its way up the atlantic coast. the storm may have weakened overnight, but the hurricane force winds are being felt in the popular resort town of hilton head and prich s island, south carolina. good morning, i'm alicia vitarelli. the big story is on hurricane matthew, the storm was felt in georgia and south carolina. waves were seen crashing over a sea wall in charleston. the stormed is blamed on killing four people in florida. more than a million homes and businesses are without power this morning in the sunshine state. it has left a wide swath of damage including this church spire that toppled in jacksonville, florida. it's a story that we are following for you, of course, the effects felt in a few

states. we're going to lauren lister in new smyrna beach, florida with the latest on matthew, lauren. >> reporter: good morning, it is hard to believe less than 24 hours ago you could barely walk where i am as hurricane matthew battered the area. it left behind down trees and worse and now it continues to move north. the deadly hurricane wreaks havoc as it moves up the coast. flooding roads and downing trees, and driving cars off the road. on a erie light show on this highway as multiple power lines explode. the powerful category two hurricane has weakened, but continues to show its force bringing winds gusts up to 80 miles per hour. states of emergency declared in georgia, south carolina and

north carolina. >> the best thing is to hunger down and stay in a safe place. >> reporter: this after pummeling florida. >> sounded like a train. as matthew barreled through palm coast, a home security captures as rushing water crashes into a home. full roads getting washed away. saint augustine one of the hardest hit areas, water flooding downtown streets trapping dozens at this inn. 26,000 people are riding it out at the shelters in the caroline analysis, thousands are without power on the georgia coast. in florida, more than a million people are without power. now, as cleanup begins, residents hearing it could be a weak before they have their electricity back. live in new smyrna beach, florida, i'm lauren lister, abc news. >> thank you. wishing them all the best as the is them continues to move up. it's been hard to watch at

points because just a storm this size. >> reporter: the good news the storm was well advertised. evacuations were made, the damage will ends up being severe, injuries and fatalities will be kept to a minimum in the united states. >> and people listened. >> reporter: they did, they got out of dodge. our weather here in the delaware and lehigh valleys, talk about matthew in just a second. in the meantime we start out with a view of the commodor barry bridge. we have a thick overcast starting to overspread the region. some of this moisture in advance of hurricane matthew working onshore south of charlie ton, south carolina. temperatures are mild, 62 in philadelphia. allentown, 57. reading, 57. 67 in cape may. trenton, 58. dover, 64. all this moisture is lifting to the north associated with a cold front that's working east.

evacuated. >> lake surfing. it gives you an idea of the intensity of the storm. >> reporter: the winds are over 08 miles per hour. this is the where the eye wall is situated right now. you can see the band of red north of charleston, that's the eye wall where the strongest winds are located, right about here, it stretches like that, let's stop the laps real quick and show you what's going on. basically you have the center right here, or the eye, the winds are wrapping around like this, around it. so up here, we get all the storm surge this is where all the water kind of piles in from the atlantic. this is where the severe storm surge is from charleston, north, from savannah south, the winds are blowing offshore, it's wrapping around in a counter clockwise fashion. we're not seeing much of the storm surge down to the south. it's this area here that's

getting hit and hit hard of we have a couple of buoys this one is off the -- let me clear that for you real quick. off the coast of south carolina with gusts 50 miles per hour and wave heights of 25 feet. this is northeast of the center or the eye wall that's what's getting ready to work onshore. for us back home. we're not seeing anything right now. some of the moisture from hurricane matthew is going to get drawn or lifted northward over the next 12 to 24 hours. we could see wet weather here later on as a result. 62 degrees in philadelphia. dewpoint, 58. pressure is falling. winds out of the northeast at 5 to 10 miles per hour. 50s to the northwest low 60s to the southeast. millville, 62. cape may, 67. dover, 64.

57 for reading and allentown. these are the feeder bands of hurricane matthew working across the virginias and the carolinas. some of that gets lifted northward for the next few hours. lunchtime it's mainly cloudy, wet weather south and west at that point. mostly cloudy, though. as the afternoon progresses even though the modeling is not showing much, expect showers later on. transitioning over to a steady, soaking rain for south jersey and delaware. there's forecast models that suggest one to two inches of rain for the jersey shore. afternoon it's clouds and sunshine we'll start to dry out. sunday is not a bad day, damp in the morning, by afternoon it's bright and sunny. here's a look at hurricane matthew. there's charleston, south carolina. there's the infared satellite image. soaking rains off to the northwest, the storm is moving

to the northeast. it's hugging the coastline. a tremendous mendsous amount of rain. not only are they seeing -- tremendous amount of rain. not only are they seeing the storm surge they are seeing a lot of rain. in the next 24, 48 hours, 12 inches of rain. charleston, 6 inches. the track brings i tell off to the northeast. it's a category 2 with maximum stained winds of 105 miles per hour. drifting off to the north-northeast. it will wrap around and approach the approximate -- bahamas. afternoon showers, highs in the

everyone, 6:24 saturday morning, the eye wall of hurricane matthew is coming onshore. there's hilton head, this is savannah and this is charleston. it's difficult to see, with you it will wrap around the entire center. the center of the storm is starting to drift toward the north here at 12 to 15 miles per hour. what's happening the center of the storm is right here, as i described earlier in the broadcast, the winds wrap around the storm in a counter clockwise fashion, as it's heading up the coast, all the water is getting drawn in. not only are you seeing what caused the storm surge or this rush of water, it's coinciding with high tide.

