with whatever help it needs. >> and it is under that crowd of violence that democrats are now preparing for their convention here in philadelphia. despite today's news the excitement is building. >> this is a live look right now at the stage at the wells fargo center. of course hillary clinton will accept her party's nomination here next week. between now and then the stage will be filled with dozens of speakers and the city he itself will host tens of thousands of delegates and supporters. >> we have team coverage of the count down to the dnc. chad pradelli is taking a look at security around town. reporter trish hartman is learning how convention goers plan to deal with the extreme heat we will be seeing but let's kick off our coverage with "action news" anchor brian taff live in our new studio at the wells fargo center. brian, good evening. >> reporter: hi guys. fancy new studio. thanks rick and monica. we are here at the start of the democratic national convention will history will unfold next week as hillary clinton is poised to become the first woman in american history to accept a major party presidential nomination. and right now clinton is set

to attend a rally in tampa, florida where there is heavy speculation that she could andy announce her pick for vice president. clinton is already in florida but has refused to answer all reporters' questions. she began her day in orlando with a round table conversation and then visited the memorial at the pulse nightclub where of course 49 people were gunned down in a rampage last month. she left a bouquet of roses at that site. we'll of course let you know as soon as we know had when she announces who her running mate will be whether that comes today or not. [cheers and applause] and division and finally culminated in a 75 minute speech by donald trump last night accepting the republican nomination. now trump apparently wasn't finished so he held a news conference today bouncing from topic to topic including the convention's most controversial speech by far delivered by ted cruz. >> don't wander his endorse.

if he gives it i will not accept it. if he giver it i will not accept it. won't matter. honestly he should have done it because nobody cares. >> trump also thanked his supporters and took time to praise his speech last night. he said the reason the speech was so long the longest in convention history by a nominee is because there was so much applause. as you heard at the start our newscast this evening another mass shooting is unfolding right now in germany, one of so many that have taken place over the last several months here and around the world. one more reason police in philadelphia are spending final moments leading up to the convention firming up their security plan. "action news" reporter chad pradelli joins us live from fdr park in south philadelphia where many of the protestors are expected to converge safety is priority number one, chad. >> reporter: yeah, brian, fdr park is also going to be called protest park.

you can see some of the emergency services apparatus already in place. there's a philadelphia fire department emergency medical services special event response team truck. over here you have a first aid station. it's air conditioned. there are cots inside i'm told by the city there will be misting stations and water provided for the thousands of protestors expected. fencing surrounds fdr park a heavy police presence is visible at city hall and thomas paine plaza. security is already tightening around philadelphia. thousands are expected to protest next week but city officials believe problems will be minimal. >> first amendment is the first amendment 'cause it was the most important amendment for them because it came first and this is the city that celebrates that and we're going to keep everybody safe, everybody happy and we're going to have a good time. >> reporter: behind the scenes preparations have been under way for months. the dnc has received more than $40 million in federal funds for security. jack dui marcio is the

security expert and former under secretary for homeland security. >> biggest thing i worry about in any of these types of events is the lone wolf, the individual that wants to make a statement who completely goes below the radar screen. >> reporter: there are no known threats to the convention. he says upwards of 100 law enforcement agencies have been planning for the event. they plan for the worst even creating teams to think like an attacker or disrupter. he calls the national security event a massive coordination. >> it's a full court press and it's going to be a full court press until the last delegate or the presidential nominee leaves town and this thing is closed down. >> reporter: and the city is used to securing major events. the rnc came here in 2000 and you had the papal visit. the message remains the same, if you see something, say something. i'm live in south philadelphia, chad pradelli channel6 "action news.

>> all right, critically important that everyone is vigilant. chad thank you so much. things could get heated next week in more ways than one. we're talking temperatures in the upper 90's over the last several days or rather in the next several days. could feel higher than 100 when you factor in the heat index. "action news" reporter trish hartman now on the art museum steps with more on that part of this story. hi, trish. >> reporter: hi, brian, we will people will soon start to pour into philadelphia either for the convention itself or the many convention related attractions spread about town and as those temperatures continues to rise, the city wants to make sure everyone stays safe whether they're attending the convention protesting or working. hundreds of bottles of water are loaded into salvation army vehicles at a facility on north broad street as the temperatures continue to rise dozens of volunteers will be tasked with keeping first responders safe during the dnc. >> today is a big push day where we're just kind of setting the table for the long week ahead.

