"action news" reporter, christie ileto is live at the scene. the crash site on east lyndon avenue. christie, what is the latest on this? >> reporter: well, jim, the feds work to uncover what went wrong here. while they work to uncover what went wrong here, five to ten minutes we see people driving past to marvel what's left of the crash site. with all the homes in this area, it's a miracle the pilot was able to steer clear of them ending up in the shrubs of someone's backyard.

>> crazy. >> nuts. >> reporter: residents can't grasp how this crashed in their neighborhood narrowly missing dozens of homes. >> it sounded like a trash truck like when they go down. >> my buddy says look. i turn around and it's coming right at me. >> reporter: he saw the plane flying too low seconds before impact. >> all of a sudden, i hear it over my roof. >> reporter: police say the 66-year-old pilot and the 72-year-old passenger were trapped under the aircraft. >> thank god for the trees. it was able to protect everything. what day do you come home and there's a plane in your yard. >> reporter: the men semiunconscious, unable to communicate when they were extracted. >> it really looked like he wasn't too bad. i thought it was going to be a lot worse than it is. >> reporter: it took off in medford. the family that owns the plane

says it's registered in maryland where they live. they rented it out to a man in delaware who intended to go flying with his friend. >> something went wrong with the airplane. typically, airplanes like this suffer from engine fall yur and that results in the off airport landings. >> reporter: aviation expert says the faa is looking at a number of factors including the plane's mechanics. residents are grateful it wasn't worse. >> by the grace of god, everybody is okay. >> nothing but the grace of god with this one. >> reporter: now, the pilot and passenger were taken to cooper university hospital. the faa will get their opportunity to begin the investigation by looking at what's left of this airport. reporting live, christie ileto, channel 6 "action news."

jim? >> thank you, christie. faculty at 14 pennsylvania state universities walked off the job this morning. contract negotiations between the pennsylvania state system of higher education and the faculty union hit an impasse. at issue, pay raises, increase cost of medical benefits. the strike kept 100,000 students out of class today. two philadelphia police officers fired after they say he refused to drop a rifle. it happen d on the 6300 block after 6:00. officers responded to a domestic call. they arrived to find a 55-year-old man at the front door holding rifle. police say he ignored commands to put it down and pointed the rifle at them. that's when they shot the suspect in the arm. he was taken to the hospital, expected to be okay. a man in his late teens died after gunfire in west

philadelphia. he was shot in the shoulder in the 3500 block of wallace street. he was rushed to penn hospital where he was pronounced dead. the search continues for three suspects at rittenhouse square. they are trying to come to grips with the sense of unease. let's go to the square with "action news" reporter, dann cuellar. dann? >> reporter: jim, residents and others say problems here have been simmering for about a year. some say they are not surprised it got to the point where you saw the violence of last night. >> i think it's becoming a problem. >> reporter: for four years, mike has been juggling for children here at riddenhouse square. >> a lot of young kids who were, you know, doing what they do when they smoke things. certain corners with pot use and

pot dealers. >> syringes from the heroin use. it had to come to this poipt of an actual shooting for people to wake up and say we need to do something. >> some say since the city shut down love park, the problems migrated here. in march, a bucks county man was stabbed. in a letter to members, the president of the friends of rittenhouse square says in addition to illegal activities, an increase in the homeless population in the square due to construction at love park. the president urges its members to write the mayor and city council to express concerns. tonight, a heavy police presence in and around the square, which was reassuring. >> i'm not afraid to walk here. there's no issues for me. >> reporter: last night's shooting left others feeling uncomfortable. >> just as a warning to us, i

a gas explosion rocked a popular shopping area in portland, oregon today. it leveled one building and damaged many others sending debris flying into the streets. eight people were injured. city officials say it could have been disastrous if it had pt been for the quick work of responders. they evacuated the area before it ignited. a construction crew hit a gas
