difficult job for crews. in fact, they are out here six hours later working on all of this. a contractor came out to work on a water heater and accidentally hit a gas line. >> they told us to get out, it was going to be bad. >> reporter: residents lined the streets after authorities told them they have to evacuate because of a gas leak. one man left so quickly, he didn't have time to grab a pair of shoes. another was worried sick while he waited for permission to get his dog. >> they said don't worry about it, basically, is what they said. >> reporter: the fire department said around 4:00, a contractor was working on a water heater when he accidentally hit the gas line. he held it together while crews arrived. 45 firefighters responded along with 11 apparatus. >> standing by on either side of the street. they had to hook to the hydrants. >> reporter: pico responded to

shut the power off. >> i came here to have dinner with my daughter because it's her birthday. i bought her a gorgeous cake. she made dinner and guess what? no power. >> no cake, no dinner. >> they had the house ventilated. the gas was venting out into the air and dissipated. >> reporter: and neighbors were allowed to go back in a couple hours ago. that part, the leak is already handled. crews are out here replacing the main. they could be here throughout the night. reporting live in south philadelphia, jeanette reyes, chnl 6 "action news." marijuana candy rv caught fire. it happened about 6:00. the flame and smokes could be seen for miles.

this was a promotional rv for the weed world candy company. all the candy was destroyed. this firy scene in west philadelphia was the end result after two cars collided this morning. the driver of one of the vehicles is alive thanks to the bravery of a bystander. the woman was struck by a speeding suv at the intersection of 53 and chestnut street. the vehicle burst into flames. an unidentified man was able to pull the woman from the car and drag her to safety. the flames reached the awning of a grocery store, setting it on fire and forced police to evacuate nearby apartments. the injured woman and the driver of the suv per taken to penn pres tier ya. a philadelphia police officer was knocked off his bicycle by a driver in a stolen vehicle. you are looking at a picture of the scene right now. it happened about an hour ago on

the 1800 block of east russell street. the officer fell off his bike. he continued on to port richmond. a woman is in critical condition after a fire broke out inside her home in port richmond. the dog saved her life and the lives of so many others on the block. "action news" reporter, dann cuellar has the story. >> reporter: you know the saying, a dog is a person's best friend. it proved true overnight for a woman in her 60s. neighbors are calling the dog a hero for waking them up to let them know there was a fire. the scene was in port richmond. her dog started barking. >> her dog is really protective of her. if you go past the house, it barks and that kind of stuff. >> reporter: it's unusual for her to bark that early in the morning. >> when i looked out the bedroom window, flames. >> reporter: when firefighters arrived, they found the dog on top of her. >> the dog stayed on top of her

to provent her from being burned totally. >> reporter: that's how the firefighters found her? >> yes, with the dog on top of her. >> reporter: she was taken to the hospital listed in critical with burns on 50% of your body. they used oxygen to resuscitate the dog. neighbors say he is a hero. >> it's a beautiful thing. i always heard stories of where animals would help save their owners. i never livered one. now i have lived one. i seen it with my own eyes. >> because of the dog being there, that really saved her. if the dog wasn't there, she probably would be dead. >> if it wasn't for the dog barking -- tell me about it. >> reporter: a spokesperson says shay, who is at least 10 years old is an 80 pound mixed chow and golden retriever. it's unserve if he will survive because of the smoke inhilation and his age.

i'm dann cuellar, channel 6 "action news." former pennsylvania attorney general will learn her fate tomorrow when she's sentenced in the courtroom in montgomery county. she could get 12-24 years behind bars after being convicted of perjury and obstruction charges. she leaked material to a newspaper and lied about it under oath. lawyers are pushing for probation or house arrest. prosecutors want her to serve at least two years in prison. the campaign came to philadelphia as democrats worked to solidify support for hillary clinton among women. joe biden's wife, jill, teamed up with anne holton, the wife of tim kaine. they spoke at the community college of philadelphia focusing on pay equality for women. >> minimum wage workers are women with children many trying to get by paycheck tor paycheck.

in iraq. u.s. military is on hand helping

local fighters reclaim the city of mosul. u.s. secretary of defense, ash carter arrived in iraq as well. he says the operation is a year in the making and says everything is going according to plan. they have been using waves of suicide bombers, ieds and drones. dozens of iraqi soldiers died in the fighting along with one american. a flight from philadelphia to boston was delayed after a couple gained unauthorized access to the plane. the flight was set to take off at 8:00 a.m. two hours before take off, a man and woman walked through the jetway and grabbed two seats. airline officials figured out what was going on during boarding. they had tickets for the flight but became confused and boarded through the wrong entry way. another plane was used out of an abundance of caution.

13 people died when a tour bus rear ended a semitruck on a california freeway this morning. 31 others were injured. officials say the usa holiday tour bus was traveling much faster than the semi. the impact was so strong, the bus went 15 feet into the trailer. it hasn't been determined if alcohol, drugs, fatigue or something else played a role in the fatal collision. [ gunfire ] scary moments when a man started shooting at a police cruiser earlier this morning near fresno, california. the officer had a civilian in the car for a ride along. the suspect weaved through the neighborhood and a passenger shot at the police cruiser. it narrowly missed hitting the officer and the civilian. police are looking for the shooter. >> my goodness. a look at the accuweather forecast is next. >> melissa magee will have all
