news" this noon is the strong earthquake that has now killed at least 73 people in italy. lots of homes and buildings collapsed weapon the quake struck overnight. three tiny towns in central italy are the hardest hit and rescue workers are racing to dig out survivors with bulldozers and their own hands. >> reporter: it lasted just seconds but the emotional impact will be felt for a lifetime. the shock seen on the faces of those that lived through it. right now the desperate race against the clock to find people trapped underneath debris. a rescuer tries to calm this woman asking her if she with breathe after pleading with her to remain calm. people bloody covered in dust from debris and destruction everywhere. this person pulled out alive on a stretcher by rescuers, those that experienced the violent tremors are sharing the

horrifying moments. >> more than everything, it was the sensation of the ground beneath your feet moving and having no clue what to do. >> the 6.2 magnitude quake struck after 3:30 in the morning and puts the epicenter northeast of rome. the tremors felt across a vast area of the country. >> we are alive because we escaped from the window. >> the aftermath seen here, walls ripped from homes and chuf chunks of cement blanketing roadways and the italian prime minister vowing to rebuild. >> we come together, so no family, city or hamlet will be left alone. >> reporter: this is the second earthquake in seven years to hit this region of italy. in 2009, the quake killed 300 people and demolished towns.

channel 6 "action news." now, to breaking news from afghanistan where a college campus is under attack. explosions and gun fire were reported at the american university in kabul. the school has no affiliation with the u.s., it's a campus that students can learn in an american style curriculum. police say an intruder has died after being shot while breaking into his ex-girlfriend's house in philadelphia. now investigators believe they know who fired the gun. annie mccormick joins us live with new information. >> reporter: sarah, homicide detectives are trying to piece this case together, the missing piece is the man that shot the intruder at this hour, they are asking him to come in for questioning. just after midnight officers received 911 calls of a break-in, and then a shooting at a home at the 800 block of north

marcos street. and they found the man shot in the chest and he was transferred to the hospital where he died. the shooting victim tried breaking into his ex-girlfriend's home multiple times that flight and she and her new boyfriend tried to keep him out. but he crawled through an upstairs window and once inside he got into an altercation with the couple. homicide detectives are looking for the alleged shooter. >> he knows we know who he is and the best thing to do is come in and tell his story. maybe he will be arrested or maybe he won't. he needs to come in and tell us his side of the story or it looks bad for him. >> they believe they know who the shooter is and not releasing his name. but to us he is a 28-year-old man. there were two children inside of the home, however they were not injured and both children of

suit jacket indoors because it's warming up and some cumulous clouds beginning to pop and looking at satellite a lack of real cloud cover, and boy when the sun breaks out you do feel the warmth. temperatures climbing in the 80s, 81 in philadelphia and 81 in allentown and down the shore, similar number, 80 in cape may and 82 in atlantic city. due points are fairly comfortable in most spots, we are looking at them creeping up but it's not terribly humid. it gets more humid in the state of delaware and the shore. a 69 degree reading in cape may. today's high in philadelphia is 87 degrees, above the average high for 84 for this date. off the record of 93 and the overnight low is 68 getting down to about average. and if you head to the

ground forces from turkey were added to chase forces away from the border. the fighting is happening as vice president, joe biden, visits turkey with a goal of smoothing relations with the u.s. turkey has blamed a cleric living in pennsylvania for orchestrating the violent coup attempt last month. the countries are at odds on whether the cleric should be extradited to face charges.

and a hack attack targeting "the new york times" and its reporters, they are looking into whether russian intelligence agencies are responsible. there is no evidence that it was successful. the news comes as federal authorities continue to investigate a breach in the democratic national committee and this led to the posting of embarrassing emails. >> an out of control taxi jumped a curb on a busy sidewalk in san francisco, the cab driver and two men working at a shoe shine stand are now in critical condition. it crashed just feet away from her jewelry stand. >> i saw is crash and the man fell up in the air like something out of a movie, unbelievable. he laid down on the ground and was not moving. >> the cab driver stumbled out of the car and collapsed after the crash that remains under investigation. blankses rushed at least 30

