hermine made ran fall in northern florida this morning as a hurricane. it was the first hurricane to hit the state in more than a decade. one person was killed a man who was struck by a tree. the storm pushed into georgia knocking down power lines and leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity. tonight the storm is expected to lash the carolina coast. well, as the storm takes aim at the jersey shore we have live team coverage tonight. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic is standing by in ship bottom reporter jeanette reyes is standing by in ventnor new jersey and meteorologist melissa magee and adam joseph are tracking the path of the storm and that's where we will begin with adam joseph. hey, adam. >> rick tropical storm warnings for the entire shore line of new jersey the back bays of new jersey up through the delaware river. the same thing for the entire state of delaware meaning we are going to experience tropical storm conditions over the upcoming weekend meaning winds sustained 40 miles an hour gusts higher than that

and power outages more than likely down the shore and these warnings continue all the way down the eastern seaboard so we're not the only ones in the midatlantic or southeast that will feel the effects of hermine over the holiday weekend. right now it is about 30 miles north-northwest of charleston south carolina. you can see all the rain expanding to the north and east of that center now in southern parts of virginia. you've got tornado watches through much of the carolinas and the winds right now sustained at 50 miles an hour. as we track hermine as it heads to the north and east in saturday it will be in north carolina winds still at 50 miles per hour but what's going to happen when it emerges back over the warm waters of the atlantic it will deepen, it will strengthen and once again turn into a hurricane monday morning into monday afternoon winds sustained at 75 miles an hour and then barely drift to the north on wednesday. this is the problem. you can see it's going to do a littlest hand hook a loop and then slowly work to the north and east so it's going to sit to our east for several days and it's all because of high pressure to the north.

that high acts as a wall. it blocks it so it slows, it stalls and that's going to pile up a lot of water for several days saturday through monday and meteorologist melissa magee the shore is going to take the biggest hit with this. you have more about that. >> yeah, adam it's a prolonged event especially a wind event for our coastal communities as we get into the height of the storm system and as it reaches our latitude. so we'll talk about the coastal threats here. heavy rain certainly a moderate concern as the storm system strengthens from a tropical storm to a hurricane but coastal flooding beach erosion power outages certainly will be on the high side as we go throughout our holiday weekend. expected gusts the strongest will be right at the immediate coastline here. 60 miles per hour gusts from atlantic city down to wildwood for interior section ofses of jersey 50 to 60 miles per hour. east of the i-95 corridor you could find gusts up to 50 miles an hour. for the city points north and west for the poconos and lehigh valley gusts from 40 miles an hour or lower than that. so we'll talk about the time

line and we've changed this just a little bit over the next few days. saturday not much of a concern. clouds pockets of sun depending on your location especially for inland areas. saturday afternoon a moderate concern but it will turn on the high side sunday and especially into monday and this is the that i'm we will start to see that intensification with the storm and by tuesday, the storm will essentially start to rain itself out. the key take away points with this storm is that there will be minimal rain for inland locations, no big impacts along the i-95 corridor points to their north and west. the shore however gets battered and the potential of some low lying evacuations. we'll take a closer look at that coming up in the full and exclusive accuweather forecast. rick. >> thank you. let's turn to the situation at the jersey shore tonight and we begin with new jersey correspondent nora muchanic standing by live in ship bottom. nora. >> reporter: hi there rick. it turned out to be a great day here on long beach island but as you just hard things will deteriorate over the next

couple of days. and as they prepare for hermine lifeguards tell us beaches will be opened but you may not be able to swim. >> beaches are going to be opened. it's going to be restricted swimming to knee deep only. we'll be up here for the public up until it starts raining. >> reporter: as hermine heads our way lifeguards in harvey cedars are beginning to pull some of their stands off the beach and as they do that, public works crews are collecting trash cans and bringing them back to the yard. >> we're really just trying to get the word out to everybody that there is a storm coming, there is some uncertainty to how it will affect us but we just want to communicate to everybody just to be aware. >> reporter: bad weather may be headed our way but it was a beautiful sunny day at the beach. the waves are a lot recover though than they were yesterday. >> when i was trying to body surf i flipped and landed on my back. >> yeah. >> reporter: are you okay. >> yeah. >> when i went under the waves it sort of like took my leg and puddles me under with it. >> they got washed down about 50 yards it looked like. >> reporter: really? >> yeah. >> reporter: it's just that strong. >> it's a little too rough really. >> reporter: the wind is picking up too.

