good afternoon in the news a hero police officer is out of the hospital after he survived a shootout with the bombing suspect in new jersey. and we have an update with the pipeline leak that causes gas prices to go up in the delaware valley? but the big story is the violent clash with citizens and police. >> it started when police killed a man in the afternoon in charlotte, north carolina. within hours violence broke out with demonstrators blocking a major highway and looting a store. 16 officers were hurt and multiple police cars were damaged. ray joins us from new york. >> reporter: you mentioned the 16 officers were hurt and dozens of squad cars were destroyed. they say that keith lamont hill

run over with a car and beaten with a shovel. police arrested joel who are elwith the crime. the victim's family showed up hoping to face him in court. >> i'm here to represent my sister, her life did matter and i want to make sure that justice was served. >> lindsay's family tells she was a mother and grandmother and a dedicated worker at the university of pennsylvania. ahmad rahami faces attempted murder charges in connection with the bombings that rocked new york and new jersey on friday and over the weekend. this shows ahmad rahami about to plant bombs if his suit and backpack and the pressure cooker bomb he allegedly set off in manhattan was powerful enough to shatter windows 40 feet away. they are relying on rahami's

journal and social media accounts to learn more about his background. one of the injured police officers who was hurt in that shootout, that eventually led to the arrest of rahami is back home now and recovering in north jersey. officer peter hammer was hit by bullet fragments including some to his head. he told reporters at home he is touched by the report he has received. >> i appreciate the concern, but i need time to recover, shot in the forehead. i'm glad to be alive and glad to be home. >> the other officer injured took a direct hit to his bulletproof vest. he was released from the hospital earlier this week. both officers are expected to make a full recovery. the mayor targeted in the bridge gate scandal is back on the witness stand.

weakening a little bit. a brief sprinkle in southern delaware and south jersey and it's gone and the cloud as peer to thin out a bit. you'll have more clouds to the south than to the north. 82 in philadelphia, things are warming up nicely 79 in allentown and 82 in reading and 79 in trenton and 76 in cape may, new jersey. the dew points continue to drop down into the 50s in philadelphia, that is not what we consider humid air, anything over 60 is considered humid and the 70s in millville and cape pay, it's sticky down that way but the numbers are liable to fall off a bit in the afternoon. part of the reason we get the drier air moving in is the direction of the wind, from the north-northeast 12 miles per hour in philadelphia. we are going to go for a high of 86 this afternoon, this model has 84 at 4:00, look at how we fall off after that. 83 by 6:00 and down into the 70s

this evening and 73 by 10:00, getting down to the 60s in most neighborhoods overnight. when i step inside we have a cool down in the long-term forecast and it arrives in time for a football weekend in philadelphia. going to feel more like football weekend for temple and the eagles. details are coming up. >> thank you. the 6 abc weather balloon completed its four our journey, we launched it earlier this morning from berks county to gather forecasting data from the skies. we are joined live in bucks county by karen rogers where the balloon has landed. >> reporter: yes it has, i spent the morning tracking this balloon with the gps, the whole idea is to take you inside of the forecast. we have the best technology at channel 6, stormtracker 6 live double scan but the input from around the world comes from the weather balloons, and we launched one live this morning.

we are getting ready to fill the weather balloon, i'm turning it right now. >> it's a biodegradable weather balloon made of tree sap. they are the backbone of weather forecasts. more than 800 of them are launched worldwide twice a day. attached to the balloon are temperatures measuring pressure. and they can determine wind speed in the upper levels of the atmosphere. >> we have satellite but they are not in the atmosphere. they cannot sense the atmosphere so where the balloons are key for getting the model that noah uses. >> three, two, one! the 6 abc weather balloon launching look how rapidly it goes up there. it ascended 1,000 feet per minute. and it travels to the edge of the surface and then bursts and

a parachute carry its down along with a go pro camera that will show its video. >> i logged on to tase book and saw it live. >> it's amazing i have never seen anything like it. >> we should hear the signal strong in the next minute. >> we found the exact spot of the balloon on the edge of this open field, it didn't land there, way up to the highest tree, you see the orange parachute with the balloon dangling from it. we'll need ann arborist to help with this one. of course it had to land in a tree but when we get it out and get the go pro camera you'll see amazing shots. people were watching on tv and logging on to 6abc.com and tracking it too, on social media, as we were tracking it people were rolling down the windows, saying hey karen did you find the weather balloon yet in we were tallp doing this

this afternoon. the price of the drug rose 500% since 2007. now that her mother is accused of improperly promoting the epi pen. gale mention, the head of a national group led an organization to require schools to purchase epi pens. hundreds of new police officers will be working on the streets of chicago. the chicago pd will make 970 new hires over the next two years, that includes 500 patrol officers and 92 field officers and 200 detectives and 112 sergeants and 50 lieutenants, the decision comes after the city auto over 500 homicides this year alone and 2016 is considered to be the deadliest year in two decades in chicago. another american town is hoping to bolster its own police force but wants to pay for the officers by dramatically

meteorologist, david murphy is here now as we say so long to summer. >> we are exiting today is the last full day but it will feel like it. >> all right. >> it will feel great this weekend. >> sara is crying. >> she is very upset. stormtracker 6 live double scan we don't have any precipitation out there, a couple of sprinkles managed to come up in cape may county and southern delaware but they are gone. the action cam was there when we were doing battle with the clouds at fairmount park, beautiful flowers and gardens and a lot of rain but not sun, now we see more sun break through especially from philadelphia and points north. temperatures 82 degrees

currently and that dew point that started out in the upper 60s is now down to 59 and that is because of the northeast wind bringing dry air down at 12 miles per hour. and even down the shore where it is more humid you'll see the humidity level dip a bit in the afternoon. a bunch of 70s in trenton, allentown and lancaster and reading and 79 in millville and down at the shore 76 at cape may. this area of precipitation and low pressure center is the former tropical storm julia. it's traveling south and having a hard time coming north but at the same time it's producing the clouds. today is a clouds and sun mix, more clouds the farther south you go and more sun up north. up in the lehigh valley clouds and sun and nice and warm and 85 degrees, humidity levels are not a problem since this morning. 78 degrees the farther south you move along the coast and light winds overall. and fairly cloudy with sunny
