"action news" reporter vernon odom live in norristown now with more on that. vernon. >> reporter: good evening to you monica and to rick. the current setup of the attorney general's office was designed to be an independent corruption busting crime busting post. that is still its mission but it's also become a sweet spot for those who have higher political ambitions. >> i think she had a very, very bright political future and she has destroyed it. >> reporter: a legal expert looked at the fall of kathleen kane who held the attorney general's office that first became an elected post back in 1980. it had been a position in the governor's cabin before that.

soon it became a plum job for politicians with higher ambitions because they'd already won a statewide election. >> traditionally prosecutors, district attorneys, attorney general, enjoy great favorability with the public when they do their jobs proper ill. >> reporter: attorney general earn into he preit ran for governor in 94 only to lose in the primary and soon to elder guilty plea he in the wake of a five year fbi corruption probe. mike fisher jumped from attorney jen federal 02 to the gop nomination for governor but philadelphia ed rendell won the office. in 2010, tom corbett used his ag post to get the gop nomination and win the governor's office. when kathleen kane got to harrisburg her political future was viewed as bright but the bottom soon fell out. >> bad judgment, inexperience, the inability to understand how to run the office and at the same time deal with the political problems that she had. >> i don't think the scandal

will affect to the credibility of the office. it comes down to who holds the reigns over there. >> reporter: this year's race for attorney general is a vigorous one. republican state senator john rafferty from montgomery county and democratic montgomery county commissioner josh shapiro. >> both candidates have to talk about how they would clean up the proverbial mess in that office. what they would do to reform it. >> reporter: rick, monica, the attorney general's race is of course on the ballot in two weeks, that's november the eighth. live in norristown, i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news. >> it's very concerning that you can get a group of juveniles to pull together that quickly and some become violent. >> right now four teenagers are in police custody after a series of random attacks near temple university. students police officers even a police horse were caught up in the chaos. tonight temple is trying to reassure the community saying safety is its highest priority. >> police are looking at four separate robberies and

assaults all which happened in a matter of hours and blocks apart. "action news" reporter sarah bloomquist spoke with one of the victim's fathers today and she's live in north philadelphia tonight with that story. sarah. >> reporter: rick and monica, what happened here on friday night is still all the talk on temple's campus. big groups of young people roamed the streets just looking to make trouble. moments ago we got a look at some of the surveillance video from the pizza parlor on the corner. the video shows the mob and the melee on oxford about a block off broad in north philadelphia near temple's campus on friday night. police say the group of teens went from street to street randomly targeting temple students beating them up and robbing them. joe all leto's daughter was one of the victims. >> her head was stomped on her whole side of the face was black and blue her arms, her legs her back, her ribs. she was on the ground they were kicking here. >> reporter: two police officers were assaulted and a

police horse punched in the face. >> it was crazy. that were jumping are a and dom people. >> reporter: investigators saw it started on social media with a dual meet up at the pearl theater but so many showed up they couldn't all get in. so instead they split off into groups dead set on starting trouble. >> it doesn't make sense to be destructive or disruptive to traffic that's out there people, pedestrians walking down the street and engage in behavior where you're assaulting someone. >> reporter: the university sent out an alert but some students and parents told us they thought it came too late. >> we got the alert maybe an hour and a half later when it was all cleared up but i don't know, i was happy to get the alert but it wasn't really timely. >> reporter: temple's director of public safety said patrols were increased saturday night and that's something that will continue. >> especially next weekend is halloween. were want to make sure we have plenty of resources out there. >> reporter: now police did take four boys into custody. they range in age from 15 to 17. as for the timing on that so called tu alert, the executive

director, the head of the public safety told us that at first it was not a crime being committed, they were just big groups. but once the violence took out it did take them time to piece it together to get that alert out. they're looking to streamline the system. sarah bloomquist channel6 "action news. >> sarah thank you. at the big board now with the early morning theft that left part of an iconic sight on broad street in pieces. this is what's left of the staircase in front of the union league building in center city philadelphia after it was targeted by a metal thief. officials tell "action news" a man yanked on the brass railing of the staircase so hard it came right off causing the stone structure to crumble. surveillance video apparently shows the suspect with the railing wrapped up and tied to a cart in an alley just a block away from the scene. >> he he did ruin the whole thing. now, that's sad. >> he had to be nuts. had to be something wrong with him. >> well, that staircase is popular for pictures for

