"action news" delaware valley's leading news program. with rick williams, sara bloomquist, and meteorologist, david murphy. good afternoon hurricane conditions are slamming florida at this hour. hundreds of thousands of home are without power at this hour. as matthew slashes the state with heavy rain and violent wind and the storm is heading to georgia next. they believe the worst is yet to come with a storm surge up and down the coast.

i'm rick williams, sara bloomquist is off. lets get the ratest now from abc's marcy gonzales, following the storm near daytona beach. >> reporter: hi, good afternoon. we are feeling the affects of hurricane matthew, that choppy water is not the ocean but the indian river, it is already flooding over the sea here and the wind is intense overnight into the morning strong enough two bring down trees and large branches and it's not letting up just yet. >> hurricane matthew's high brushing and battering florida's east coast. wind gusts are surpassing 100 miles per hour bringing down trees and power lines. leaving hundreds of thousands of people in the dark. but the major concern is flooding. starting in central florida already with forecasters saying that the worst is yet to come with the possible storm surge as much as 11 feet in some places. >> i between emphasize to

everybody that this is still a really dangerous hurricane. >> already at least one hurricane related death reported in port st. lucie, florida and in haiti nearly 300 killed and entire communes leveled. and matthew moving north towards jacksonville. >> there is potential for significant flooding there. >> they are evacuating parts of georgia and the carolinas. >> you need to get oust there. >> communities there are bracing for the destructive affects of matthew next. >> to understand the seriousness of this storm -- >> reporter: yes, we are seeing just how serious this storm is. though the extent of the impact here is not really clear because of all of this wind and flooding it's still too dangerous for anyone to come out here and assess the damage. live in new smyrna beach,

florida. channel 6 "action news" back to you. matthew is now moving north as marcy mentioned and still has time to make a direct hit somewhere in the southeast. melissa magee is track it's storm's path from the "action news" big board. >> the latest update has the center of matthew offshore and off the coast of florida. here is stormtracker 6 live double scan radar, you can see the center of the storm just off the coast of daytona beach. it's about 95 miles to the south and east of jacksonville florida. you see all the heavy rain and wind battering the east coast of georgia and the carolinas. here is the latest. maximum sustained winds 120 miles per hour, a category 3 storm. it's moving to the north-northwest at 12 miles per hour. and into tonight it will cross over the florida coast and into georgia and as we get foo the

weekend by saturday morning, this track has it weakening to a category 2 storm over the carolinas and then a loop around and back to the bahamas as early as monds into tuesday. sustained winds with this storm. 39 miles per hour for savannah and charleston and 50 miles per hour at the immediate coastline and also into wilmington. we have been issue with sustained winds but there is a bigger concern with storm surge for areas in the carolinas up through areas in georgia as well. because there is a lot of low country. we are talking storm surge from 7 to 11 feet aboveground and especially for the red shaded area from savannah to jacksonville and even daytona beach, florida, as well. we'll have the latest on hurricane matthew coming up and

update and any new information coming up with the full accuweather forecast. >> thank you melissa. matthew has continued to disrupt air travel to and from the southeast. more than 4500 flights have been canceled nationwide. "action news" reporter, katherine scott is monitoring the impact at philadelphia international airport. >> reporter: rick, it really depends on where you are going, a number of people showed up at the airport and they had no problem and boarded their flight and off they went but if you fly to the southeast you could have issues. we are by the security line and it's moving pretty well and there are issues in atlantic and savannah airport is closed until sun morning and limited service in charleston and 3500 flights canceled so far from wednesday to saturday due to this hurricane. travellers checked in at philadelphia international airport with hurricane matthew bearing down on florida. there was uncertainty for

passengers how it would affect their plans. >> i am flying back home west virginia via charlotte. i know it's affecting north carolina but only coastal north carolina, i hope that charlotte that is inland won't be affected. >> there are cancellations on the board and you could run into trouble especially if your flight was to georgia or south carolina or florida. >> so far so good. >> you come into the airport when there are delays in other places, it's the luck of the draw, but so far it seems to be going well. >> all flights at orlando and jacksonville airports are canceled today. but elsewhere the news is improving. service slowly being restored in miami but limited capacity and the airport is open in ft. lauderdale. shuttle driver ken is keeping an

this is a live picture from daytona beach, florida. look at that surf there as the hurricane conditions continue to slam into the sunshine state. anything but sunshine now that is for sure. florida, georgia and south carolina bracing for the worst of hurricane matthew. people are evacuating animals because of the hurricane. the humane society picked up dogs from the shelters. they wanted to make room just in case they had to care for animals of possible blood victims. central kansas has dealt with severe weather, this is one of 18 tornadoes reported in the

state yesterday. most were rural areas. no injuries fortunately. the train that slammed into hoboken terminal last week is removed from the station. they pulled the train from the terminal last night and will undergo further investigation. they have released new information, the data recorder and video revealed that it sped up and was going 21 miles per hour before hitting the platform. the engineer says he has no memory of the collision. >> police! police! >> one person is in custody after a fight broke out outside of a detroit courthouse. after the murder of a pregnant woman. after yesterday's arraignment, the victim's uncle threw punches at a relative of the suspect.

temperatures in the lower 70s. cooler at the numbers there in the 6:00. 8:00 in the morning on saturday, a cloudy start to our day but we stay dry in the morning hours, as we get foot afternoon hours sometime around 12:00 or 3:00, you'll notice the showers streaming across the region and they continue through the rest of the early evening hours on saturday. in the wake of that a fall cool down that is good for this region because it protects us from matthew. we have a dip in the jet stream as we get into the latter half of our weekend. but with the dip in the jet stream it allows matthew to loop back around off the southeast coast. here is the latest with matthew, winds sustained at 120 miles per hour, a category 3 storm, and moving to the north northwest at 12 miles per hour. moving over the florida coast and into georgia later on

tonight. as we get into the weekend it moves over the carolinas, and then does this loop deloop back near the bahamas as we get into early next week. it's something we are tracking closely and big storm surges are a big concern for the east coast and heavy rain from 3 inches to 10 inches across the area. the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast showing you today it's partly sunny and 75 for a high and saturday mostly cloudy and i think the day starts out nice and dry and no issues we max out at 70 degrees and the rain arrives into saturday afternoon and into saturday night. we clear out quickly by sunday, mostly sunny and breezy and a cool one a high of just 68 degrees, sunny and cool on monday and 64 degrees, tuesday a partly sunny skies high temperature coming in at 68. and then on wednesday more clouds around and a high of 70 and the sun roars back on thursday with a high temperature coming in at 71 degrees.
