the driver gets away with a major haul in high-end clothing. this is just the latest serious crime in center city, philadelphia, and residents are taking notice. so are police. they staged a roundup today hauling in drug suspects. it is tuesday night and the big story on action news tonight is crime in center city, philadelphia. action news reporter dann cuellar is live on south broad street. dan, some residents and businesses say it is bad and getting worse. >> reporter: that's right, jim. people are deply troubled and concerned with some of the stuff going on. they want to know what's causing it and how do you fix it before it gets worse. that's what we were looking into tonight. as promised philadelphia police stepping up their efforts to combat crime in center city. here, undercover narcotics officers swooped down on drug dealing that's a big problem on 15th between chestnut and spruce, police believe is leading to other crimes as

had been shot. the victim was flown to the hospital for treatment. police have no one in custody. meanwhile we are learning more about the moment when is police fatally shot two wanted fugitives from delaware. it happened at 10:00 this morning at this motel in elkton, maryland, just over the state line. police were serving a warrant. authorities say 25-year-old brandon jones and his girlfriend, chelsea porter, were armed with realistic-looking bb guns like this. not real firearms. when they refused repeated police commands to drop their weapons. four officers opened fire. we could see our coldest overnight temperatures of the fall so far tonight. accuweather is talking about freeze warnings and frost advisories. let's get the latest information now from meteorologist cecily tynan. >> and, jim, definitely already quite a chill in the air right now. some areas dropping down into the 30s. philadelphia holding at 46, but

millvale, 34, allentown, 38, reading, 36. and the poconos down to 33 degrees. and satellite 6 along with action radar showing we have crystal clear skies. so without any cloud cover to insulate the earth with very low dew points temperatures will be dropping very quickly overnight. so you may want to find that winter coat for tomorrow morning. clear and cold with light winds. philadelphia down to 37 degrees. but allentown dropping down to 28. reading forecast low 30. lancaster, 32. millvale, 31. trenton and wilmington, 34 degrees. so with temperatures that low we have freeze warnings in effect for the outlying suburbs. frost advisories for everywhere else. good idea to protect your plants. may want to consider draining and turning off your outside faucets under the freeze wacker. i'll talk about when temperatures rebound. rain on the way and big changes for the weekend in the accuweather forecast. jim. >> thank you.

philadelphia mayor jim kenny is urging septa and the largest transit union to avoid a strike. legal 23 of the transit union workers threatening to walk off the job bit end of the month. action news was there as top negotiators returned to talks at the sheraton downtown hotel. they're arguing with the transit agency over wages, pensions, health care, and rotating work shifts. the union boss says he is not confident there will be a resolution by the halloween deadline. septa didn't comment today. >> what do we want? when do we want it? >> now. >> coatesville area teachers protested tonight, demanding a new contract. they have been working without one since the end of august. but the union says there has been very little progress to reach a settlement with the district. so the educators marched into tonight's school board meeting to make their voices heard. they argue they're the lowest paid teachers in chester county

after accepting two pay freezes over the past five years. obamacare has moved to the top of the agenda tonight on the campaign trail with exactly two weeks to go until election day. the issue regained momentum after the government revealed today that premiums will be rising by double digits. a typical mid-tier plan will cost 25% more on average next year. meanwhile about one in five consumers will be left with only a single option for their insurance company after many insurers scaled back their involvement. but the obama administration is trying to soothe concerns. saying that the vast majority of americans aren't effected by this since they are insured through their work place or are on medicare or medicaid. for the 11 million in the marketplace, 85% of those folks actually have the tax credits, or the subsidies, that help them.

and those subsidies are designed to move as premiums move. so for those folks they will be insulated from those changes. but donald trump lashed out at medicare and the premium hike. he's conducting a campaign blitz through florida. today referring to obama -- obamacare, he said, quote, it is killing our businesses. it is killing our small businesses. it is killing individuals. said trump, quote, my first day in office i'm going to ask congress to put a bill on my desk getting rid of this disastrous law. hillary clinton also in florida. and circumstances forced her to deal with the obamacare hike in premiums. she said that she has a plan to lower insurance costs through the public option. and a medicare buy-in. she claimed that trump's obamacare replacement plan would strip insurance from about 20 million americans. in other campaign news today hillary clinton also received

the endorsement of a predecessor, former secretary of state, republican colin powell. the latest on bridgegate. bridget kelly back on the stand. this time under cross-examination. the prosecutor tried to poke holes in her system that she had told christie about a, quote, traffic study, that caused the massive traffic jams leading to the george washington bridge. dozens gathered in center city philadelphia for a hearing on racism in the lgbt community. members of the community shared their stories of discrimination in the city. mayor jim kenny was on hand for the hearing tonight. the commission says it will take the information it gathered tonight to make recommendations for positive change. a large check was presented tonight in wilmington for the families of fallen fire fighters. the ceremony took place at the

st. francis health care's 47th annual colleague appreciation dinner. the $85,000 check is the culmination of a fundraising effort by st. francis hospital and the community. the money will go to the families of the captain and lieutenant killed in a house fire last month. dozens of organizations that help children and families of fallen police and fire fighters themselves got a helping hand tonight. the irish pub in northeast philadelphia handed out $557500. that's how much the pub made during the 29th tour deshore. a 65-mile bike ride from philadelphia to atlantic city. a total of 35,000 make that 35 organizations, forgive me. 35 organizations received checks tonight. the newest thing in video game entertainment is virtual reality. but now the franklin institute

i've seen what can happen as the result of hate. my son matt was murdered in laramie, wyoming, in 1998. he was befriended by two men in a bar who pretended to be gay. they offered him a ride home, and when he was in their car, they robbed him and beat him. they drove matt out to the prairie and tied him to a split-rail fence, then beat him some more and left him for dead. in the aftermath of matt's death, my family saw the best of america in the love and support we were shown. so when i see the hate that donald trump has brought to his campaign for president, it terrifies me. i'd like to punch him in the face, i'll tell ya. ahh, i don't know what i said, uhh, i don't remember. he's a mexican. i could stand in the middle of fifth avenue and shoot somebody, and i wouldn't... words have an influence. violence causes pain. hate can rip us apart. i know what can happen as the result of hate, and donald trump should never be our president.
