6:00 pm
"action news", delaware valley's leading news ram, with meteorologist melissa magee, jeff skversky, sarah bloomquist and walter perez. sunday night i'm walter perez, sarah's off. in the news thousands packed the parkway for made in america festival. also safe in the face of tragedy, sunday services go on nearly a week after church in overbrook was destroyed by fire. but the big story on "action news" is very welcomed change in the track of hermine, taking a live look at
6:01 pm
jersey shore from sky six over atlantic city high waves but overall, a beautiful evening out there, the storm will still have an impact on the jersey shore and delaware beaches but hermine's shift is good news by and large. we have team coverage of the hermine we will begin with melissa magee and cecily tynan with what these changes mean, cecily. >> this image of hermine shows a few things. a wave. there we go, now this image shows, this is still, a very strong storm, maximum sustained wind 75, 70 miles per hour. it is near hurricane strength. it is very large. tropical storm force wind fields about 500 miles across, but it is, way out to sea. this is the center of the storm, it is 335 miles, east of ocean city, maryland, and this track, is really shifted over the past 24 hours. to explain why, you really to have look at the what is going on in the upper atmosphere. this is snapshot of the 500 millibar level, 20,000 feet up.
6:02 pm
all week long we talked about how up thatter level low was going to capture hermine by day break. this is what was happening at 6:00 this morning. here's hermine, that upper level low still off virginia coast. now it will eventually, capture it, and try to pull it a little bit further west but this likely won't happen until tomorrow morning, and more than 24 hours, later. so what this means, that track has shifted east, 150 miles, and that is headaching a big impact. the here's the latest maximum sustain wind again 07 miles an hour, still drifting to the east/north east at 5 miles per hour, kind of a good news/bad news forecast. the good news track has shifted to the east. bad news is that hermine will just meander and do a dance with our coast through tuesday, will weaken as it toss but it is going no where fast. what this means for the coast, we will have details on that with meteorologist melissa magee, melissa? >> cecily what you have said is essentially hermine changes
6:03 pm
hermine shifted to the east by 150 miles then initially anticipated. so impacts have have diminished at the coast. shore gusts nonetheless anywhere from 35 to 45 miles an hour, less coastal flooding, i think there will be an issue with minor to moderate but no major coastal flooding anymore. significant beach erosion because that is because we will get that continued pounding of the is your f here's storm tracker six live double scan radar 3-d, we will see the center of hermine and closer to the center we have wave heights as high as 21 feet high, 14 feet high, further west, 11 feet just off shore and ride in between atlantic city and row rebeach waves as high as 7 feet and these can get higher throughout the rest of the holiday weekend. we will talk about high tides times and flooding concerns. moderate concerns for rest of tonight. hermine has yet to headache that jog to the north and eventually the northwest. so we do have to prolong the time in which we will find high tide flood ago cross the region. monday morning at ten to 11:00 .
6:04 pm
10:30 to 11:30 tomorrow night still moderate concern with flooding and by tuesday morning, 11 to noon, is when we do have a concern for high tide flooding, again, because hermine will sit, spin, just off the coast line but well off shore. coming up walter, we will have the latest on her mine what this means for rest of the holiday weekend and things are heating up later this week. those details with the full and exclusive accu weather forecast. >> could have been worse, thanks, melissa. lets move to the shore where sunshine was a welcomed surprise. "action news" reporter jeff chirico is live in north wildwood and people were actually allowed to access water in some spots. >> reporter: that is right, walter. we are feeling effects of hermine, wind is picking up and waves are a little larger than normal but hermine is far enough out there to have made for a picture perfect great summer day at the beach, at least for those who remained. >> we woke up this morning and it was sunny so we decided to come to the beach.
6:05 pm
>> reporter: so much for horrors of hermine blue skies and sun made for a beautiful beach day in wildwood crest despite rip currents the beach here is one of the only ones that remained opened. life guard made sure sun bathers didn't go in past their knees, on a sunny labor day weekend this place should be pack, however early forecast of a wash out scared many away, prompting hotel toss slash prices, the view who remain took advantage of the summer's final weekend. >> it was pretty windy. we didn't make it out to the beach yesterday but some scattered showers, hasn't been too bad, been able to get out of the hotel room. >> we will see what time, wait it out, see what happens and luckily we did because it is nice and sunny out today. >> reporter: back out here live you can see the ocean is churning, as i said, waves a little bit bigger then usual, but we're not out of the the woods just yet. still warnings of significant beach erosion and coastal flooding but so far this is kind of the storm we can handle here at beach. reporting live from north

