mate virginia senator tim kaine and on to philadelphia where clinton will accept the democratic nomination and be the first woman with top billing on a major party ticket, the excitement is moving to the start of the democraic national convention in just two days the delegates will pack the wells fargo center for a history making four days. we have team coverage but we begin with abc's karen travis with more on hillary clinton's pick for vp. >> reporter: fired up crowd of 5,000 waving the fresh off the press clinton signs. hillary clinton and tim kaine in their first joint appearance as running mates. >> make no mistake behind that smile tim also has a backbone of steel, just ask the nra. [cheers] and wasting no time slamming donald trump. >> do you want a you're fired president or a you're hired president? >> reporter: trump firing back tweeti tweeting crooked hillary and i.s.i.s. is drooling and do not look presidential to me. with the convention kicking off on monday embarrassing and wikileaks elising e-mails that seem to be efforts to stop the rise of bernie sanders, sanders supporters are angry, campaign manager telling abc it's a clear example of the dnc taking sides and that somebody has to be held accountable. but for the clinton campaign today was all about strategy and announcing her running mate from virginia in florida. the clinton campaign believes if they win those two states they will win the white house. karen traverse, abc news

philadelphia. this is the stage where clinton will formally become the democratic nominee for president and make history as the first female candidate leading the ticket for a major party, last-minute prep rayes preparations and they did a thorough sweep of that building. last-minute preparations taking place for the convention all throughout the weekend, road restrictions are in place and starting tomorrow crews will start towing cars from south broad street. heads up. tonight though one of the first of many parties took place in citizens bank part, philadelphia officials and even mascots greeted journalists from all across the country and had a chance to sample the local fair and get a close up view of the ballpark, much more ahead from the celebration coming up, at 11:30. and back to those traffic restrictions they have now started taking effect on i-95 for dnc security purposes and last night crews blocked off the

highway ramps to and from broad street and starting at noon commercial vehicles over five tons and heavy trucks ban from nine mile stretch from exit 13 near the airport to exit 22 the vine street expressway and local traffic is also blocked all around the sports complex. the pico building in center city welcoming the dnc with a slight show, at the top of the hour it will display sights and images that celebrate united states history, that light show began tonight about will continue until midnight on friday. and take a look at this, boat house road in fair montpark is decked out for the dnc crews installed red, white and blue lights reflecting across the river and they will do so each night. on friday night the lights will return to iconic white but for now patriotic in red, white and blue. dnc gathered at the convention center to advocate for an end to

the super delegate system but the effort failed and formally delivered a petition of more than 600,000 signatures this morning. this afternoon during a hearing this amendment was defeated but it did win support to force a floor vote at the convention next week. some abortion rights opponents held a rally this morning in the section in opposition of hillary clinton. the group gathered outside of a closed abortion facility on the 3800 block of lancaster avenue and held signs and said that it is immoral for catholics to vote for clinton. and this mock tug of war took place outside of hillary clinton center headquarters and these protesters are calling on clinton to ensure that medications are more affordable and more accessible. one side in this tug of war represents pharmaceutical companies and the other rents patients and this is from

office and firefighters from a sister station are also here to offer a salute to the fallen firefighter as his body is brought by. now we are told the firefighter responded to a call earlier today and returned to the fire house on the 1300 of west cambri less than a mile from here in philadelphia, at some point fellow firefighters found him unresponsive in the gym in the basement, he was brought here where he was pronounced dead earlier this evening. now, police say the motorcade will travel down broad street to 676 then on to i-76 to the medical examiner's office and the circumstances surrounding lee's death and officials have not said how he died. they did say in a news release more information will be released as the investigation draws to a close. once again a firefighter dead today in a fire house, his name

is gabrielle lee and told he is in his 40s and worked for ladder company 12 in north philadelphia. we are live at temple university hospital 6abc action news. excessive heat warning in effect through monday and today strong storms rumbled through but didn't cool things off or not enough and we are live at the big board with details and it's going to be a scorcher. >> a lot of heat and humidity across the region and did fuel the strong showers and storm and six double scan radar looking different than earlier, a frontal boundary dipping on off to our south and east but as the showers and storms moved on through they did produce a lot of damage and wilmington and delaware tree limbs down and trees and wires down auto bone nevada and lancaster and lancaster county quarter size hail reported and logan township

large winds and the showers of heat and humidity and 70 dew point in philadelphia and you can feel the moisture and oppressive in dover and upper 60s north and west of town in reddening. looking at the heat index in the region 83 philadelphia, 76 dover and 82 allentown and 82 trenton and no relief in sight as we press forward here. the high in philadelphia 97 degrees. tomorrow we are calling for a high of 96. but the core of the heat and the peak of the heat comes on monday with a high of 99 for the start of the dnc and looks like into early next week numbers will hold in the lower 90s, looking at the forecast alisha and let you know when relief is coming and what you need to do to stay safe with heat like this, details coming out with the accuweather seven day. the storms this afternoon caused this tree to come

a community came out this evening to thank the men and women who keep them safe citizens for liberty hosted the second blue lives matter in morristown and provided the officers working in the townships with sandwiches and homemade baked goods and also given a wrist band that read blue lives matter. a baton rouge deputy among three officers shot and killed last weekend was laid to rest today.

all 1500 seats were filled in the church where the funeral was head for brad garfola and they remembered him as a friend and man who can always be counted out to help those in need and brother in law said he was working off duty at a convenience store and heard shots and went out to help the fellow officers and was killed. no ties to terror in yesterday's deadly attack in germany that left ten people dead including the gunman. investigators now say the 18-year-old shooter was simply obsessed with school shootings, the violence broke out yesterday at a mcdonald's near a popular mall in munich, the gunman opened fire killing nine people before then taking his own life. investigators say that it appears he posted a message on facebook designed to lure young people to that shopping center. officials in afghanistan have issued a ban on all public gatherings for the next ten days

a good day to be at the beach too. >> that is for sure, anything you can do alisha to relieve yourself of the heat and humidity, unfortunately it's not leaving the region any time soon and a double scan radar and you can see it's dry, no issue with precipitation and earlier today we had very strong showers and storms and produced damage across the region. we are calm tonight. show you the picture outside. the action cam was outside earlier this evening after the storms moved on out, you could see we have a partly cloudy sky and we will start to clear out overnight tonight across the region. currently in philadelphia coming in at 80 after a high today of 97 degrees, 82 allentown, 72 in the poconos, 76 cape may and high dew point numbers for the city, 95 corridor to the south and east and in the 40s and only the 50s in allentown that is an indication of a wind change across our region and you will notice a bit of a difference

through the day tomorrow, satellite six with action radar and the cold front that moves on through, not a lot of cold air behind the cold front but i mentioned the wind shift out of the south or southwest direction and tomorrow they are more northwesterly and you tap into a drier wind however the heat will roll on and won't feel as bad tomorrow as it was today. record watching though on the way, sunday a high of 96. the record 98 setback in 2011 and on monday a high temperature of 99 degrees, we could break the record of 96 setback way in 1899 here in philadelphia. something to keep in mind because this will be a prolonged period of heat and humidity so some heat tips over the next few days check on the elderly and the pets, make sure you stay hydrated with lots of water, take lots of breaks in the shade if perhaps you do a lot of activities outdoors where wear light weight and loose fitted clothing as well as we get in the rest of our week.