we're seeing storm surge anywhere from 6 to 12 feet north of the center of the storm. the good news, as the storm works out to sea like this, the winds flip on the other side we get an offshore breeze and some of the water will be allowed to recede. the next 12 to 24 hours will be terrorizing for folks down here, if they have not evacuated because of the storm surge and rainfall totals we're seeing with hurricane matthew. the spaghetti plots take the loop and arc it back around and into the bahamas and southern part of florida is as we get into the middle of next week. the good news it is not heading north. all the effects of hurricane matthew stay down here in the southeastern part of the united states. >> chris, thank you. sports this morning, eagles wanted no part of the sun as they prepared for the game against the lions.

before 3:00 a.m. a passing motorist saw flames shooting from the first floor and called 911. nobody was hurt, and no word on what sparked the blaze. this morning police are looking for whoever threw rocks at a school bus and injured a boy on board. chopper copper was above the scene in the city's logan section at 4:30 p.m. they say a window was shattered after scwun -- someone hurled rocks at the bus. the boy was hurt but not seriously. these are suspects of a home invasion that ended with a st. joe's university student tied up and robbed. scary stuff. two suspects trying various windows and doors on the 6600 block of woodbine avenue in wynnfield. they climbed into a third floor window, one covers a light with clothing to hide their activity. one was armed with a gun and

large hunting knife. they stole a purse and electronics and the victim's car. a popular halloween attraction in berks county has become the target of thieves. $1,000 in power tools were taken from a haunted house under construction. they belong to a volunteer who was working on building the attraction. proceeds go to local organizations and students. from our new jersey newsroom, atlantic city is taking a step toward fixing its financial troubles and a voiding a state takeover. mayor guardian sent a letter to city workers offering an early buyout. employees with 20 years on the job quaff for the program. they have until october 17 to decide whether they want to accept the offer. atlantic city is five hundred million dollars in debt. psychologic thriller, the

where reports vary from 300 to 900 dead. winds destroyed homes and making matters worse, the southern part of the country is cut off from humanitarian aid because of a collapsed bridge. nine u.s. military helicopters will deliver the relief efforts and the navy is sending a ship loaded with 300 marines. matthew continues to make its way up the eastern seaboard. >> the most dangerous part of the storm is not the rain, not the wind, it's the storm surge the wall of water forced inland. think if you're down in sea isle city you're looking at the oceanfront, the tide is racing in, the back bays are filling up. the roads heading into the barrier islands are under water there's no escape. same thing happens everywhere along the coast. when you have a storm surge like

this, that's why the evacuations are made, if you choose to stay, you see unprecedented flooding along the coral -- carolinas. we're seeing the clouds increase in advance of hurricane matthew. showers expected later on. 95% of the storm is going to miss us to the south. just a few showers later on that's it. temperature in philadelphia, 62 degrees. dewpoint, 58. pressure falling off from 30.11 inches. winds out of the northeast at 5 miles per hour. mid 50s north and west, low 60s south and east, dover 64. cape may, 67 degrees. satellite and radar showing the moisture lifting to the north, clouds lowering and thickening it's a dry morning. we'll see wet weather later on, right after lunch, noon, 1:00 p.m. some of this moves in southwest to northeast. we're not looking at a tremendous amount of rain.

it's enough to put a damper on your out door plans. bring along an umbrella and be prepared for showers later on. clouds approaching later and showers this afternoon. if it wasn't for this front we wouldn't see any wet weather out of this. the front will kick matthew out to sea and we'll see cooler canadian air move in. tomorrow it will feel really, really nice, nice and fall like. future tracker 6, 1:00 p.m., showers south south anne west, they will advance north an east. even though the modeling will be dry, we'll see wet weather breaking out between 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. it will last into the overnight. some of it coming down at a good clip across south jersey and delaware. jersey shore, clearing in the late afternoon, the afternoon really nice, lots of sunshine, nice comfortable breeze, temperatures in the 60s.

there's hurricane matthew, the eye wall, there's savannah and hilton head. the water is being forced out to sea on the other side because of the rotation of the winds. it's up here we'll see the worst conditions over the next 12 to 24 hours. there's the center of circulation riding parallel to the florida coast now starting to make that turn towards the right and eventually out to sea. maximum sustained winds 105 miles per hour. category 2 on the scale. moving off to the northeast at 12 miles per hour. it might wrap around again and move over the bahamas again and approach the southern at this point of florida. this time around it would be a much weaker storm with maximum sustained winds of 30 to 35 miles per hour. you have a good 24 to 36 hours

the storm may have weakened overnight, but the hurricane force winds are being felt in hilton head. right now matthew is a category 2 storm moving north off south carolina's coast. good saturday morning, i'm alicia vitarelli. the big story is on hurricane matthew. the storm was felt in georgia and south carolina overnight. waves were seen crashing over a sea wall in charleston. some of south carolina's historic cities are feeling the wrath. 150,000 people in the palmetto state are without power. so far the storm is being blamed on four deaths in florida. more than 1 million homes and businesses are without power this morning in the sunshine state. it has left a wide swath of damage including the church spire that toppled in jacksonville, florida. we'll turn to lauren lister,
