have to prepare the county, so it could be the biggest evacuation ever. >> reporter: matthew potentially the worst storm to hit the sunshine state in a daze, strengthening in open water, winds over 120 miles per hour, reeking hack havoc in the caribbean for 24 hours, landing in eastern cuba, leveling a town. officials in haiti still trying to assess the damage. the main bridge that connects to the heart itself is washed out, and officials postponing sunday's presidential election indefinitely. lindsey davis is on the ground. >> reporter: people worried about landslides and cholera. it's difficult to know the full extent of the damage on this island because in some of the areas most impacted by hurricane matthew, communication has been cut off. >> reporter: matthew now barrelling towards the bahamas. and in nassau, airports closed, residents who stayed behind are fearing the worst. >> my stomach has me telling

this one might be bad. >> reporter: 3500 guests in hotels. 3,000 people riding out this iconic hotel, 90% americans, spending the night in a conference room turned into a shelter. >> reporter: now with 24 hours to go, florida and much of the southeast tracking this storm's every move. >> we're going to get whatever comes at us, imagine a category 2, we're in trouble. >> has been a while, but the others are just like tropical storms, whatever, this is a little scary. >> reporter: residents force to choose, evacuate or stock up. supplies running low. tempers running high. >> this is the line. i've already been to three gas stations that are shut down because they are out of gas. >> reporter: these lines are long, but these people are the lucky ones because most of the gas stations in this area already ran out of gas. the governor calling up 500 national guards groups, and the president warning residents. >> if you get an evacuation order, just remember that you can always rebuild.

hurricane matthew bearing down now on the bahamas expected to gain strength today heading towards florida's east coast. we're tracking the storm every step of the way. frightening moments playing out on a southwest airlines flight in louisville as smoke filled the cabin before the plane even taxied to the runway. >> a passenger says his samsung smart phone started burning, but this was not a fire-prone phone, but one of the replacements. >> reporter: what happened in this jet at the gate at louisville could mean bigger trouble for samsung. accordsing in according to a passenger, it was his smoking burning replacement note 7 phone. >> i noticed smoke pouring out of my pocket, threw that on to the ground where it continued to smoke and burn and smolder into the carpet. >> reporter: he powered down as
