children's summer camp. meantime friday night rick is off charry williams joining us. we're following vandalism investigation for you tonight in new jersey. >> new jersey correspondent nora muchanic is live for us in lakewood tonight where vandals have hit twice in less than two months there, nora. >> reporter: sharrie, monica lakewood is home to a large orthodox community where many are survivors or had family killed in the holocaust. so, to see symbols like the swastika painted on a playground residents are deeply offended. public works crews are scrubbing off and covering over a series of swastikas and other graffiti spray painted at a private playground off second street in lakewood used by a jewish summer camp. the mayor is calling the vandals cowards. >> this is very symbolic to hate and to eradicating the jewish community. that's what happened in germany, that's what happened in nazi germany and poland and that's what the sim assemblywoman here to say as

well we want you out of here. obviously people are trying to intimidate those of us who live in town. lakewood is predominantly an orthodox community. >> the contrast of the children who are so innocent with the message that's so full of hate i think speaks volumes for itself. >> reporter: the phrase hiel hitler was sprayed on on a slide. >> how much do you think these people know about the holocaust. >> it's disgusting. it's really not called for at all. i mean, it's 2016 people. everybody get along. >> reporter: police say they discovered at least two discarded spray painter cans here on the playground and they're having them analyzed to see if they can come up with fingerprints. the graffiti was discovered thursday afternoon by children playing here. police don't know if it was teens or adults who sprayed the hateful messages but they are taking the investigation seriously. >> this is the second incident we've had since july of this

year. we don't know if either event are related but we'll do our best to find out. >> reporter: back live now when they are identified the vandals face bias criminal charges that come with enhanced penalties upon conviction. live in lakewood, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> nora, thank you. a p girl was found -- a pennsylvania girl was found safe and sound after police say she was abducted by her father. an amber alert for three-year-old eva byrne was issued this morning. police sent hours trying to find her and her father 24-year-old robert byrne. early this afternoon the pair was spotted right after they came out of the lincoln tunnel in manhattan by shun on the street. photos from our sister station in new york show the girl appears to be okay being held there by that police officer. we are still working to find out what prompted this alleged kidnapping. >> the search for a shooter continues tonight in camden as an eight-year-old girl clings to her life in a hospital.

she was caught in the crossfire of a gun battle wednesday night. now the reward for information leading to those responsible has nearly doubled. "action news" reporter jeanette reyes is live for us now in camden where she spoke to a member of the girl's family. jeanette, what's the family saying today? >> i spoke with the parents both the mother and the father very briefly earlier this morning. the mother was just too distraught to say much but the father said they were rushing back to the hospital to be by their daughter's side. i can tell you here at the scene police have been here for the last 48 hours passing out fliers and i just learned today from the police chief that this alley here they believe now that that is where the shooter was when he fired his weapon. >> family is hurt bad but the community's upset because we losing a lot of our children to this violence around here and it's senseless. >> reporter: gabrielle carter is still fighting for her life two days after being caught in crossfire and shot in the head. she remains in critical condition at cooper university hospital.

her uncle and others in the community are also in a fight of their own for justice to be served. >> if you know something, step up. we losing our children. you know, what's holding us in is not going to help our children. our children is the future so we need help with this. >> reporter: police chief scott thompson says the community has remained mostly tight lipped despite public and repeated pleas for information. >> it's been difficult for us to get additional information from the community. we're hoping to incentivize this. >> reporter: to help encourage potential witnesses and others with information the founder of gaby's school camden community charter school donated $5,000 to the original reward bringing it up to $11,000. it's for anyone with information on the shooter that leads to an arrest and conviction. >> this is a call to action is what this is. this could have happened in any section of our city to any child especially considering that this individual is out on the streets. >> reporter: and coming back

out live to us, this surveillance camera that you're looking at right now it's mounted on a building literally just yards away from where the shooting happened and police tell me this is crucial in the investigation. however, they are not going to release it unless they absolutely have to but again, they are pleading with the community, someone please speak up so that they can break this case. reporting live in camden, jeanette reyes, channel6 "action news." back inside to you. >> thank you jeanette. a man and woman are wanted for a pickpocket theft in bensalem township. this surveillance video was taken on wednesday in the chick-fil-a restaurant on horizon boulevard. police say the woman served as a lookout while the man positioned himself behind another woman and her children. the man then stole that woman's wallet from her purse hanging from the back of a chair. if you recognize the couple, please contact bensalem police. >> turning to the forecast now, mother nature is churning up the heat heading into the weekend. taking a live look down the shore here, this is atlantic city. beautiful shot though from the

