minutes of applause when he walked out onto that stage but a lot of his supporters still not convinced that hillary is the one. a lot of anger still out there so democrats are working hard behind the scenes today to quiet any protests. >> we, of course, will have much more on that. first we want to get to the breaking news overseas. a deadly attack at a french church. two men taking hostages killing a priest before they were taken down. abc's lama hasan has the latest. good morning, lama. >> reporter: and good morning to you, robin. yeah, dramatic developments unfolding. here's what we know, two men armed with knives entered a church near rrouen taking five people hostage among them a priest and two nuns. police confirming to us the attackers killed a priest and critically injured another hostage. police rushed to the scene, reports of shots ringing out before the incident ended. with the two attackers killed, there is no claim of

responsibility and no motive yet. but the paris prosecutor's office has opened a terrorism investigation. the french president and interior minister are now at the scene of the attack. robin, george. >> heartbreaking. >> we'll move on to last night's drama at the democratic national convention. first lady michelle obama as we said wowed the crowd with her takedown of donald trump. then it was bernie sanders' turn to try to rally his angry supporters behind hillary clinton. cecilia vega was on the noor for all of it and joins us now. >> reporter: you know it. what a scene it was in here. bernie sanders bernie tried to pass the baton vowing to do whatever it takes to help her win but from many he faced open rebellion. >> reporter: the man at the center of a political revolution got a three-minute standing ovation. >> thank you. >> reporter: but overnight sanders' battle cry for hillary clinton -- >> hillary clinton must become the next president of the united

beautiful, intelligent black young women, playing with their dogs on the white house lawn. and because of hillary clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the united states. >> reporter: you could hear it there, those cheers were just deafening. we're told michelle obama was heavily involved in writing and editing that speech and also know the speech writer behind those words is the same person who wrote that speech that was borrowed by melania trump during last week's republican convention. i can tell you in here that moment when michelle obama was on that stage was that one moment that had prolonged, sustained unity in this convention hall last night. it was really amazing to be here in for that. >> that's right, cecilia. thank you. now to that bombshell e-mail hacking scandal targeting the dnc. the fbi investigating accusat n

accusations that vladimir putin and the russians were trying to sway the election. abc's brian ross is here right now, has all the latest. good morning, brian. >> good morning, robin. in what is being described as a rapidly expanding fbi investigation, u.s. law enforcement offs tell abc news the hack was almost certainly a russian intelligence operation designed to affect the american election. democratic party officials say the hackers' malware bug operated inside their computers for at least a year undetected. >> i'm very confident that the malware that we looked at were russian actors. >> reporter: investigators dissected the computer's code and said they found clear evidence pointing to russia including the use of a russian alphabet keyboard. >> the time zones that it was compiled in, the language that the keyboards were set to, this absolutely was not an amateur operation. ♪ >> reporter: and the timing as democrats arrived in philadelphia was clearly no accident either. one of the leaked e-mails reveals how supposedly neutral

dnc staffers considered planting stories that bernie sanders was an atheist. another that his campaign was a mess. >> there's got to be an effort to undermine the democratic party and try to undermine hillary clinton. >> reporter: democrats see a russia conspiracy by vladimir putin to help donald trump, something his campaign manager strongly denied to george on "this week." >> are there any ties between mr. trump, you or your campaign and putin and his regime? >> no, there are not. it's absurd and, you know, no basis to it. [ speaking a foreign language ] >> reporter: but putin has frequently praised trump as bright and talented and trump returns the favor. >> i think i'd get along very well with vladimir putin. i just think so. people say, what do you mean? i think i had a get along well with him. >> reporter: in his business dealings trump and his children regularly sought investments in projects an the world from russian billionaires and millionaires. >> thank you to -- >> reporter: including one who served as the host of trump

