clinton, coming to her defense when asked about the name calling from donald trump. and cecilia vega, you're here with me. the new democratic ticket being announced, but the headlines are about e-mails and bernie sanders. >> reporter: this is supposed to be about party unity. instead, this is the exact opposite. on the eve of the democratic convention, tonight, a bombshell. party chairwoman debbie wasserman shultz resigning after wikileaks released thousands of internal democratic national committee e-mails suggesting the party favored clinton over bernie sanders. an 11th-hour effort to blunt the controversy hanging over clinton's convention, and upstaging the announcement of her running mate, virginia senator tim kaine. >> senator tim kaine is everything donald trump and mike pence are not. >> reporter: fresh off their big debut, clinton's words of encouragement picked up by the microphones.

>> go get them! >> this is great. all right. >> reporter: unlike donald trump, who spoke for 28 minutes before introducing his running mate -- >> back to mike pence. >> reporter: -- then walking offstage. clinton made kaine the star of her show. he spoke 38 minutes to her 17. >> hillary clinton, she doesn't insult people. she listens to them. what a novel concept, right? >> reporter: now, their first joint interview, with kaine's new role as trump attack dog on full display. clinton asked what she calls trump, since he calls her crooked hillary. >> i don't call him anything. and i'm not going to engage in that kind of insult fest that he seems to thrive on. >> i don't want to -- she's done a good job of letting the, you know, water go off her back on this. that's not the way i feel. when i see this, you know, crooked hillary, or i see the "lock her up," it's just ridiculous. and look, most of us stopped the

name-calling thing about fifth grade. >> reporter: they may be presenting a united front, but now it's democratic unity that's under threat. those hacked dnc e-mails enraging sanders supporters. in one e-mail, a top dnc staffer wonders about sanders -- "does he believe in a god. he had skated on saying he has a jewish heritage. i think i read he is an atheist. this could make several points' difference." sanders called for wasserman schultz to step down. but he didn't back away from his support of clinton. >> we have got to defeat trump. we have to elect hillary clinton. >> bernie sanders says he'll be here to help hillary clinton. cecilia vega back with us now. you've been working your sources on the tim kaine choice. >> reporter: this is about winning white, male, and independent voters. and also about giving hillary clinton a boost in the all-important swing state of virginia. and i'm told this also came down to chemistry, you saw them on the stage, they certainly have that.

>> cecilia, thank you. the hacked dnc e-mails revealing what democratic party leaders were saying about bernie sanders. tonight, the clinton camp with an eye-opening theory about who's behind the the leak. the clinton campaign manager saying it's the russians trying to donald trump. jonathan karl, did he really say that? >> he did. this is a huge allegation, david. this would make the watergate scandal look minor by comparison. about a month ago, the dnc computers were hacked by computers believed to be in russia. but the clinton campaign presented no evidence that the computers were tied to the russian government. they attribute it to experts. >> do we know if there was any pressure from the clinton camp for congressman wasserman schultz to resign? to sort of make sure we were talking about this on sunday night, and not monday, tuesday, wednesday, during the

convention? >> make no mistake, she was pushed out. the clinton campaign wanted to be done, turn the page. it also took a call from president obama to finally get her going. she is going to gavel in the convention, she is going to be here, and i'm sure the bernie sanders supporters will be booing her quite loudly. >> a much smaller role. thank you, jon. in the meantime, the trump campaign already reacting, saying hillary clinton should follow wasserman schultz's lead, due to clinton's own e-mail scandal. but donald trump himself is also responding to something else tonight. to those who say his convention speech was too dark. and four days after ted cruz was booed off the stage, donald trump is still talking about tez cruz. tom llamas on the campaign trail tonight. >> reporter: tonight, on the eve of the democratic convention, donald trump still bragging about his own big speech. tweeting out this video with an applause-o-meter, claiming 24 minutes of pure cheering. >> the only thing that some people said, it was a little dark.