watch this umbrella cart wheel across the beach until a lifeguard snagged it with one hand. hopefully that's the only save he has to make in the next couple days good that actually was a good save. he caught it on a good bounce. i hope you got that on camera. the threat of bad weather is not keeping people away. the traffic in surf city is proof of that. >> there will be a bit of rain and a bit of wind and everybody here is pretty hearty and pretty excited about the last weekend. >> reporter: you're not being scared away. >> not yet. >> reporter: the storm is expected to cause serious beach erosion. that's a problem in holgate lbi's southern most tip. that's where 200 yards of beach that was pumped in july by the army corps of engineers has already washed away. >> i'm thinking where we are standing right here nora, by tuesday we're going to be under water and the water is going to be at least a hundred feet west of us here. >> reporter: that would be bad news of course. now shore towns will be watching critical spots like that checking for serious erosion not just in holgate but up and down the jersey

coast. live in ship bottom, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news." >> nora, thank you. let's head out to jeanette reyes in ventnor. how are tourists there handling the threat of the storm? >> reporter: wie, rick, it seems like the motto today is enjoy it while you can. with that being said, i want you to take a live look here behind me at the beauty that is ventnor beach and take it all in because it is going to be drastically different, very, very soon and don't be fooled ventnor beach and the shore line will certainly be slammed once hermine arrives this way. >> it's a good weekend. it's important but we've had a lot of sunshine this year so i could use a day off. >> reporter: michael tabaso is one of the few business owners who is managing to look at the bright side of things as hermine barrels up the east coast bringing with it pounding rains and gusting winds. it's enough to square off tourists and that is sure to cause a ripple effect. >> every weekend, every event is very important for atlantic

city. >> bad weather reports hurt. >> yes. >> probably going out tomorrow. sunday is up in the air so is monday i guess. hopefully the storm will stay off shore. >> reporter: lawmakers and city officials say the impending storm more than justifies the state's multi-million dollars dune project which is set to bring much needed coastal protection to longport margate ventnor and atlantic city. it was prompted by hurricane sandy. >> our goal is to get these beaches built, get the protection put up and as we see today, you know, we're getting ready for another coastal story. it's a matter of safety of course but it also offers protection to a fragile local economy heavily dependent on tourists. >> tour vigil our life blood. and if we don't have beaches, we don't have tourists. if we don't have tourists we don't have small businesses. if we don't have small businesses we don't have the jobs. >> reporter: and this project is going to miss this storm by a few months actually

bid opening isn't until october 4th and they won't start working on this project until early to mid winter but they'll certainly be prepared come next year. reporting in vendor nor jeanette reyes channel6 "action news." rick. >> jeanette thank you. and as we mentioned hermine is expected to reach hurricane level strength off the delaware coast monday morning. right now rehoboth beach officials are keeping an eye on the wind which can generate dangerous waves. they're warning folks to keep a close eye on flags on the beach before even thinking about going into the water. tomorrow the red flags will likely go up signaling dangerous conditions. this afternoon crews took up the trash cans along the boardwalk to prevent them from flying around during the storm. we of course will stay ahead of tropical storm hermine throughout the weekend at 6abc.com/weather. you can also use it to check the path the storm is taking as it moves up the coast. and of course you can follow our "action news" meteorologists on social media for updates as they happen.

concert fans are hoping that the weather won't wash out this weekend's made in america music festival. from chopper6 you can see the stage is set up and from the philadelphia museum of art. crews have been busy all week long assembling the stage and the lighting towers along the ben franklin parkway. rihanna is the headliner tomorrow night while coldplay is the big act on sunday. as of now there is no weather contingency plan in place. >> ♪ >> developing news now from northeast philadelphia where an accident has left behind an unbelievable scene. a car smashed through a fence hit a swimming pool and ended up underneath the deck of a home. "action news" reporter jeff chirico is lie at the scene -- live is the scene with more on exactly what happened there. jeff. >> reporter: hey rick the car has been towed and crews are here cleaning up. witnesses say it was like a scene out of the dukes of hazard. the car actually new over this pool and landed under that deck crashing into a storage

