95 tuesday and wednesday and when you take a look at some of these impressive numbers, the last time we hit 97 or 98 degrees in philadelphia it's been three years. we are forecasting that high of 99 which means it has been since 2012 that we've been this hot with those air temperatures. we'll talk more about the heat indices and if there's any relief at all with the reply to humidity rick or storms coming up in full accuweather forecast. >> all right, we will check back in later. thank you. as adam mentioned this brutal stretch of temperatures will continue for awhile leaving people across the region ton sweat it out through the sizzling dog days of summer. "action news" reporter trish hartman is live at the art museum. trish you have been talking to people who are trying desperate to beat the heat. >> reporter: yeah, rick, they're doing the best they can. the city's health commissioner has issued a heat warning starting tomorrow and lasting through monday so encouraging people to find slade or air conditioning and to stay

hydrated. we talked to men he tea of people trying to beat the heat today bracing themselves for the days to come. on a hot day like this, there's nowhere else these two-year-olds would rather be playing. how does the water feel? >> cold. >> reporter: the chilly water at sister cities park in center city was just the ticket on this sizzling day and as the temperatures are expected to heat up over the next week, these moms are thinking about how to keep their little ones cool. >> lots of water parks, going to the pool and staying inside in the air conditioning. >> we just romp around and try and hit the city parks and we're in the wissahickon a lot trying to stay cool. >> reporter: many outside found respite in the shade or with a nice cool bottle of water but most would not choose to wear a 50-pound backpack as they walk around the city. that's this man's job. >> it has been pretty brutal but you take breaks done a little section of the time. >> reporter: he's using google technology to map the city's parks and trails all of

>> ♪ >> the north miami police officer who fired at a black mental health worker who was lying in the street with his hands up says that he he wasn't the intended target. charles kinsey was slot in the leg while he was trying to convince an autistic patient to he go back inside a group home. the officer says he was actually trying to shoot the patient because he thought that kinsey needed protection. this investigation has been turned over to the state attorney's office. >> well, gas will cost 23 cents more per gallon in new jersey if a brand new deal goes into effect in the garden state. democratic leaders in the state senate and the assembly

say they've agreed on a compromise to fund state transportation projects. while the gas tax would go up the plan also includes tax breaks. there includes a tax credit for veterans, retirees and the working poor. the plan would also eliminate new jersey's estate tax. governor chris christie says he has not received the specifics of the plan but will review them once he gets them. >> "action news" traffic report. >> it is friday. so let's say hello to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. t.g.i.f., matt. >> yes, yes, getting home is costing plenty of time this evening because of a bunch of complications rick and alicia. first the first state, that makes sense where there's a crash on 95 southbound by 202 could concorde pike. speeds in the 20's towards wilmington. stay on 495 despite the construction by edgemoor road. if you're headed to the poconos trying to get to the northeast extension have i yacht east west turnpike there's a broken down vehicle eastbound approaching norristown taking out the left lane so speeds there are just

in the teens coming away from valley forge. and in north coventry some downed wires blocking 724 this afternoon by vaughn road by giovanni's pizza. use 422 or cedarville road. live look in south philadelphia this is 95 as you get on the girard point bridge. disabled vehicle here is on the shoulder. this is southbound. we've also got plenty of northbound traffic, shore traffic headed toward the walt whitman bridge. and nearby the ramps from 95 to broad street will close later this evening. northbound one is going to be closed all week. southbound most of the week as we get ready for the dnc and in the weight he restrictions along 95 the 5-ton maximum go into effect midday tomorrow. that means as of midday tomorrow if you're driving a big rig a big dump truck a big bus you can't use 95 between the platt bridge and the vine street expressway. if you're in a passenger vehicle you'll see extra traffic on the vine the schuylkill and the platt because of all those big vehicles detouring off of 95. we'll talk more about the convention and other stuff

alicia in the next half hour. >> all right, matt, thank you. yahoo could finally be settling on a buyer and it looks like verizon is a frontrunner. multiple reports say verizon is set to buy yahoo's properties and patents. the sale is not expected to include real estate. both companies declined to comment on the report. now to a look at the closing numbers on wall street. all green arrows to close out this work week the dow jones picking up about 53 and a half points. the nasdaq up 26 points and the s & p 500 also up nine points and change on the day. >> alall right, nice way to end the work week. time now for the accuweather forecast on this friday. >> green arrows there but red arrows in the weather department. adam joseph tracking some pretty extreme heat head heed our way. >> yes, here today and it's going to last through almost that seven-day forecast. as we look at sky6 live in cape may this is a place where they're beating the heat today