during the miss universe contest three years ago. democratic party officials say there are many, many more e-mails including some possibly from the clinton foundation that they know were stolen and have yet to be made and fear it will come during the course of the campaign. >> let's talk to robby mook. how about that concern there are more e-mails to come, maybe even some as some sources said from hillary clinton's personal server, some of those 33,000 e-mails she deleted? >> well, george, obviously this is a concerning situation. it's a concern that an aggressive regime like vladimir putin's could be trying to not just infiltrate the e-mail system of the democratic party but actually influence the outcome of the election. i think it's also very troubling that we heard donald trump not just praise vladimir putin, but

at their convention they removed aid for the ukraine, from their platform and we heard donald trump talk about how he would not necessarily defend our eastern european nato allies from russian aggression. >> how about last night and talk about the convention. you saw michelle obama certainly unify the crowd there but over the course of the night and day we still saw so much anger among bernie sanders and his supporters. are you concerned you'll see more today? >> well, george, it was a boisterous evening. i will definitely say that. but the contrast between our convention and the republicans could not be greater. you saw bernie sanders who had endorsed weeks before come out on the floor, give a rousing endorsement of secretary clinton again when ted cruz spoke at prime time at the republican convention, he didn't even endorse donald trump. the governor of ohio didn't even

show up. supporters of senator sanders spoke frequently throughout the evening. they endorsed secretary clinton, as well. the platform passed by acclimation, so the business of the party got done by acclimation and we're looking forward to the roll call vote this evening. >> you saw sarah silverman tell bernie or bust crowd they're being ridiculous. is she right? >> well, i think what senator sanders talked about is the choice in this election is now before us and that is a choice between hillary clinton and donald trump. hillary wants to earn the vote of everyone. she -- and she's working hard to earn everyone's vote and we are working hard to unify this party. you saw that unification in action last night and we look forward to building on that this evening. >> you know, you talk about the choice between hillary clinton and donald trump. how concerned are you by the fact that in the polls coming out after the republican convention, hillary clinton's unfavorables are now actually

higher than donald trump's? >> well, george, part of what we're doing this evening is at the convention is helping voters get a bigger, broader picture of all of hillary clinton's career. this is someone who has fought for decades on behalf of kids and families. that's going to be her mission moving forward as president and a lot of voters just aren't familiar with her accomplishments, with her work out of law school to make sure that disabled kids got access to public education. how she worked for -- to provide universal health care for all americans and when she lost that fight she kept at it in a republican congress got the children's health insurance program passed, her historic work to reduce nuclear stockpiles as secretary of state, the list goes on and on and what we're going to spend time on tonight and president clinton is going to talk about tonight is her lifelong motivation and commitment to those fights and to making a

real difference in people's lives. >> robby mook, thanks for joining us this morning. robin. >> all right, george. now to the republicans, donald trump on the attack trying to make the most of turmoil here at the convention. and addressing that speculation about russian hackers. abc's tom llamas is on the campaign trail with trump in charlotte, north carolina. good morning, tom. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. donald trump calling those claims from the clinton campaign conspiracy theories and going after many of the speakers last night at the democratic convention except for one. >> what a mess they have going. >> reporter: overnight, donald trump seizing on the fallout from the hacking of the dnc and the ousting of former party chair debbie wasserman schultz. >> i've watched her for years and what she was is hillary clinton's flunkie. she was rigging the system for hillary. as soon as there's heat put on hillary's person, hillary says, you're fired. >> reporter: the clinton

campaign trying to tie trump to the hack possibly by russian agents. democrats point to trump's affinity for russian leader vladimir putin. >> i never met putin in all fairness but that putin likes trump and, therefore, he went in and he stole it and he wants trump to win, okay, now, i have to say this, number one, it was one of the weirdest conspiracy -- >> reporter: but the republican nominee signaling he would be a friend to russia. >> wouldn't it be nice if russia and us and a couple of others went out and knocked the hell out of isis? >> reporter: trump also calling out democratic presidential candidate senator bernie sanders for endorsing clinton. >> the sad thing is that if he didn't give up he really would have left a legacy. >> reporter: trump live tweeting the democratic national convention, posting bernie sanders totally sold out to crooked hillary clinton. all of that work, energy and money and nothing to show for it. and trump already looking past the democratic convention.

