among those hurt during an early morning shooting in delaware. and a statue stolen from a local church is going back where it belongs. we'll tell you where it was recovered. but the big story on "action news" is the tropical storm hermine and the uncertain shadow it is casting on our holiday weekend. and the storm is getting closer to the florida gulf coast and people are bracing for landfall. following all of the action in its path is meteorologist, david murphy, with more on that, and the soggy conditions out here today. >> reporter: alicia, a lot of uncertainly with the track for hermine. this morning we had showers on and off, and now the mid-day lull with rain just to the south of cape may and some in baltimore that may spread east toward delaware over the next hour or so.

and some precipitation in northern montgomery county and north buck county out of southern lehigh and eastern berks county, east of reading. that is what is on the map now kind of a lull and something popping up by harrisburg as well. temperatures are on the mild side and 77 in allentown and 75 in cape may. it is very muggy out there with dew points in the 70s in some cases, that is an indication of that high humidity air, today's high is 82 degrees. well below the record high of 97 and right around average. we are seeing the numbers drop a bit and 66 is the overnight low. here is hermine. showing you the rain brands from the tropical storm probably building to the hurricane 1. heading to the florida panhandle this evening. and then it looks to make a move

to the north, i want to show that to you with the latest track that has come in. right now it's a tropical storm, there is the rain brand i showed you and it looks like this grows into i category one hurricane and then a tropical storm later tonight and the change in the forecast over the last 24 hours. late yesterday looked like the track would bring it to the delaware bay and the tracks now are bringing it farther out along the coast and probably passing us 100 miles out to sea. but look how fast it moves off cape hatteras, and slows down here, because of a blocking high pressure to the north and an upper level low pressure that interacts with this. the uncertainty comes when it slows down over the weekend. does it push closer to the coast and bring heavier rain or stay

out to sea and bring us beach erosion and heavy surf. coming up we'll have spaghetti plots and we can weigh the possible affects of what this storm will be. >> thank you david. you can check the impact of tropical storm hermine any time at 6abc.com is it weather, our interactive map in our area, and track the storm as it moves up the coast. the five philadelphia firefighters injured in a highway crash are now out of the hospital. they were on their way to a call when a tractor trailer slammed into their fire truck on i-95 near penn's landing. we have live team coverage of the aftermath this afternoon. katherine scott is at the hospital where the injured firefighters were rushed for treatment. but annie mccormick is live at the firehouse.

>> reporter: we are waiting for more information from philadelphia police handling the investigation. they have not identified the driver of the tractor trailer or said if he faces charges but he was not injured in the crash. we spoke with the fire commissioner, a lot of people are lucky today thanks to the members of ladder 16. that jackknifed tractor trailer shut down this portion of i-95 southbound stranded drivers for hours. >> it's a horrible mess. >> how long have you been waiting? >> two and a half hours, in the tractor trailer's path, the 70 foot hook and ladder truck from department 16. >> we use the ladder sometimes to shield the scene on the highway so our responders are not hit by vehicles. >> five firefighters were inside and this is what is left of the back portion of the truck steered by a firefighter. the impact of the crash pushed

the fire truck 250 feet and all firefighters were transported to the hospital and no one else at the scene was injured. this morning the commissioner came to ladder 16 as firefighters returned back. >> they are lucky but if that ladder truck had not been there it's possible that the vehicle would have gone on to the scene. and we would have had worse injuries. >> penndot returned to the scene to make sure it was structurally sound since the tractor trailer crashed into the wall under the overpass and they say it is safe. >> thank you, "action news" reporter, katherine scott joins us live at hahnemann hospital where the injured firefighters were treated and updating us on their conditions. >> reporter: officials say that points to dangers that firefighters face every day. only "action news" was here when the firefighters arrived in the

ambulances, three of them were strapped to gurneys and two of them got into wheelchairs and now all five are released. >> the ladder 16 firefighters were released from hahnemann university hospital this morning. union president, andrew thomas says if it was the quick thinking of thomas rayday behind the wheel -- >> the presence to move the ladder truck forward saved the lives of the members. >> the first arrived at 3:47 a.m. one secured to a gurney and the other in a wheelchair and then two minutes later the next one carrying two firefighters and the fifth came. they got into position to provide a safety buffer for a previous crash when the tractor trailer hit the back of the ladder truck. >> i hope they see in traffic

the lights, and move over. for whatever reason the tractor trailer failed to do that. rayday spotted the tractor trailer and slammed on the brakes. >> he saw it would make impact, preventing the impact and saving the lives of all of our members. >> reporter: and fire officials did not detail the exact injuries of the firefighters but again none of them are life-threatening and at this noon, all of them are released from the hospital. channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. from our delaware newsroom, three women are recovering from a shooting and one victim is 5 months pregnant. the shooter remains at large, they were standing outside on east 27 and street in wilmington and they were hit at 12:30 this morning. the women were taken to the hospital and said to be in stable condition. police are working on a trips of the suspects.

philadelphia is getting ready to host another big event. the 2017 nfl draft coming to town and the official announcement is happening at this moment at city hall. you are looking live here as the nfl and mayor jim kenney reveal more details. we'll update you at 12:30 and we are are streaming this announcement live at 6abc.com. we have good news for commuters that use septa's regional rail, the fleet will soon be fully repaired. four cars went back into service today and the rail line will be back up to speed by mid-november. septa pulled 100 cars from service mid-july after discovering potentially dangerous defects. >> this is an unfortunate episode in septa's life, and we want to make sure that the riding public know we are sorry about what happened but the

safety in this system is the up most importance to everybody. >> septa expects to return to regular weekday service early next month. an explosion destroyed a rocket during a test in florida. and a major league baseball player from seasonal is involved in a freeway crash. and we are back with tropical storm hermine, and what it means for us.

