making news in america this morning, breaking news as one of the country's busiest airports is thrown into chaos. overnight reports of shots fired brought l.a.x. to a standstill with some passengers even running out onto the tarmac. this morning police are giving the all clear. happening right now tracking the tropics with several storms on the move right now, the new tropical storm watch just issued by the national weather service and heavy rain elsewhere creating all sorts of problems. it was a close call for passengers on board this flight after the engine seemed to just blow apart. oxygen masks deployed as the pilot safely completed an emergency landing. hear what the airline is saying. and it was ladies night at the mtv music awards.

britney spears and beyonce taking the stage and some wild fashion ahead. a good monday morning. we begin with breaking news from los angeles. it was a travel nightmare at l.a.x. >> several terminals evacuated. incoming flights stopped and traffic into that airport a standstill. all this as a precaution we're told after there were reports of gunfire. it turns out those reports were false. but the damage done. >> it was chaotic. we got off the plane and were exiting and saw just a mob, a crowd running towards us. >> reporter: these frantic scenes at the nation's second busiest airport, passengers running in all directions, many onto the tarmac at l.a.x. after reports of shots fired. abc's matt gutman was there as it unfolded. >> pretty eerie site to see the loop so packed with traffic

completely empty. lots of people scattering. they closed down a couple of terminals and you see everywhere people having to hoof it to try to get where they're going even out of this airport. pretty chaotic here and pretty scary here. >> reporter: the scare forced the faa to call for a ground stop. all flights west of the mississippi hailed at their origin. passengers in some terminals had to be rescreened causing long lines. finally flights resuming after about two hours. the reports of gunshots turned out to be false. instead spurred by loud noises. police looking into the source. a man in a zorro costume deta detained. still not clear if he was connected to the incident. he talked to our abc station. >> they didn't arrest me. they explained to me crazy stuff happens in the airport and within two or three minutes it was over. >> reporter: the incident coming exactly two weeks after chaos erupted at new york's jfk airport. reports of gunfire outside a

security check point there sent people running in panic and the governor ordered an investigation into the police response. zorro costume only in los angeles. normal operations resumed at l.a.x. one of the busiest airports. you can imagine there will be a ripple effect today in air travel. >> a lot of people at l.a.x. this morning. >> yeah. the other big story that we're following, tracking several active tropical storm systems. >> so hurricane gaston is getting stronger but staying east of bermuda. a new depression is south of key west and headed northward in the gulf. another depression appears to be headed for the outer banks of north carolina and a tropical storm watch in effect. >> the weather deteriorating in key west as tropical depression nine moves closer with wind, rain, lightning, time lapsed video and it's expected to get stronger but where it is headed, well, nobody is really sure right now. more now from abc's rob marciano. >> the forecast track for td

nine is for it to become a tropical storm and wednesday, thursday go into florida but low confidence on the track and intensity. we'll have to watch it closely. >> the other troop cal depression, the one that's heading up the atlantic coast is expected to become a tropical storm later on today. there's also extreme weather in the midwest including flooding in the cincinnati area. heavy rain closed roads and subamericaed cars but no injuries reported. three to five inches fell in less than three hours. breaking a 42-year-old record. thousands of people were without power last night and a lightning strike on its antenna knocked out our affiliate there in cincinnati off the air for a little while. there were funnel clouds south of detroit yesterday and a tornado or two may have touched down but the tornadoes were not confirmed by the national weather service. there were no injuries and the only damage reported to trees and crops. officials said the funnel clouds were very weak circulations. it's just about ten weeks until election day and donald

trump appears to be ready to set the record straight amid questions about his immigration policy. >> and he's doing so by announcing that a major speech on the issue will take place later on this week. it is "your voice, your vote." abc's adrienne bankert has the details live for us from washington, d.c. adrienne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. good to see you, kendis and diane, as always. okay, so yesterday a day off for all of the candidates but here's the deal. hillary clinton quietly fund-raising follows some accusations about yet more e-mails while as you mentioned donald trump is reiterating his immigration policy saying that he's focusing on deporting criminals who are in the country illegally. after much speculation on whether republican presidential candidate donald trump was softening on immigration, trump tweeting on sunday, i will be making a major speech on illegal immigration on wednesday in the great state of arizona. big crowds, looking for a larger venue. though his campaign has insisted the immigration plan will be fair.

