the first category 4 hurricane to hit haiti since 1964. the u.s. has deployed disaster teams to haiti and jamaica. we'll get the latest from cecily tynan and adam joseph and bob brooks is staked out in atlantic city. setly tell us about the potential track of this storm. >> reporter: and bearing down in eastern cuba, maximum sustained winds of 140 miles per hour. this is a monster storm and will is the eye it's beginning to collapse now. as it is interacting with cuba. and it looks to pass through the island today and the problem is that this storm system is maintaining its strength and moving very slowly. maximum sustained wins of 140 miles per hour and moving due north at 9 miles per hour and it looks like a ridge of high

pressure will push in from the northwest as it heads to the bahamas, still a cat 4, maximum sustained winds decreasing to 130 miles per hour, and here is the latest track. it has shifted well to the west in florida. there is potential for a major hurricane lan fall along the northeast coast of florida either at a cat 4 or cat 3. but then the latest track takes it again another potential landfall near the outer banks of north carolina by saturday afternoon and then it gets picked up and begins to accelerate up the coast by sunday afternoon off the coast of long island still as a hurricane. a cat 1 hurricane. you look at the center but have you to look at the entire cone. it should shift inland or farther out to sea. it depends on how it interacts. >> there is a couple of different scenarios that could

unfold. we are talking about our area four days from now, we are tracking energy with matthew we can see here by friday evening, off the coast of south carolina, this area of energy, a trough, a cold front. depending on the speed of this and speed and strength of matthew how they interact with one another. that is late saturday by noon time on sunday. if they interact and this trough is too strong it will kick this storm out to sea well to the south of the carolinas, but if this trough is very weak it will allow matthew to ride directly up the eastern seaboard. that is something we have to continue to follow. what we know today is that no matter the track we'll see some heavy rain in our region here on saturday. because the cold front will steal some moisture no matter what from matthew. the closest approach to the shore line would be saturday

night. the storm as of this morning shows the model off the coast rather than hugging our coastline that is some good news but still bring strong rip currents and rough surf. when cecily tynan comes back she will have the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast for you. lets switch live to bob brooks on the boardwalk in atlantic city. bob whether or not the shore take a substantial hit is unclear. but can we assume that lots of folks are getting ready any way >> reporter: well jim, any time you hear a storm of had magnitude are on its way people take precautions and preparations are made. as far as beaches go, you see what looks like a wall of sand, that is beach erosion and nobody wants any of that to get any worse. in brigantine the motto is better safe than sorry. crews are out piling up dirt to

the ultimate track of matthew. it could maintain category 4 status as it heads towards florida. this is a dangerous storm. in the short-term we have quiet weather this week. stormtracker 6 live double scan showing tonight we have dry conditions and clouds today and the easterly flow keeping temperatures in the 60s. philadelphia 65 right now and our high only 68 with the cloud cover and reading 63 and millville 64 and cape may 65. satellite 6 along with action radar showing with these wins out of the northeast pulling in cloud cover and overnight high pressure begins to nudge down, what that means tonight could have a bit of patchy fog and mostly cloudy skies and 55 to 58 degrees but tomorrow we break into at least partly sunny skies and tomorrow is a bit warmer than today. 72 degrees and morning fog giving way to sunshine and cape may cooler and more cloud cover there, 67 and wilmington 70

degrees. all eyes on hurricane matthew, hitting eastern cuba as a category 4 hurricane. the eye wall diminishing and collapses as it interacts with the cliffs over cuba and maximum sustained winds 140 miles per hour. it's southeast of miami and a big storm. tropical storm force winds extend 180 miles from the center even areas without a direct hit will be affected. these are the spaghetti plots. there is a good consensus bringing that storm to the coast of florida early on friday morning. could be a major katz category 3 hurricane and then good consensus bringing it to the carolinas saturday morning. and then you can see they fan

out. we are not exactly sure, will it take an inland tractor will it be kicked out to sea? what determines that is how it interacts with the trough, a cold front from the west. scenario number one shows the trough is weak and it can syphon the storm up the coast. if that happens we'll deal with nasty weather, late saturday into sunday, strong gusty winds and heavy rain and beach erosion, however if that trough is stronger, it can kick the storm out to sea. if that happens, we get some rain and wouldn't be all that intense and the heaviest offshore it's breezy and not damaging winds, either way we are looking at rough surf and beach erosion no matter if it takes an on shore tractor heads out to sea. i'll keep you posted. a nice day and morning fog and 72 and thursday mostly sunny and