distance. if you're headed to the beach to cool off stay alert. while in the ocean, officials are warning of dangerous rip currents off the coast of new jersey because of a system out in the atlantic ocean. for more on accuweather we go to meteorologist cecily tynan who has the latest. hi, cecily. >> hi, sharrie. we had a nice break from the heat and humidity earlier this week. tuesday the high was only 83 but we have been gradually warming up. today's high so far 92 degrees, that's 8 degrees above normal. the heat index right now just slightly above that, 93, but the heat index is higher down to the south. washington, d.c. 99, richmond, virginia, it feels like 105. the good news the humidity is going to be dropping so tomorrow the heat index really not a factor. it will be warm, it will be dry but this will be a factor over the weekend. this is tropical storm gaston. it's 18 miles away from us but this system is strengthening in the central atlantic. by monday it likely will be a category two hurricane. it's a fish storm. it's no threat to land but

marisa. >> hi, monica and sharrie. we're dealing with a pretty typical friday afternoon summer commute. we have a lot of volume in the area. schuylkill expressway bigger delay on the eastbound lanes taking about 33 minutes to go from the blue route town to the vine. now we have an incident to tell you about on the pennsylvania turnpike westbound. this is at fort washington. taking out a lane involving several vehicles so keep that that in mind if you're on the turnpike and a slow down on the vine street expressway. these are eastbound lanes heading up towards 95. once you jump off the schuylkill expressway taking about 10 minutes to do that commute. moving right along and showing what the atlantic city expressway is looking like if you're heading down to the shore this weekend. this is right at creek road. you can see cars not moving too badly here but as you make your way closer to the shore you can see we start to slow down on the atlantic city expressway and certainly as you jump onto the garden state parkway you can expect to tap the brakes. that ben franklin bridge looking clear in both directions. keep an eye on things and bring you an update in the next half hour. back to you monica and sharrie. >> autumn thank you. still to come on "action

>> officials are trying to figure out what led to a bizarre scare on the tarmac in omaha, nebraska. police it started in front of the city airport that plan was screaming that people were trying to kill him. the man then ran through the parking garage jumped a fence onto the tarmac shed his clothing and highjacked a truck that was running. the chase continued until the man ran that truck head on into the nose of a packed plane parked at the gate. two people on board were hurt as was the suspect. that's him still screaming. the cause of his behavior is unclear. aftershocks continue to strike a small town in central italy already devastated by that strong earthquake earlier this week.

the 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck amatrice early wednesday morning. since then aftershocks have damaged key roads in the town making rescue efforts more difficult. at least 267 people were killed in the quake. >> there are calls for the resignation of maine's governor after he left a controversial voice message for a state representative who allegedly called haim racist. >> i want you to prove that i'm a racist you beep. i will spend my life helping black people and you little son of a (bleep) so full of (bleep). i need to you -- i want you to record this and make it public because i'm after you. thank you. >> well, governor paul lepage later told reporters he wished it were 1825 and he could challenge state representative drew gattine to a dual. gattine responded with caution. >> it sounded like somebody who was capable of -- of

injuring me and violence. i'm going to be careful. >> governor lepage issued an apology. lepage is one of several officials who republican presidential nominee donald trump has tapped to join his administration. health check the food and drug administration is now recommending all blood donations in the u.s. be screened for the zika virus. >> health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us now with the details on this. hi, ali. >> hi, guys, yeah, this is already happening in zika affected areas such as in florida and puerto rico but now the fda has expanded the guidelines. officials say the change is due to the uncertainty of the virus and more cases of zika. there are 42 locally spread cases in florida but more than 2200 travel related cases across the u.s. states will start phasing in the screening. no word on when this will happen. the biggest concern is for pregnant women. zika is cause devastating birth defects. meanwhile the governor of florida rick scott host add

round table discussion today in miami beach. lawmakers, business and community leaders were there. right now there are two areas with active zika transmission in florida. that's in wynnewood and part of miami beach. two other counties are also under surveillance. with heavy rain expected this weekend, governor scott is reminding everyone to help get rid of standing water. >> where we're seeing mosquitos we're seeing standing water. there's a direct correlation. so if everybody in the state can focus on getting rid of the standing water then wire going -- we're going to do well. >> where he saw a lot of students heading off to college many very happy about it like this young man here. but we also saw some parents shedding a few tears. don't worry, it is completely normal. psychologists say sending kids off to college can create some real separation anxiety and feelings of loss for parents. while it may be tempting to call several times a day, experts say try to practice

some detachment. it will be better for you and it allows your child to gain more independent but it will take some patience. >> it's going to pass. we get better at anything we practice so if we practice being apart from one another without trying to solve that too much in the early going we are going to get used to it. >> the good news for parents becoming empty nesters, research shows the space can strengthen your marriage. for single parents scott bay recommends picking up new hobbies and reconnecting with friends. he also says it's helpful for all parents to have a plan with their kids about how often they'll check in and of course what to do in case of an emergency. sharrie. >> yeah, some good advice. all right, ali, thank you. officials in atlantic county are trying to find a home for an injured sea turtle rescued from the ocean. this female log gary head was spotted yesterday near the oyster creek nuclear plant. she had apparently been hit by a boat and her rear flippers may be paralyzed.

