"action news" reporter dann cuellar is live in egg harbor township where police are working together to piece together exactly what happened. dann. >> reporter: rick, police say it's too early to tell if this was a road rage incident on the garden state parkway but whatever the case, it was a very violent exchange of gunfire. as you can see this ford suv behind me all shot up. i countered at least nine bullet holes and that's not countering those on the windshield and windows shot out. a rear tire also shot out. the driver managed to drive into the wawa parking lot on

till ton road on the back rim leaving a visible line on the pavement. the wawa parking lot was filled with ambulances transporting the victims to area hospitals including atlantic city. new jersey state police report that five people were shot, one killed and the gunfire that apparently can be traced to the garden state parkway. a person was found shot in a vehicle on the parkway northbound not far from here. investigators are combing through both crime scenes. this has startled residents react to go what they are seeing. >> it's crazy. i've never -- it's sad. it's sad to even look at it it's sad. it's unbelievable. i never seen nothing like this. >> don't think it happens nur neighborhood until it happens. like something you see in the movies. it can happen in your backyard tomorrow. >> to ride on that rim like that they must have been desperate to get out of there. >> reporter: now, again, state police say five people shot, one killed in a hail of bullets that ended with one of

the vehicles badly shot up driving here to a wawa parking lot near the garden state parkway. four people hospitalized. their conditions unknown at this moment. and again, state police say it is too earl to tell if this violence was the result of a road rage incident on the garden state parkway. we'll have more on this developing story on 6abc.com. for now live here in egg harbor township, new jersey, i'm dann cuellar channel6 "action news." rick. >> all right, dann thank you. a four alarm fire destroyed an old church in philadelphia's overbrook section. the flames ripped through the century old church this morning here on the 6400 block of lansdowne avenue. and now five different congregations will have to find a new place to worship. "action news" reporter jeanette reyes is live at the scene with the very latest. jeanette. >> reporter: well, rick, it was an exhausting day for firefighters and an emotional one for parishioners. i want to step out of the way and give you a live look at what's going on right now. you can see right through this church all of the windows busted out and then there was

a fire hose running just now. firefighters say flames moved quickly throughout the church but they had no choice to evacuated and simply contain the flames. parishioners and residents watch in shock and some cried as this 100 year old gang thick style church a staple in the community became he engulfed in flames with smoke that darkened plow skies. >> it was bad. it was blazing. shooting out all sides of them windows. >> reporter: the blaze broke out about 9 o'clock at good shepherd off of lansdowne road. two people were inside including richard clem who was showering on the third floor. both got out safely. >> i couldn't breathe. i was crawling down the hallway. you know, i didn't think i was going to make it out for a second but thank god for these guys. they took me down a ladder and got me out. >> reporter: 120 firefighters responded to the four alarm fire. this incredible video from an

"action news" viewer shows what they were up against. deputy commissioner robert corrigan says way fast moving fire and homes nearby a new strategy was needed. >> at that point we knew that everybody was out of the building and our primary focus was to protect the houses behind the church. >> reporter: five congregations represent out the space to worship each weekend. now all that's left is a charred frame where the steeple once was an gutted building. >> this is a does he have station. it's a devastation to me, my congregation and all the people who are stakeholders. >> pray for us as a church family and the community 'cause that's where we worship. >> reporter: and coming back out live to us i want to give you another look at what's left of this church, really just a shell of it. now, as far as what may have caused this fire, that's still under investigation. all officials know right now

"action news" meteorologist adam joseph is live at the "action news" big board with more details from accuweather. adam. >> yeah, it is a tropical trio. we have trouble not only in the atlantic but also in the gulf of mexico. we have tropical depression number nine, number eight off of the carolinas and hurricane gaston just to the east of

bermuda. we're going to focus our attention for the next several days on the two systems in the atlantic. over the next three days both of these systems are going to curve away from the u.s. coastline so we're not looking at landfall from gaston or if tropical depression number eight which is expected to be a tropical storm shortly. winds right now 35 miles an hour. that system gaston 105 miles an hour. that not making landfall but sending large waves against the u.s. coastline here with both systems so storm tracker6 live double scan not own dollar we look at the satellite and radar but we look at the wave heights underneath gaston right near the center 30-foot swells but as they propagate towards the shore line of course they weaken. seeing about three to 5-foot swells along our coastline and tropical depression number eight also adding to those swells so that is the concern as we go through the rest of this week and even into the upcoming labor day weekend.

