delaware coast. governor chris christie declared a state of emergency in ocean, cape may and atlantic county. >> a limited state of emergency is in place in sussex county, home to rehoboth beach and dewey beach. we'll have live reports throughout the morning. >> we'll begin with david murphy and chris sowers looks like it will hang around a while. >> reporter: the center of the storm is 250 miles off the coast of atlantic city. this is where the center of the storm was 6 hours ago, it's here. it's drifting farther away from the coastline. it is expected to hook back in tomorrow, as of today, the farther track is affecting us in a positive way. first of all we'll see the

clouds break up. rain is off the coast, we have additional rain down to the south of us, storm tracker 6 live double scan that's the only rain you see in sight. it's light and holding it's ground down near baltimore, it may drift to the south. today will be rain-free with a mix of clouds and sun. the big issue down the shore even the slight change in the track today, has not changed at all. we see the wave heights rolling in across the shore. 9 feet on lbi. 8 feet ocean city, it gets better south toward cape may and rehoboth beach with 6-foot waves that's enough to turn up the beach breakers we have heavy surf and they will not want you to go into the water today. we have wind gusts coming in off

the ocean at 28 miles per hour. that will tend to build as we go through the day, the situation with coastal flooding pretty much the same. we have moderate to moderate coastal frugd this -- flooding s morning and it will be bad later tonight. the situation at the coast has not changed, you're looking at the potential for flooding. chris sowers is out on the terrace, you have more details. >> reporter: good morning, to you, dave, before i get into the track, and give you the stats, it's freezing, temperatures have dropped into the 50s, with the breeze it feels chilly out here, especially compared to what we've been used to the last couple of months. hermine has maximum staged wind of 65 miles per hour and moving to the east, northeast, it's pulling away from the jersey shore, which is a good sign, but it's still expected to take that

turn back toward the coast and it it will be strengthening when it makes that turn. we're anticipating rough surf and flooding from boston to the virginias and the carolinas. it's southeast of the city of philadelphia. it doesn't look like it will get out of here until tuesday morning, wednesday, and thursday, it starts to pull away south the canadian maritimes. it's the hook toward the left that we're concerned about, could bring about dangerous flooding especially sunday night into monday morning. what you're looking at are wave heights, we are expecting waves ten to 15 feet within the greenish yellow band off the shore sunday night. along with that band of wave activity comes the storm surge. pick are tur your normal -- pick

your normal high tide and add 2 to 3 feet. it's sticking around before pulling away on tuesday, life threatening flooding is a possibility from the coastline of monmouth county to the delaware beaches. move your cars out of flood-prone areas, expect power outages overnight tonight and into tomorrow. obey local law enforcement, they are trying to help you guys along here, make sure everybody is safe. for this afternoon it actually looks really nice, it doesn't turn downhill until tomorrow. jersey shore, more clouds than sun, chancer of a shower, 73. philadelphia, 78 degrees, look at the poconos, once again a day in the upper 60s, lots of sunshine, yesterday was stunning in the mountains.

officials prefer it that way. this comes after the dire warnings for people to stay away from the ocean, stay out of the water, we're expecting the waves up to 15 feet at some point, of course you have the major flooding, the heavy surf, things like that, but like our meteorologists have been saying today in the morning and earlier in the day you'll not see any of the ugly weather. it's as we get into tonight and tomorrow. a lot of people have been heeding the warnings. this comes after yesterday, governor chris christie declared a state of emergency to have the national guard on handle if hermine arrives. if you are near the coastline, power outages are likely. if there is anything you need to get now, go and get it, it will be difficult to get around as things get as bad as some are expecting. in the meantime it's best to get

sunshine down there later on this afternoon. we're showing clear conditions on storm tracker 6 live double scan, look at the numbers, 48 degrees in the mountains, 55 in allentown, reading, 56. trenton, 60. atlantic city at the airport, 63. philadelphia, 64. and dover, checking in at 66 degrees. here's the latest on hermine. you can see it spinning this huge counter clockwise circulation wrapping around the center which is approximately 300 miles out to sea, the rain bands are well off to the north. this again is expected to take somewhat of a jog closer to the coast over the next 24 to 36 hours, look at the trajectory of the line here you're piling the water in on the coast. the problem a little is, we have a high tide that's higher than normal. when low tide comes because of the onshore flow, the water can't recede, so the low tide

