week long spiritual event. pope francis is slated to attend. those will some of the top stories for this monday, july 25th. >> from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this half hour with a massive wildfire burning outside of los angeles. a fire official now says it's raging through the santa clarita valley like a freight train. >> new video shows one of the 18 homes destroyed. among the homeowners who have lost everything is a firefight battling another blaze. he learned his home was burned to the ground. we have more from the fire lines. >> reporter: the wildfire raging ten miles north of los angeles turning deadly. officials discovering a body inside the vehicle of this driveway. >> that fire came through and blasted the backside of some homes. >> reporter: 1500 homes evacuated. 18 now destroyed.

fire sweeping down into the valleys. flames 40 feet high. >> there's a lot of devastation around the hillsides here. >> reporter: 1700 firefighters. even modified jumbo jets bought in to attack the blaze. choppers grabbing water to douse the flames. this used to be the set of many hollywood productions. firefighters are putting out the flames after it was burned to rubble. this fire just one of more than two dozen burning in ten states out west. the people living in this home able to escape with their lives. but no help for firefighters. it is hot. it is dry, and there is no sign of rain ahead. phillip mena, california. >> the firefighters are also battling high temperatures as are americans throughout the country. it'll feel like 108 degrees for any democratic national convention delegates who venture outdoors in philadelphia. >> east coast will set records today.

still slated to open and close the convention, but democrats fear she may be booed. and the leaked e-mail controversy is stealing the spotlight from the rollout of her running mate. >> she chose tim kaine to share the democratic ticket and address the crowd in fluent spanish as they appeared in miami over the weekend. they attached up for a joint interview last night on of 60 minutes and took aim at donald trump. >> we've both heard from many republicans how distressed they are at the direction that donald trump is taking their party. we know there are republicans who share our concerns, and want to be part of the solution, not just peddling fear and bigotry. >> clinton is getting an unexpected endorsement from michael boomberg, the billionaire who is now an independent. he'll speak at the convention hoping to make the case for clinton as the best choice.

politician he was speaking about. he will be busy this week hitting battle ground states including north carolina, florida and ohio. the coast guard was called in to rescue a sick cruise ship passenger. authorities say the 19-year-old passenger was experiencing severe stomach pains. she was aboard the norwegian break away. she was flown to a hospital. some russian athletes will taking part in the summer olympic games. the call was rejected to ban the entire team. instead any russian athlete who has ever had a doping violation will not be allowed into the games. they began their baseball careers in opposite ends but ended at the same place, cooperstown. >> griffey was the number one draft pick in 1987. the highest pick to ever enter the hall. piazza wasn't chosen until the

already under evacuation orders. they are battling the blaze in hot weather. and there are heat waves all across the country with excessive heat warnings greeting convention delegates in philadelphia this morning. what relief there has been in the midwest as come from severe storms. in chicago one of the storms threw a canopy onto commuter rail lines causing sparks. a driver did the recording here. that fire snarled service on several major rail lines last night. the storms knocked out power for tens of thousands. over seas, new details about a violent attack in germany. officials say he was a 27-year-old syrian who had been denied asylum in germany. 12 people were hurt when the man's bomb went off. it's not clear if he intended to kill people or was carrying out a suicide.

another man was arrested for killing a woman with a machete. it appeared to be the result of an argument. those incidents followed friday's rampage in munich. more than 1,000 people gathers last night near the scene of the shooting to light candles and place flowers. officials are revealing new information about the gunman and his past struggles with mental health. >> the attacker began his rampage firing his gun at a mcdonald's. a moment we learned had been in the works for a year. officials saying the gunman detailed how he would carry out the shooting spree in a manifesto and tried to lure victims by posting an offer of free food on a fake facebook page. they also found his copy of peter langman's why kids kill which studies school shootings. he even visited the site of a 2009 german school shooting.

the prosecutor painted the picture of a disturbed man who was hospitalized for two months last year for depression and social anxiety. authorities arrested one of his friends suspected of knowing about the plot. seven died and two more. almost all the victims were fellow teenagers. the gun the attacker used was a glock pistol. he appeared to have bought it on the black market. it was a restored theater prop. turning to business. it's the end of the road for yahoo. verizon is expected to announce it's acquiring the company. the purchase will include the e-mail service and the news finance and sports websites. yahoo at one point was valued at $1,340 million. verizon is expected to keep the brand. zblnc after weeks of riding the

michigan state punter were killed. a kicker from lsu was hurt in the accident. the men had just left a kicking clinic in wisconsin when it happened. it's believed the driver was speeding. a university of florida football player is being praised for stopping a sexual assault. he was working as a security guard at a bar when he spotted a couple in the parking lot. he said it was obvious the woman was too drunk to have given her consent and he knew it was his duty to get involved. so he and another witness stopped the attack. that suspect is now behind bars. a nightmare for frequent fliers. no internet or streaming video. on a delayed flight stuck on the tar mack. the flight attendants on one flight asked if anyone wanted to entertain the other passengers. >> as it turns out, there were a number of pageant participants on board. that resulted in this.

four four people are dead after a bus transporting staffers for the dallas cowboys collided with a van in arizona. authorities say the van was making an illegal left turn when it crashed into the bus. it was headed to a fan event. all four people inside that van were killed including two teenagers. a connecticut man has an amazing tale of survival. he was sitting at home watching tv when a small plane crashed into his home. >> he says the plane missed him by a few feet. witnesses say they noted a problem with the plane shortly after takeoff. adrienne bankert has more. >> reporter: this small plane plunging into this home in seconds. the man running to the crash scene with others to help. amazingly, that plane just missing norman hanenbom who was
