all across this region. this is bruce steele age 44. he's the montgomery county -- in montgomery county prison bail set at $1 million cash. he was arrested here at his roxborough apartment residence. he faces nearly three dozen charges of sex trafficking prostitution and involuntary servitude. two of his alleged victims detectives say were found in his apartment. the d.a. says bruce cash steele ran a sophisticated operation that stretched across the five county philadelphia region from essington to delaware county near the airport, all the way to king of prussia horsham and plymouth meeting in montgomery county. on out to chester and bucks counties and into philadelphia. steele allegedly used local hotels as rendezvous locations to place drug add directed women recruitd from philadelphia jails and the streets of kensington. detectives say he was keeping at least seven women in sexual slavery through violence and providing them with heroin. >> women were being arrested

in some of these hotels for engaging in illegal activity and his name seemed to keep coming up plus he was also involved in bailing -- bailing women out of the montgomery county correctional facility. >> reporter: prosecutors say steele advertised his illicit business on the web site back page drawing thousands of dollars per week. his victims apparently accountable to him for every penny they earned. >> the real difficult part about this was tracking down the victims. many of whom are in really difficult terrible life circumstances addicted to drugs, on the streets. >> reporter: rick, the montgomery county d.a.'s office believes there are many more women out there who have been used abused and victimized bicarb steele. he would like them to come forward. he wants to put steele away for many decades. live in roxborough, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news. >> vernon, thank you.

in delaware, police were investigating a home invasion in north wilmington which targeted elderly -- an elderly man and his disabled son. it happened around 12:30 this afternoon on the 700 block of hertford road. police say the suspect forced his way in after knocking on the door injuring the 81-year-old homeowner in the process. chad pradelli is fathering details at the scene and he'll have the late nest a live report tonight at 6:00. >> olympic swimmer ryan lochte has apologized for his behavior surrounding a robbery investigation at the summer games in rio de janeiro. lochte took to instagram today to say he should have been more careful and candid when describing what happened earlier this week after a night of partying with his teammates. lochte and three other swimmers could face sanctions from u.s.a. swimming and the u.s. oc. two of those swimmers are back in the united states after being held for questioning in brazil.

here for probably 30 years and crossing in one wooden bridge for the last dozen of those, this is a real pleasure to have this bridge opened. >> it was scary. yeah, you'd have to ride fast to not be the one that fell through the cracks. >> reporter: the hope is that the new four span bridge enhances bicycle and pedestrian travel and provides a safer regional connection to the circuit trails which is a vast regional trail network composed of hundreds of miles of interconnected trails. >> we've been waiting all summer. every time we were riding the valley forge trail we would take our bikes over, not done yet and turn around and we were thrilled to find out today it was open so on the inaugural day here we are. >> reporter: all right, so back out live, the bridge now opened for everyone to enjoy. the price tag a little over $9 million. if you were wondering about the name of the bridge, well that was voted on in 2013 and it's actually named after major general john sullivan. he was actually charged by george washington general

>> a second person has died in a crash involving two commuter buses in new jersey. officials say one new jersey transit bus carrying only the driver slammed into another bus around 6:00 a.m. in newark. the driver of the bus with no passengers died at the scene. a female passenger on the other bus died later this afternoon. 17 others were hurt.

investigators are trying to determine if the driver who died ran a red light. >> all right. turning to health check tonight the cdc is now advising pregnant women to avoid another area in florida. >> this comes after officials have confirmed five cases of locally spread zika all connected to an area in miami beach. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman at the "action news" big board with the details. hi, ali. >> hi, guys. this is something who work in hospitality and tourism in florida had been dreading. the governor says just as they did in wynnewood they're working to control mosquitos and the zika virus in miami beach. the cdc announces pregnant women should avoid a second spot in south florida. this time it's inside the touristy hot spot miami beach. officials in florida say five people have been infected with zika virus spread by local mosquitos there. a one and a half mile area has been identified as the infection zone: the governor