with a nice sea breeze off the atlantic. if you're down the shore tomorrow you will bake on the sand with a westerly wind, no sea breeze which also can bring green heads in like brigantine one of those locations that can be inundated by those green heads when you get that land breeze. dewpoints are back to 70 right now oppressive and tropical for wilmington philadelphia trenton dover, beach haven 74 degrees, lehigh valley upper 60's and when you factor that in with the air temperature feels like 101 in the lehigh valley. excessive heat for reading at 96, the same for philadelphia at 99. 98 in trenton and right along the shore even cape may point it does feel like 90 degrees despite you do have a little bi

>> ♪ >> we're still working to learn the name of the man who was should there and killed on the street last night in west philadelphia. police tell us someone shot the 21-year-old in the head at point blank range on the 5700 block of locust street. the victim died at the scene. police have not said who killed him or why. police at the university of delaware say they have caught the two men behind a rash of thefts around campus. 21-year-old marquise clark and 21 year l.a. quinn stuart are charged in connection with seven different thefts. police say they stole cell phones from three people at the carpenter sports building last week. as they investigated those crimes, they found more victims from the very same area. both suspects are out on bail. >> the new castle county

courthouse has a new name today. and it honors a civil rights pioneer. the action cam was at the ceremony on king street in wilmington where governor jack markell officially renamed the building the leonard williams justice center. in addition to his work on civil rights he also served as the municipal court judge. williams passed away in 2013. it was graduation day in south jersey for more than two dozen junior police officers. the winslow township police department hosted this ceremony for 31 junior police academy cadets. the goal of the program is to teach kids about how to be the best possible members of their community. it's also a way for officers in the department to bond with the community they serve. >> in trenton show casing how the power of free live music can turn neglected open spaces into bustling destinations. >> ♪ the capitol green in new

talkers. >> but first philadelphia police are acknowledging that the city has had a particularly violent week this week. as investigators work to make arrests community members are hoping to promote peace. "action news" reporter bob brooks is live at police headquarters with more on what's being done to curb the crime. bob. >> reporter: well, rick, we wish there was an easy solution to all of this but we know that there's not. but the police and community leaders we spoke with say that the only way the violence will stop, peace again, there people come together. last saturday, the 2400 block of jasper street, a woman is found bloodied, dead on the street. philadelphia police say the victim is 35-year-old ricky morgan. last night on locust, a 21-year-old man was shot and killed. this is all footage from the homicide scenes that "action news" reported on this week totaling seven in all and what has no doubt been an extremely tragic week for violence. >> you don't wander to he see -t

to see any homicides. >> reporter: what's the cause. according to philadelphia pd lieutenant john stanford there's many reasons but none bigger than. >> too many guns on the street. in terms of people are shooting at each other killing each other over things that just really don't make much sense. >> reporter: though he wants the city to know there's just six more homicides this year compared to last and less violent crimes are down overall. >> robberies, rapes, burglary, theft from autos, things like that, those are all down. >> reporter: a memorial service in kensington celebrated ricky morgan's life today. >> nobody deserves to die the way she did. >> reporter: in her honor they asked for the violence to stop and during this week show the country the meaning of peace. >> when violence happens so often it can become a norm. when people feel unsafe that's not okay. >> reporter: back out live here, no doubt inner city crime a hot button issue right now, something both presidential candidates are talking about and we will be sure to follow along. for now reporting live outside

police headquarters, bob brooks, channel6 "action news." >> bob, thank you. the woman accused of kidnapping a baby from the king of prussia mall is planning to use an insanity defense. police say sherri amoore bee friended the newborn's mother in march and took the little boy while his mom was distracted with another child. the boy was found safe at amoore's apartment. her attorneys have now filed court documents laying out their plans to use an insanity defense. they say amoore has mental health problems relating to a false pregnancy and a subsequent depression. >> time for another check of the forecast. as we mentioned a lot of folks coming into town for the dnc and hopefully they've got plenty of water on hand. >> light loose clothe, a lot of hydration. if you're going to be outdoors for any period of time as we look at the numbers right now, they've already spiked up, center city 93 degrees. you can see the haze, almost kind of a soupy look to the atmosphere. the dewpoint at 70's.