>> i would kill her in the debate, oh, by the way, am i looking forward to that debate. oh. >> reporter: and last night, donald trump pretty much going after every speaker in prime time at the democratic convention with the exception of one, first lady michelle obama. robin. >> that was noted. all right, tom, thank you very much. as george was just saying new polls show donald trump getting a boost after the republican convention last week. abc's jon karl joins us now to break them down and the race tighter than ever, right, jon. >> reporter: absolutely, robin. it's hard to measure a convention bounce at this point but it seems trump has clear momentum, especially on favorability and trust on voters. in fact, nate silver, our partners at five-:30tyeight put a chance of a trump victory at nearly 54% if the election was held there today and get there by looking at the state polls. let's take a look at our map, the red states are the states that republicans won in 2012, blue, democrats. right now they have trump ahead

in nevada, iowa, ohio, pennsylvania and florida and as you can see at the top, that gets them well beyond the 270 electoral votes he would need to win but i've got to caution, robin, this is a very fluid race and even in these states, the polling is all over the place. >> a lot of time between now and november. all right, thank you so much, jon. >> okay, robin, we move on to massive wildfires in the west. firefighters trying to battle the blaze and abc's kayna whitworth is on the scene in santa clarita with the late of the. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: good morning. we're at the sand fire, the biggest in california. more than 33,000iccers, 10% contained leaving behinds scenes like this. 20 homes have been destroyed and that includes the homes of firefighters themselves. this blaze has been explosive burning up to 10,000 acres a day but it is now pushing east into the angeles national forest and away from populated areas so because of that some people who were evacuated were allowed back

in their homes last night. of course, george, that is if they have anything to return to. >> boy, it is just devastating. okay, kayna, thanks very much. now back to new york and amy has the other top stories. >> good morning, we begin with the bombing outside the united nations offices in somalia. 13 killed including seven u.n. guards. a suicide bomber struck a somali security checkpoint. al shabaab has claimed responsibility. 19 people have died after a former employee went on a stabbing rampage at a home for the mentally disabled near tokyo. this is the worst mass killing in japan since world war ii. police say the man was angry over being fired and wrote to japanese lawmakers warning them of his attack plan but they did nothing. back here in this country dallas police are seeing a surge of people applying for law enforcement jobs since the ambush that killed five officers this month. just days after the attack, police chief david brown urged protesters to serve the community and join the force and

we welcome you back to "gma" and that is the church in northern france where attackers took hostages this morning during mass killing a priest before police took them down. pope francis condemning the attacks saying his thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the violence. one more terror attack. also right now, it is bill clinton's night here in philly. we see him last night giving bernie sanders a standing ovation. one of the big questions tonight is how are sanders supporters going to treat the former president when he takes the stage to speak about his wife hillary. we'll get into that in our big board. also thousands of firefighters battling massive fires in the west. 10,000 homes evacuated in california and millions are on alert for even hotter temperatures. and this morning, gas prices in some states dropping below $2 a gallon.

appearance here at the democratic convention tonight. i had a chance to sit down with them yesterday. >> my life changed dramatically on february 26th, 2012. >> reporter: mothers, each with their own stories of unspeakable loss. >> sybrina fulton, the mother of trayvon martin and the mother of jordan davis, the young man shot and killed in jacksonville, florida, for playing loud music in his car. >> my name is lezley mcspadden. my son is michael brown. he was killed on august 9th in ferguson. >> i am cleopatra, mother of the late hadiya pendleton murdered january 29th, 2013 shot in the back. >> i'm ria hamilton, my son what dontre hamilton. he had 21 bullet holes in his body. i did not get any justice. >> i'm geneva reed-veal, mother of sandra bland. she ended up dead in a jail