>> reporter: disaster services coordinator bob meyer says hydration was always part of their job for the dnc but with extreme temperatures in the forecast, they're stepping up their game. >> we're really targeting first responder personnel and support staff that are working sort of like those long days out on the perimeter and staging areas standing on asphalt all day long. >> reporter: that includes police. we found these police officers in need of extra water this afternoon as they patrolled the area of the wells fargo center. over the next few days meyer says his crews will be mobilizing. >> association really designed for functionality. >> reporter: at least one of these canteen trucks will be stationed at the wells fargo center to keep police and other workers fed and hydrated. the food and water was purchased by the city but the manpower will come from the salvation army which will also help stock medical stations for protestors at fdr park. mayor jim kinney says the city has a plan to make sure everyone stays safe. >> we are taking great efforts to make sure the people who

are expressing their first amendment rights are comfortable and have misting tents and medical facilities and medic units on stand by. >> reporter: and they also say extra pallets of water will be dropped off each day to demonstration areas the don't have access to drinking water. reporting live to center city, trish hartman channel6 "action news." brian. >> thank you so much trish. just one of so many story lines we'll be following right here inside the wells fargo center over the next several days. the epicenter of the political world and they have done i must say a fabulous job. monica we'll send things back to you in the studio. >> thank you brian. as trish mentioned next week's weather though will be no friend to the thousands of delegates protestors and police who will spend time outside during the convention. let's get a look at how bad it could be. meteorologist melissa magee at the big board with our first

check of the accuweather forecast. >> things are heating up also a we le head into the weekend. feels like 98 in philadelphia when you factor in the feels like temperature. feels like 98 at the coast in cape may. as we led into saturday and sunday, we've got an excessive heat warning posted for the i-95 metro area. we've got a watch posted north and west an advisory for areas in lakehurst for ocean county all the way down to cape may counties on westward into dover delaware. this will be extended as you can see also into monday as well so something to keep in mind. it's hot over the weekend but even as we fast forward just in time for the start of the dnc. no relief in sight. saturday's high 98. sunday 95. 99 with the peak of the heat coming on monday. 95 on tuesday. same thing as we get into next wednesday, it's been awhile since we've seen numbers this hot. in fact it's been four years since temperatures climbed up to 99 degrees. we've got the heat.

get home and get that weekend started matt. >> and they're trying to get to the shore and we sure are seeing traffic for those trying to head down the shore on this friday afternoon rick and monica. here on 95 northbound -- by the way this is the ramp northbound off ramp to broad street that will close later this evening and remain closed throughout the week. the southbound off ramp to broad street is going to be closed most of next week but will open during some of the morning hours so that people can get to work at the navy yard and our weight restrictions along 95 go into effect midday tomorrow. any vehicle over 5 tons won't be able to drive 95 between the exit for the platt bridge and the vine street expressway. so that's your big rigs, that's your dump trucks, your buses. all of them will be forced onto the vine the schuylkill and the platt bridge putting extra traffic on all of those roads. speaking of the schuylkill the eastbound ramp to packer avenue is going to be closed afternoon and evenings pretty much all of next week. even if you did exit you wouldn't be able to head south side on broad street. that closes starting tomorrow between packer and terminal

>> two days of competitive swimming continue in wilmington delaware. jcc hosting the north brandywine swim league invitational championship. the competition runs through 10 o'clock tonight and tomorrow. the sharks team will host this event for the next three years. good luck. >> that is the idea. get in the pool and -- does meteorologist melissa magee have a pool. >> no but i will say you will need to seek out the pool closest to you over the neck net several days. temperature will be quite hot. it's the oppressive humidity on the way. sky6 live in hd looking at the center city skyline. you can kind of see the haze overhead. the hazy conditions the humidity and a lot of hot air as well. dewpoint numbers right now are in the 60's and 70's and we will stay this way for a good portion of our weekend into next week. we've got a dewpoint number in philadelphia of 70 degrees so you could feel the oppressive air overhead and unfortunately very little change as we head

into the weekend which is why those warnings, the watches and the advisories are up. current heat index in philadelphia, 98 degrees, allentown 96, feels like 93 in cape may, 98 in dover. current heat index in atlantic city at the airport coming in at 95 degrees. here's satellite6 along with action radar. you can see we've got a partly cloudy sky across the region. there is a frontal boundary that's drifting off to our south and east. i think the best bet to find any activity will be well north of our region tonight and really north of that 95 corridor. so, over the next 12 hours it's certainly feeling tropical. we've got an isolated shower or thunderstorm again well north of the city. we'll drop down to 70 only in the suburbs and 77 in philadelphia for the overnight low with that southwesterly to westerly wind that moves in across the region. so, this is what it looks like tomorrow as you start your weekend. hot and muggy with a westerly wind so with the west wind not much relief at the coast. the high in cape may 91. at the boardwalk tomorrow 94 degrees so no sea breeze. you get the wind coming off the land it certainly heats

things up. 98 the high tomorrow in philadelphia and 95 in lancaster. so, this is wait looks like as we go throughout the day tomorrow. the heat index tracker you can see the peak hours for heat any time between noon and right through 4:00 p.m. where it will feel like we are in the triple digits and it looks like this is just the beginning. on sunday we're calling for a high of 95. close to a record of 98 set back in 2011 but on monday, we could hit 99 degrees is your passing the old record of 96 set back in 1899 so this is definitely a weekend to watch even into early next week. if we hit 99 it will be the hottest in about four years so hot and sultry saturday, a high of 98. hot and less humid zone but that heat sticks around and at 95 for the start of the dnc we're watching those records with thunderstorms likely, 99. blazing sunshine on tuesday, 95 the middle 90's roll on as we get into wednesday. we'll let you know when the relief is coming, if any. details coming up at 5:30.

