elevator in the basement. we have two reports tonight and sara bloomquist is live at hahnemann hospital but first john rawlins is live outside of the cjc. have investigators find out what caused the accident? >> they know what occurred an ascending rapid decent of an elevator car. but they are not saying if they know why or if they have ever investigated a similar incident. that apparently is its policy. occupants rushed out and first responders rushed in. something terrible rocked the building. >> nobody told us anything we were on the 11th floor and heard a loud explosion. a loud boom. >> it wasn't an explosion but a bizarre chain reaction involving two elevators, two people sent the to the hospital a court

employee later released and a more seriously injured sergeant in the sheriff's department. >> i think it was an upper floor. >> this shows two elevator cars in a common shaft. one car sling shotted upward with such speed and force it breached the concrete ceiling and that is the machine room or penthouse, heavy debris from that impact rained down more than 100 feet on to the car that the employee was riding forcing that elevator down. >> the building is closed and remains closed today. >> the court system says they will reopen the cjc tomorrow. late this afternoon they reverse that saying it will be closed for most matters including all trials. there will be open for business certain bail matters in the

basement. done in the courtroom in the basement and potential from abuse orderers, other than that the cjc will be closed tomorrow. live in center city, john rawlin,ing channel 6 "action news." >> lets switch live to sara bloomquist at hahnemann hospital. what is the latest on the condition of the sheriff's deputy. >> reporter: i spoke with sergeant owen's father, here outside of the emergency a short time ago, he did not want to go on camera understandably upset. he confirmed that his son is now in surgery after suffering broken bones in his back and he worried constantly about his son's safety and never imagined anything like that. and the woman hurt was treated and released. >> the court clerk was released at 3:15 giving reporters a thumbs up and wave.

she suffered minor injuries after an elevator malfunction this morning. family and fellow deputies arrived this afternoon to be at the side of paul owens who was seriously hurt when the elevator he was riding in jumped to the roof of the cjc causing debris to rain on smith's elevator car down below. >> he is in pretty bad shape. several broken bones in his back and on his way to surgery. the mayor called and talked to the family. >> this morning sergeant owens just left the hearing for monsignor william lynn and when into the elevator to retrieve a jury for another matter and the car was malfunctioned and he was thrown about and suffered serious injuries. >> it's like a projectile in a building or box and you stop and