not going to happen so they want to see what they can do to make sure it doesn't happen to other families and also discussed, you know, people believe, george, you have to be on one side or the other. they address police are being targeted and clearly address that. and what they're seeing in their own communities and also saying, i told them i've been listening a lot to man in the mirror, michael jordan -- michael jordan, michael jackson's song about how when change starts with you and they were talking about accountability on all fronts with everyone involved. >> that should be so powerful to see them all up on that stage. >> it will be powerful. they'll be up on that stage tonight and this is not something that they want to do. they haven't been together like this. they have on the campaign trail and they said, george, when they start sharing their stories that they'll hear cries from the audience and it's other mothers who are feeling finally they're not alone and each of these mothers are doing work in their respective communities, yes, it's a national stage tonight. but they want to make i clear they are trying to help in their

>> ♪ >> hey, i'm matt o'donnell. eight:twenty seven on this tuesday july 26. checking out i-95 with karen rogers. >> matt look at the traffic jam. this is i-95 southbound near allegheny. you can see we're pretty gamed at this point past bridge street to approaching the vine and that's where they have one of those police checkpoints. they're not allowing vehicles more than 5 tons to continue traveling southbound on i-95 there. i have to say though look at the travel time. a 29 minute ride from woodhaven to the vine. yesterday that delay was twice as long. so it's not nearly as bad today as it was yesterday even though we're talking speeds of 12 miles an hour. so here's one of the other checkpoints on i-95 northbound as you exit off for the platt and schuylkill. you can see you're traveling about 10 miles an hour here. i-95 northbound jammed from 420 to that checkpoint there so that's creating a pretty good sized delay there as well. watch out for those delays but

not as bad as yesterday. downed tree causing a problem. you'll find a couple countries, downed wires. this is is on rider's ferry road in lower merion. traffic is getting by slowly matt. >> turning down the burners just a little bit in the accuweather forecast. here's dave murphy. >> matt we are still on the warm side this morning, sun's up a little bit humid. take a look at the temperatures. 77 degrees right now but as we go through the day the humidity is going to drop. accuweather says a high of 95 this afternoon. still hot, still a day for cool drinks and some of those heat precautions but it will be far less oppressive than yesterday especially later in the afternoon as the humidity comes down. tomorrow sunny and hot 93. thursday we kind of turn things around. the breeze starts to come up from the humid southwest again getting us stickier in the afternoon a front could trigger strong thunderstorms. again that is thursday matt. >> at the dnc in philadelphia more bernie sanders protests, former president clinton

unacceptable. >> what did you say to her. >> we talked about the injustices that we continue to see happen within our communities again and again and again. >> she endorsed all of us. she contacts us. she still calls us. we still get letters when we're not traveling with her. >> when you had the two killings of black men, and then the killing of police officers, it was like one day, second day, third day. >> right. >> how do you all handle this unrest? >> well, let me -- >> that we see. >> let me take that one and i couldn't watch the tv. i couldn't watch any of it because it was too much for me. >> you know that police officers' families have also lost lives. >> yes. >> what is your feeling when you see how police officers feel that they have been targeted recently. >> what they feel is what we've been talking about. those are the issues that people have been living every day. >> yes. >> now the conversation is a little louder because the police

have become victims. >> right, i'm not saying the assaults on law enforcement are right at all. >> no. >> you know, killing someone with a gun is just -- it never a life should be taken. >> that's right. >> and so what you see happening to the police now why they're being targeted is because of all the root of the systemic racism and the poverty and the way there's no relationship between the communities and the police and law enforcement, that is the root and so what you see now is that, you know, there's a bursting of the seams here. >> this is a bad time to be a good cop in this country. >> yes, it is. >> we need to remember they have lives too. let's stop asking the officer to do all of these things and then we're not willing to do what we need to do. we need to do self-check. you can't say they are the bad guy but i'll bet you what, break into my home, i'm calling

