pictures of themselves to him online. thursday night, jim is off. i'm monica malpass. and the the big story on "action news" tonight is the arrest of brandon speach for alleged crimes targeting children. a mother tells us speach was babysitting her kids when she discovered he was not who he said he was. christie ileto spoke with her exclusively tonight. >> reporter: that's right. that mother was so shaken up, understandably so. she said she's the mother of nine works seven days a week and it was while she was at work that this man's mugshot aired on tv. that's when she said she realized she had left her kids home with an alleged criminal. >> i said, i gotta go. i'm like, i gotta go. >> reporter: the mother who doesn't want her identity shown choked back tears reliving the moment she discovered she had left her kids home with a wanted man. >> so i just was racing home or whatever. i got home, calling the cops telling them that was the guy in my house.

he's my babysitter. >> reporter: brandon speach is facing sexual abuse charges among other things for allegedly posing as a woman on social media to solicit nude images of teenage boys. detectives say it happened over the last three years. >> how did he gain your trust? >> he gained my trust because he was working at the school. >> reporter: philadelphia city schools confirmed he worked at an elementary school but through nonprofit education works. they tell "action news" they're shocked and deeply troubled by the allegations and reassured parents all our employees, even part time, are required and successfully complete a comprehensive federal and state background check. >> i'm his grandmother. >> reporter: you're his grandmother. >> i don't want to talk to you. >> reporter: speach's family did not want to talk to us. but familiar friends called it jarring. >> you never expect somebody that's your neighborhood, that you grew up with. >> he never did anything to my kids. i always question my kids about everything. he never did anything wrong to my kids. >> reporter: if you could say something to brandon what would

you say to him? >> why me? why me? you betrayed my trust and my kids' trust. i never thought it could be you. like, i just never thought it would be you, like, you never showed me any signs. >> reporter: education works says speach has been fired from his position. he's in jail on a $250,000 bond. christie ileto "channel 6 action news." we have new details from the past hour about this inferno. a gas line fire near the garden state parkway fithly out tonight. it will been burning for 8 1/2 hours shooting a flame high in the air from 1:30 this afternoon until 10:00 tonight. this is how it looked earlier along ocean heights avenue in egegg harbor township. this is -- south jersey gas says a live electrical wire fell onto a metal guardrail along the road. the electric current then traveled into a nearby eight-inch gas main causing it

to ignite. cruise were finally able to extingish it about 10:00. fortunately no one was hurt. the sun has set on one of the most stifling days of 2016 with humidity making it feel like it's more than 100 degrees. and tomorrow will make it official, this heat -- our fifth heat wave of the year. unfortunately, it only gets worse from here. so folks took advantage of more mild conditions to get in their exercise at dusk. it was too brutal for many to do it in the middle of the day. cecily tynan at the "action news" big board tonight with details on our excessive heat warning. hi, cecily. >> hi, monica. unfortunately, this heat and humidity is going to get worse before it gets better. and today was a tough day. our high today, 95 degrees, but then you factor in the dew point's in the 70s. the heat index soared up to 105. and this is the second day in & our fifth heat wave of the year. and it looks like we have four more days of temperatures in the 90s. so we're not even halfway

through it yet. and stormtracker 6 live double scan showing that we're not getting a lot of activity this the form of thunderstorms to cool us off. most of the activity is just north of our viewing area, but we do have some pretty active storms just in the northern tier of our viewing area. penn arjil right now is getting in the action. this band of storms, 133 lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes. and also reporting 40-mile-an-hour winds. the lehigh valley, allentown, bethlehem and easton getting a few scattered showers. the problem is that we're in a stagnant weather situation. nothing is moving. so what we're getting today will continue right through the week and right through the weekend. that excessive heat warning for the i-95 corridor has now been extended until 9:00 sunday. i'll talk specifically about the heat index to expect and whe whe leaf is on the way in the accuweather forecast. monica? >> thank you. and philadelphia's heat line is being extended since the excessive heat warning runs through sunday now. that number is on your screen,

