revealing it is torn. some still feeling the bern. one able to bring that together while indirectly taking on donald trump. one first lady making the case for another, uniting the arena in a standing ovation on a convention day one that was off to a fractured start. bernie sanders supporters cheering for three minutes before he could speak. >> our revolution continues. >> reporter: his followers not all falling in line with his final message. >> hillary clinton will make an outstanding president and i am proud to stand with her tonight. while donald trump is busy insulting one group after another, hillary clinton understands that our diversity is one of our greatest

strengths. >> reporter: this coming as leaked dnc e-mails revealed apparent attempts to undermine sanders' primary campaign forcing the party chair to resign and early pro-bernie anger spilling out on to the streets of philadelphia. senator warren trying to rally the troops around hillary clinton. >> when we turn on each other, we can't unite to fight back against a rigged system. >> reporter: in the end it was michelle obama hailed for uniting the crowd in a speech taking on donald trump without mentioning his name while talking up clinton. >> someone who understands that the issues a president faces are not black and white and cannot be boiled down to 140 characters. >> reporter: getting emotional about her time in the white house. >> i wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. and i watch my daughters, two

beautiful intelligent black young women playing with their dogs on the white house lawn. >> reporter: emotional moment and michelle obama referencing those 140 characters, well, overnight donald trump launching into a twitter tirade taking on sanders and warren and clinton and today day two of the convention we'll hear from a former president who can say i'm with her quite literally, bill clinton. kendis and diane. >> lauren, there was another moment last night that had a lot of people talking, comedian sarah silverman seemed to have some tough love for her fellow sanders supporters. >> can i just say to the bernie or bust people, you're being ridiculous. >> what led up to that moment and how was it received in the arena? >> reporter: well, sarah silverman a comedian backed sanders during the primaries over clinton. now she was saying this in her speech when she was calling for unity saying part of the movement that the sanders

campaign inspired is now making sure that clinton gets elected. you know, this came at a portion of the convention yesterday where any mention of hillary clinton or many mentions of hillary clinton were drawing boos, so that was the context that she was kind of telling sanders supporters to get in line now that we're heading into a general election. >> yeah, clinton's name booed even during the opening prayer. so you understood that would have been a dangerous word but it was quite a funny moment there. >> all right, abc's lauren lyster, lauren, thank you so much. we love checking in with you and appreciate the update. after bernie sanders' speech a spat between sanders and donald trump received over 100,000 retweets. >> trump said bernie sanders totally sold out to clinton and bernie said never tweet. president obama also took to twitter, of course, praising the first lady's speech saying incredible speech by an incredible woman.

couldn't be more proud and our country has been blessed to have her as flotus. i love you, michelle. >> the fbi is now investigating and authorities in the u.s. say russian hackers are the ones responsible. abc's chief investigative correspondent brian ross has the latest. >> reporter: u.s. law enforcement officials tell abc news it was almost certainly the russians who lacked into the democratic party computers. the hackers malware bug operated inside their computers for at least a year undetected. >> i'm very confident that the malware that we looked at were russian actors. >> investigators dissected the hacker's computer code and found clear evidence pointing to russia including the use of a russian alphabet keyboard. >> the time zones that it was compiled in, the language that the keyboards were set to. this absolutely was not an amateur operation. ♪ >> reporter: and the timing as democrats arrived in philadelphia was clearly no accident either.

brian ross, abc news, philadelphia. >> and donald trump has been using the e-mail controversy to criticize hillary clinton. at a rally in virginia yesterday trump accused clinton of being disloyal to outgoing democratic national chair debbie wasserman schultz. >> well trump claimed clinton threw wasserman under the bus after getting her help during the primaries. >> she worked very, very hard to rig the system. little did she know that china, russia, one of our many, many friends, came in and hacked the hell out of us. can you imagine? can you imagine what they're hacking? >> that said last night in north carolina trump dismissed suggestions that russia may be trying to influence the election in his favor. he said that's because of his relatively friendly approach to russian president vladimir putin. and a new election forecast puts donald trump ahead of hillary clinton in the general election. >> according to the website

fivethirtyeight. if it were held today trump would beat hillary clinton with 53.8% of the votes. you can count on the abc news political team to cover all the big moments and catch our special report at 10:00 p.m. when bill clinton speaks about his wife. >> the other big story, the record heat and raging wildfires in california. this morning most of the 20,000 evacua evacuees are returning to their home, the sand fire only 10% contained and destroyed more than 35,000 acres and 18,000 homes. one longtime resident says this is the worst fire he's ever seen. meanwhile, in the eastern u.s., there's an enduring heat wave with record temperatures. all three washington airports recorded 100 degrees and in philadelphia protesters outside the democratic convention experienced a heat index of 107. temperatures in the east are expected to stay quite high

through thursday although there will be some relief heading into the weekend but then temperatures may soar in the pacific northwest. well, still ahead, celebrities get personal at the convention in philadelphia. and developing overnight a stabbing rampage is being called japan's worst mass killing in decades. we have the details coming in. plus, a boat brawl. two people throwing fists on the water putting other boaters in danger.

police in japan are apologizing for not acting on warning signs ahead of a deadly attack on a home for the handicapped and say a man who used to work at the facility

entered through a broken window and started stabbing people. at least 19 people were killed making it one of japan's worst mass killings since world war ii. the suspect turned himself in two hours later. there were reports he was upset about being fired in february. months before that he had sent his attack plan in a letter to japanese lawmakers. to louisiana now where one of the baton rouge police officers gunned down earlier this month has been laid to rest. montrell jackson was remembered as a family man and devoted officer who took pride in his job. his tearful wife told those who gathered that the city must come together to overcome hate so no one else will have to experience the pain that she is feeling. gas prices are at their lowest levels since april. national average of $2.16 a gallon, more than a third of the gas stations in the u.s. are write now below $2 and the national average will be down there by the election, experts say. history made overnight.

>> all right. and then there was this moment, first lady michelle obama revving up the crowd with a powerful speech and took several swipes at donald trump saying, quoting here, don't let anyone ever tell you this country isn't great. over in ft. myers, florida, three people have been detained in connection with a series of shootings outside a nightclub. the club was hosting a pool party for teenagers when witnesses say at least two gunmen opened fire. two teens were killed. nearly 20 others injured. authorities still don't have a motive but they have said that the shootings were not an act of terrorism. and despite all the heat warnings for the past several days people are still leaving children in hot cars. four more kids have died since last friday for a total of nearly two dozen this year. that's about twice as many as there were at this point last year. studies find that more than half of these deaths occur because the driver forgot the child was in the car. some boaters are facing serious consequences after an ugly scene on the water. a couple of guys on board that
