>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> it is day two of the septa strike. if it is anything like day one you expect commuter chaos. >> you can probably expect more of this crowded station where is regional rail lines are running and more gridlock on the roads in center city. union leaders have already rejected one post strike proposal from septa. >> good morning, it's 4 o'clock on this wednesday october 2nd. actually it's november 2nd, isn't it. >> yes. >> "action news is on half hour earl to bring you the very latest on the septa strike. >> we have live team coverage. karen rogers will give us all the details on what septa services are down, what your alternatives will be as well.

>> and "action news" reporters annie mccormick and gray hall will bring us live reports on contract talks and what commuters can expect today but let's start with meteorologist, david murphy. >> all right, guys, well, we're starting out in a little better shape this morning than we were in yesterday for day one of the septa strike. there are a few clouds out there but they're melting away and i think we'll have a fairly bright start this morning and temperatures are not as cool as yesterday. 52 in philadelphia right now, 46 degrees in allentown. we actually got down to about 40 in most of the suburbs were in the 30's yesterday but you can see how much better we are today. 49 wilmington, 50 trenton, 56 in cape may and like yesterday the winds are still pretty but light and manageable. it is going to get nicer this afternoon. 49 degrees by 7 o'clock. 55 by 10 o'clock. 63 by noon. at times there might be a few high clouds filtering through. then your high this afternoon is 73 degrees so it is going to be warm for the kids coming home from school. by 6 o'clock we're back down to 66. maybe cool enough for a light jacket but a much better commute home and to work today than what we had yesterday.

gets even warmer tomorrow karen but then we're on the lookout for afternoon showers and thunderstorms. details on that coming up. >> all right day. so it's another nightmare of a commute as we try to deal with the septa strike. we have the buses trolleys, subways not running again this morning. that created huge problems yesterday. you want to expect delays on all the regional rails. yesterday we saw delays up to an hour on some lines. we also saw overcrowding. so some trains just bypassing stations altogether. and then last night we had other issues compounding all of this. there were cancellations because of picketers blocking some he restricted areas and not allowing people to get to work so we'll have to just see how this evolves today and see how this is going to impact you. expect major delays with the regional rails. we also saw problems on the roads as more people driving on the roads and those jams started even earlier. looking live on the schuylkill, another problem here, construction blocks it entirely. westbound schuylkill blocked at university avenue. you can see everybody being

forced off by this overnight construction expected to last another hour. can't take the schuylkill westbound past university so use i-95 northbound and the vine westbound seven. another big issue, i-78 eastbound blocked at 737. stick old route 22 instead because of this accident blocking all lanes and a cleanup from a tractor-trailer fire here on the turnpike northbound and that's right near the james fenimore cooper service area. watch for those few problems on the roads. the major problem mass transit day two of the septa strike matt and tam. >> annie mccormick is live at the sheraton in center city the site of contract negotiations. annie, the union did not like the latest offer. >> reporter: no, matt , in fact they rejected the latest proposal that we were told they received late tuesday. it was around 1:00 a.m. that both sides did conclude their talks for the night. they will resume later on in the morning. septa released a statement saying they they do believe they made steady progress. here's a look at some of the

picketers we're seeing across the city. more than 4700 transit worker union employees walked off the job at midnight yesterday. local 234 would not go into details about that proposed contract they received lilt tuesday only saying it bear had anything new and was quickly rejected. however all along guaranteed full pension plans we've been told have been the deal breakers for the union. members picketed across the city at septa headquarters other unions joined them there. at one point picketers disrupted regional rail at the height of rush hour. according to septa the median salaries for employees is 68,000o yesterday it was reported that both sides were very far apart as far as money goes for pensions. bob brady. >> try to find money whether it be the city the state or the feds and if we can do that we'll do that, you know. what we have to do to make sure this thing gets over. >> it's just anxiety.

you know, you wonder, you know, are they talking, are they making any progress, how long we going to be out here, you know, but we out here for the duration so however long it takes. >> reporter: and hearing from some of those picketers that are out there, some of those union works congressman bob brady getting involved with those talks, he did say at one point last night that it felt like they were close to a deal. however, that deal has in the been made yet. now, in regards to those picketers blocking the regional rail, septa did get an injunction to make sure that regional rail would move smoothly. last night and also this morning. now, septa also said that if this strike does continue and it looks like it's going to go into election day, they will again go to a judge in that case a federal judge to get an injunction to get those employees back to work for election day. for now reporting live in center city, annie mccormick channel6 "action news." back to you. >> annie, thank you. now let's turn to "action news" reporter gray hall live at septa's olney station. gray it was quiet there this

tomb yesterday morning but later in the day it became chaotic and that could be the case again today, right? >> reporter: you're absolutely right, tam. you can say right now quiet before the storm but just a nightmare for those travelers. no one that uses septa wanted the strike to happen but here we are day two of this strike and until deal. the big of the impact to this thousands and thousands of rider whose depend on septa every day to get around. let's take you to some video we shot for you just yesterday. of course with this strike many people now depending on regional rails as a backup mode of transportation. one commuter actually sent "action news" these pictures tuesday showing the inside of suburban station and you can see he those long lines stretching throughout that terminal. just not a fun experience for those passengers with so many using the regional rails as a backup of course this is causing backlog and those crowded trains. the strike means those buses trolls and subways they have stopped which is impacting hundreds of thousands of those riders. the regional rail system now that continues to operate