says officials are testing people and working to control mosquitos. the first area known to have local transmission called wynnewood is now shrinking. several more blocks have been cleared. congress has still not passed a budget to fight zika. governor rick scott has again asked for those federal funds. he's requesting 5,000 more testing supplies, more lab personnel and 10,000 prevention kits for pregnant women. >> we want to do all we can to assure florida remains safe for our visitors on your families. >> reporter: free zika assessment and testing will now be offered to all pregnant women within the entire state of florida. mosquito spraying will have to stick to the ground by miami beach. there's too many highrises for aerial spraying. education will also continue reminding residents to protect themselves. >> we have to do our part to wear bug spray and dump

standing water. penn medicine is part of a test. they've enrolled 15 volunteers. as for whether zika will spread here, it could. we have the mosquitos that can carry the virus but most experts agree it's unlikely we'll see widespread transmission. still, people should do their best to avoid mosquito bites. and officials are also advising pregnant women and their partners to consider avoiding nonessential travel to the entire miami dade county. they say they would rather err on the side of caution. now, also, if you are pregnant and you visitd that wynnewood area any time after june 15th or the miami beach area any time after july 14th, you should let your doctor know. and we have more information on 6abc.com. rick and sharrie. >> all right, thank you, ali. new orleans will play host to next year's nba all-star game. the league made the announcement today. charlotte north carolina was originally chosen to host the

as well in lancaster. look at the dewpoints it's the level of moisture in the atmosphere. dewpoint numbers aren't terribly bad, just moderately humid from the i-95 corridor and points to the north and west but we're still stuck in the 70's the up ar upper 60's ag the coastline and pressing into dover because you're tapping into a south or serial wind at this hour it's bringing in more moisture off of the atlantic. here's satellite6 along with action radar. it's dry and quiet from new england across the midatlantic region as well. if you look off to the west we're finding a lot of activity. you look across the northern plains we've got some moisture that's starting to develop. this will be our cold front. it will be working its way eastward as we get into the second half of our weekend and with that comes the threat of some strong showers and storms but in the wake of that a nice change and a nice recovery head our way. the call from accuweather for the rest of tonight it's still pretty humid underneath a mostly clear sky dropping down to 72 in philadelphia, 65 in allentown, 71 in cape may, 66 in toms river and 64 degrees

>> ♪ >> "action news" continues with meteorologist add joseph, jaime apody rick williams and monica malpass. >> monica is off. sharrie williams is joining us tonight. here's what's happening on "action news" this evening. firefighters are gaining ground on that wildfire that's burning out of control in southern california. it's killing more people than gun violence philadelphia right now. what the city is doing to prevent overdose deaths from a powerful drug. also an armed thief storms into a local watering hole demanding everything and anything with value. do you recognize this man? >> southern california's blue cut wildfire continues to char the landscape and light up the sky. more than 35,000 acres of land are destroyed. the fire itself so big that

nasa could take a picture of it from space. >> well, as it stands right now 96 homes and more than 200 other buildings have been destroyed. however, firefighters on the front lines are making headway. >> abc's lauren lyster has the latest tonight. >> reporter: today crews making progress on a wildfire that overnight continued to spread in the california dessert. the tens of thousands of residents ordered to evacuate still being kept from their homes. vehicles destroyed, burned out debris left in the communities they fled. the ski town of right wood evacuated but only half of the residents heeded the warning. >> my husband wouldn't go. he's the basic kind that says i want to protect the house. i want to stay here. >> reporter: 37,000 acres have been charred since the blue cut fire ignited tuesday. more than 50 square miles. helicopters have been working round the which, to halt the flames and make sure they stay put out.