weddings and other events. the union league says it is disappointed the staircase is out of commission for now but they also say the damage is repairable and they hope to have it fixed as soon as possible. monica. >> rick, turning to politics now we're less than two hours and counting from the final show down between senator pat toomey and his democratic challenger katie mcginty. going live right now inside the temple performing arts center that is where the senatorial candidates will take the stage this evening to square off. our own jim donovan moderates the debate live for us here on channel6 and coverage begins at 7:00 p.m. in the race for the white house, both hillary clinton and donald trump are using every minute from now until election day trying to gather support from many undecided voters. trump met with farmers in florida today where he railed against the latest poll numbers. according to trump the latest numbers are phone he knee and he -- known knee and -- phony and he insists he's winning. >> the latest abc news poll

puts clinton 12 points a heads of trump nationwide. we'll have more on the race for the presidency coming up at 5:30. >> turning now to accuweather it was a bright and breezy day around the delaware valley as we go outside and look life from sky6 hd a pretty picture from penn's landing. our area has been enjoying temperatures in the 60's but get ready for a cool down. 50's are on the way and even the chance of frost is on the horizon. meteorologist cecily tynan is live outside with the forecast. it's getting an early taste of winter cecily. >> certainly s we have some very cold air on the way. do not feeling that bad despite the fact that a cold front moved through earlier. the cool air is kind of lagging behind. right now philadelphia 63 degrees. normal high for this time of the year is 64 but if you look up to the north and west, that's where our next air mass is coming from. buffalo is 48, pittsburgh it's 54 degrees. so, it is going to get cool for the next several days. now, satellite6 along with action radar showing that front slipped through this morning. we've been seeing some pop-up clouds but now that the sun is

>> in the last hour federal investigators held a briefing about a tour bus tragedy he in palm springs, california. 13 people were killed, 31 others injured when a bus plowed into the back of a tractor-trailer. the bus driver is among the dead. >> there were no skid marks from the bus at the time of the collision. the only skid marks were directly related to the big rig that got pushed forward. i'm not sure specifically about his driver's history but from what i understand he has a valid driver's license to operate the bus. >> the highway patrol and the ntsb say it's too premature to determine what caused the crash. the autopsy on the bus driver still to be done may provide some clues. the bus routinely passed its inspections. >> health check tonight. the american academy of pediatrics says infants should sleep in the same room as parents for at least the first six months. >> new recommendations were announced today to ensure the safe sleep of infants and to prevent sudden infant death syndrome or sids. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman has what parents need to know right now. he she joins us at the big

board. >> there has been a lot of progress over the years, the rate of sids has dropped but sadly thousands of babies still die every year so there are some new updates and reminders for parents. >> they really need to make sure that the baby is safe. >> registered nurse karen angelless ilo helped the hospital receive brown safe hospital a national recognition for their work in educating parents about safe sleep for infants. she says it's best to lead by example. >> parents learn from what they see not necessarily what we talk to them about so we try to demonstrate it so that they actually see the baby on their backs. >> they're also in a firm crib or bassinet that's clutter free, no blankets pillows stuffed animals or bumpers. >> it really should just be a fitted sheet with the baby on their back. >> neonatologist dr. sin thee he ya' demboski says they've already implemented new recommendations including skin to skin contact between mom

