in the news we have new video that could help catch the man that attacked a septa bus driver. and the defense has rested in the trial of kathleen kane, without the embattled attorney general, taking the stand. and the big story "action news" is the dangerous hot spell expected to last through the entire weekend. it's uncomfortable when you step outside. these kids are trying to catch a drop of water at a spray park today. the oppressive humidity make its feel over 100 degrees and the heat warning is extended through sunday night. melissa magee in for david murphy has the latest from accuweather. >> reporter: we have temperatures in the lower 90s, but this is the problem, as you look at the dew points, we have a dew point number in philadelphia of 75 degrees, any time have you numbers above 70 when you talk about the dew point and humidity, you can feel the oppressive air outside. a 76 degree dew point in

wilmington and 80 in dover and cape may. when you factor that in on your skin, and little wind, it fells like 103 in philadelphia. heat index in dover coming in at 114, feeling like 100 in reading and the triple digit heat index in allentown 102, and not much relief at the coast in cape may, your current heat index 106. as far as what to expect, we have the excessive heat warning at the i-95 metro area. this stays up until 9:00 p.m. on sunday because it's not just the heat and humidity, remember that heat indexes range from 105 to 110 across the region. we'll track the heat through the day here. for the i-95 metro area, we are peaking to 105, and then up to 106 at 3:00 today we stay in the triple digits through 7:00 p.m. and backing down to the middle to lower 90s in 90s through the overnight hours as far as the

this is about a dozen city pools that were suppose to close today but because of the heat wave, this site said they will stay open at least through the weekend. the sun is hot and the water is cold and the heat wave is here. unfortunately it appeared at the end of the season and some pools like cecil b. moore and heights richmond. >> i condition believe they will close today. >> the closures of the 70 plus pools are staggered over the next few weeks and today was suppose to be the last swim at a dozen of them. >> school is ready to go back and college kids most of them are lifeguards and they are ready to go back to school. good news came in for swimmers at cecil b. moore and they heard they would extend the pool season through the weekend and that was the hope for the rest of the pools expected to close over the weekend. >> i like to have fun.

midnight. in other news, a 6-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was caught in a crossfire of a gun battle. three adults were also shot and multiple cars and houses were hit with bullets in the german town section of philadelphia. annie mccormick is live at saint christopher's hospital where the youngest victim is being treated. >> reporter: that is right. 6-year-old mahath brown is here, his family says he is a little warrior and he will survive. his family also has a message for the people responsible for this and people that may have information but are not coming forward to police. >> someone needs to speak up and say something. people's children are dying for no reason. >> brown's grandparents spoke to us outside of saint christopher's hospital where the 6-year-old remains after being

shot multiple times. the gun five broke out last night and witnesses described two vehicles rolling through the neighborhood firing like the wild wild west. a 35-year-old friend driving him to his mom's in this pontiac tried to dry drive to safety and they shot them both. the police brought both of them to the hospital. >> he took a lot. his little body was riddled with bullets. >> the 6-year-old has shattered bones and internal damage, two 29-year-old men were also shot and they describe a minivan with shooters inside firing on the same block. >> this was definitely a gun battle. they found homes and cars hit and 50 shell casings including some for an ak assault rifle intended for combat. >> i don't believe it's a drug

trying to prove he was wrongly convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys. >> he took the stand and said he is absolutely innocent. asking for the dismissal of all charges or a dismissal. coming up at 12:30 chad pradelli has more details. breaking news out of the montgomery county courthouse in norristown where both sides have rested in the trial of attorney general, kathleen kane. the defense ended the case without kane to testify and without witnesses. >> they heard from the reporter that received the documents at the heart of this case today. kane is accused of leaking the material to the daily news and lying about it under oath. however the reporter told the jury he will not name the person that gave him the documents. john rawlins will have a live report from the montgomery county courthouse at 12:30.

we have new video of a violent assault on a septa bus and please are looking for the attacker. the man is seen arguing with the driver on a route 22 bus, he getted off at broad street and then gets back on and punches the driver and slams his head on the dash board and bites him in the face. the suspect has a unique tattoo on his left arm there. if you recognize him you are asked to contact philadelphia police. at this hour the search continues for those still missing at the scene of a deadly explosion and apartment fire just outside of the nation's capital. more than 30 people taken to hospitals after the blast many silver spring maryland. an unknown amount of residents

american shoppers spent less money at clothing stores last month according to the latest numbers. and spending at grocery stores dropped by the most in five years and because of gas station prices sales were down there as well. retail sales were flat overall for july and they were offset by spending online however. and american children's heart health is worse than previously report the. more than 9 out of 10 kids eat a poor diet and more than half of american youngsters don't get enough physical activities to get heart healthy guidelines. only 5% of teens getting the recommended hour a day. coming up on "action news"

issues with precipitation, there could be a shower from time to time or a rumble of thunder but most of that is north and west of philadelphia. but the big story is the heat and the oppressive humidity. we'll show you the picture outside. sky 6 hd we are down the shore in cape may, that is the place to be to beat the heat and humidity. you get a breeze and moisture coming in off the atlantic ocean and all of those beach umbrellas doing what they can to beat that heat. inland at this hour, it's quite hot, a high temperature of 92 degrees, you factor in the humidity we have a heat index of 103 at this hour. and cape may 93 and beach haven 96 and 90 for reading and lower 90s in dover. right now we have dew point numbers in the 70s, so when you factor that in it feels much hotter we are calling for triple digit heat indexes and quite oppressive.
