the 90's officially makes it a heat wave. today's high 97 degrees tying the hottest day so far this year. but this heat wave likely will last eight days so that will make it the longest heat wave of the year and it's definitely going to be the most intense. today the heat index soared up to 109 in philadelphia. the same in millville and wilmington. allentown and trenton 107. cape may 108 and reading 104 and the heat index likely tomorrow will be even higher. now, storm tracker6 live double scan slowing that we have been seeing some pop-up showers and thunderstorms, nothing severe right now. there is one right over i-95 near palmyra, another one crossing the new jersey turnpike north of mount holly and another cluster near west chester and there's a cluster of thunderstorms leaving hunterdon county right now. not really cooling things off, nothing severe but we do have some lightning, some thunder and some heavy downpours and unfortunately this excessive heat warning last through the weekend.

the national weather service has now expanded it to include our entire viewing area. tomorrow could be even hotter than today and the heat index you can see around the i-95 corridor into south jersey and delaware 110. that would make it the hottest day so far this year. i'll talk more specifics coming up in the full accuweather forecast. brian. >> all right, cecily thank you. understandably the beach was the place to be today. the ocean provided some relief from the heat here in longport but get this, even ocean temperatures are nearing 80 degrees. live at police headquarters tonight is "action news" reporter jeff chirico. applies are now offering a reward in this case. >> reporter: that's right, brian, that reward stands at $10,000. we just spoke with the boy's grandmother who says he is in critical but stable condition after surgeries to repair his intestines and colon but he'll need more surgeries on his left arm. meanwhile police here say they have a half dozen detectives on the grounds investigating but they can't do it alone. >> please come forward even if you don't want to give your name identify yourself. >> reporter: philadelphia police are pleading with the public to share whatever they know about the wild west-like shooting in germantown that left four injured including a six-year-old boy. >> even if they think the information is small and inconsequential, you know, we have some of the best detectives and investigators in the world. >> somebody needs to speak up and say something. people's children are dying for no reason. >> reporter: mahaj brown's grandmother says he was hit while riding in his

godfather's car around 11:30 last night. police say gunmen in two vehicles fired 302040 bullets along the 500 block of east ashmead street. brown was expected to undergo several surgeries today. >> he was going home to go to bed from his grandmother's house, his mother's house and to get caught with assault rifles. >> reporter: neighbors woke to find bullet holes in their cars and homes. julian williams' front wall was struck twice. >> very lucky 'cause as you can see here if i was standing here it would have hit me right in the headism the shooting spree comes just days after a six-year-old girl was shot in west oak lane. police are offering $10,000 rewards for information about each case. parents here are on edge. >> i started crying. like 'cause it's just sad. kids walking outside getting shot and stuff. they can't play in they own environment and stuff like that. >> reporter: and investigators are considering several motives including an old turf rivalry. they're looking for a two-toned mercury mountaineer

with roof rack running board and disruptive turn signal on the grille. if you know anything about either case you're urged to call 215-686-tips. reporting live from police headquarters, jeff chirico channel6 "action news. >> all right jeff thank you. for the first time in court jerry sandusky took the stand today. the convicted pedophile proclaimed his innocence at an appeals hearing in center county this afternoon. the former penn state assistant football coach says he deserves a new trial because his original lawyers did not provide him an adequate defense. sandusky says they talked him out of testifying the first time around. the appeals hearing is scheduled to last two more days. it will resume on august 22nd. pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane's defense made a surprise move today. they rested their case without calling a single witness to the stand. "action news" reporter john rawlins was in court and as the story tonight -- has story from norristown. >> reporter: a smiling kathleen kane departing court today. earlier she told the judge she

didn't feel the need to testify. her lawyers asserted in court know reasonable jury would convict her. >> very well satisfied with the trial. >> reporter: some of the toughest testimony against kane came from her former deputy adrian king and political consultant josh morrow. morrow testified under immunity he and kane were deeply involved in a grand jury leak that resulted in this 2014 daily news article as well as a coverup, a wiretap recording of morrow and a third party was released to back up morrow. >> kathleen called me today and she's like adrian has documents for you to leak out. [laughter] you know, and it's all (bleep) like frank fina killing a jerry mondesire investigation. >> reporter: why didn't attorney general opt to tell her side. trial attorney and former prosecutor joseph mcgettigan believers it would mean kane would have to convince the jury her top hand picked advisers were both lying. >> she would have had to directly call persons liars and say that they were perc

"action news" reporter vernon odom has the story. >> reporter: the inventory at the fritz lumber company continues to dwindle. customers are still coming to this main line landmark even though word has spread that it will soon close forever. >> labor expenses, a lot of overhead that comes with this. there is competition and the economy has definitely hurt us. >> reporter: since the 19th century through five generations in fact the fritz family has owned and operated here in berwyn. starting out at 1863 as far suppliers and moving on into lumber and coal. the family grew to know their customers their families and their houses. a family member still reflecting on the enduring legacy of its family's business. >> we'll go the extra mile to find those things that not a lot of other places either don't know or don't really want to spend the time to do that. >> they had reputation and still do for selling the best