mr. officer. oh, yes, i am. absolutely and we have to remember that. >> we don't hate police officers. >> not at all. >> absolutely we don't hate police officers. >> a lot of people get call up on the uniform but under that uniform is somebody that belongs to somebody who really loves them. >> i'm glad that you said that because it's so true because i look at you as veries even though you're a group and see you as individual, same thing with police officers. what is it that you want and there's just no room for negotiation, has to change in your opinion? >> our leaders need to be accountable. >> legislation, keeping guns out of the hands of people who should not have guns. the easiest things that you can do to start protecting community, not just minority communities, but the communities at large. >> their shared pain now transformed into a lifelong bond and a powerful message. >> we all have gone through tragedies and just to be around people who know what we are

going through, unless you have lost a child, you don't know this side. so, you know, i know her heart. i know her heart. you know, it's just like i know them. it's like i know the pain because i live the pain every day. >> we're very protective of each other. >> i see that. >> so much so. >> such a bond that you see between all of them and it's a club none of them wanted to join and the reason that they're joined together is to help other families so it doesn't happen to them and they help one another because yesterday geneva, that's sandra bland's mother, it was a year ago yesterday that they buried her daughter and it was very difficult but they were there for each other, laughter, tears but a real connection they have. >> what a powerful message she had, bad time to be a good cop reaching out to that side. >> they're not anti-police. they're not -- like she said she'll be the first ones to call the police if there's trouble.

you think about each other's messages? >> you know, it's interesting, the day i realized we really did have quite a big difference was the day my diet book came out she wrote a blog about how much she hates diet books so i thought, okay, we have this difference but what i've come 20 realize we really are much more similar. i have seen so much of her journey up close and personal and vice versa and so happy to see her in a good place and inspired. >> pia, you love mara's diet book, don't you. >> this is the thing, her book was so open and honest about where she came from and that was what was really important. it wasn't this like, oh, i'm a thin happy person, i have struggles and i think the end game is all about being healthy and healthy. that's how she got to her place so that's fantastic. >> i can see how you two are related. all right. teresa, i want to bring you into the conversation because you got fans out here. you've been struggling with weight your whole life and you relate to more -- sorry, essie, your experience is more like pia's, correct. >> correct.

definitely through social media, so popular now, i felt the pressure to be a little smaller. a little thinner but with the power of social media and the body positive community i celebrate my size with confidence. definitely made me feel better about myself so i know you've definitely dealt with social media. how do you feel about the pressure? >> social media has been the thing that has made me kind of come to this happy place. because i surround myself and my feed is filled with women who look like you and elise and that makes me feel good about myself. my favorite #iamenough. no matter what size or color or 5b89, you are enough as you are. that's important to me. >> i know you've been struggling as well. tell me about your experience. >> yes, i struggled with my weight my entire life. i know i'll never be a size 2 or a 4 but i'm on my way to self-acceptance. when did that come to you. >> i found that i didn't start accepting and loving myself more when i started losing weight, i

started losing weight when i started loving and accepting myself more. because when i took the food out, i had to replace it with something and what i replaced it with that was effective was self-care. resting when you're tired. drinking when you're thirsty, giving yourself nourishing food and really loving yourself. that for me was the key. >> we're walking over to the yoga mats. but, brittany, you're struggling with your weight but worried about your healthy food choices. >> being a thin woman is a misconception that we don't have to eat healthy or exercise and it's a health concern so i just -- mara, how do you feel about eating right. >> for me i've always said i don't think exercise is that important for weight loss. you can lose weight without exercise. for me it's all about what's up here and what's in here. exercise is about mind/body. >> mind/body. >> leave it all on the math. my favorite pose, i like balance poses so i love tree and probably will fall over on national tv but i hike to feel balanced and centered and that to me helps mind/body and gets me through the day.
