after "action news." and a shooting outside of a philadelphia elementary school. in kensington this morning it's just the latest in a rash of violence across the city. john rawlins is live now with details on this. >> reporter: monica, it's been a hectic day and a half for philadelphia police investigators the latest incident the shooting victim was across the street from the school and assaulted by a gunman that later fled in an older model chevy monte carlo. >> it was so sudden. >> the young man came up with the gun -- >> he came up with the gun and started running -- victim ran and pulled out the weapon and shot one time -- >> angelo skinner says he never saw such violence close up. the victim thought to be a vendor selling bathroom supplies. police say he was shot in the back of the head. the latest mayhem. >> there is gunshots everywhere,

people getting killed left and right. >> a war zone. >> yes. >> it claims people they knew. so far no lie this year, four or five -- >> this afternoon it follows a night where 10 people were shot and four fatally. patricia hajj estimated she knows seven people in the last few years. >> i wish i knew. you tell me baby. you tell me. what is the answer? >> the key part of the answer the complex problem the police say that people that know something need to say something. >> we need people that get information on the shootings that are likely to result in retaliation, let us know, you may be the difference in saving someone's life. >> retaliation, revenge and pay back whatever you want to call it. it's a factor in street violence, and people have to

understand they have to talk to detectives to protect additional bloodshed and pain. john rawlins, channel 6 "action news." investigators say they found open alcoholic containers in a car after a crash that left a 5-year-old dead. it happened at 1:00 this morning on i-78 at the heller town interchange. and investigators say that the driver of a nissan struck a guardrail ejecting her three passengers, a woman and a girl and 5-year-old rayvon robinson who was killed. the car careened back on to the highway and it was hit by two other cars. a motorcyclist suffered critical injuries after being struck by a car in chester county. it happened in the southbound lanes of 202 in west town township. the driver of that car clipped the bike tossing the

motorcyclist to the pavement. a shocking day in one trenton classroom after a kindergartner brought 30 packs of heroin in his lunch box. the child was rushed to the hospital and tested for opiates. bob brooks joins us with the latest on this disturbing case. >> reporter: monica, good evening. pretty scary stuff here. a lot of kids lives put at risk with the drugs coming into the school here. this isn't a 5-year-old to blame, this is for adults and the investigation is to find out who put the drugs in his lunch box. >> could you imagine if these children at the international academy charter school of trenton accidentally ingested heroin, it could have happened yesterday. a kindergarten was found with 30 bags on him. >> horrible.

grateful that this kid didn't digest it. thank god he was not giving it another student. and more disappointed they are finding out through word of mouth rather than the school. >> we were not notified. we were complaining to the director this morning about it because we were not notified. >> a teacher told her 5-year-old student to stop playing what she thought was a candy wrapper and the boy did but like 5-year-olds do, he started to play with it again, the teacher went to take it away she realized it was heroin and 29 more bags wither found in his lunch box and the boy was take and to the medical center and luckily tested negative for opioids. >> imagine if the child had not brought it to school it would still be in the children's home. >> it's not the school's fault.

just a building. >> the building has stood for more than a century and suffered another fire a few years ago. no word on the cause. philadelphia's beverage tax is now at the center of a lawsuit. the beverage industry challenging the tax saying it unfairly targets drinks based on size rather than price. mayor jim kenney plans to defend the attack and win the lawsuit. it's set to take effect in january. wilmington will soon have a must mayor after the incumbent was defeated. the winner will face republican robert martin and independent candidate steve washington in november. vernon odom breaks down the race tonight. >> at wilmington river front voters picked mike prissiki. he won in a field of seven

toll brothers granted a permit for a 18 story building there. four existing properties will have to be demolished there. meal time is more special for homeless children at a homeless shelter in german town thanks to a big donation from shop-rite. katherine scott reports on this simple but much needed gift. >> reporter: it was the regular prelunch hustle at the pennsylvania kitchen in german town accompanied by a little fanfare. >> today the ribbon was cut on the newly renovated kitchen and dining area, an $80,000 project for the facility that serves homeless and trafficked youth 21 and younger. >> i was on the streets and came here to look for a way to build

along i-95, 87 in reading and 82 in allentown and north of that cold front, it's 67 right now in the poconos, this front meaning some business with a wind shift and dropping temperatures but not much again in the way of a solid line of rain to come in and bring us much needed rainfall, during the overnight hours tonight. also that front is going hold tropical storm julia to the south and weak tropical storm bringing heavy rain to florida and the carolinas and outer banks of north carolina and this will sit and drift in the region over the next day or two. back at home, refreshing north and west, upper 50s to start your thursday morning, 66 in philadelphia and 63 in millville with the isolated thundershower late in the night north of philadelphia. a brief taste of fall here, high pressure is coming in over new
