because wasserman schultz is at the center of a controversy that has kept careening out of control. >> (boos). >> all right everybody now settle down. everybody settle down, please. >> the florida congresswoman was booed at her own delegation meeting this morning that in the wake of those leaked e-mails that showed that the dnc has been biased against bernie sanders and in favor of hillary clinton during the primary campaign. sanders voters are incensed here in philadelphia and they plan to boo wasserman schultz here in the hall. the clinton campaign apparently convinced her to fall on her sword. she will resign at the end of the convention and we will not see her tonight. speaking of bernie sanders, he was supposed to address some of his delegates today at the convention center but it turned into a massive rally. rawlins is live outside the convention center tonight. john, sanders followers are angry and it really was a stunning moment when sanders said that they must elect hillary clinton. >> reporter: it was tough to take for some of them. this is a room full of true believers and they were upset as you said at the request made to them. you talked to them and they're going to describe to you the hierarchy of the democratic party as corrupt and untrustworthy and the idea of now being asked to back miss clinton just too much for some of them. >> next president of the united states, bernie sanders. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: in the packed grand ballroom bernie sanders delegates and supporters roared their approval as the vermont senator spoke emotions were evident. sanders told them how their campaign had changed the system for example cutting the number of super delegates at future conventions. he told them the departure of debbie wasserman schultz meant

new leadership possibilities for reformers. the city told them it was time to back hillary clinton because a donald trump victory would be a disaster. >> trump is a bully and a demagogue. trump -- trump has made bigotry and hatred the cornerstone of his campaign. >> reporter: sanders is now trying to support clinton message. it was not received by some there were boos and jeers by some supporters. >> we told bernie we love him and appreciate him and we do not accept him telling us to vote for hillary. he's doing it because he has to. >> reporter: but others here said it was time for the democrats to unify. >> pretty clear. while hillary clinton wasn't our first choice she's not a racist like donald trump. >> as much as it may be hard to swallow for some of us bernie has said we need to elect hillary clinton then we

need to elect hillary clinton. >> reporter: so some delegates here willing to heed the call and fall in line behind clinton but others, well, just not there yet and some of them hinting that there could be some sort of floor protest at the wells fargo center to spoil the whole image avenue unified democratic party. live at the convention center john rawlins channel6 "action news." jim. >> john, thank you. fdr park in south philadelphia has been set aside for protestors and there was something of a confrontation this afternoon between bernie sanders supporters and westboro baptist church protestors. they believe that sexuality is a sin. this is a large contingent of protestors marching down south broad street from city hall police commissioner richard ross says he's worried about protestors and the heat but is

thankful that the protests have been peaceful so far. let's take a quick look at the situation here inside wells fargo arena and perhaps you can see the philadelphia congressman bob brady is at the podium. he of course the longest serving philadelphia congressman and he is welcoming the democrats to not only this convention but also to the city of philadelphia and they are giving him a rousing round of applause. "action news" reporter sarah bloomquist is live on the floor and sarah, sanders supporters have been extraordinarily vocal here this evening and in fact, sanders has texted his supporters to calm down. >> reporter: that's right, jim. this convention off to a raucous start. we've been hearing dueling chants of hillary and bernie. the mere mention of hillary clinton or tim kaine even

receiving some boos here on the convention floor. that prompted bernie sanders to send out a message to supporters telling them that their credibility as a movement will be damaged by such behavior. we were on the floor with pennsylvania delegates when the gavel dropped just after 4 o'clock this afternoon and we talked to them about the start of this convention and about those chants for bernie. [cheers and applause] >> i didn't think it was going to be anything. she resigned as a chairperson and we're moving about with business. >> i'm just excited to be here. this is my first convention and it's a really just great feeling to see how many people are engaged in the political process and how many people are passionate about the work we have to do over the next few days. >> there's going to be a lot of them. does that concern you at all? >> it doesn't concern memorial it's just -- i think we need to do it in a way where we're not like being rude. so we can do it in a way

(applause). >> reporter: so those chants of bernie, bernie erupting here from time to time on the convention floor. bernie sanders looming large over what was supposed to be hillary clinton's convention. of course sanders will speak tonight. his job here to convince his supporters to support hillary clinton. jim, back to you in the studio upstairs. >> thank you, sarah. another member of congress from pennsylvania from philadelphia and montgomery county brendan boyle now welcoming the delegates to philadelphia. he is 39 years old and is seen as a rising star in the house of representatives. brendan boyle getting his moment on the podium right now. philadelphia mayor jim kenney, pennsylvania senator bob casey and new jersey senator cory booker are among the speakers

who will take the stage tonight and then in prime time, first lady michelle obama will address the dnc floor along with massachusetts senator elizabeth warren, then it's bernie sanders, so sanders followers may be angry and frustrated here today but they get warren and sanders tonight. it will be a big night for the liberal wing of the democratic party. and of course you can count on the entire "action news" team to bring you complete coverage of the dnc from gavel to gavel right here on channel6. plus, we will have live extended coverage on 6abc.com every night of this convention beginning at 7:30. so, cecily tynan there has been some political heat today but just as obvious has been the real heat outside. delegates, police, protestors, everybody else has been trying to cope with brutal heat again today. so let's go live to cecily

tynan. cecily, organizers can do all the planning for an event like this but you just can't plan the weather. >> you really can't and mother nature not cooperating with the dnc. look at this. a high today soared up to 96 degrees tying a record high but the heat index, the combination of the air temperature and dewpoints in the 70's soared all the way up to 109. we have not had heat and humidity like this in years and it was really across our entire viewing area. wilmington the peak heat index 108, allentown 104, wildwood 107, dover reporting a highest heat index of 114. the heat and humidity, the catalyst for severe storms now that are breaking out. we do have a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the lehigh valley and this cell that's been racing to the east at 50 miles per hour. frenchtown flemington in the path of the storm and about five minutes ago we did detect some rotation near bethlehem so brief tornado cannot be ruled out and there's another