new program to distribute millions of dollars in state disaster funding to new jersey's 21 counties. sweeney introduced the measure nearly four years after superstorm sandy hammered the region. the girlfriend of philadelphia district attorney seth williams is charged with slashing tires on the security vehicles that were parked outside his home. tonight we're learning the crime wasn't initially reported. "action news" reporter chad pradelli is live in center city in front of the d.a.'s office with all the details. chad. >> reporter: yeah, her name is stacy cummings and yesterday she turned herself in to face the vandalism charges. what we want to know is there there are a lot of questions regarding this case chief among them when did seth williams know about his girlfriend's involvement and two, why did it take zonk so long for her to be charged. sources say initially the district attorney's office handled the investigation into the vandalized vehicles. seth williams sea security detail needed an incident report in order for the city

to repay the 850 repairs needed. sources say the d.a. office filed a report 12 days after the alleged crime but still retained control of the investigation. that investigation stalled until august 10th, 9 months after the alleged crime when the attorney for seth williams' girlfriend stacy cummings went to the d.a.'s office claiming to have information about the crime. the case was referred to the delaware county d.a. office and two weeks later court documents reveal cummings confessed to detectives in the southwest detective division of philadelphia police. the detective division that should have handled the case from the beginning since the alleged crime happened in overbrook. cummings did not go into detail about motive. >> levers you wondering there's some blurring of the personal and the professional in this instance that seems a little troubling. >> reporter: david thornburgh is the ceo of the committee of 70 a political watchdog group.

he calls the vandalism case the latest setback for williams. on the same day cummings went to the d.a. office with her information august 10th williams went public and declared he if i would report $160,000 on his financial disclosure form including $45,000 for this new roof and other work on his home. >> we all have friends that do favors for us. you buy us a beer take you out for a birthday dinner or what have you but when the gifts are of that level, a $45,000 roof work you have to wonder what exactly is going on here, what's on the other end of that transaction. >> reporter: and williams' spokesperson and his attorney so far have had no comment. i'm live in center city, chad pradelli channel6 "action news. rick. >> all right, chad, thank you. the reward to find and convict the killer of eight-year-old gabrielle carter has grown to $76,000 tonight. this has family members announce she will be laid to rest on saturday. the 11:00 a.m. service at faith holy temple church of

god in christ on river road in camden will be opened to the public. gabrielle was playing on a neighbor's porch last wednesday evening when a gun battle broke outs nearby. a bullet struck her in the head and she died at the hospital two days later. the victim involved in a hit and run last week in wilmington, delaware, has died. police say 31-year-old brian james was trapped inside his car after an suv slammed into him on pennsylvania avenue and broom streets last sunday. james was that rushed to christiana hospital where he died on wednesday. friends and family members have set up a roadside memorial for james near the accident site. police say charges are pending against the driver of the suv who ran away from the scene. police in delaware county are looking for three men who robbed a pharmacy at gunpoint this morning. happened at the springfield pharmacy on baltimore pike. police say two of the men robbed the place while staying in touch with the driver in a cab waiting outside. investigators found the cab abandoned on south chester road. the suspects got away with

the normal 84 degrees and it's going to feel really nice when we hit that normal or just below by the end of the week. right now it's 92 in philadelphia, 92 in wilmington. the heat index was up early on in the day in the mid and upper 90's in many locations but that humidity is starting to drop. 86 right now allentown, 87 in millville. beach haven right now cape may both coming in in the lower 80's. satellite and radar again you wouldn't be able to tell that a front has slipped through philadelphia. a few high clouds at times but most of the energy in new england racing off the coast of boston and cape cod presently. then there's a second front we're tracking over the great lakes. tomorrow high pressure comes in which means sunshine will stick around. it will be a little bit cooler so to speak, 89 degrees but you'll notice the drop in humidity tonight and throughout your tuesday. that high falls apart. a cold front approaches from the north bringing haze heat and humidity again ahead of it on wednesday, 91 degrees. this front will bring clouds

and some rain wednesday night into early on thursday and it will also kick away what should become a tropical storm off of the carolinas so that will come up the coast it will move out to sea but it is again together to bring some rough surf as well as rip current risk with that system. in addition we're tracking tropical depression number nine right now moving to the northwest at 6 miles an hour emerging into a very warm gulf of mexico. this will curve and move possibly into the northern part making landfall on thursday of florida as a tropical storm of winds of around 65 miles an hour. then it moves south of myrtle beach off cape hatteras. by that time it will be well off of our coastline but that will be around saturday bringing more swells and more rip current risks as we go into the holiday weekend. so, a moderate to a high risk will continue not only this week but into the weekend, waves between three and 5 feet. not only are the rip currents a risk but the breakers. they can be very strong as