least eight people are dead and several others wounded in what authorities describe as a possible terror attack in a mall. police say they found a ninth body but believe it may be one of the attackers. witnesses say they opened fire at a mcdonald's next to a popular shopping mall there. it's feared the suspects may have fled into the subway. police shut it down. police have ordered everyone in that area to get off the streets and to shelter-in-place. the u.s. state department has issued a warning to all americans in the city to also stay indoors and to monitor television reports. this is the sector attack in at- second attack in germany in less than a week. president obama is pledging to provide germany any help it needs. hillary clinton tweeted his message a short time ago. it says "monitoring the horrific situation in munich. we stand with our friends in germany as they work to bring those responsible to justice

h. >> the presumptive democratic nominee for president is in florida her several tonight. she is expected to announce her vice presidential running mate perhaps later today or even tomorrow and from there she'll head here to philadelphia for the democratic national convention. >> that's right. after years of planning months of construction and strategizing, the city is ready to welcome the delegates politicians and the entire world for the historic event. >> and you are taking a live look inside the wells fargo center site of the democratic national convention. we got our first peek inside this morning. this venue will hold some of the biggest names in politics as well as celebrities and notable figures. >> for a closer look at what went into this massive undertaking let's head to the floor of the wells fargo center and check in with john rawlins tonight. >> hi john. >> reporter: hi. our vantage point here is just remarkable. this is its channel6 vantage point for the to -- down here is the floor. right over there is the podium. they have been testing a sound system here that literally

rocks this building. add in a cast of thousands that we'll have come monday and yes, it's going to be very loud here at the wells fargo center. stage hands pulling up net bags today each with about 1500 balloons to the top of the wells fargo center. but before those balloons are lifted, a security check by a k-9 team. political life in the 21st century. each bag of balloons tied together with something called a trigger line. >> one line like a master line that's going to one end of the catwalk and then once it is it that you'll pull one and it will pull all of them out at the same time. >> reporter: all those balloons come tumbling down. >> all of them. >> reporter: earlier today the dnc unveiled its giant stage and video wall part of it behind the podium has large three sided rotation units called periaktos that spin that allows to us change the look of the stage from moment to moment speaker to speaker. >> reporter: while the stage is ready there was still plenty he to do.

>> greetings from the delegates from delaware the first state. >> reporter: there were delegate sound checks and camera checks. 500 workers have labored for weeks to convert a sporting arena into this political backdrop. the cost of setting it up and tearing it down estimated by the dnc at 35 million to $55 million. the mayor says when it's over thursday night hillary clinton will be the first female nominee for president of a major political party and it's fitting there it should be in philadelphia. >> this is the city of firsts, first in democracy first in libraries, fire departments, i mean we he go on and on and this will be the first here and it's wonderful. she certainly is deserving. she certainly is qualified. >> reporter: so you had another first for philadelphia. it took the dn c4 to five weeks to construct everything you see here plus the vip rooms and the meeting rooms that you don't see here. the plan is now to rip it all out, tear it out in 19 days working around the clock in

area for surveillance cameras. no one was injured in this crash along the northeast extension of the pennsylvania turnpike this morning but it did cause some traffic tieups. chopper6 was over the scene in the southbound lanes near the lansdale exit. you can see the crash involved a yellow car a white pickup truck and another vehicle. still not clear though what led up to the collision. >> time right now for a check of the traffic scene friday night. >> back to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center with that update. how is shore traffic looking tonight. >> we're seeing plenty of it as we look live here rick and monica, along 42, the delays start back on the pennsylvania side of the river on the schuylkill eastbound to 95 northbound, then the traffic continues to crawl across the walt whitman bridge onto 42 southbound. this is the crowd head heed down towards college drive. that's where the delay starts to break up as you head toward the a.c. expressway. from 42 to 422 there was an accident eastbound approaching royersford. still jammed there as you come away from the outlets. in fairmount park a crash on kelly drive at strawberry

"action news" reporter annie mccormick shows us. >> go hillary. go dnc. democrats. >> reporter: the builder's challenge happens to coincide with the democratic national convention but the carpenters union is also using it as an opportunity to volunteer and give the dnc support. today and tomorrow they'll brave the heat wearing their fluorescent dnc shirts. habitat for humanity philadelphia is gate full for the skilled laborly they started at 6 o'clock this morning and they expect to have all of the framing done in just two days. >> they will complete from the first floor decking all the way up to the roof on top of these four homes here at diamond park. >> every year we're involved
