mike pence's campaign plane slid off runway 13 and ended up in the mud. nobody is saying it was a close call but it sure wasn't your typical landing. thursday night, the big story is breaking news from new york. pence's plane tried to land in stormy and slippery conditions at laguardia. people on the plane said the aircraft spun into a skid as soon as it hit the ground. no one was hurt. that includes mike pence, his wife and his daughter. also on the plane, pence's staff, the secret service and members of the media. first responders raced to the plane not knowing the situation on board. the republican vice presidential nominee was seen speaking with staffers in the pouring rain shortly afterwards. the plane went through several areas.

laguardia shut down all operations for nearly an hour. meanwhile, governor pence is scheduled to campaign in bucks county tomorrow afternoon. tonight, philadelphia police say the smash and grab at the macy's today at the roosevelt mall was done by the same bandits that hit boyd's tuesday morning. authorities say this is a major ring that is responsible for a large number of jobs in the area. "action news" reporter, dann cuellar is live at the macy's, dann, what are police saying there? >> reporter: one source is telling me these guys are good, remarkably good. the license plate tag is not registered to anyone. the question is, how and where did they get it. this is video obtained by "action news" of a smashed display case that contained high end watches. they used a hammer to smash the case as clerks and customers

watched. >> when i heard about it, forget about shopping. i got scared. >> i was shaking and stuff. >> reporter: police say the men got away with 14 watches with a value of $16,000. >> when they were in the parking lot, they dropped and empty bag. all three males entered a mercedes, a mercedes-benz. >> reporter: they got away in the mercedes s350. at boyed, they used a toyota suv to smash the window before seven of them rushed in. they made off with $45,000 in mens suits. the pennsylvania license tag in the boyd case was hva-3721. the tag today was off by one number, hva-3741. >> we believe it's just a mistake. one of the witnesses got the number wrong.

>> reporter: the tag involved is sought by police outside the city for a number of felonies. mysteriously, it is not registered to anyone. even so -- >> we are confident these individuals are committing more than one crime here in the city and may be related to other crimes just outside the city. >> reporter: now, a press released earlier listed the car as being stolen. tonight, police say that is not the case. police have secured surveillance video and checking the bag that was dropped by one of the men for fingerprints and dna. dann cuellar, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you, dann. a new york city apartment building wept up in flames. another story is emerging from the blaze. a firefighter rescued a tenant snatching him from the third floor window. christie ileto is live at the

willow grove fire company. christie, tell us the story of jim lee. >> somebody called and said there was a man hanging out the window. >> reporter: the daring rope rescue caught on cell phone shows new york city firefighter jim lee repelling off the building clinching a badly burned resident in his 80s. >> i told him to stay calm. when we got down, i said, i hope you enjoyed the ride. >> what did you think when you saw him scaling the wall. >> hope it don't break. >> reporter: he tells "action news" before his son, jimmy, became part of the rescue he got his start here at 16 as a junior

firefighter. after 15 years, he worked his way to assistant chief. >> take this truck together. i got the front and he got the back. >> reporter: did you heech him that? >> i was probably involved. he was the one that just caught it naturally, i guess. >> reporter: a natural, of sorts. jimmy admits the dramatic rescue was no easy task. >> we train all the time for that. from the day you go to school up to your last day on the job, you train for this, probably one of the most dangerous evolutions we do. >> reporter: thursday night members of the fire company watched as one of their own got recognition on abc world news knowing jimmy's dream of helping others started here. now, as former colleagues here who didn't want to go on camera said in this line of work, this is just another day on the job.

philadelphia. eight people killed and 200 injured when the speeding train derailed at the frankford curve. the victims familiar vis and survivors will have their awards in hand by june instead of waiting for years of litigation. 911 calls in montgomery county may not go through tonight if made on a lan line phone. a contractor cut a communication line and it's impacting emergency calls. it's been several hours. they don't have a time line of when it will be restored. they are urged to use cell phone or text if they need to call 911. 11 days left until the election and donald trump is racing against the calendar trying to come from behind, if the polls are to be believed. trump was in toledo, ohio denouncing hillary and bill clinton.

he called them creatures of a political system. hillary clinton made her first joint appearance today with first lady, michelle obama. the crowd went wild in winston salem, north carolina. she said yes, hillary clinton is my friend and the most prepared candidate ever to run for president. clinton asked the crowd, is there anyone more inspiring than michelle obama? the crowd responded with cheers. meanwhile, wikileaks released a potentially damaging memo from 2011. it was written by doug band who was in charge of fund raising for the clinton foundation. as it turns out, he was involved in securing more than $50 million in personal fees for bill clinton. this happened while hillary clinton was secretary of state and opponents will say this proves there was a connection between the foundation and the clinton's personal income.

pennsylvania lawmakers want to shield police officers involved in deadly shootings from being identified right away. governor tom wolf isn't saying whether he will sign a bill. it will pass a house and senate. the legislation requires the officers name be released only if they are charged with a crime. philadelphia, durantly, has a policy to identify officers within 72 hours. governor wolf said he will sign a law to loosen up restrictions to beer sales in the state. it will allow them to sell six packs as well as single bottles. right now, they are only allowed to selby the case, by keg or 12 pack. that will provide more -- i will tell you this, still to come on "action news," a popular social media app is shutting down. plus, a tense stand off at an environmental standpoint.

as protesters sung native american songs, police officers moved in and arrested more than 100 people who have been blocking the path of an oil pipeline in north dakota. protesters set a fire along the road to keep officers at bay. proponents say it would disturb native american sites. the candidates are battling it out in their last minute bid for voters. if you have been paying attention, you know how important the state of pennsylvania is. the election could be won or lost right here. now, we are investigating concerns about the potential for fraud at the polls. wendy saltzman joins us with the results of this exclusive