people to hospital after they overdosed on heroin in cincinnati, ohio within hours last night. each person was revived with narcan, they are looking to see if they are connected with the same potent batch. new zika cases in florida are sending health officials to find the source of the virus. they are investigating five new cases in two counties, four in the miami beach area and one in tampa. according to governor, rick scott, these are locally transmitted cases and the cdc says there are 2200 cases reported in the u.s. as of last wednesday. federal and local law enforcement pull their skills to the test in montgomery county. bomb units and s.w.a.t. teams took to the schuylkill river in search of terrorist suspects on barbados island in norristown, it's a real life scenario but

a new high school in philadelphia's kensington section is preparing for the first day of classes. the academy will help them work on scholarships. it's to prepare them for success beyond high school for college, the military or a more vocational path. all right david murphy is back with a check of the

accuweather forecast and it's another nice one. >> a tad bit humor and stormtracker 6 live double scan shows we are dry across the region and as we take a look outside we have plenty of sunshine pouring down the beach in atlantic city. a few with umbrellas up and a few of you enjoying the water with a low risk of rip currents and we have nice conditions in the water with temperatures in the 70s. 81 is your current temperature in philadelphia and dew point at 60 border line humidity, it's not too bad. you start working out these numbers come up and you'll sweat. winds turn out of the west at 7 miles per hour. they are not all that strong today. temperatures across the region, 81 in allentown, philadelphia, trenton, millville and dipping to 79 in cape may as the sea breeze kicks in, there is a lack of real significant cloud cover, just fair weather cumulous stuff. and up in the lehigh valley sunny and warm and high of 87

degrees and a tad humid. down the shore a great beach day, 82 is your high and mostly sunny and nice. maybe more humid along the beach but it doesn't feel too bad. ocean temperature is 74 degrees and a low risk of rip currents not a bad day to get in the water as long as you have a lifeguard looking out for you. a high today of 87, certainly warm enough to do some sweating and not all that sweaty. winds southwest 6 to 9 miles per hour. not quite as cool tonight but fairly cool and comfortable. down to 68 degrees under mainly clear skies and the light wind profile. tomorrow things change a bit. a cold front coming in from the west and ahead of it the southerly flow increases our humidity and bumps the number to 90 degrees, we'll go 89 and it will feel sticky and the front in the northern and western suburbs has a chance of of producing a rumble of thunder friday night.

and the big story on friday is highs back in the 90s and humidity even higher. on to the tropics we go, two areas of concern. this propcal wave they are investigating now, hurricane hunter aircraft and we have tropical storm gaston out there to the west of west african coast. lets talk about this guy, this has now a 60% chance of developing into a tropical storm, at some point over the next couple of days and you take that out five days, it's an 80% chance and the hurricane hunter aircraft is beginning to detect in squalls winds strong enough to make it a tropical storm. it might happen this afternoon. the bigger concern comes later in the week and weekend and monday into southern florida as most of our spaghetti plot models takes this storm into the bahamas and perhaps angling

toward miami and key west, florida. if you have plans to head to southern florida and even orlando, keep an eye on this. it will produce a lot of rain and if a tropical storm you'll looked potentially darthing wind gusts. gaston looks to pop up to hurricane one status and it looks like it will curve up to the north before it has a chance to get to bermuda and it could be a category two. your exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast, 87 degrees and sunny and warmer, some of you did not get the reference but some of you did. not too humid today and a bit more humid tomorrow and high of 89. friday a high of 93 and more humid and a chance of a spotty shower or thunderstorm especially in the afternoon and evening, a lot of areas probably won't see that though. it does look like a weak front. the evidence of the weak front comes on saturday and sunday and the temperature doesn't get knocked down far like it would as a stronger front.

we begin at 12:30 with breaking news from kabul, afghanistan as officials respond to an attack at american university of afghanistan. the president says that militants have attacked the campus at the capital. it's an afghan university that teaches an american style curriculum. they heard explosions and gun fire, but we are waiting for more details on attack.

now to the developing story we are following out of italy. the death toll from an earthquake that hit overnight has gone up to 73 and images like these keep coming in. a young girl was carried from the rubble to safety and even a dog was carefully taken away from his collapsed home. the magnitude 6.2 hit a central italian town at 3:30 in the morning. the historic center of the town is reduced to rubble and the search continues to find people that are trapped but still alive. they are set up tent city around the area to care for the thousands of people now left homeless. >> this morning pope francis led people in prayer for the earthquake victims and set aside his usual catechism lesson for pilgrams at saint mark's square. we'll continue to follow the aftermath and earthquake and bring you