winds south-southwest 16. the heat index at 99 degrees and up in the lehigh valley northampton county and easton, 96 degrees the dewpoint at 68. your heat index 101. west-southwesterly wind there at 16 with just some cumulus clouds developing and the place that is catching a bit of a break here, ocean city and all of the shore towns, 80's right now for your temperature. >> 80's. >> yeah, with that wind out of the east-southeast at seven. notice the index, it's he 93. even though the air temperature temperature is 83 the feels like 93. you go in the water and you don't feel anything at that point. we'll chat about this excessive heat warning that will be in effect for many days in a row. we'll have all those numbers coming up with that seven-day forecast in just a little bit guys. >> okay. thanks adam. >> yeah. >> well, we are just days away from the start of the democratic national convention and today we finally got a glimpse at the stage which was

kept under wraps until this morning. let's go thrive brian taff inside the wells fargo center. brian sitting at our shiny brand new 6abc set right there in the wells fargo center. >> yeah, looks great. the crew here has done a fabulous job putting this together for what will be an extraordinary week of coverage. yes, very busy here and a not so small army of workers buzzing through this building right now. meanwhile in cleveland, the opposite effort is under way. breaking down a similar setup of the republican national convention. about that event. one notable figure was notably absent from it, ohio governor john kasich. we learned in recent days that despite his dislike maybe even his disdain for donald trump, trump campaign actually wanted kasich to be the vice presidential candidate before they offered that job to mike pence. kasich said no. not only that, like ted cruz, kasich refuses to endorse trump. well, this afternoon the governor and i sat down at the union league in philadelphia for a wide ranging conversation about his

opposition to his party's nominee and the future of the republican party under donald trump. and we talked about a question many in the gop who do not support trump might be wondering. >> you listen to you and you listen to ted cruz they say i'm going vote. i'm not going to vote for hillary clinton and i don't know that i like donald trump so what do you do? what do you do? >> i don't know what i'm going to do yet. we'll have to see if things get close -- as things get closer to november and, you know, i just don't think, though, that we're in a good spot. i don't know what i'm going to do yet. i'm going to -- i'm waiting to see if i can see a unifying donald trump, a positive donald trump and if i see it great. if i don't see it then i've got to figure something else out. if you're a union fire you can n win. if not you're unlikely to. >> governor kasich left the door open to voting for a third party a libertarian candidate johnson. despite all that kasich had

enforcement. the action cam was in laurel springs as they graduated from junior police academy today. they spend the past week learning all about life on the job. officers from the gloucester township police department provided the recruits with hands-on training which included physical fitness drills. >> a shortage of volunteer firefighters in delaware should be over thanks to a new law. in the past anyone applying to be a volunteer firefighter had to pay for a background check which can cost more than $50. but today governor jack markell signed a bill that waives the fee. the volunteer firefighters association says this should be great for recruitment. >> and still to come on "action news" at 4:30 we've got the latest reaction from north carolina when the nba has made an all-star exit. >> a teen goes out of his way to help a complete stranger. this moment meant the world to her family. it's an act of kindness we can all learn from. >> meteorologist adam joseph is back with the full forecast

>> ♪ >> north carolina's governor is making it clear that he's unhappy with the nba's decision to take next year's all-star game out of charlotte. the move is in response to the state's controversial bathroom bill which limits antidiscrimination protections for the lgbtq community. governor pat mccrory says the nba is setting a dangerous

had a crash in wilmington this afternoon. 95 southbound by the concorde pike. looks like speeds are on the increase there although they're still better on the southbound side of 495 despite the ongoing construction ther there. our disabled vehicle cleared. and you are now able to get by the downed wires along 724. that closure has been lifted but you might still wander to use 422 instead where things are looking good. are you ready for the democrats? they're coming. the convention starting over the weekend and early next week so restrictions start tonight on those ramps that connect 95 with broad street, then the weight restrictions along 95 begin midday tomorrow. if your vehicle is over 5 tons, basically a commercial vehicle, heavy commercial vehicle you can't drive 95 between the platt bridge and the vine street expressway. that's going to mean a lot of extra traffic for the next week along the vine, the schuylkill and the platt bridge. we'll talk more about the convention and the other issues, rick and alicia, in the 5 o'clock hour.