comes. these are the spaghetti plots, there's uncertainty in the exact track of the storm. obviously the closer it turns to the coast, the greater the impact it's going to be. farther a way, the less of the impact. this one is close to the coast, these models have it 100 miles east of what that model is suggesting. that 100-mile shift, until it makes that turn toward the east/northeast that's when we'll have a handle on scabbingly what's going -- owe exactly what's going to happen at the jersey shore. we are expecting flooding and beach erosion. it's a george towels day just

like yesterday -- it's a gorgeous day just like yesterday. combination of sun and clouds, breezy and comfortable. temperatures in the 70s. overnight tonight into tomorrow morning, as the storm makes the left-hand side we see bands of rain get closer and closer. by 7:30 it's raining in parts of the area and some of that gets heavier as the day progresses. north and west, rainfall totals, heaviest closest to the water, atlantic city, an inch, wildwood, 3/4 of an inch. i-95 corridor, a tenth of an inch of rain. we've lowered the wind gusts down to ten miles per hour or so. 20 to 30, north and west, in the

and 92. >> thank you so much. the time 6:17. the story we first brought you as breaking news, there are two arrests following the shooting of a atlantic city police officer, jeff chirico with the latest information. >> that officer is here at atlanticare in critical condition. meanwhile, a day long manhunt came to an end when police arrested two cumberland county men. when these three men walked past this nightclub surveillance camera they had no idea they were being robbed. two atlantic city police officers saw the robbery and approached one of the three alleged robbers fired at an officer critically wounding him the another officer fired back killing is one of the suspects. the other fled. the officer was taken to atlanticare regional medical center and underwent surgery. meanwhile, the detectives

overnight update and david we begin with you, what's the latest? >> reporter: the breaking news, is that the storm itself continues to drift farther to the east of us. 6 hours ago, the center was here now it's here, that's 250 miles off the coast of atlantic city. even though we expect it to hook closer to the coast sometime tomorrow, this movement to the east is boding well for our weather pattern today. at the shore you'll see sun. rain not much of an issue. storm tracker 6 live double scan we're tracking showers down to the south of baltimore, they are drifting away from us, we are expecting it to be dry today. if we get rain down the shore it will be later tonight and tomorrow. one thing that is hat knows changed is the -- that hadn't changed is the waves coming in

off the ocean and the winds. this morning's high tide you'll see flooding. it's partly because of the waivings buildings. in the last half-hour, farther up the coast, 9 feet. long beach island and atlantic city, 8-foot waves in rehoboth beach that's enough to create heavy surf and dangerous beach conditions. you're strongly encouraged to stay out of the ocean today. of course at high tide this morning, some moderate or coastal flooding, we have gusts at 20 miles per hour coming off the ocean. the gusts will pick up tonight and tomorrow. chris sowers is outside on the terrace with how today will play out and how tomorrow will change a little bit. >> reporter: right now it's very nice, comfortable, temperatures in the low 60s. some locations have dropped into

the mid 50s this morning. it's very comfy start to your sunday morning. let's talk about hermine. this is the latest on hermine. this was i should at 5:00 a.m. from the national hurricane center, posting winds at 65 miles per hour moving to the east/northeast away from the jersey shore, at approximately 12 miles per hour. sitting 325 miles southeast of the city of philadelphia. it is still expected to make that left hand turn. it's going to slow down and make the left hand turn. it will move closer to the jersey shore over the next 24 to 48 hours. that's why we're concerned about severe coastal flooding and major beach erosion over the next couple of days. what you're not seeing here, around the center of circulation there's tremendous wave action. we're seeing waves up to 30 feet and incredible storm surge. as that makes the turn toward the coast, all that action goes along with it and it gets closer

to the coastline. this is our dangerous flooding graphic. you see the circle of green and yellow that's working off the coastline with a 3 to 5-foot storm surge. as we get into this afternoon and tonight it gets closer to the jersey shore as the center of the storm makes the left hand, the problem is over the next 48 hours it's going to sit there and spin. that means each and every high tide from this point on is not going to have a chance to recede. each high tide gets higher and higher, and the flooding conditions get worse and worse. if you're parked in a flood-prone area more your car if you live in a flood-prone area seek higher ground and move away over the next couple of days, balls it can turn life threatening with the flooding that the national weather service have talking about. move cars to higher ground,