and baby as soon as possible after birth for at least an hour. also, babies should sleep in the crib in the parents' room for the first six to 12 months >> wonderful monitors and this and that that you can keep an eye on your baby but nothing is as good as yourself and your instinct. >> keeping up with all recommended vaccines also helps prevent sids and no smoking. >> no smoking anywhere in the house especially the bedroom but even smoking in the car. anywhere around the baby even clothes with smoke on it, all of that can increase the risk for sids and should be avoided. >> and karen told me that the biggest mistake that parents make is thinking it won't happen to them. then they're either sleeping with the baby in the same bed or putting blankets in the crib. we have more information about all the safe sleep recommendations on 6abc.com/health check. rick and monica, back to you. >> ali, thank you. trenton has a new went ton to crack down on lead

poisoning which officials say has become a big concern in the city. a multi-million dollars federal grant will help to he remove lead from some homes helping children. >> we believe with these dollars we'll able to address approximately 150 households and do better case management. >> tests show children in trenton have higher levels of lead in their blood more than kids in flint, michigan in fact where lead in the drinking water is extremely high. officials urge parents to tester their children for lead poisoning. >> cte was a hot topic at philadelphia city hall today. cte means career and technical education. it trains students for food services child care and other careers. the council's education committee heard about why cte programs should be expanded in philadelphia public schools. supporters say cte prepares high school graduates for jobs if college is not possible right after graduation. wilmington's housing authority has a new boston night. the board of commissioners today he introduced eugene

>> time for accuweather at the "action news" big board. >> meteorologist cecily tynan has a check of the forecast. nice afternoon but it's going to get chillier. >> it certainly is. we have the winds of change blowing in right now. we are live on sky6 taking a look, this is from our temple university sky camera, center city skyline william penn seeing a good amount of sunshine out there, kind of mixing in with some clouds and temperatures about where they should be for this time of the year. it's not going to stay that way though. 63 he in philadelphia currently. allentown 60, millville 64, cape may 64. wilmington 63 and reading 62. you notice those stream lines, the arrows out of the northwest. that's the direction of our air flow and that will be pulling down some cool air. right now it's pretty breezy out there, wind gusts anywhere from 16 to 30 miles per hour and even in the overnight hours, we're going to be keeping the wind with us. now satellite6 along with action radar slowing that cold

front moved through this morning and now you can see we've been seeing a lot of the cumulus clouds bubbling up some instability clouds with the cooler air high are in the atmosphere, now they're beginning to break up he though tonight will be mostly clear, bless you, rick, 42 degrees in philadelphia, allentown 37, wilmington 40, cape may 44 and trenton 39 degrees with that chilly breeze and future tracker showing tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock temperatures still in the 40's across much of our viewing area so the temperatures are really going to struggle to rise at all in the afternoon in the mid-50's and then he they really bottom out by wednesday morning. 7:30 wednesday morning future tracker showing the northwest suburbs at or below freezing and near freezing across interior south jersey so because of that, the national weather service has posted freeze watches for the northwest suburbs, interior south jersey from 2 o'clock in the morning until 9 o'clock with temperatures near the freezing point. could be a hard freeze and that means the end of the

from temple university where the two will face off tonight. the contest could help determine which party gets to control the u.s. senate. and our own jim gardner will moderate tonight. you can watch that live at 7:00 p.m. right here on 6abc. >> iraqi troops have fought their way into a pair of villages near the city of mosul tonight. this marks the second week of the campaign to retake the city he from isis. early this morning, special forces began filling isis positions near a town just outside of mosul. they used large guns and rocket propelled again named it's expected to take weeks if not months to drive isis out of iraq's sector largest city. the campaign involves more than 25,000 iraqi troops. united nations children's fund distributed food and other aid items today to displaced iraqi civilians in a village south of mosul. more than 7,000 people have been evacuated by the iraqi army because of the fighting. thorough they received food

water blankets and clothes. unicef doctors were there vaccinating children against polio and measles. world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the battle for mosul as well as the presidential election. you can watch that at 6:30 following "action news" at 6:00. >> from our delaware news room now dover police are trying to figure out who shot a man and then dropped him off at the hospital. shots rang outer late last night about 10:30 in an alley in the 500 block of river road. several minutes later the 31-year-old victim was dropped off at the main entrance of kent general hospital with two gun shot wounds. he was later pronounced dead. philadelphia police are searching for the suspect who robbed a store at gunpoint here in the cedarbrook section. it happened early sun morning at a 7-eleven in the 7700 block of ogontz avenue. police say this suspect walked in, pulled out a handgun and and pointed it at the employee right there. the clerk gave the suspect money from the cash register. fortunately no one was hurt. if you have any information, you're asked to call police. and overturned truck

