we have controversy to report on the eve of the democratic national convention here in philadelphia. the final touches are put in place at the wells fargo center. the spotlight shifted to a shake up in the top ranks of the dnc. i'm walter perez. a rocky start to what was supposed to be a rousing show of party unity. late this afternoon, the chair of the democratic national committee announced she is stepping down in the wake of a scandal. let's get to sarah bloomquist to lead our coverage from the wells fargo center. big news before the convention begins. >> reporter: that's right, walter. the shake up is not the way they wanted to start this week. late this afternoon, the head of the national democratic committee, debbie wasserman-schultz announced she will resign following leaked e-mails. they suggested the dnc favored hillary clinton in the primaries. bernie sanders and supporters are applauding the move. it will lead the party to the

unity they need more than ever. >> the life of the campaign. it was more difficult by the fact they were people with their thumbs on the scale. what this demonstrates is the party is willing to move forward, start anew, listening to voters. we are going to elect hillary clinton. >> reporter: now, debbie wasserman-schultz will stay on through the convention. after that, she'll be replaced by long term democratic strategist and dnc vice chair, donna brazile. she will serve as interim chair until a permanent replacement is found. bernie sanders said debbie wasserman-schultz has made the right decision and the party was remain impartial, something which did not occur during the 2016 race. let's head to "action news" reporter, jeff chirico where a welcome party for the delegates just wrapped up. jeff, you talked to the delegates about this shake up.

promises to be. tough. >> reporter: the reverend jesse jackson gave the themes we are likely to hear. >> turn to each other, not on each other. learn the survivor part, learn to live together. >> reporter: taking a live look inside the wells fargo center, you can see the stage is set for history as hillary clinton is about to become the first woman to head the presidential ticket for a major party. as the delegates rally here inside the convention center, thousands of protesters will be making themselves heard outside the building and throughout the city of philadelphia. hillary clinton and helping donald trump. why might the russians want to help donald trump? well, we remember his statement last week, as president, he wouldn't necessarily defend a nato country under attack until that country or until he could assess that country's financial contributions to the alliance. words that maybe vladimir putin and other russian officials like to hear. this situation has assumed a different dimension and this convention hasn't even started yet. >> reporter: this is hillary's convention. bernie is still looming large, though. >> he is. he has told hillary clinton over the last number of months during the primary campaign, we know that. and we know the platform, not that the platform is necessarily cast and concrete over the months ahead, but it is important during this convention. a lot of the platform is more

bernie than hillary. today, the controversy over superdelegates seems to be going bernie sanders way. the rules committee will appoint a commission, but the final result will be that two-thirds of the superdelegates will be bound by the vote of their state conventions during caucuses and votes four years from now, primaries four years from now. that whole issue of superdelegates, two-thirds of the superdelegates will be bound to candidates, not the way they are now. >> reporter: we expect a different tone here. more star studded. thank you, jim. the convention begins tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. with the opening gavel. first lady, michelle obama is a featured speaker. tuesday, the role call vote will take place to nominate hillary clinton, officially.