here at the water, the waves, the water is bit rough and the waves you can see them crashing in. the beach is closed. there is not a mandatory evacuation, officials are hoping that people are smart and use their common sense and not get near the water. people are walking but nobody has gone in. i want to give you a look at the boardwalk. it's a little bit busier, considering it's labor day weekend you would expect it to be busy. one gentleman told me i'm not going to be scared, and come out and enjoy it while i can. bundle up, balls it's a bit breezy. chris christie declared a state of emergency to make sure the national guard is on hand once hermine comes through, if things are as bad as expected, one thing we can expect are the power outages, make sure you're prepared in that sense, have

everything you might need in your home. getting around might be difficult, as well, as we have the severe weather we're expecting. buy any emergency items you think you might need, get to higher ground if you're in the type of situation where you think you will be vulnerable. the weather will start turning as we get into the day. today early in the day it's pretty gorgeous, we'll keep you posted as soon as things start to change. reporting in ocean city, jennette reyes channel 6 "action news." >> we turn now to annie mccormick who is live along stone harbor. what's it like where you are? >> reporter: it's gorgeous, we're watching the sunrise, the waves are here, people are walking around, you can see seagulls there, yesterday, the managers in stone harbor were asking all visitors to leave the island. that's not a mandatory

evacuation, but they were asking them to leave for their safety. their bigger concern is, really, when high tide comes in. high tide is expected between 11:14 and 11:25. that's when they are expecting moderate to major coastal flooding today and tomorrow. the concern with that is, they were worried that certain portions of roads in stone harbor may not be drivable at some point. they wanted to make sure that people were checking off all the lists you need to check if you live here check your boats to make sure they are secure and making sure your vehicles are on higher ground. most of us that go to the jersey shore and life long jersey shore people, we all go to the specific shores, so we know the areas of the shores that we go to that are prone to flooding. knowing that, a lot of managers are asking people to move their vehicles and secure things in those areas, as well.

about the state of emergency with governor governor christies emergency managers tools they need to have a speedy sponges. they are asking people to stay off roadways, so emergency vehicles can move around if need be. let's say they quaff for certain funds they -- qualify for certain funds they may noticed it's a preemptive measure if they do need anything it can be put in place quickly. as you look at the beach, it looks calm. yesterday they were telling people not to go into the ocean, they are worried about the the height of the waves and the possible rip currents, as well. there are a number of things they have in place. one popular bridge a lot of people use down here to get between stone harbor and sea

to have a difficult time receding. you will notice tides higher than normal for places like fortescue and money island and gandys beach the tides will run one to two feet above normal delaware bay, and maybe flooding getting into the philadelphia area the delaware river with flooding. here's hermine, it is 250 miles off the coast. it's a counter clockwise spin. you get the drier air from canada, that's why it's comfortable out there this morning. the spaghetti plots, every line represents the tropical forecast model. when the lines are closer together that means they are in pretty good agreement. they look 0 to be in the good agreement on the left-hand turn. it's just how far of a left-hand

turn does the storm make. we think 89 impact at the jersey shore will be severe later this afternoon and especially tomorrow morning. combination of sun and clouds today. it's a gorgeous day, comfortable out there, a little breezy, but very, very nice. labor day we'll see clouds and they will lower and thicken overnight tonight and we'll see the rain push on through here, some of that could be heavy at times for the jersey shore on labor day. rainfall totals this particular forecast model is not too impressed. accuweather will go one to two inches. this model has much less than that suggesting the bands stay out to sea. looks what's going on north and west. we're not expecting anything west of the city of philadelphia. it's going to be a nice weekend overall for places like pottstown, allentown, reading, those areas will be very, very nice over the next couple of days. the effects of the jersey shore

could be damaging to perhaps, devastating if the storm makes the lnld -- lnld -- left hand turn and comes in close to the beach. these are wind gusts 40 to 5 to 55 miles per hour. it will create power outages. high tide occurs at 10:07 expect minor to moderate flooding. sunday's high tide 10:17 p.m. this is the latest from the national hurricane center minor to moderate flooding. tonight we're expecting the dangerous storm surge as well as moderate to major flooding, that moderate to major coastal flooding last through labor day. forecast for today, look for a combination of sun and clouds, 79 in allentown. 77 in trenton.