wildwood, jeff chirico for channel six "action news". >> jeff, thanks for that. lets move to atlantic city right now and "action news" reporter christie ileto, christie? >> reporter: well, walter, it is a bit blustery out here but absolutely gorgeous. boardwalk was packed with people, the beach filled with vacationers, but the water is still off limits to swimmers because rip tide is still a big threat as a result of hermine. >> we just had no swimming at all, throughout the day. >> reporter: maybe sunny and 07 but water is still so dangerous. the water along atlantic city beach front. >> it is pretty vicious, rip tides are out of control. if you go in right here you will be in the rock pile in seconds. >> we like the excitement, excitement of her kaine. >> reporter: tourist are not regretting their choice to stick the out despite hermine's looming arrival. >> yesterday in the morning it seemed worse then it did last night or today. today has been beautiful. we're glad we stayed but my

mom's making us leave tonight. >> great day. >> reporter: businesses like steel pier were forced to close their doors saturday because of the fierce winds. many are hoping sunday's sunny weather helps them rebound saturday's loss. >> labor day was really important and to lose yesterday was tough but today was nice weather, hoping to get tomorrow. it is really important to us. >> reporter: now, while many businesses are open here year round but they really rely heavily on summer holiday weekend in particular, labor day weekend. as for ocean again the waters are off limits to swimmers and will likely that be way for remainding, portion of the holiday weekend. reporting live from atlantic city, christie ileto for channel six "action news", walter christie, thank you. let's move further down the coast to rehoboth beach, delaware and "action news" reporter bob brooks. were you there yesterday as well. what differences are you seeing.
6:08 pm
>> walter, good evening, like we have been hearing all of the reports tonight, it is a lot nicer out here. wind have died down, the sunnies shining, and haven't had any rain but the big concern still is like every where else is the water. behind me i want to show you there is a ton you cannot see behind that big wave that crashed there. there is a bunch of people out there, as soon as beach patrol ended their shift they didn't waste anytime they went right out there and that is very, very dangerous right now, the beach patrol does not want them there, for the most part it is a picture perfect day for the whole family in rehoboth beach. >> sunny, little windy but no rain. but you still don't see anyone in the water. >> the ocean is closed. red flag conditions which means no swimming at all. >> reporter: captain kent buckson says don't let blue sky and sun mislead you, water is still not safe. the power of hermine's surge is still present. >> wind is still blowing from the east and it is 40 plus,
6:09 pm
you know, the rips are very dangerous and big waves still crashing on the beach. >> reporter: captain buckson recommend you do no closer then the edge of the water. >> it only takes a big wave to knock a kid down and suck them out into a rip current and then you have a really bad situation that could turn tragic. >> reporter: chuck says that you can bet on that neither he or his two grandchildren are taking any chances. >> way too rough even for adult. >> reporter: you will not go in there, are you. >> no. >> reporter: officials say flooding and low lying areas is their main concern now. that includes neighborhoods like this right off of long neck road. >> last night it was up to the bottom step here. >> reporter: joann, lives next to the the water, it is her seventh fifth birthday and her family is in town. she got lucky this time around and said storm surge swelled last night but never flowed over. >> yes, very thankful. we have had problems before because of the waters. >> reporter: back out here live here, unfortunate but
6:10 pm
that is a perfect example of what you're being asked not to do, and that is to go inside those waves. you can see they are very big right now, and there are rip currents. we are hearing that tomorrow around 11:00 a.m. that is when worst flooding in sussex county could potentially happen so you can be sure walter we will keep an eye on that. reporting live, at rehoboth beach bob brooks for channel six "action news", walter. >> bob, thanks for that report. threat of hermine of course and whole lot of people home a bit early from the shore but is there plenty to do around here. "action news" reporter allie gorman is live in rittenhouse square with that part of the coverage, hi ali. >> reporter: hi there walter. take a look behind me at rittenhouse square it is pretty busy for a holiday weekend. we nose a lot of people changed their plans. they were supposed to be down the shore but decided to stay in the city instead. now others they had planned on being here for holiday weekend and as you can see most are

taking full advantage of this beautiful weather. the it was the perfect day for a picnic in fairmount park. she he says once he knew weather would be nice he set it up. >> it is beautiful. i like it like. that i wish it would stay like that. >> reporter: another group, hit the soccer field but this isn't your typical game, it is their wedding celebration. >> we met playing soccer and our first date was five years ago on labor day. >> reporter: now he plays for geneva major soccer club. they were worried rain would move in but happy it held off. >> rain or shine we were going to be playing soccer but we appreciate the sun. >> reporter: from the field to the street, the city was bustling, some stralling the center city sidewalk, others relax nothing rittenhouse park and thousands making their way for day two of the made in america concert. >> weather was great. i thought it would rain all day. it feels really good though.
