stopped. >> in fact the train came in much too fast before it crashed through the end of the line barrier at the hudson terminal near new york. it caused destruction and death and many injuries. it's thursday night and the big story is the investigation into the brutal accidents in hoboken, new jersey. authorities have no idea why the train came in too fast and didn't stop. but they know this at least one person was killed. fabiola de kroon bittar was hit by debris on the platform. and 114 people were injured and 50 were taken to the hospital. the train left spring valley new york at 7:23 and crashed in hoboken at 8:45. nora muchanic and chad pradelli are covering different angles.
6:01 pm
lets begin with nora live in hoboken. what is the latest information there? >> the ntsb had a meeting and there are two cameras mounted in two locations on the train and they hope that will tell them what happened. and also they have to get insood of that can my, remove the can my from the roof of the station and get to the engine that is embedded inside of there. someone used the word brutal and it was for the people on the train and on the platform today. >> i got a scratch and bruise but otherwise i'm okay. after the first shake i put my arms over my head so i wouldn't bang my head. >> the crash tore apart the building and killed a woman and injured 114. what caused the accident is being looked at by federal investigators. the engineer thomas gallagher
6:02 pm
was treated and released from the hospital and is cooperating with authorities. >> we will not speculate. we are in the midst of an investigation and i was called by the white house today as well. >> it looks really really bad and people bleeding everywhere and stunned and looking around and people on the grown. >> just running all over the place we didn't know what it was, we thought an explosion or terrorist attack and luckily it wasn't. >> i was able to stand up and there were people in front of me and i toppled over on them. >> passengers and rescue personal helped to lead the walking wounded away from the tangled wreckage and many were taken to local hospitals for treatment. a train from bear, delaware was on the scene in seconds to help. >> i saw bodies and blood and cracks in the head. it was crazy looking and didn't see the train and i saw the hole and i'm thinking bomb and i looked over further and saw the
6:03 pm
train in the wall. >> and says william blaine he could not believe what he saw. ocs have to look at the can my over the station and remove it and secure the area before they can get into the train inside of the station at this point they say it's not safe to go in there yet. and officials say that the speed limit going into the station is 10 miles per hour. clearly that wasn't happening and when this train arrived at the station they want to get the hans on the black box data recorders to know exactly what happened. i'm nora muchanic, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. >> the passengers say that the train was not traveling at peak speed but not slowly enough to come into the station safely. >> new jersey transit says none of their trains are fully equipped with what is called positive train control. it's designed to automatically slow or stop trains traveling too quickly.
6:04 pm
it's that train that came into question after the amtrak crash. the deadline has been repeatedly extended to install ptc. chad pradelli is live at the manayunk station where the safety system is in place, a system that may have made a huge difference today in hoboken. >> reporter: that is ruight jim. if a train is coming too fast into this stop or if the train needs to stop because there is through vehicle traffic ptc will do just that. positive train control is like big brother keeping an eye on speed and movement. this shows how ptc takes over if the train is traveling fast or
6:05 pm
needs to install a stop signal. >> it's mane to protect against workers and having an open switch and a train running into it. >> the head of septa calls ptc a game changer. so far septa has implemented the mandated technology on their rail lines and the rest will be done well before the december 2018 deadline. he would not comment on the accident in hoboken because of the investigation but complex terminals like there don't usually have ptc. >> it's not usual for you to put positive train control in a terminal where you have a lot of yard tracks, i don't know to what degree positive train control could be involved in a location like that. >> the latest rail accident was fresh in the rail riders and thinking about the deadly may 2015 crash of an amtrak train
6:06 pm
that just left the station. it was not installed on the train then but it is today. and they are happy that ptc is on the fast track to be fully implements but it's still a concern i ride the train every day. >> there is always a risk and you feel the risk. >> people need to check out more regularly to make sure the trains are safe. >> septa's general manager would not say that if to date ptc has prevented any accidents on septa's rail lines. i'm chad pradelli, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you chad. world news with david muir will have continuing coverage of the crash investigation and that is next at 6:30 after "action news." we have been alerting you to updates on this story all day long on the 6 abc app, right now can you find photographs taken by witnesses on the scene and raw video and live updates as

i had had no idea he was going to do this. >> tonight police sources tell me that christopher sewell did indeed have a criminal record but mostly for armed robberies, but nothing like the violent rampage that cost him his life in philadelphia. katie mcginty: franny, johnny, mikey, maureen, jimmy, joey, ricky, eileen, me, and colleen... all 10 of us raised on a policeman's salary and a mom working as a restaurant hostess. imagine trying to do that today, with washington looking out for the favored few. i'll bring a different point of view to the u.s. senate - working class roots and the mother of three, i'll put middle class families ahead of wall street. i'm katie mcginty and i approve this message because it's your turn to get ahead.

6:18 pm
flexor cox is the defensive player of the week. he has 14 tackles and a forced fumble. it's funny how many experts were wrong to start carson wentz three weeks ago. espn analyst ron jaworsky is the first admit he far surpassed his expectations. >> no player in the history of the nfl has started as fast as carson wentz has started. it's very uncommon for a quarterback in his first three games in his rookie season to play the way carson wentz is playing, everybody knows the numbers now and everybody knows the record is undefeated it's the way he has done t he is rock solid in the pocket, showing his mobility and leadership and ability to be humble nothing but
6:19 pm
good things ahead for carson wentz. it comes down to the man in charge and that is doug peterson. he has done a tremendous job through the first three regular ar season games and i expect it to continue and what we haven't seen is dumb, stupid penalties and delay of game penalties and wrong person on the field. doug peterson has managed this team very well. i expected to see big boy football when he came in and we are seeing big boy football. it's philadelphia -- it's never too early, we have never won a super bowl. philadelphia is the most passionate football town in america these fans want to see great football and they are seeing it through three games, they should be excited. i have a gut feeling this is a very special year. >> how about that. the phillies try to stave off a
