been keepingen eye on this. thousands pouring on to the 101 blocking traffic in both directions for several hours. police have arrested more than a dozen demonstrators there. >> large crowds also rallied against his election in new york, chicago, dallas and seattle with police making arrests in nearly every city. we went to one of those protests here in manhattan. overnight protesters hit the streets from coast to coast. seattle, chicago, new york. thousands of people marched in at least ten cities speaking out against president-elect trump. >> i'm here to show solidarity to people who have been affected by the hatred that donald trump's rhetoric has invigorated in this country. >> reporter: here in manhattan crowds chanted things like dump trump and new york hates trump as they blocked the entrance of trump tower where the president-elect was set to be home at the time. >> i'm a republican. i'm a woman. i have never come out to a protest and i've never felt so

passionately about anything being wrong. as a hispanic woman i don't feel safe in this country. >> reporter: in california they gathered on the 101 shutting down the freeway and in oakland people set multiple fires on streets forcing police in riot gear to move in. >> i don't want a president that represents everything negative about this world. i would rather have a president that's positive and peaceful. >> reporter: in washington, d.c. they marched outside the newly opened trump hotel. >> i come from a family of political refugees from cuba and i'm very grateful to this country for having accepted us. and i'm terrified. >> the raw emotions there, more than 24 hours after those election results and president obama today is welcoming president-elect trump to the white house in hopes of ensuring a successful transition after

his victory. >> and it might be a little bit awkward. trump has questioned the president's birthplace and viewed to repeal obamacare and the president has repeatedly called trump unfit to take his job but even with all of that and with his legacy on the line, obama now says that he is rooting for trump to unite the country. abc's elizabeth hur has the latest from washington. >> reporter: this morning, donald trump is making his first trip to washington as the new president-elect promising to be a president for all americans. >> to all republicans and democrats and independents across this nation, i say it is time for us to come together as one united people. >> reporter: trump will be the nation's 45th president after beating hillary clinton who hoped to make history and now urging her followers to support her former opponent. >> this is painful and it will be for a long time. but i want you to remember this,

vladimir putin says he's looking forward to easing tensions with the u.s. the president-elect took criticism for praising putin on the campaign trail. the russian leader wants to restore fully fledged relations after being at odds over russia's role in the syrian conflict. and mexican president says he and the president-elect have agreed to meet. trump propsed to build a wall along the mexican border and make mexico pay for it. well, enrique pena nieto says, the pair will discuss a relationship between the two nations. they spoke in august when trump made a quick visit to mexico city. and then there is german chancellor angela merkel who issued a reminder as she congratulated trump in a statement she said germany and america are connected by a number of values including democracy, freedom and the dignity of man. she promised cooperation on the basis of those values. a quirk of scheduling as we mentioned. president obama is set to meet today with president-elect trump. >> so a few hours later

well, breaking overnight the search is on in seattle for a gunman who opened fire on a crowd outside a 7-eleven. two people were critically injured in the incident which police believe was a result of an argument. they say it had nothing to do with the anti-trump protests nearby. and it's the beginning of the end for isis in one of iraq's largest cities. that is at least according to one diplomat who describing the battle to liberate mosul in that way. the u.n. envoy for iraq says steady progress is being made in liberating the state from the caliphate. however, reports say isis is forcing thousands of civilians to stay in mosul to be used as human shields. two marine fighter jet pilots managed to survive a midair collision off the coast of san diego. one pilot was able to land at a