caused backups early this morning in gloucester county. chopper6 over the scene about 5:00 a.m. on the northbound lanes of route 55 near route 641 in glassboro. police say the driver lost control and slid off the road before rolling over. there were no reports of serious injuries. drivers experienced delays, though, as crews worked to tow that truck away. >> a civil trial related to the penn state sexual abuse scandal continues today. former penn state president rodneyer he rick son took the stand. erickson said he made the decision back in 2011 to take former assistant football coach mike mcqueary off of the coaching staff for safety reasons. he said the university was receiving threats and hateful e-mails. mcqueary claims the school retaliated against him for helping prosecutors in the jerry sandusky abuse case. he's suing penn state for $4 million in damages. police in state college say fans celebrating saturday night caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to

public property. the fans pulled down five street lights and damaged street like globes. fans took down about 20 street and stop signs officials say it will cost about $18,000 to fix everything. they also say it's not clear how much damage was done to private property. at least one car was damaged and some furniture was apparently set on fire. >> classes are back in session today for more than 100,000 students now that the faculty strike at 14 pennsylvania universities is over. the strike lasted three days. friday afternoon, though, more than 5,000 faculty and coaches reached a tentative agreement with the state system of higher education. the new deal still has to get full union membership for ratification. >> dozens of job seekers turned out today for a job fair in south jersey. the action cam was at the seconds annual utility job and career fair at mercer county community college in west windsor township. representatives from energy gas water and other utility companies were there taking resumes and answering questions. nonutility organizations were

>> five people died in a a wrong way crash on a massachusetts high warm. officials say a car southbound on a northbound road slammed head on into a car early this morning. the driver of the wrong way vehicle died along with four people in the other car. investigators are now working to determine why that driver was traveling in the dropping correction. authorities say a fire at a mobile home in northwest georgia killed six people including four children. flames broke out about 10:30 last night causing heavy smoke and sparking electrical lines. the fire was so intense firefighters had to fight the flames from a distance. officials say a propane tank on the back of the house exploded and fueled the blaze. fire investigators say the

cause was an improperly installed wood stove. they've ruled it accidental. >> concern is growing over the safety of a 58 story building in california that's tilting to one side. it's being called the leaning tower of san francisco. the millennium tower is leaning 6-inches to the side but also sinking into the soul below. to make matters worse it's sitting right in the middle of an earthquake fault zone. the building has more than 400 luxury apartments with $10 million penthouses. residents are now wondering if they should leave but developers insist the building is safe. >> the building is safe. it's seismically sound. it's structural integrity has not been compromised. >> i think a lot of people are losing sleep over it. i certainly. one of them. >> the developer blames construction of a nearby transit terminal and the removal of ground water. the city he is now asking the developer for solutions to stabilize the building. >> ducis is here with sports. eagles are happy of course since they beat sam bradford and company but it came at a price. >> he they suffered an injury. listen to this they're

when that sentence was handed down. he joins us live from the montgomery county courthouse. john. >> reporter: hi, monica. well, kane was convict the last summer. since then the defense had asked for house arrest. today one kane ally a former police chief had told the judge that in his opinion, any jail sentence would be a death sentence. his thinking was the drug gangs that the attorney general's office prosecuted during kane's tenure would seek retribution. the judge listened but agreed with the prosecutor's office that jail time was necessary. anything less would depreciate the seriousness of what she called an extraordinary abuse of the system. the former attorney general kathleen kane leaving the court in handcuffs. prosecutors say a powerful message sent to those who would abuse their power. >> what's clear from this is that nobody is above the law. this is a significant jail time for the chief law enforcement officer of the state. >> reporter: the judge in