it was a little bit tough. >> did you think it was a little dark? >> no, i thought it was very optimistic. to me, it was an optimistic speech. >> reporter: but at times trump did paint a grim picture. >> our convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. illegal immigrants with criminal records, ordered deported from our country, are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens. the attacks on our police, and the terrorism of our cities, threaten our very way of life. >> reporter: trump now also refusing to end his feud with senator ted cruz. >> stand and speak and vote your conscience. vote for candidates up and down the ticket. >> reporter: it's been four days since cruz was booed off the stage after refusing to endorse trump, as the billionaire watched from the crowd. >> i did him a favor because had i not walked into the arena at that moment, i think they would have ripped him off the stage. >> reporter: but trump's good will ends there.

he's now promising to fund a super p.a.c. to take out cruz and ohio governor john kasich, who boycotted his convention. >> yeah, i'll probably do a super p.a.c., you know, when they run, against kasich. >> okay. >> for $10 to $20 million. against ted cruz. and maybe one other person that i'm thinking about. >> reporter: it's unclear which politician trump was speaking about right there. trump will be busy this week. he's on the move, hitting several battleground states, including north carolina, florida, and ohio. david? >> tom, thank you. we will have full coverage of the democratic convention in philadelphia all week long. gavel to gavel coverage on our streaming news channel. and we turn to other news, the deadly heat and wildfires burning out of control at this hour. in los angeles, some homes already lost. hundreds of families forced to escape as the flames grow closer. the smoke reaching all the way to the city. at l.a.x., air quality alerts are already in place. phillip mena is on the fire lines for us. >> reporter: tonight, the massive wildfire raging just ten miles north of los angeles turning deadly. officials discovering a body inside the charred vehicle in this driveway. >> unfortunately that fire came through and blasted the backside of some of those homes. >> reporter: 1,500 homes evacuated. 18 now destroyed. fire sweeping down into the valleys, flames 40 feet high. >> there's a lot of devastation as you can see. around the hillsides here. >> reporter: 1,700 firefighters, even modified jumbo jets brought in to attack the blaze. choppers grabbing any available water to douse the flames. this used to be the set of many hollywood productions.

>> i ran outside and my neighbor hollered to me. he said, "there's a plane on your roof!" >> reporter: norman says he didn't even hear it coming. >> i guess if i had been another two, three feet closer, i would have been hit. >> reporter: the pilot airlifted from the wreckage but in critical condition tonight. he had just taken off from a local airport, when witnesses say the plane started struggling. one witness reported the plane barely cleared the trees after taking off from a nearby airport. tonight, the faa is investigating. david? >> adrienne, thank you. less than two weeks until the olympics, and russian athletes will be competing. despite an international investigation that found wide-ranging, state-sponsored doping. the ruling was that individual judges can decide whether or not the athletes can compete. tonight, russian officials are celebrating, because it looks like most of their team will be going to rio.

from germany tonight, the third deadly attack in a week. the frightening scene playing out near stuttgart. injuring two people, and killing a woman. some reports saying a woman killed was pregnant. and there are no indications tonight this is terrorism according to officials. that attack, just two days after the horrific killing in munich. tonight, a clearer portrait emerging of the gunman, firing directly at people outside mcdonald's. he had been planning the attack for a year. and tonight, police have now arrested another teen that may have known about the plot, and failed to report it. here's alex marquardt. >> reporter: the attacker began his deadly rampage firing his gun at a mcdonald's. a moment, we learned tonight, that had been in the works for a year. officials saying today the gunman, identified by german media as ali sonboly, detailed how he would carry out the shooting spree in a manifesto and tried to lure victims by

posting an offer of free food on a fake facebook page. they also found his copy of peter langman's "why kids kill," which studies school shootings like columbine and virginia tech. he even visited the site of a 2009 german school shooting. the prosecutor painted a picture of a disturbed 18-year-old man who was hospitalized for two months last year for depression and social anxiety. tonight, authorities arrested one of his friends suspected of knowing about the plot. seven died at that mcdonald's, and two more elsewhere. almost all of the victims were fellow teenagers. the gun the attacker used was a semiautomatic glock 17 pistol, which officials said he appeared to have bought on the black market online, and was a restored theatre prop. david? >> alex, thanks. there's still much more ahead on "world news tonight" this sunday. the security breach at the major american airport, a man with no ticket, no bags, bypassing tsa.
