"world news now." >> good morning, everybody, i'm kendis gibson. i'm not afraid to shake your hand. >> no? >> no, absolutely, yes. >> hopefully we'll be nicer. >> i'll lurk behind you. >> i'm diane macedo. we have a lot to talk about this morning, end the rematch in st. louis. hillary clinton and donald trump unleashing a barrage of attacks in debate number two. >> tension obvious from the onset, opting out of the handshake, and donald trump tries to recover from a video that rocked his campaign just before the debate. he appeared with three of bill clinton's accusers, and a rape victim whose attacker was represented by hillary clinton. karen travers is joining us right now. good morning. >> good morning, kendis and diane. if you expected fireworks last night, you got them. for days, donald trump laid out the debate playbook making it
3:02 am
very clear he thought bill clinton's past was not just fair game, but also very critical to the election conversation. well, the key question last night, then, was would he hold his fire like he did in the first debate? that answer came very quickly, and the personal attacks did not stop there. straight out of the gate, the tension was clear. no handshake between the two bitter rivals. donald trump under fire for that 2005 audio recording with his crude comments about women. >> this was locker room talk. i'm not proud of it. i apologize to my family. i apologize to the american people. >> reporter: hillary clinton with days to prep her response saying trump is not fit to be president. >> i think it's clear to anyone who heard it that it represents exactly who he is. >> reporter: and then 15 minutes in, trump goes nuclear, accusing former president bill clinton of sexual misconduct. >> if you look at bill clinton, far worse.

3:04 am
trail today. >> absolutely. after a rough 48 hours, unlike anything seen before, what do pundits say, did he stop the bleeding? >> reporter: he did. that's what donald trump's goal was last night. it was an incredible weekend. you had many republicans saying he should drop out of the race, and many elected figu officials gave him support withdrew, incoming john mccain who stood byrump in a very rocky period and despite strong personal attacks. donald trump comes out last night, and he was not a disaster for those republicans, and in that sense, it's a win for him because tomorrow morning, this week, next couple days, you're not going to see this steady line, steady drum beat of republicans hammering donald trump like you saw over the weekend. >> and, karen, something unorthodox, before the debate started, donald trump held his own press conference with accusers of bill clinton.
3:05 am
did that work, that strategy, do you think of him bringing up that and having the women there, and was hillary's response, they go low, we go high, was that enough? >> reporter: yeah, diane, i don't think he gained anything out of it. like we said, donald trump had indicated for days that he was going to go after bill clinton so this was not a surprise to the clinton campaign. she was prepared. she knew how to answer the questions last night, but that facebook live appearance was a surprise, popping up out of nowhere. three women who accused bill clinton of sexual misconduct, but what were they hoping to get out of it? they certainly got a burst of activity on the cable networks before the debate, but once the debate started, it was ultimately about donald trump's answer to that audio recording from 2005, and then his own attacks against bill clinton. now, as for hillary clinton's answer, i think it was successful. she didn't answer the question at all. she clearly didn't want to go there. you know, if you're going to avoid an answer, why not bring

3:07 am
respect by saying she's a fighter. that says a lot. abc karen travers live, thank you. moving on now, and hillary clinton said she felt great about the debate, but added she was surprised by, quote, the absolute avalanche of falsehoods. >> mike pence said it was a big debate win for trump and proud to stand with him. for more, let's go to abc chief political analyst matthew dowd. >> in this debate, trump was behind falling in the polls. he did not improve himself. he needs a win, and he needed a win. i think when you look at points in the debate, over the course of the don't. he did fine at moments, she did fine in moments, lows on both sides, but basically, get out slight points to her winning the debate, but makes no difference in the polls. she walks out of the debate with a solid lead that she came into the debate with, and donald trump has one opportunity left, the next debate that changes dynami dynamics. >> and that third and final debate takes place on wednesday,

doesn't have the discipline according to clinton. how effective was the confrontational approach was? >> reporter: good morning, dian. i think not that effective if your goal is to get more voters over to your campaign, and, of course, win the election. why? because these voters here in the united states have made it clear they do not want to get down in the gutter with these candidates anymore. and, tonight, we saw them get in the gutter more than we've seen before starting at the very beginning. as you said, no handshake, but then also donald trump's signaling a new strategy in the campaign bringing in the bill clinton accusers from decades ago, sitting them in the audience, and so it's a real new low from an already pretty low campaign. >> and trump offered an apology for the 2005 recording of him talking about women. do you think he did enough to put that issue behind him? >> reporter: i think with some voters, it definitely won't be enough. he, again, blamed it on that