shed and taking out the spiral stair days. now this is what it looked like from chopper6 just after 3:30 today. the scene left neighbors here wondering how in the world this could have happened. police say the car was traveling along jamison road when it was hit broadside by a pickup. the driver lost control, crashed through the fence, launching over the pool. fortunately the driver managed to walk away uninjured. no one was in the backyard. we just spoke to the driver about her harrowing experience. your car actually flipped over. >> yeah. >> reporter: and then you new over this way, over the pool? >> yeah. i was in car. >> reporter: and what's going through your mind when this is happening. >> i think i'm die. >> reporter: yeah, many were wondering how in the world the car would have been re-- could be removed. the tow company lowered the bed over the pool pulling the car away. now back out here live l and i was out herein speculating the

will be able to close the gap. matt o'donnell channel6 "action news. >> during the meeting several protestors gathered outside. at one pointer police had to get involved as a trump supporter had his sign ripped up by a protestor. in other news an embattled beach and dune protection project along the jersey shore is moving forward. today in ventnor officials with the u.s. army corps of engineers say they're taking bids. the dunes will be built in margate ventnor and longport and will reduce storm damage and beach erosion in june margate ended its nearly four year battle allowing the state to use eminent domain the take property for the project.

>> adam is back with the latest on hermine. it was a tropical storm watch. now it's a warning. >> now it is a warning. warning worse than a watch meaning we're experience tropical storm like conditions here over the week and here's the locations where those tropical storm warnings are in

effect. all of the coastal communities for new jersey as well as delaware, also the bay in new jersey and delaware and that goes all the way up to delaware city in new castle county. this is the area. anyone in the orange we will see more than likely some power outages over the weekend with a prolonged very strong wind all because of hermine. hermine right now the center of it near charleston south carolina. the rhett boxes heading up the eastern seaboard are tornado watches as you get that extra spin in the atmosphere, a lot of moisture. it's moisture loaded on the front end of the storm now up to the virginia and north carolina border. as we look at future tracker6, now tomorrow it's not a bad day even at the shore because you're going to have a little bit of sun in the morning, then the clouds going to increase in the afternoon but most areas through tomorrow afternoon are dry. if you have outdoor plans tomorrow, keep them at this point. some rain arriving in southern new jersey and delaware by the afternoon as the winds pick up. as we get into saturday night and most of sunday again

philadelphia to the north and west it is dry. it's just cloudy, cool and breezy but rain developing right along the shore sunday morning as we get into sunday afternoon and sunday night, that's when the rain starts to back in to inland locations, heavy at times and these bands of heavy rain also will bring some very strong winds with it. as we get into monday morning for labor day itself, rain especially philadelphia still to the south and east, a few showers up in the lehigh valley but the farther you are north and west the better off you'll be. i'm not seeing -- of not seeing a lot of rain and monday afternoon still dealing with that rain at the shore and even as far west as philadelphia. so, as we look at how much rain to expect through the weekend through the holiday, the shore takes the biggest hit here with anywhere of 2-inches or more. around three-quarters of an inch to philadelphia and far less than that up to the north and west. the problem with this storm is going to be the coastal flooding, the beach erosion and the storm surge. late saturday through monday, two to 4-foot storm surge

meaning if you were to stand on the edge of the water expect two to 4 feet rise in that water as the high tide comes in. the tides we have major concern about and even moderate is sunday the first one at 10:07 a.m. then sunday knighten:17. monday 10:45 and we could worry about even three, four more tide cycles after that going into tuesday, so this is many rounds of high tide because the storm stalls to the east and in fact monday morning at 4:00 a.m., that's when the height of the storm happens. this is when the storm deepens just off the coast to hurricane strength with winds of 60 plus miles per hour at the shore. for us here in philadelphia inland about 40 plus files an hour. as we look at the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, 79 tomorrow. again not a bad day. even sunday inland locations it could be dry, much of the day. it's at the shore we'll start to see those conditions deteriorate, 77. windy, the worst of it will be

on monday of 79 degrees. tuesday beyond we start to heat things up another heat wave on the way. hot and humid with temperatures back in the 90's. we will have another updated track from the national hurricane center at 11 o'clock tonight. i'll have that. also we'll being to video chats on my facebook page later this evening. >> adam thank you. abc's "world news tonight" is next with david muir here on channel6.