215-665-9040. operators can answer your questions about heat stress and medical warning signs. that heat line is open until midnight and it resumes tomorrow morning at 8:30. they are a new look eagles, new coach, new scheme, new players. and in tonight's preseason debut, it was all eyes on our third-string quarterback. "action news" sports director ducis rodgers here with highlights of the man's birds fan came to see. over all there are some positives to take away. but the bulk of the attention and the bulk of the playing time against the bucs tonight goes to carson wentz. this is also the head coaching debut for doug pederson. he hears it from the fans. they want wentz from the get-go. wentz makes an appearance late in the first half. his first series, a nice 19-yard strike here to tight end zach ertz. he has his best chance to score in the third queat but a little high. it's picked off.

the rookie does show his ability to scramble. and he's not afraid of contact. whoo. goes up and over there. wentz goes 12 for 24 for 89 yards. no touchdowns. the one interception. the eagles win this game, 17-9. >> he came out and he was in the right frame of mind. he was excited and looking -- looking forward to playing and made some -- made some -- you know, made a couple tough runs for us, which we needed. and then they completed the ball where it needed to be. by no means is he perfect or anybody was perfect tonight, but pleased for his first outing and just got to continue to work with him on a daily basis and get him where he needs to be. >> he's a work in progress but he's shown flashes of brilliance. and as you saw there, he took a lot of the hits, gets back up. he's a tough guy. >> all right, terrific. thank you, ducis. >> four women -- bob, how are they feeling after tonight's big win? >> they're feeling pretty good.

reporting live at the linc, bob brooks, "channel 6 action news." monica? >> thank you, bob. four women who were swept out to see while boogie-boarding in strathmere are okay thanks to the efforts of the kieft guard. this newly released video shows the rescue last night. take a look. the women were swept out by strong currents about 7:30 which is after the lifeguards leave. two good samaritans in canoes tried to reach the women but their boats capsized. they were able to swim back to shore though, themselves. someone shined a laser at an airplane that was trying to land at northeast philadelphia airport tonight. these faa re-creations show what kind of danger that can pose. but fortunately, the pilot tonight was able to make a safe landing. philadelphia police say it happened at 7:20 tonight and they believe the laser came from the direction of woodhaven and thornen roads. a viewing was held tonight in northeast philadelphia for three small children killed in a murder-suicide last weekend.

8-year-old leanna, 5-year-old mj, and 2-year-old willow short were found dead in their berks county home along with their parents. it's still not clear which of the parents killed the family or how. some of philadelphia's top law enforcement officials spent this evening walking through what they say is one of the city's most violent neighborhoods. district attorney says williams led the effort. it kicked off in the 2200 block of west lehigh avenue in philadelphia. he said he wanted to meet folks in the neighborhood especially those affected by gun violence. the fallout continues tonight after an about-face by a key prosecution witness on day three of the trial of attorney general kathleen kane. political consultant josh morrow reversed his testimony and now says he conspired with kane to leak some documents with secret grand jury testimony to a local newspaper. morrow says they planned to blame that leak on her former boyfriend and top deputy adrian king.

police tell us there's nothing they can do at this point about a distracted driver who was texting with her hands and driving with her foot along the schuylkill expressway. "action news" first showed you this now viral video last night at 11:00. take a look. authorities say they need to catch a driver in the act in order to ticket them. sarah delong recorded the video from the passenger's seat while her husband followed that mystery driver for about 20 minutes. they honked and told the driver to pay attention, and, yes, they took photos of the license plate. they called 911 and state police. even though we may never learn who the woman with her foot on the wheel is, aaa says distracted driving contributes to 5,000 deaths a year, and this is a lesson for all of us to put down the phone and put your hands on the wheel. clayton, new jersey, has a new police chief tonight. the borough promoted andrew davis from sergeant to chief. the bouree also pro-- borough