broken line of storms moving through lansdale and trenton. this is all pushing to the southeast. we have a severe thunderstorm watch posted across our entire viewing area. i'll talk more about these storm on the way and unfortunately more heat and humidity coming up in the full accuweather forecast. jim. >> thank you, cecily. let's switch live to jeff chirico in ridley township. jeff, dozens were left to swelter in the heat today when a truck knocked out their power this morning. tell us about that. >> reporter: that's right, jim, let me show you what's happening right now. peco crews are on the scenery placing utility poles that snapped earlier today. 100 customers have been without power and air conditioning all day as temperatures climbed into the 90's. >> hottest day of the year. you figure something was going to go wrong. >> reporter: it wasn't easy for joe matlack and his neighbors to keep cool as they waited for crews to restore their power. three poles snapped after a box truck snagged a low hanging utility line on the 600 block of south avenue after 9:00 a.m.

>> we just going keep everything closed for now keep the shades down and then probably earlier this afternoon or later this afternoon, i don't know, we'll decide what we're going to do. >> due to the heat we started evacuating multiple buildings. >> reporter: a day center spent 250 special needs clients home for the day. officials opened an air conditioned shelter at the high school which allowed jennifer to power her grandmother's oxygen machine. >> got hot really fast and fire department has been great showed up on the street and asked us if we wanted to come over here so we could stay cool. >> reporter: the heat also posed a danger to emergency crews who took breaks inside an air conditioned septa bus. officials wouldn't say what caused the wires to sag but we're told a ridly township road crew was removing a fallen branch nearby. >> actual had wires come down across their bucket truck and their backhoe. they were able to get out safely. >> reporter: the driver of the box truck wasn't hurt either as utility crews worked to restore power, neighbors took precautions in this dangerous heat. >> you just don't want to get overheated. who cares about the food and stuff like that.

>> welcome back to the wells fargo center. we are more than two hours into the first session of the democratic national convention. and if you have been paying attention, this has been a dramatic day of dispute, of resignation and dissention among various members of the democratic party but i do have to say there is extraordinary energy in this hall at this point and maybe the whole dispute over the e-mails, the dnc e-mails have contributed to that.

hard to tell what impact all of this will have on this convention we will find out very likely within a couple of days. of course the convention lineup, everybody in attendance today has been enjoying a special performance with a philly flare and that includes bright young talent like bobby hill and old favorites like boyz ii men. >> ♪ [cheers and applause] >> you remember boyz ii men. today. sizzling grills talented chefs and some hungry visitors filled third and arch in olde city. the dnc host committee brought in food truck vendors and live music for a festival called united we eat. mayor jim kenney also braved the heat to welcome people to the city of philadelphia. >> let's go back to cecily tynan and accuweather. cecily, you got some stormy weather in the area. >> that's right, jim. we went from oppressive heat and humidity to severe storms popping up right now. double scan live showing most of the activity north of philadelphia but it's

beginning to sink closer so we have a severe thunderstorm warning posted for northeast philadelphia, parts of montgomery county, bucks county, camden county. this is until 6:45 and some of these storms have been producing very heavy rain. so a flash flood warning posted until 10:15 for mercer county up to about 2-inches of rain from fallen and this shows you on storm tracker life what we're talking about. it's really lighting up the turnpike right now, right over willow grove. we've had 276 lightning strikes with this and this system is really sliding to the east. so, oxford valley, fairless hills bristol levittown all in the path of the storm. not only are we looking at heavy rain and wind gusts we've also had reports of some small hail. a lot of that moved through lansdale about half an hour ago and we do have more severe weather up to the north as well. a severe thunderstorm warning posted for parts of bucks county, lehigh valley you have been getting hit very hard with wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour and you can see how

really the height of it has been crossing 611 right now. it's right over milford and we have had reports of some tree damage up there. all of this really after a day of oppressive heat and humidity and a lot of records at least tide. philadelphia, allentown, wilmington tying the record high 96 in philadelphia, reding a new record high of 97. the old record 96 set back in 1999 but we have dewpoints in the 70's so the current heat index makes it feel like 106 in philadelphia, feels like 111 in dover and unfortunately these storms are not going to put much of a dent in the heat and humidity. satellite6 along with action radar showing that main band working through central pennsylvania right now. that's with a cold front. but it's more of a dewpoint front. it's just going to be as hot tomorrow but the humidity levels little bit lighter. by 8 o'clock, a lot of the storms pushing along the coast and by midnight could have a few lingering storms but the main line will be out of here

and then behind this system it's hot again tomorrow. 95 in philadelphia. allentown 94. millville 94. cape may not as intense, 88. the heat index instead of above 100, 95 to 100 so feels dangerously hot but not quite as oppressive as today. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, tomorrow will be day five of our heat wave. still humid but again not as humid as today. on wednesday 95 degrees again. on thursday some evening thunderstorms, 95 and then friday some thunderstorms likely in the morning. then some sunshine. temperatures not as intense with a high of 90. looks like the heat wave will finally be gone by the weekend. back into the 80's on saturday. 88 degrees sunday partly sunny 88, monday we dry things out a possibilities of thunderstorms over the weekend with a high of 88 degrees. so, more stormy weather tonight and the heat and the humidity will continue right to the end of the week so take it easy. jim. >> cecily, thank you. going to come down here at