through with very little moisture just a few spotty showers and now let's open the door for a dry weekend. so, tonight for your friday night if you're heading out the humidity will be dropping so more comfortable than last night, clear skies. it will be warm, though, 73 in philadelphia, allentown 64, cape may 73 and wilmington 71. tomorrow the weekend kickoff looking really nice down the shore. 83 degrees. you will be getting a sea breeze. plenty of sunshine. the poconos 83 as well, low humidity, gorgeous. here in philadelphia the humidity will be low but it's just going to be as hot as today with a high of 92 degrees but with dewpoints around 60, it will feel more comfortable. i talked about tropical storm gaston. that's one system in the atlantic. we also have this tropical wave. now, this is visible satellite and the actual center of circulation is north of cuba, but the clouds, all the convection to the thunderstorms east of the send. this is a very lopsided storm. it's still very unorganized

but it looks like that will continue to push to the northwest and once it gets past the florida straits into the gulf of mexico, there's a chance that this will become tropical storm hermine. the national hurricane center giving a 60 percent chance that would happen so if you are going to be heading to pensacola or tampa or anyplace in between early next week, you want to keep an eye on that storm. that could bring some flooding rains and a lot of problems. back at home, though, we've just got heat. for the weekend, the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow it will be hot but not humid. 92 degrees. sunday 90 but feeling a little less comfortable with the dewpoints increasing. on monday it's hot, it's muggy, 92 degrees. the heat wave continues tuesday and wednesday, also with the possibility of some thunderstorms as we close out august, the hottest on record but there are changes for the beginning of september. adam will talk about that in the accuweather 7-day forecast. guys. >> thank you, cecily. and there's much more to come on our next half hour of "action news" at 5:00 it's been more than a week since a

video could reveal even more about the deadly encounter. abc's lauren lyster is following the developments and joins us live from los angeles now. lauren. >> reporter: good evening, monica and sharrie. you know, that new witness video could help police piece together what seemingly started as a simple traffic violation but ended in tragedy. this cell phone video appears to show a portion of the pursuit that ended with a state trooper shooting and killing an unarmed deaf driver. 29-year-old daniel harris. in this newly obtained video you can see what appears to be harris' blue volvo stopped perpendicular to the road. a trooper is standing outside the car suddenly the driver reverses and pulls away. the trooper following. the chase ends tragically after at least 7 miles in all just feet from harris' charlotte north carolina home. >> stopped over here and then few seconds later i heard a gun shot. >> reporter: police have said they were trying to pull the deaf man over for speeding saying he didn't stop until

making it home and getting out of his car. authorities say there was a brief encounter and harris a husband and father is killed by a single gun shot fired by trooper jermaine saunders. >> been involved in a shooting. >> reporter: residents suggest harris may have been using sign language with officers. his brother also deaf say police aren't trained enough in dealing with the hearing impaired. >> if the officer had known that he was deaf, it would have ended differently. >> reporter: residents holding a vigil writing justice for daniel on his street and demanding answers. >> i can't understand why it happened the way it happened. you know, why did you have to kill him? >> reporter: investigators have been searching through police dashboard and body camera video to find out why the deaf man was shot to death. abc's charlotte affiliate learning they plan to review this latest cell phone video as potential evidence. in los angeles i'm lauren lyster channel6 "action news. monica. >> thank you lauren.

we have an update from our delaware news room now, a fire that forced a family onto the street has been ruled accidental. six people were able to escape this burning house on state street this morning about 6 o'clock. investigators have since determined the flames sparked inside a laundry room because of faulty electrical wiring in the wall. the blaze caused an estimated $20,000 damage. >> also in delaware, a mysterious death is under investigation in wilmington where a plan's body was discovered hanging upside down on a fence today. some people noticed the body in a parking lot when they arrived to work on the 500 block of market street this morning. police say it appears the man's shorts got caught when he tried to climb or jump the fence and they do not think he was the victim of a crime. investigators are waiting for the results of an autopsy. a homeless man was shot to death on a chester county street today. police are still looking for his killer.