on the ground, responders have made significant progress cutting back the bone dry brush. >> we don't like losing homes and it's challenging when we're up against the fine it's burning so aggressively. >> reporter: some residents have been allowed back in their homes but evacuation orders remain for thousands and according to fire officials the owners of at least 96 homes will be returning to damage like this. lauren lyster abc news california. >> thank you lauren. we now know a natural gas leak caused a deadly explosion and fire at a maryland apartment building last week. federal investigators released their new finding this morning and they've determined the explosion happened in a mechanical room but they don't know what led up to it. the fire then consumed two buildings. police have identified three of the seven victims who were killed. >> the u.s. scrambled fighter aircraft to protect american forces and allies in northeastern syrian cities while that city was under attack.

officials say syrian government planes were battling syrian kurds in that area. the u.s. is increasing air patrols there and has warned the standing syrian regime that it will defend coalition troops if they are threatened. u.s. forces were in the area training and advising syrian democratic forces and no one was hurt. well, the obama administration expects to mark a major milestone in the coming weeks. admitting more than 10,000 syrian refugees into the u.s. within the 2016 fiscal year. a state department official says the administration can and likely will accept more than 10,000 applicants as the goal is not a sealing. david muir will have more on today's top headlines around the world including the continuing fire fight in southern california. you can watch that following "action news" at 6:00. >> in other news tonight philadelphia health officials say the city's synthetic

opioid drug epidemic is getting much worse. the drug that concerns them the most is called fentanyl. city health officials updated the public today on the scope of the problem. more than 700 people died from the drug last year up from 460 in 2013. fender until already accounts for about 40 percent of overdoses. officials say people don't realize how poet tender it can be the. >> people are buying this drug from street dealers and as commissioner evans said probably most of the time they think they're buying heroin because it is very similar in its effects. >> officials are using outreach programs in high use areas of philadelphia to get people into treatment programs. the city fire department's 133 first responder teams carry narcan a drug that can reverse the effects of an overdose. >> a delaware apartment complex became an active crime scene when two men were shot. once the sun came up

detectives scoured the grounds of the prides port apartments in newark for clues. they tell "action news" a 19-year-old man an 20-year-old man was slot around 4:00 a.m. both were taken to the hospital for treatment. it's still unclear why the men were shot or who shot them. from our new jersey news room now camden county health officials are warning residents in haddon township to stay alert after a bat found in man's home tested positive for rabies. the homeowner found the animal inside of his residence august 10th. it was taken away by animal control and tested. the man's family was advised to seek treatment for possible exposure. officials are asking residents to contact them at (856)374-6370 if they believe an animal is showing signs of being sick. >> the lehigh valley substitute teacher charged with having sex with a student in a cemetery has pled guilty to the crime.

49-year-old kelly auld ringer admitted. she told authorities her relationship with the teen started the previous fall. she'll be sentenced in december. dramatic surveillance video captured a bar robbery in hunting park. this happened during the early morning hours on wednesday inside of frank's place bar on north 15th street. the suspect pulled out a handgun and pointed it at everyone. he took cash from several people stole one woman's purse and then ran off. if you have any information on the crime, you're asked to call philadelphia police. a woman was hit by a car while walking in the bala cynwyd shopping center along city avenue this evening. happened just outside of the olive garden restaurant. the woman was put on a stretcher and loaded into a waiting ambulance. her injuries are said to be minor fortunately. the driver did stay on the scene. not clear if he'll face charges. >> time to check on the roads on this friday.

>> a rescue helicopter took two men to safety after the plane they were flying crashed in the florida everglades. the plane landed around noon today on its belly in the marsh land. both men appear to be okay. officials say before landing the pilot was able to make an emergency call. seven homes in all were damaged when a six alarm fire broke out yesterday in staten island. two people were hurt one seriously. 19 firefighters suffered from heat exhaustion. more than 40 people were left homeless. no word yet on what caused this fire. >> members of law enforcement came together in miami today to honor john timoney. he directed miami's police department from 2003 to 2010 and he was philadelphia's police commissioner from 1998
