area of the campaigns come out, did you get a sense how they felt after this debate? >> reporter: well, certainly. we saw trump's campaign manager, kelly an conway, making her way to the room right away feeling confident their team won the debate, and they were really excited to talk to us journalists and say they really felt like he hit it right out of the park. >> all right, abc's lana zac, thank you so much. the republicans got a little ahead of themselves last night by prematurely declaring the winner of the debate. >> the official gop website announced mike pence was the clear winner more than an hour before the debate even started. >> oh. >> the site listed pence's top debate moments as well. the page was then taken down, but pence was later declared the winner again this time after the debate. >> i wonder moments they cited

were actually what happened. the big question, of course, what does this debate mean for both campaigns? >> abc political director rick klein joins us. >> reporter: did not take the debate, coming for a fight, but mike pence much more disciplined, much more calm in his demeanor and calmed nerves in republican circles going a long way towards that throughout the debate. mike pence showing why donald trump chose him, the anti-trump at the debate, and clearly tim kaine had a strategy, that strategy was to bait mike pence into a fight over donald trump's record. this was not a debate about issue. this was not a debate about the two men on stage. it was about the outside personalities of their running mates, neither of the running mates spent a lot of time defending their respective person at the top of the ticket,

investigators looking into the new jersey commuter train

crash should soon have major new clues. the video and data recorders are both being analyzed after being recovered from the front of the wrecked train. the key question will be answered, how fast the train was going when it hit the station. engineer said he was traveling the speed limit, but investigators say it may have been two or three times that. also in new jersey, a powerful gas explosion rocked a neighborhood in patterson destroying two homes, and another building so badly damaged will be taken down. fire crews who have been called to the scene because of a gas smell evacuated nearby residents of the northern new jersey city before the blast. los angeles police department released video of an armed teenager before he was shot dead by an officer. the video shows the young man crouching behind an suv behind a strip mall and pulling a handgun from the waistband of the sweat pants. it does not show the shooting, sparking days of protests including at this police commission meeting. >> if you don't have a seat

abortion, pence said donald trump is not a polished politician. given how many people distrust politicians, does that work for them or that comment come back to haunt him? >> they said this a lot through the past campaign, and i think a lot of voters like that. donald trump's voters are so loyal, but this quote, just over 30 days from the campaign, i think that the voters are worried about donald trump want more of those polished politician comments as those other comments have been getting him in trouble even through last week. >> speaking of comments, there were so many interesting moments last night. what did you think stood out the most? >> well, one of the moments, i think, that we'll talk about and remembering is the back and forth over this insult-driven campaign. tim kaine and mike pence accused each other of an insult-driven campaign, and mike pence tried to turn it around on the clinton campaign, which, of course, is interesting because insults have really been a hallmark of donald

trump and his campaign, so much so that even during this debate, donald trump was retweeting insults on tim kaine, and hillary clinton pointed it out by tweeting it out during the debate. it's a hard argument for pence to get away from. >> absolutely. >> quickly, how did this impact the race now that the debate is done? >> there's no clear winner from this. i think both came to do what they had to do. for tim kaine, hillary clinton had a bump from the last campaign, he wants to continue that momentum, and for mike pence, he wants to assure voters this is a steady choice for voters. >> it does set up excitement for sunday's big showdown, debate -- >> oh, absolutely. >> between the presidential candidates, and thank you for being here with us. >> any time. >> "the mix" is next.

punches as he could to see what landed opposed to being stra techniquics. it didn't seem to work for him. >> he was not happy how kaine looked, and he interrupted 60 times, pence 37 times, so that said, any sense that this debate will have an impact with undecided voters? >> reporter: well, heading into this, we also heard from some people that because of the very high unfavorability ratings of the two people at the top of the ticket, that undecided voters may look at the two candidates to help them decide who they should cast ballots for, but after this debate, i don't think it's going to be any easier for them to decide between hillary clinton and donald trump. instead, we hear a lot of people who are looking forward to the next debate and potentially even the one that follows it. >> what are campaigns saying now that it's all over? >> reporter: well, that's easy. they both said they won. >> yeah.
