"action news" reporter sarah bloomquist is covering the effects of this prolongd heave. we'll check in with her in a moment. first meteorologist cecily tynan and an excessive heat warning remains in effects for parts of the delaware valley tonight. >> and tomorrow definitely, rick. we are now on day six of our heat wave. today's high officially 94 degrees. we had dewpoints in the 60's so the heat index got up to 99 degrees which is certainly high but not as intense as over the weekend on saturday remember our heat index maxed out at 111. so, the current heat index has dropped to 96 in philadelphia, millville still 100, dover 102, reading and allentown 92 and trenton 94 degrees, so the heat indices not as intense as it has been. the problem, though, tomorrow it's just going to be as hot but it's going to be noticeably more humid. so, an excessive heat warning has been posted for the i-95 corridor outlying areas, it's going to be hot there as well with a heat advisory and what's going on, there's a warm front that will be

pushing in tonight and that's what will bring us that major uptick in the dewpoints. double scan live showing ahead of that warm front we do have some thunderstorms firing up right now, central pennsylvania and north of washington, d.c., a few of those could be sneaking in in the overnight hours. so, this is what to expect tomorrow. tomorrow will be the last day of extreme heat. i think temperatures will still be in the 90's on wednesday but the humidity will be much lower then. tomorrow, though, the heat index right up there. one oh he two to 108. so that is dangerously hot. some heavy thunderstorms around again. i'll have details on the timing of that and talk about relief finally on the way coming up in the full accuweather forecast. rick. >> all right, cecily, thank you. now let's check in with "action news" reporter sarah bloomquist live in fairmount park tonight. sarah, cabin fever something we hear about in the winter months but it's definitely an issue in the heat as well. >> rick, that's right. people are coming here to the fairmount park and the trails around the wissahickon creek

to try and find some relief and beat that feeling of cabin fever but of course not everyone can do that. we talked to one psychologist today who said that there really is an impact on mental health from this excessive heat. this heat is taking a toll. just ask anyone who has to commute to work in this weather. >> well, this time of the morning is a little cooler. coming home from work about 5 o'clock it's tough. >> some got out for exercise admitting the heat made today's run or walk down right difficult. >> it does but you got to fight it. you don't live life the same. to stay motivated you got to do what's hard and be different. >> everything is harder to do. it's more caughting. getting up a exhausting, walking the dog is exhausting, laundry is exhausting. all of it it just makes life a little tougher. >> but the heat's impact isn't just on the body physically. dr. frank farley a psychology professor at temple university says the heat's effect on mental health is very real as

well. >> psychologically it can lead to irritability, restlessness, you're kind of cooped up. you're a prisoner of the weather and we don't wander to be a prisoner of the weather. >> he's concerned should the hot weather continue that irritability will lead more people to act out. >> that irritation can lead almost in a contagious way to other kinds of behaviors and so i worry that if this particular heave continues we'lparticularheat wave continue an upparticular in behavior. >> but he has a solution. >> just lay down and relax. that can help. >> he also advises find something air conditioning anywhere you can find it. make friends and look for ways to be social in this weather. find any way to be cool. the city of philadelphia is trying to help. some of the public pools that were set to close for the season tonight will remain opened tomorrow for one extra day but you need to check

incident that took place in our community. >> reporter: berks county d.a. john adams said today that mark short was the person responsible for the murders of his wife, three young children and the family dog before he killed himself. authorities also confirm that mark short was the one who wrote the murder-suicide note found on a dining room table just feet away from where this horrific crime took place. >> at the request of the family they wish there we did not release the contents of the letter other than the fact that he admitted to buying the gun and he did commit the homicide. >> reporter: friends and family told investigators that mark and megan will a stormy marriage but she only called police one time. after officers arrived she told them she was afraid of her husband but she did not file charges. >> we advised her on how to get a protection from abuse order. in fact she he did say she was going to get one the next day but she never followed through. >> reporter: that all took place on july 18th.

the very next day mark short bought a gun. then on saturday, august 6th, the day megan planned on taking her children and moving to an apartment, mark short used one bullet each to kill his entire family and then kill himself. d.a. john adam says his hope now is that maybe this case will help another person trying to break free from an abusive relationship. >> we urge anyone who is in a similar situation to develop a safety plan and contact their local domestic violence agency for assistance. >> reporter: meanwhile a funeral mass for megan eight-year-old leanna five-year-old mark jr. and two-year-old willow was held this past friday. reporting live from reading, walter perez channel6 "action news. rick. >> all right, walter, thank you. the jury is now deliberating the case against pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane. in closing arguments today district attorney kevin steele stuck to the theory that kane oversaw the illegal leaking of

grand jury material and then lied about the it. steel said kane wanted to embarrass a former prosecutor. kane's testifies team maintained she knew nothing about the leak. her attorney told the jury that the prosecution's witnesses conspired to leak the information without her knowledge. wilmington police looking for the man seen in this surveillance picture tonight. they say he's wanted for shooting a 64-year-old woman in the leg this morning. the shooting happened outside the west centreville latch rental commute just after 9 o'clock at sixth and jefferson. coworkers identified the victim as lun linda fulmer. fulmer is in stable condition at christiana hospital. no word yet on a motive for this shooting. one of two suspects wanted for targeting owners of asian businesses is now in police custody. norman bowen is under arrest. police are still working to track down anthony campbell. investigators say surveillance video shows the pair breaking into several businesses with