. a 3-year-old boy was injured on a roller coaster in westmoreland county, pennsylvania, today. it happened on a wooden coaster at the idlewild park outside pittsburgh. a dispatcher says the boy fell from the ride but the park has

not provided any details. that accident comes on the heels of two others at amusement parks this week alone. on sunday, a 10-year-old boy was killed at a water slide in kansas. and on monday, three girls were injured after falling from a ferris wheel in tennessee. firefighters will be back tomorrow to the scene of this deadly explosion at an apartment complex in maryland. at least two people were killed. dozens injured when the blast happened just before midnight. today, much of that building is leveled. witnesses say parents were dropping their children from the windows trying to get them away from the growing flames. >> what i saw was like a lot of buildings on fire. i got so scared. there were like people jumping out the window, like, screaming for help and kids screaming because there were a lot of kids scared. >> residents called 911 weeks ago to report the smell of gas.

numerous fractures in the republican party are deepening tonight. donald trump threatened to stop fundraising for the republican national committee if they shift money from his campaign to house and senate candidates as they have threatened. meanwhile, senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says the gop's chances of keeping control of the senate in november are dicey. he says the party's in a dogfight over 24 seats. democrat hillary clinton is cantalizing among the disarray of republicans to try to undercut trump's clals that he -- claims that he will help the working class. in michigan she called her rival's economic plan outlandish and says he outsources the very jobs he should give to americans. clinton is hoping to win back soft of the of the blue-collar voters who are looking for work, the so-called reagan democrats. medical marijuana will continue to be classified as a schedule i drug by the federal government delivering a blow to nationwide legalization efforts.

but the obama administration says it will allow more research into marijuana's medical uses. currently, only one place the university of mississippi can grow marijuana for scientific research. today's decision came after the fda says it reviewed 500 studies and found none of them demonstrated a safe or effective medical use. despite the federal ban, 25 states and washington, d.c., have legalized pot for either recreational or medicinal use. funeral arrangements have been set now for channel 6tv star carter mur brir who you know as captain noah. the host of a children's show died tuesday at the age of 90. next monday at 10:00 a.m. at st. paul's church in ard and the funeral mass will follow at 11:00. and please join us this sunday morning during the 10:00 a.m. edition of "action news" for a special tribute to

road right now, martin's creek. 611, it's heading towards portland, oxford, wind gap got heavy downpours. lots of lightning with this and some torrential rain. that's really the theme of any thunderstorms you get when we have this kind of heat and humidity it can bring vivid lightning, quick downpours. they typically do not move quickly. the heat index shows you can see the area of getting the rain, the poconos, 69 degrees, rain-cooled philadelphia, we're still sweltering at 11:00 at night, it feels like 92. wilmington, 91, feels like 89 degrees in reading. satellite suction along with action radar showing you can see how most of the thunderstorms north of our viewing area, weaver got this high pressure just sitting over bermuda going nowhere fast. and this is what's pumping up the whippeds out of the south-southwest. and this is creating a ridge of high pressure. most of the activity is riding up along that ridge, areas up to the north. this shows that if you do want

to get outside, get some exercise, do it early in the morning. at 8:00, it's already going to feel like 89 degrees. but then from lunchtime through 6:00, heat indices above 100 degrees. so that is dangerously hot, peaking around 2:00 with a heat index around 106. and then still feeling like 96 degrees at 8:00. and this continues right through the weekend. saturday, i think, will really be the worst of it. the air temperature, 97. but the heat index, 108. and sunday won't be much better, heat index up to 106. this is going to be the toughest heat wave so far of the year. a great place to be down the shore. the ocean temperatures cooled off to 77 after a record 83.3 yesterday in atlantic city. even the ocean's warm. air temperature tomorrow 88 degrees, warm and humid. saturday, bumping it up to 90. and sunday, 90 before the possibility of some late thunderstorms. the poconos, not going to be