they say the victim is originally from pottstown but he was gunned down on the sick hundred block of diamond al flee coatesville where he often stays at homeless shelters. detectives are not sure of a motive. >> a member avenue local american legion law is recovering from an assault and robbery tonight. his attackers are still out there. the victim was taking out the trash at the american leach post here in tacony this morning when two men punched him and stole a box containing $300. the suspects took off through a side door. the victim was taken to the hospital to be treated forehead injuries but he is expected to be okay. politics now both presidential candidates are continuing to exchange racially charged accusations. democratic nominee hillary clinton unleashed a new ad that's playing in swing states. the ad features republican donald trumply trying appeal to african-american voters alongside images of white trump supporters shoving protestors. and today trump released a video on instagram reminding

voters that clinton faced criticism for making racist remarks in the 1990's. only vice presidential candidate tim kaine was actually on the campaign trail today. >> start dividing people up against one another, name calling, then all of a sudden you find you can't solve your problem. >> the election is 73 days away and the white house says president obama is already focused on the transition. >> the new jersey communities hit hardest by hurricane sandy in 2012 will be getting some of the money back that they spent cleaning up after that storm. governor chris christie was in toms river this afternoon to announce a match program with the federal emergency management agency or fema. starting monday, local governments in nine counties will get 10 percent of the money back that they spent on debris removal and other emergency measures. there is about $42 million in all to be handed out. toms river, for example, qualifies for at least

$2 million. faculty at all 14 of pennsylvania's state universities are one step closer to a possible strike. the union has scheduled a vote on weather whether to authorize that strike. the vote is planned for september 7th. faculty members have been working without al contract for more than a year and the union does not believe negotiations have been fair. despite the ongoing conflict, classes will start on time monday. there are 105,000 students in the state university system. >> well, the college students are back in town in radnor. today more than 400 freshmen unpacked their boxes and decorated their dorm rooms at cabrini university. they had some help from parents, staff and other student volunteers. the school was formally known as cabrini college but it has officially become a university this year after expanding academic programs and welcoming more students. cabrini has made a lot of changes on campus to reflect its new status.

>> several other universities in our area were busy with move ins today as well. we found excitement among the teens leaving home but some nervousness among parents who have to let go. >> yeah, "action news" reporter katherine scott checked out the mood at two local campuses. >> reporter: the cars pull up, the carts roll in. more than 1200 new freshmen arrived at saint joseph's university this weekend. and these new hawks are ready to fly. >> i'm really excited to start. my grandmom went here. some of my family. everyone seems so nice. i feel really welcome. >> her mother really wanted her to come here. [laughter] >> i really what happened her to come here. i want to come. >> she hid her suitcase. >> reporter: vans pickup trucks whatever the vehicle they were filled to the brim and while many families provided muscle and moral support, student volunteers were also there to do the same. >> they let you know the community is here for you, the kids are here for you. if i ever see any of these kids on campus i'm going say hi, i'm going to ask them how

america music festival will begin this weekend. on sunday morning two lanes of eakins oval in front of the art museum will shut down. the inner lanes of the ben franklin parkway between 20th street and the oval will close next wednesday and more closures will take effect throughout the week. roads will stay closed until tuesday september 6. you can find a full list on 6abc.com. >> the federal government wants to for identification lower speeds on truck and bus drivers. the new proposal was introduced today. it would be a nationwide limit electronically capping speeds with a device on newly made vehicles that weigh more than 26,000 pounds. regulators are considering a cap of 60, 65 or 68 miles per hour. the national highway traffic safety administration says the change would greatly reduce the more than 1,000 fatal crashes involving heavy trucks every year. >> time to check on the traffic scene. speaking of trucks right now. >> all right, autumn marisa standing by with the update

>> police are still looking for the person who killed these two nuns in mississippi. they were found stabbed to death yesterday in the home they shared. police said there were signs of a break in. their car was also found abandoned a mile weigh from the home. police say the motive is still not known and they have not released details about any suspects. today marks one year since two virginia journalists were fatally shot during a live television broadcast. 24-year-old alison parker and 27-year-old adam ward were killed by a former coworker who later turned that weapon on himself. this morning the television station in roanoke virginia held a moment of silence to honor those two victims. >> some of the ocean's most beautiful creatures will be kept safe under a new order from president obama. he just expanded a marine

chirico joins us live at the scene with the latest developments. jeff. >> reporter: monica, police are inside collecting evidence in that home where they say the couple was killed. charged in their death is 28-year-old ryan coles, their son. now, this is a photo that we obtained his facebook page. chopper6 was over the scene this afternoon. a family member found edward and rose marie coles dead inside after coming to check on them when he was unable to reach them yesterday. both were in their 50's. police say coles was home when police arrived and he was taken into custody without incident. a neighbor just spoke with me a few moments ago and says he has had conversations with ryan coles several times over the summer while he walked his dog and he just thought something didn't seem right. >> he just seemed a little bit detached, maybe a little bit depressed. >> we really don't know that. the impression i had was like