despite the strike because those workers belongs to a different union but trying to get around has just been brutal passengers hoping for a quick resolution that will end this strike and get things back to normal. >> hectic. super hectic. i actually got up this morning early got my dad to dialysis but i was trying to get my coworkers into work but i know a few of them work near me. it was so chaotic you can't get anywhere in the car period. whether the train runs or not you can't get anywhere in a car. we were struck at 16th and spruce this morning for nearly an hour. you can't get nowhere. >> reporter: association back out live, you can hear the frustration of those passengers. now, word of advice. allow extra time for your morning and evening commutes because no doubt those trains will be overcrowded until this strike is hammered out. travel headaches will continue. last time septa went on strike happened back in 2009. that lasted six days. we're hoping that does not

and more women came forward accusing cosby of molesting them. >> let's turn to accuweather. a little warmer to start than yesterday, right. >> yeah, a lot warmer to finish too. storm tracker6 live double scan shows us that we're dry for your morning commute. pretty important for those of you who are hoofing it. tranquil conditions out there winds fairly light but temperatures are better as mat intimated. 52 degrees at the current temperature in philadelphia. a lot better than yesterday when we were headed down to the upper 30's and mid 30's across most of the region and winds currently are calm. pretty comfortable as you step outside. also seeing the clouds from overnight evaporate over most neighborhoods. expecting a fair amount of sunshine early. looks like over by the coast there's a little bit more cloud cover right now and as we go through the day you'll get a little bit of additional cloud cover filtering in. by 8 o'clock 49 degrees. probably a little on the cool side but better than yesterday and then 10:00 55. noon 63.

how about a high of 73 at around 3 o'clock. now, this is november. the sun angle is very low and we'll hit that 73 for about three minutes and then it will just go back down again and by 5 o'clock we're back to 66 degrees probably the mid 60's by the time the dinner hour rolls around. all things considered a pretty nice break for us today. 72 is the high in allentown, 73 reading, 73 trenton wilmington and philadelphia. 70 millville and if you're right down along the coast probably somewhere in the upper 60's today. tomorrow we'll start out with sun. it will be even warmer way cold front coming in. but by noon we'll be on the lookout for clouds getting thicker to the north and west and then we'll wind up in the later afternoon hours and evening hours with lines of showers coming through and perhaps a couple of gust he tea thunderstorms. that's something to keep in mind during the afternoon and evening commute tomorrow. looks like all of that is off the coast by about 7:30 or 8 o'clock. your seven-day forecast today's high is 73. nice and warm out there and then tomorrow very warm with a high of 79 degrees. but sun giving way to clouds and again those afternoon

showers and storms are possible. then friday behind that departing front it's back to reality. blustery and chilly a high of just 59 degrees and for the weekend breezy and cool on saturday, a high of 62, partly sunny. the unity cup in pretty good shape, though at citizens bank park. remember to set those clocks back one hour then on saturday night and then sunday is sun he knee and breezy, 59. as we look ahead towards election day right now it looks sunny and nice with a high of school it's about as good as it gets. >> let's hope septa is not still on strike. dramatic video showing a crash caused by a driver who ran a stop sign and then slammed into a bus. >> the septa strike has left a number of students without a ride to class. one some schools have come up with their own transportation for stranded students. karen. >> looking live right now at i-95 at penn's landing. overnight construction is clear. no problems on i-95. we'll talk about the septa strike and help you good tote work when "action news" comes

>> maybe that's the biggest surprise karen is people that don't take septa were feeling the impact just as well. >> absolutely. and not even just in center city. we had people talking on social media telling us even in new jersey the highways seemed extra clogged as people were trying to come over the ben franklin bridge into the vine street expressway, maybe people who would normally take patco even though patco is still running afraid to do that because they can't get their normal connections. i-95 was a mess people driving on i-95 a lot earlier so really affecting everybody with this septa strike. of course no buses, no trolleys, no subways. we do have the 101, one oh he two trolly and norristown high speedline running. you can take them. here's the 101, 102 but when you get there you've got nowhere to go. that's what a lot of people were saying there's no way to get east-west across the city. you can take some regional rails and you might need to think about that a little bit differently. the trenton line if you're in the northeast you can take the regional rails. you can't take obviously the broad street subway but you can get to the north broad

station and take regional rails there into the city. the trouble is taking regional rails isn't an easy option. we just saw huge delays and overcrowding, up to an hour delay so you're standing on a platform waiting for an hour for a train to come by and in some cases then it would be overcrowded and bypass you. they did add extra service to regional rails butter we'll expect those huge delays and we'll be following it as it evolves. quiet on the roads except for this. schuylkill westbound blocked. no traffic getting by on the schuylkill westbound at university avenue. that's because of this construction. it's going to be out there for about another 45 minutes. everyone being forced off at university. so you can take i-95 and the vine but not the schuylkill westbound at university. also this accident here blocking i-78 eastbound at 737. a quick look at the weather. it's 52 degrees, much milder than it was yesterday morning. at least we've got that matt and tam. >> indeed. thanks karen. the septa strike is having a significant impact on college students in philadelphia. temple university says many of their commuting students use septa's regional rail lines

which have been busier because of the absence of other services. the school hired shuttle buses to transport students to and from various sections of the city. many of those were packed. >> two hours. >> two hours. >> two hours. >> for a shuttle bus. >> yes. five went down and then one that came, it was packed to the gills. no one could get on it. it went right past us. >> community college in spring garden a commuter college of 35,000 students had many empty chairs in classrooms. some professors say they are putting lectures online to accommodate students during the strike.