thick black smoke filled the sky after an explosion rock sd cape canaveral in florida today. space x was testing a rocket when the blast went off and the rocket was destroyed. people could feel the buildinged shake for miles. luckily we are told nobody was hurt. montgomery county native mike trout is expected to play tomorrow after being involved in a car crash in southern california. trout who plays for the l.a. angels was trying to avoid a crash on the highway and got caught in another.

trout was able to get out on his own and he feels fine. >> a statue that kaz stolen from outside of a port richmond church is going back where it belongs thanks to the keen eye of a local resident. freddy was leaving work near 2nd and girard when he is spotted a statue of a child sitting in a shopping cart. he thought someone left it as trash and he picked it up and brought it home. later he heard it was stolen from mother of grace church. and he says he was the one that found it. >> it could have been broken or destroyed. people destroy stuff for no reason. >> he is making plans to get the statue back to the church. it's still unclear who stole it in the first place. a controversial change coming for teachers in new jersey. their job performance evaluation will be more heavily based on how their students perform on the standardized park exams.

his daughters could not reach him. >> letters, begging and pleading, but as they said until he is ready it's on deaf ears. >> after retirement, jerry realized how he hurt his children and grandchildren. >> they didn't want anything to do with me or have their children around. >> david rowenburg says that substance abuse is rising fast for people over able 60. >> there is not enough drug and alcohol centers to keep up with the demand. >> federal agencies say that 20% to 30% of 75 to 85-year-olds have alcohol problems and up to 20% have abused drugs mostly prescription medication and some have problems with both. >> alcohol and opiate medications is the top. >> and he says that seniors take more medications than any other group.

meteorologist. >> stormtracker 6 live double scan is busy too. as we have spotty shower activity not as much as earlier this morning. i'll take a closer look in a second and for now we go outside and see sky 6 hd looking at the shore and everyone at the shore is looking at the water especially as we go over the weekend and watch the surf get heavier and hopefully not getting pounding rain and hermine is out there and a question if it perhaps gets close to us. a great live image of these showers popping through areas like green lane in northern montgomery county and pottstown is picking up the edge of that and more north of doylestown moving down out of the northwest and this one passes through quickly and for a brief moment you may get a heavier downpour and down in cape may something could clip briefly as well. temperature 77 and dew point down from this morning and still hupd out there. winds are light at 5 miles per

hour. and a spread of 73 in cape may to 77 in philadelphia. future tracker 6 showing you that as we go through the later afternoon hours even though there is not a lot of rain out there now, there could be pronounced spotty shower line through 4:00 or 5:00 in philadelphia. later on 8:00, 9:00, it's mainly over by the coast. i hope the eagles are dry tonight and i would encourage you to check out radar at 6 abc and "action news" at 4:00. lehigh valley forecast mostly cloudy and spotty showers and 82 is your high, warm and not as warm as yesterday. 77 in the water, and we have the rip currents and spotty showers around, not the best of beach days. 82 in philadelphia today is your high. and showers at times and winds remain on the light side. 66 is the overnight low. tomorrow looks great in fact. down to the tropics tropical

storm hermine has formed and continues to push its way to the panhandle of florida along the gulf coast and it looks to develop into a category one hurricane as it makes landfall. that will be later this evening. the change we are watching over the last day, is what happens to the storm as it comes to the north, a track yesterday had this much closer to the mouth of the delaware bay. the latest national hurricane center most likely track keeps the storm 100 miles or some of the jersey and delaware coastlines. and we keep the icon on there, because it may still have tropical storm force winds. the question is, as it slows down and runs into a blocking area of high pressure, does it migrate back to the coast and bring us heavy rains. most of these are off the coast but a couple of them curve in, there are is some uncertainty

here. hopefully just beach issues and not the heavy rain and wind. it likely rides up the coast, near us saturday night and sunday, coastal flooding and erosion appears to be the biggest issue, whether we get wind and strong rains has yet to be determined. 82 today and showers are possible here and there, and peeks of sunshine too, tomorrow looks great and shower ahead of the approaching storm and sunday if we get the rain that is the day we'll get it and otherwise a rough surf and beach erosion down the shore and hopes for clearing on monday. >> we'll keep our eye on it thank you. a little rain could not dampen the smiles of the first day of school at the achievement charter school. students said good-bye to their parents and hello to a brand new school year, their teachers welcomed them with open arms and the arts and technology infused

along with a tide. we are tracking hurricane hermine and how it could impact our weekend. good news about the firefighters hurt on i-95, they are treated and released. we are live with an update on the crash investigation. and the nfl draft is coming to philadelphia and find out when it is and how much of an impact will have on our city. the tropical storm could become a hurricane before it makes landfall along the eastern part of the florida's panhandle. and the remnants of is that storm could have an impact on the labor day weekend in our area. and in florida before the storm hits, a dozen families were forced to evacuate their homes when two creeks began to rise. emergency responders in sarasota county went door-to-door telling people they had to leave. >> sky 6 hd showing you cape may,