residents attached t the method of crime is the same. police say campbell and bowen are accused of threatening people who live inside at gunpoint. in some cases the victims were tied up before the thieves ransacked the place. a store employee was attacked at gun point as she was arriving to open a store in south philadelphia. surveillance video shows the attacker pointing a gun straight at the 37-year-old woman's head. the suspect ordered the employee to open the safe. he did get away with an undisclosed amount of money. police are searching for leads to track down the suspect. the robbery happened back on august 8th at the dollar general store on south 23rd street. students returning to classes at some philadelphia public schools will notice something new in the hallways. today the school district announced 43 schools now have hydration stations. officials showed off one of those stations this afternoon at ha brown academics plus school in kensington. as part of the $1 million initiative school officials say every school will have a minimum of three hydration

stations by the end of the upcoming school year. the goal is to encourage children to hydrate throughout the day. democratic senate candidate katie mcginty met with local students this afternoon in center city to talk about college affordability. the round table discussion took place at the philadelphia federation of teachers on chestnut street. local high school and college students shared their concerns about paying for college. mcginty laid outer her plan to make college affordable for pennsylvania families which includes better he financial aid options. pennsylvania senator pat toomey condemned his opponent today for her remarks on college affordable. he said "katie mcginty tried to slap hundreds of dollars a year in new taxes on college students and even lied about being the first in her family to go to college. "action news" reporter jeanette reyes was there for the remembrance. >> surely goodness and mercy shall follow you. >> reporter: it was a tearful goodbye to a beloved tv pioneer who brought warmth wisdom and laughter to hundreds of thousands in the delaware valley for nearly 30 years. >> i had my son's first grade teacher call me once and ask if i read the newspaper to my son every morning and i said no and she said well he knows all the current events and i said that's captain noah. >> ♪ >> reporter: today dozens gathered for an intimate funeral at saint paul's lutheran church in ardmore to bid farewell william carter merbreier better known as captain noah he. >> i was sitting through a service and thinking that we came so close to not putting that program on the air. and i realized if we hadn't done so, the lives, the

"action news" was at clara barton elementary school when two semi trucks dropped off 28,000 pounds of food and other essentials. pepsi co volunteers and feed the children staff distributed the goods to 800 low income families. it's the third year the two organizations have teamed up for the event. organizers say the donations will allow the families to focus on back to school preparations.

>> two more days of temps in the 90's but really one more day of intense humidity. that will be tomorrow. and then thursday and friday temperatures in the 80's. so. >> i'm liking it. >> we're almost there, almost there. storm tracker6 live double scan showing that we have rain free conditions here. i do want to zoom in and show you two things. first of all you can see that cluster of thunderstorms near baltimore, more than 300 lightning strikes the past 15 minutes. that whole system is slowly moving to the east. if it stays together we'll be getting some thunderstorms in our western suburbs this evening and i also want to show you this little line of what looks like showers moving through burlington county. this is actually a sea breeze front. that actually shows the winds off the ocean and that's really what has been cooling things off along the beaches today. the heat index right now certainly high but not as intense over the weekend. we have dewpoints dropping into the 60's today, so philadelphia feels like 96 right now, millville, though, feels like 100, dover 102, allentown 92 and cape may currently it feels like 91. so, tonight a warm front moves

in and that will bring us a return of some very sticky conditions. so, partly cloudy, warm, 72 in the suburbs, 78 for center city with a spotty thunderstorm possible as that warm front pushes in. satellite6 along with action radar showing the front itself is over virginia so as it moves in overnight tonight could get some thunderstorms. then we get in the warm sector of the system tomorrow. more thunderstorms with a cold front late in the day tomorrow. i to want to show you what's been going on, though, in louisiana. they've had more than a week now of some heavy showers. a low pressure developed and there has been pulling in all this tropical moisture and this is pretty amazing. accumulated rain the past four days off the charts, near new orleans about 30-inches of rain fell and has caused the historic and deadly flooding down there. back at home here tomorrow it's hazy, it's hot, it's humid. the high 94 degrees like today but the heat index above 100 with a dewpoints in the 70's.

it's going to feel a lot worse than today. then that cold front moves in late in the day. that will bring us a possibility of some heavy thunderstorms, could be severe especially across the lehigh valley and the poconos. and then on wednesday, you'll feel the difference in the air mass as we head through the day. the high 92 degrees, so that's eight days of a heat wave but with winds shifting out of the northwest it will become less humid as we head through the day and then real relief arrives on thursday and friday. if you are down the shore tomorrow finally a low risk of rip currents. delaware beaches 89 and jersey beaches 86 so that sea breeze and the possibility of some late day and evening thunderstorms. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, it is steamy again tomorrow. 94 degrees. a heat index above 100. some late day thunderstorms. wednesday it's still hot, 92, but noticeably less humid for the atlantic city air show. and thursday here we go, relief, partly sunny, 89 degrees. on friday a pretty nice day. it will be warm, 89 degrees. humidity in check.

it gets more humid on saturday with a high of 89 and sunday back up to 90 degrees, hot and humid and monday's looking unsettled with a possibility of some thunderstorms but look at that temperature, more seasonable with a high of 86. so tomorrow yet again be very careful but relief is on the way. >> all right, we'll take it. thank you cecily. some philadelphia students are already ready to go back to school. 1,000 book bags filled with school supplies were passed out this afternoon at the bridesburg boys and girls club. the fourth annual back to school barb featured games and music. also plenty of free food including cotton candy. abcs are world news tonight with david muir is next here on channel6.