>> he put this issue at the center of this presidential campaign. you heard the word humanely again. >> reporter: this weekend a firm response. they still will build that wall. >> no amnesty, no citizenship. no more sanctuary cities. >> reporter: this weekend in iowa trump inviting the family of sara root, a young woman killed by a drunk driver in the country illegally who posted bail and disappeared. >> like mr. trump said they let us down. they had him. they let him go. >> we will use immigration law to prevent crimes and we will not wait until some innocent american has been harmed or killed. >> reporter: clinton spent sunday campaigning in the hamptons as another round of e-mails obtained by abc news revealed more questions about whether clinton foundation donors received preferential treatment and political favors while clinton was secretary of state. and one more tweet from donald trump on sunday.

again, challenging hillary clinton about her health, saying both candidates should release detailed medical history. kendis and diane. >> no response yet from the clinton camp about that. >> not yet. >> abc's adrienne bankert in washington, thank you. a bus driver is now facing criminal charges after a deadly crash in louisiana. two people died and 36 injured after the bus slammed into an existing crash scene hitting a fire truck and three other vehicles. state police now say the honduran man was here illegally and did not have a driver's license. a southwest airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing after an engine exploded. photos from passengers on the plane show a piece of one of the engines is just completely missing. the flight was headed from new orleans to orlando when it was diverted to pensacola. no one was hurt. experts say engine trouble like this is almost unheard of. officials in italy are promising to look into allegations of negligence and fraud in the wake of last week's earthquake. nearly 3400 people died in the magnitude 6.2 quake.

authorities are questioning whether building codes were followed. several structures that recently were reinforced completely collapsed. the mars astronauts are back on earth. whew. they actually never left. but the crew of the six -- of six spent a year inside a dome in hawaii simulating a trip to mars. >> yesterday was the first time they actually left the dome without space suits. the goal was to help researchers understand how the isolation of a space mission would affect humans. and just the trip to mars will take more than six months. all right, coming up a major change for facebook. plus, two united airline pilots under arrest for allegedly being drunk on the job. now the company is taking action. a brave officer's desperate struggle to get a man off the train tracks pulling him to safety with just seconds to spare. stick around for the rest of that.

a new jersey transit cop is being called a hero understandly after risking his life to stave a man who is lying on the train tracks. the man had been involved in some sort of disturbance and laid down on the tracks in front of that oncoming train. look how quickly and how close that was. officer victor ortiz struggled to pull the man away but eventually dragged him to safety with just seconds to spare. in chicago, two brothers have been charged in the fatal shooting of nba star dwyane wade's cousin. a mother of four was shot and killed as she was pushing her baby stroller. police say the bullets were intended for someone else. the police superintendent says the suspects were both felons on parole and are an example of the city's problem with repeat

offenders. wade has talked about his cousin's death on twitter saying she died for no reason. police in upstate new york meanwhile, are searching to are a suspect after a college student was stabbed to death. investigators say the attack happened on the campus of the ivy league's cornell university when several late night fights broke out. the victim was identified as a 19-year-old business major from nearby ithaca college. apple releasing iphone 7 in three weeks and a new survey indicates angle may not be that far behind samsung. the survey by fluent says what the average buyer really wants isn't cutting edge tech but more storage. better battery life and a faster processor. the rumored waterproofing is considered a major plus but the loss of the headphone jack is a huge drawback. well, you may have noticed a change to facebook's trending topics feature. instead of story descriptions users now either see a topic name or a hashtag. the latest changes come after controversy earlier this year over whether editors for the trending topics feature silenced

richmond high band. back in action at their school's first football game of the season. their story, one of true resilience. >> i was up on the mountain. i watched the water come in so very scary to watch and i watched the football field slowly get covered up with water. >> when i first saw the devastation, i thought how are we going to regroup? but, you know, when i saw the vast number of people, wow, that came to help. >> richmond is just a little old town. we don't have a whole lot left here but we do have a very big band and we are very proud of our band. >> we were not going to sit down and let a flood devastate us. we jumped in. we got our stuff cleaned up. we worked. we found alternatives. we made things work. >> the band has honestly kept a positive outlook on things and kept my mind off things. i was affected by losing our
