overnight and this was no meteor. a mystery. we have the answer to that mystery. a good thursday morning. we begin with hillary clinton preparing to take the stage for the final day of the dnc today. dnc, that is, today, after some of the biggest names in politics delivered a rallying cry on her behalf. >> president obama had the crowd on their feet even before he started speaking. defending his own legacy and depicting donald trump as a bully who's unfit to be president. then there was a grateful hillary clinton who joined the president on stage after he praised her intelligence, toughness and tenacity. >> vice president joe biden didn't mince any words accusing trump of exploiting our fears. the latest from lauren lyster live from philadelphia. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. democratic leaders trying to pass the baton. pennsylvania avenue transported

wooing voters with your charisma but dealing with crises and tragedy, things like the sandy hook massacre and other horrible events and he was trying to make the distinction in his speech in that video of the tough times kind of punctuated that. that this is a tough job and he was making the point that in his view with hillary clinton's resume, she is qualified to do it and donald trump is not. >> all right, certainly puts things into perspective as to how big of a job it is. lauren lyster, thanks so much. protesters are expected to gather around the convention center there in philadelphia for the fourth straight day. at least seven demonstrators were arrested last night after climbing a security fence. many are demanding sweeping democratic reforms. and not that they needed it but democrats were armed with a new round of ammunition to use against donald trump handed to them by donald trump himself. >> earlier in the day trump called on russia to hack hillary clinton's e-mails and release them publicly. abc's adrienne bankert is here

to explain. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. democrats pouncing on donald trump's word to russia. his campaign manager says his comments were meant to be a joke about hillary clinton's handling of the now infamous e-mails. this morning, moscow is responding. donald trump igniting a firestorm. >> i wish i had that power. >> reporter: accusations he seemingly invites russia to meddle in the presidential election, others saying it's just sarcasm. >> russia, if you're listen, i hope you're able to find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing. i think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press. let's see if that happens. >> reporter: those missing e-mails from hillary clinton's private server when she was secretary of state, trump's comments come as speculation widens about russia's alleged involvement in the e-mail hacking of the democratic national convention committee. the republican presidential candidate standing firm after being pressed by reporters.

this morning a legal expert tells abc news his comments are not criminal but protected free speech. >> definitely free speech for him. adrienne, thank you. more controversy surrounding donald trump's wife this morning. according to the huffington post her professional website has been taken down. this comes as questions were being asked about her biography on the site which claims she has a degree in design and architecture. a book earlier this year had said that melania left college after just one year to pursue modeling. still ahead, no winner in last night's powerball. the jumbo jackpot now eighth largest ever. chaos on board a flight. a man accused of assaulting a flight attendant, hear what started it all. a hall of famer showing off his wounds left by a shark. this was the scene in los

angeles last night as a car plowed in the front of a home where a bible study meeting was taking place. at least one was killed. eight others hurt. some seriously. the female driver fled the scene after the accident and was being sought by police. the victims inside the house range in age between 40 and 80. we do have new video of that terror attack on a french church as it unfolded. police moving in on the church, shields up, the two attackers inside with the hostages, using them to block the door. one hostage is seen being led to safety. see it right there. moments later the killer is running out shot dead by the police. isis claimed responsibility and the pope reacting to the murder of the priest calling it an act of war. but pope francis clarifying his remarks saying it's not a religious war. prosecutors in baltimore have dropped the charges against the three remaining officers

remaining to be try in the death of freddie gray. he died in a police van. three officers acquitted and a fourth ended in a hung jury and the police commissioner says it will help the city to move forward. the man who tried to assassinate president reagan could be free as early as next week. john hinckley jr. is seen here. he spent the last 35 years in a mental opt but now a judge says he's no longer a danger to himself or others. president reagan's oldest son said he and his father forgave him but patti davis says she's sickened by the decision. we're all familiar with traffic cameras. they're meant to catch drivers running red lights and turn out they may be saving lives. a new commission finds when cities deactivate cameras traffic deaths from running red lights go up about 30%. on a lighter note the powerball jackpot is $478
